FOODS DISSOLVING BLOOD CLOTS

Pineapple contains the enzyme, Bromelain, which acts to eliminate Fibrin, the protein that causes blood clots.

Natto, a Japanese dish made from fermented soybeans, contains the enzyme Nattokinase, which not only dissolves blood clots, but also prevents new ones from forming.

Walking in the woods can keep heart disease at bay

Nature's own stress buster! A simple walk in the woods can boost heart health by lowering stress and blood pressure levels. Nature has beneficial effects that help us cope with stress at work, according to new research. The study highlights the power of the 'great outdoors' to improve both physiological and psychological well being. "The value of nature has long been considered to be advantageous to human health. Early examples of this come in the form of urban parks established by wealthy philanthropists during the 19th century, and in the gardens incorporated into hospital designs," she said. "Our research supports this, demonstrating an association between improved health outcomes and engagement with surrounding 'green space'," she said.

A series of five studies were set up by the researchers to explore the physiological and psychological benefits of nature, and the response to stress during and after viewing nature in simulated and real environments. Individual perceptions of green space surrounding home and work environments were examined, as well as how individuals interact with green space and its impact on their health. One specific study measured how a group of people recovered from a stressful task after they had viewed slides showing scenes of nature. Results showed that recovery from the stressful task was improved compared to when the scenes were of unpleasant built-up environments, according to a statement.

In a separate study, a walk in "green" environments at lunch time enhanced restorative sleep the following night. Furthermore, if individuals walked regularly in a "green" environment, they showed significantly lower levels of blood pressure and perceived stress after just eight weeks. "It's widely accepted that nature is good for us, but we're still trying to delve into what it does for us and why," she concluded . "However, our research has shown that 'green' environments can be an effective stress buster. If we can encourage more people to enjoy the great outdoors it may help increase their levels of physical activity and, therefore, could also be a powerful tool to help fight the growing incidence of cardiovascular disease," she said.

Anxiety makes the world smell worse !

Anxiety stinks! Stress may not only make you smell bad, but also the world around you, a new study suggests.

The study shows that when people are anxious, smells they once found neutral become distasteful.

Scientists using powerful new brain imaging technologies have revealed how anxiety or stress can rewire the brain, linking centres of emotion and olfactory processing, to make typically benign smells malodorous.

Researchers said that, the brains of human subjects experience anxiety induced by
disturbing pictures and text of things like car crashes and war transform neutral odours to distasteful ones, fuelling a feedback loop that could heighten distress and lead to clinical issues like anxiety and depression.

The finding is important because it may help scientists understand the dynamic nature of smell perception and the biology of anxiety as the brain rewires itself under stressful circumstances and reinforces negative sensations and feelings.

"After anxiety induction, neutral smells become clearly negative," said a researcher.

"People experiencing an increase in anxiety show a decrease in the perceived pleasantness of odours. It becomes more negative as anxiety increases," she said.

Using behavioural techniques and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI),the group looked at the brains of a dozen human subjects with induced anxiety as they processed known neutral odours.

Functional MRI is a technology that enables clinicians and researchers to observe the working brain in action.

In the course of the experiment, researchers observed that two distinct and typically independent circuits of the brain- one dedicated to olfactory processing, the other to emotion- become intimately intertwined under conditions of anxiety.

Subsequent to anxiety induction and the imaging process, subjects were asked again to rate the panel of neutral smells, most assigning negative responses to smells they previously rated as neutral.

"In typical odour processing, it is usually just the olfactory system that gets activated. But when a person becomes anxious, the emotional system becomes part of the olfactory processing stream," she said.

Although those two systems of the brain are right next to each other, under normal circumstances there is limited crosstalk between the two.

However, under conditions of induced anxiety, the Wisconsin team observed the emergence of a unified network cutting across the two systems.

Tips to avoid gastric problems

Having small but frequent meal, drinking plenty of water, eating fibre-rich food and eating slowly and chewing are some of the easiest habits one could make to avoid gastric problems.

Not overeating, not lying down for about three hours after taking food, not wearing tight-fitting clothes or belts around the waist, not exercising for at least an hour after eating, avoiding fast and deep-fried food on the ‘don’ts’ side will also help keep gastrointestinal (GI) problems away.

Symptoms of gastric problems such as heartburn, difficulty in swallowing, bitter or sour taste, cough or hoarseness of voice are caused by stomach acid rising up to oesophagus, according to consultant Gastroenterologist. It may also be caused by improper functioning of the muscle that separates contents of stomach from food pipe owing to obesity, lack of exercise or old age or excess stomach acid caused by heavy drinking, smoking or overeating, he elaborates. The advanced endoscopy technology of the Gastroenterology department of the hospital will help diagnose GI problems and provides therapeutic endoscopy/colonoscopy, says Dr.

Regular exercise key to healthy heart

According to the recent survey, the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) has increased to 40 per cent among men, women and young adults. And it has gone up by 10-15 per cent among women below 40 years of age.
World Heart Day is being celebrated on Sunday with the World Heart Federation theme: A life-course approach to the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with a focus on women and children. Sedentary lifestyle, obesity, use of tobacco, stress, unhealthy diet patterns and lack of exercise are major factors causing the disease. Right attitude towards life and setting achievable targets play a role in maintaining healthy heart.
The risk of CHD is relatively low among women till menopause due to the presence of protective hormones like estrogen and progesterone, Head of cardiology said. “Appropriate understanding of society and the life that revolves around you go a long way in leading stress-free life. There is a thin line between being ambitious and over ambitious. If we are able to balance between these two aspects and set achievable targets, our stress can be managed better,” he added.
Workout and diet
Senior consultant interventional cardiologist  said: “The secret to stay healthier, happier and younger is to work out regularly. Understanding its importance starts from home. Regular exercise followed by healthy diet help women and the community maintain a healthy heart. Parents should educate their children on the aspect and lead by example.”
Cardiologist  said obesity and smoking among children lead to CVD at an early stage. “I have treated patients suffering from heart ailments at the age of 18-20 years. Sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy food habits and tobacco consumption are some of the top reasons for premature coronary heart disease,” he said and suggested isotonic exercises for children to fight obesity.

Now, an alternative for heart transplant

On 24 August this year, 42 year-old cardiac patient got a new lease of life when the Heartware Ventricular Assist Device (HVAD) was transplanted in his heart at a Hospital in Chennai. It was the first such surgery in the country.

HVAD is a tiny device that pumps blood in a heart that has been irreparably damaged. It is a new ray of hope for people who suffer from cardiac ailments that cannot be treated through angioplasty or a coronary bypass surgery.

The patient was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy (weakened heart muscle that leads to heart failure) in May 2011, and was under medical care and strict lifestyle modifications since then. But things changed in July this year, when he suddenly felt chest pain and passed out in his car when he was returning after dinner. An employee of the Hospital was passing by. He pulled him out of the car, and performed  cardiopulmonary  resuscitation (CPR). However, when that didn’t work he was rushed to the hospital, where he was revived with electric shocks.

“His Left Ventricular had failed. For such cases we have only two options, heart transplant which is not possible immediately, or put the HVAD pump, the latest technology across the world,” Dr. said. “The arrival of HVAD in India will be a major medical milestone for those who cannot avail a transplant,” he said.

He added, “Within a few weeks of operation, the patient can ambulate, take a shower, go out for a walk, travel short distances and also climb stairs. The unique advantage of this device is that it’s the smallest available in the world and fits fully within the small space around the heart. There is no need to open up other body cavities to fit it inside. This is a beautiful advantage because it reduces overall invasiveness. The only issue is the cost, around Rs. 80 lakhs.”

Meanwhile, he feels rejuvenated. “It’s a second life for me. I used to feel weak and drowsy at work, and while spending time with my wife and children. Now, just few weeks after my surgery, I already feel 10 years younger. After several years I can read a magazine completely without falling asleep midway,” he said.

Yoga During Menopause Doesn't Help Hot Flashes But Reduces Insomnia

Researchers of a new study found that yoga may help women with insomnia during menopause but does nothing to lessen hot flashes.
It is not uncommon for middle aged women to suffer from hot flashes and insomnia during menopause. Often, experts recommend yoga to deal with hot flashes. However, researchers of a new study found that while yoga can help women with insomnia during menopause, it doesn't help reduce hot flashes nor make them less bothersome.
"Many women suffer from insomnia during menopause, and it's good to know that yoga may help them," said lead author.
"Hormone therapy is the only Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment for hot flashes and night sweats, and fewer women are opting for hormone therapy these days.
This is one of the reasons why, researchers undertook this new study titled Menopause Strategies: Finding Lasting Answers for Symptoms and Health. Researchers looked at how yoga, fish oil and exercise can help women deal with hot flashes. The study was conducted on 249 healthy, previously sedentary women at multiple sites. Each of them was asked to do yoga, a moderate aerobic exercise program, or neither. They were also asked to take an omega-3 fatty acid supplement or a placebo.
Researchers noted that exercise and yoga helped in improved sleep quality and lesser insomnia and depression but fish oil didn't improve sleep nor did it help in dealing with hot flashes or enhancing the mood of participants.

Arsenic in Environment And Heart Attack, Stroke Risk

People chronically exposed to low to moderate levels of arsenic in their environment may be more likely to suffer a heart attackstroke or other cardiovascular disease, a study  suggests.
Previous research has linked exposure to high levels of arsenic in drinking water (more than 100 micrograms per liter) with coronary heart disease, stroke, peripheral artery disease and carotid atherosclerosis.
Environmental health researchers decided to explore whether exposure to the lower levels of arsenic more commonly found in drinking water or food also would increase the risk of heart disease.
Regular exposure to more common levels of arsenic did indeed correlate to increased risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular disease, even after adjusting for other risk factors such as smoking, obesity and cholesterol levels, according to the findings.
"It's a chronic long-term health effect," he said. "We need to understand that cardiovascular disease is a very complex illness, and there are many environmental risk factors like arsenic which can contribute."
Although the study found that relatively common levels of arsenic in drinking water were associated with a higher risk of heart disease, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.
Groundwater likely provided the major source of arsenic exposure in some states, researchers said. Private wells in those states often exceed the  standard for arsenic in drinking water of 10 micrograms per liter, and are sometimes as high as 50 micrograms per liter.
Study participants provided urine samples that the research team used to estimate their exposure to inorganic arsenic.
Of the participants, nearly 450 died of cardiovascular disease and almost 1,200 developed either fatal or nonfatal cardiovascular disease. Researchers found that a person's risk of death from cardiovascular disease increased with their arsenic exposure.
The one-quarter of patients who showed the highest levels of arsenic in their urine had about a 50 percent increased risk of death by heart attack or stroke compared to those with the lowest levels of arsenic, Navas-Acien said.
Arsenic exposure also was associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
People who are concerned about their arsenic intake should have their drinking water tested, she said.
"In particular, people who live in small communities or have private wells should be aware of the arsenic levels in their drinking water," she said. "If you use groundwater and you don't know the levels of arsenic in your drinking water, that can be quite dangerous."
"The best advice we can give people is to eat food that comes from a variety of different regions, as opposed to being raised in a single location," she said.
People also should vary their day-to-day eating patterns, she said.
"There are children out there who drink apple juice every day," she said. "That's risky because we know there are elevated arsenic levels in juice. People need to diversify their diet."

SURPRISING REASONS FOR WEIGHT GAIN

What's With the Weight Gain?
If you started taking in more calories than usual or cutting back on exercise, you wouldn't be surprised if the numbers on the scale crept higher. But what if you're doing everything the same as you always do and your weight still goes up? It's time to delve a little deeper into what else might be going on.

Lack of Sleep
There are two issues at work with sleep and weight gain. The first is intuitive: If you're up late, the odds are greater that you're doing some late-night snacking, which will increase your calorie intake. The other reason involves what's going on biochemically when you're sleep deprived. Changes in hormone levels increase hunger and appetite and also make you feel not as full after eating.

Stress
When life's demands get too intense, our bodies go into survival mode: Cortisol, the "stress hormone," is secreted, which causes an increase in appetite. And then of course, we may reach for high-calorie comfort foods in times of stress as well. This combination is a perfect breeding ground for weight gain.

Antidepressants
An unfortunate side effect from some antidepressants is weight gain. Talk to your doctor about making changes to your treatment plan if you think your antidepressant is causing weight gain. But never stop or change your medication on your own. Realize that some people experience weight gain after beginning drug treatment simply because they're feeling better, which leads to a better appetite. Also, depression itself can cause changes in weight.

Steroids
Anti-inflammatory steroid medications like prednisone are notorious for causing weight gain. Fluid retention and increased appetite are the main reasons. Although weight gain is common, the severity of this side effect depends on the strength of the dose and length of time on the drug. Some people may also see a temporary redistribution of fat while taking the drug -- to places like the face, back of the neck, or the abdomen.

Drugs That May Cause Weight Gain
Several other prescription drugs have been associated with weight gain. The list includes antipsychotic drugs (used to treat mood disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorders), along with medications to treat migraines, seizures, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Work with your doctor to find a medication that treats your symptoms without disrupting side effects.

Don't Jump to Blame the Pill
Contrary to popular belief, there is lack of evidence that combination birth control pills (estrogen and progestin) cause lasting weight gain. It is thought that some women taking the combination pill may experience some weight gain related to fluid retention, but this is usually short-term. If you're still concerned about possible weight gain, talk to your healthcare provider.

Hypothyroidism
If your thyroid (the butterfly-shaped gland in the front of your neck) is not making enough thyroid hormone, you're probably feeling tired, weak, cold, and gaining weight. Without enough thyroid hormone, the metabolism slows, making weight gain more likely. Even a thyroid functioning at the lower end of the normal range might cause weight gain. Treating hypothyroidism with medication may reverse some of the weight gain.

Don't Blame Menopause
Most women do gain some weight around the time of menopause, but hormones probably aren't the only cause. Aging slows the metabolism, so you burn fewer calories, and changes in lifestyle (such as exercising less) play a role. But where you gain weight also may be related to menopause, with fat accumulating around your waist, not your hips and thighs.

Cushing's Syndrome
Weight gain is a common symptom of Cushing's syndrome, a condition in which you are exposed to too much of the hormone cortisol, which in turn causes weight gain and other abnormalities. Cushing's syndrome can occur if you take steroids for asthma, arthritis, or lupus. It can also occur when your adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone, or be related to a tumor. The weight gain may be most prominent around the face, neck or upper back, or waist.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is a common hormonal problem in women of childbearing age. Most women with PCOS grow many small cysts on their ovaries. The condition leads to hormone imbalances that affect a woman's menstrual cycle and can lead to excessive body hair and acne. Women with this condition are resistant to insulin, which may cause weight gain. The weight tends to collect around the abdomen, putting these women at greater risk for heart disease.

Quitting Smoking
On average, people who stop smoking gain less than 10 pounds. Why? Because without nicotine you may:
Feel hungrier and eat more (this feeling should go away after several weeks)
Experience a decrease in your metabolism, without reducing your calorie intake
Find food tastes better, which may lead to overeating
Eat more high-fat, high-sugar snacks and drink more alcohol

Rule 1: If You Do Gain Weight ...
Don't stop taking any medications without first consulting your doctor. Recognize the importance of the drug you're taking. It may be critical to your health.

Rule 2: If You Do Gain Weight ...
Don't compare yourself to other people taking the same drug. Not all people experience the same side effects on the same drug. Even if one drug caused someone else to lose weight, the same might not be true for you. Consult your doctor.

Rule 3: If You Do Gain Weight ...
Don't freak out if the weight gain is just from water retention, which is not permanent weight or fat. Once you've finished taking the drug or gotten the medical condition under control, the puffiness from fluid retention may subside. Stick to a lower-sodium diet in the meantime.

Rule 4: If You Do Gain Weight ...
Check with your doctor about another drug you can take. In many cases, your doctor can switch you to another medication that might not have the same side effects.

Rule 5: If You Do Gain Weight ...
Learn if the weight gain is from a decrease in metabolism -- from either a medical condition or medication. And if so, take the time to participate in metabolism-raising activities. Get moving!

Sore throats may be precursors to heart diseases

Raising community awareness by emphasising that untreated sore throat caused by group A streptococcal (GAS) infection can lead to acute rheumatic fever (ARF) or rheumatic heart disease RHD, is a huge part of the battle.

According to a Dr., the importance of creating awareness of the disease and its sequelae cannot be underestimated, especially in resource-limited conditions.

They said that the importance of these efforts needs to be recognised and barriers to awareness and education understood and overcome while health promotion research for acute rheumatic fever and RHD is prioritised. Maximised case detection within a community dictates that all members of that community are aware of the presentation and diagnosis of the disease, with the highest awareness needed amongst healthcare workers at primary healthcare level.

With increased awareness of the potential effects of sore throat, the authors believed that more families will be encouraged to seek medical help and prevent further cases of ARF or RHD.
"School and educational institutions should be targeted as the most vulnerable population for GAS infections are school-aged children. These have tremendous potential to improve the reach of primary and secondary prevention and case-detection," the authors said.

The authors also advocate for a change in attitudes from healthcare workers who see ARF or RHD as secondary to their plans to treat malaria, HIV, and TB, saying that ARF or RHD treatment can take place alongside treatment for these other life-threatening conditions.
Helping patients understand the treatment with information that is appropriate to their level of comprehension is also vital, using printed material, video, discussion and any other relevant techniques.

Why some people remain lean and others obese

Researchers have said that becoming obese or remaining lean can depend on the dynamics of the mitochondria, the body's energy-producing "battery."

Mitochondria are vital cellular organelles that generate and maintain proper energy levels in complex organisms. Using animal models, the  research team studied mitochondria in different populations of brain cells known to be involved in the regulation of appetite.

The team found that during the transition from a fasting to an over-fed state, mitochondria in neurons that promote hunger show dynamic changes that are the opposite of those found in neurons that control feelings of fullness.

Lead author  said that they have found that mitochondrion need to have ongoing dynamic plasticity in order to support neurons, which are necessary for appetite and for the maintenance of life.

He asserted that if these dynamic events - during which the mitochondria fuse to become more effective in generating energy - are disrupted, mitochondria become static, appetite-stimulating neurons become less active, and animals do not develop obesity when exposed to high-fat, high-calorie diets.

The co-lead author said these same cellular events have different consequences in neurons that promote feelings of fullness.

The study showed that similar molecular drivers control mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum interactions and related stress. If the cellular events are disrupted in these mitochondria, animals become morbidly obese.

Why people fail to lose weight despite being on diets

An Australian researcher will starve 100 obese women, and allow them to consume only 800 calories a day so that she can test if drastic and rapid weight loss could help beat the famine reaction.
Sydney University Associate Professor Amanda Salis' theory is that the chemicals called ketones- released when body's sugar stores are used up - will switch off the appetite increase which occurs after dieting and block a drop in the body's metabolic rate.

The principle that she's experimenting is the same idea that is behind the popular new five and two Fast Diet that is being pioneered by UK journalist Michael Mosley .

Professor Salis tested her theory on herself and as a result lost 28 kilos and kept it off for over 15 years by using intermittent dieting.

She said that she lost weight by repeatedly dieting for 2 weeks then having a 1-3 month period of weight maintenance in an attempt to beat the famine reaction.

Eating seven portions of fruit and veggies daily can cut risk of early death by 10pc

It is a well documented fact that eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day is the key to stay healthy, however a new study has revealed that by increasing the servings to seven portions we could decrease our risk of dying early.

Researchers have found people, who eat 569g a day- the equivalent of 7.1 portions- slash their risk of premature death by 10 per cent and live on average one year and 44 days longer.

The  research suggested that fruit and vegetables rich diet reduces the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 15 per cent.

While eating vegetables alone significantly cuts the risk, eating just fruit doesn't.
It was revealed that raw veggies are more effective and can help reduce the risk of premature death by 16 per cent.

The study  concluded that a combined fruit and vegetable consumption of more than 569g a day reduces the risk of mortality by 10 per cent and delays it by 1.12 years compared with a consumption of less than 249g a day.
