Stuck in a thought spiral? Here's how to break the loop

It takes just one thought to fall into a spiral. The unending loop of rumination and over-analysis can build stress and anxiety in ways you might not even realise. An expert shares how to navigate overthinking.

Do you replay conversations in your head after an interview ? Or fret over the tone of that one WhatsApp message? Maybe even that Instagram story that was probably not meant for you? You might be overthinking, and it’s not the flex you think it is.

Overthinking is a common habit. At first, it might seem harmless, even productive. But it often goes deeper than just 'thinking too much.' It typically involves looking at the same scenarios, worrying about what’s ahead, or regretting past decisions without working towards a real solution. This mental rerun quietly chips away at your peace and energy.

An emotional trap

Everyone’s been there - lying in bed, wishing to sleep, while the brain goes into full overdrive as if it has sipped on multiple cups of espresso.

Overthinking often mimics problem-solving but is actually a trap. “It often resembles finding solutions, but most times, it fuels stress and leaves you trapped and cluttered emotionally,” Bhavya Shah, psychologist at a Mumbai Hospital, tells India Today.

This process eventually leads to procrastination, second-guessing, and seeking external validation, usually a sign of lacking confidence in your own judgement.

This constant mental stimulation affects more than your thoughts; it messes with your sleep, focus, and even relationships. And when your mind’s exhausted, stress only piles up further.

The bottleneck effect

Experts note that overthinking creates mental bottlenecks. How exactly? When you dwell on something too long, your brain keeps processing the same thoughts, leaving little room for anything new. The decision-making process slows down, opportunities might slip away, and personal growth gets stifled.

Ruminating too much can affect personal growth

While some get stuck in the past ruminating over mistakes, regrets, or negative feedback, others over-plan for a future that hasn’t even happened. But thinking ahead is often useful, excessive anticipation can be paralysing. There’s a thin line between being careful and being consumed. As Bhavya Shah puts it, "If your thinking leads to action or peace, that’s good thinking. If it leads to more worry or paralysis, that’s overthinking."

Chaos to clarity

Addressing overthinking isn’t about shutting your brain down. It’s about managing it smartly. Shah shares a few strategies to cope:

  • Do a brain dump: Write down everything on your mind and let it out of your head and onto paper.
  • Set a worry window: Give yourself 15-20 minutes to worry. Once the time's up, shift your attention.
  • Use your senses: Listen to music, take a walk, splash cold water on your face. Ground yourself in your body.
  • Talk it out: Say it out loud to a friend, a therapist, or someone who gets it. Sometimes speaking offers more clarity than silent rumination.

It is only human to overthink. Everyone does it. The key lies in mindfully breaking the vicious cycle of overthinking one thought at a time.

Harvard doctor approved 5 foods that help lower blood pressure naturally

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a leading cause of premature death and cardiovascular disease across the globe. A silent killer, hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, and other serious illnesses. Keeping the blood pressure under control is crucial to keep life-threatening diseases at bay. While proper diet, exercise, and prescribed medications can help regulate blood pressure, certain foods can help you keep it in check.

Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a California-based gastroenterologist trained at Harvard and Stanford, with a million Instagram followers, has shared a list of fruits that can help lower blood pressure. Remember these dietary recommendations are not alternatives for medications, but they can certainly help.

Banana

 Banana

Bananas are a good source of potassium, a mineral that plays a critical role in regulating blood pressure. Dr. Sethi explains that potassium helps the kidneys flush out excess sodium, a key contributor to high blood pressure. You can add bananas to smoothies or eat them as a snack, and this can be an easy way to incorporate this nutrient into your daily diet.

Dark chocolate

 Dark chocolate

Yes, that’s right! Your occasional indulgence could save you from severe illnesses linked to high blood pressure. Indulging in dark chocolate may benefit more than just your taste buds. They are rich in magnesium and flavanols, and can lower blood pressure by boosting the production of nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels. A2010meta-analysis of studies suggested that flavanol-rich cocoa products, like dark chocolate, modestly reduced blood pressure in adults with hypertension. Ensure to pick dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa content, and remember to consume it in moderation.

Beetroot

 Beetroot

Beets are great for your overall health and are especially good for lowering blood pressure. Its high content of organic nitrates is converted by the body into nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels and improves blood flow. You can incorporate beetroot into salads, juices, or smoothies. Roasted beets or beetroot powder can also be effective options for those looking to amp up the flavour.

Pomegranates

 Pomegranates

Pomegranates are packed with antioxidants, particularly polyphenols, which have been shown to reduce blood pressure by lowering levels of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), a key regulator of blood pressure. A 2017reviewfound that pomegranate juice can reduce BP in both the short-term and long-term course. "These effects are accompanied by antioxidant and anti-atherosclerotic actions that collectively improve cardiovascular health. The anti-hypertensive effects have been reported for pomegranate juice. Both systolic and diastolic pressures are affected,” the study said.

Ginger

 Ginger

Ginger, which is a staple in many cuisines, acts as a natural calcium channel blocker, which can help relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure. It can also improve cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure. You can add fresh or powdered ginger to teas, stir-fries, or smoothies for its flavour and heart health benefits. While generally safe, it is important to consume ginger in moderation, as excessive intake may cause digestive discomfort in some individuals.

Walk more

Walking is simple, but so effective.

Stay agile

Agility and exercise will naturally bring down your blood pressure.

Eat a balanced diet

 Eat a balanced diet

Ensure to eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet. Incorporate whole grains, vegetables, legumes, lean proteins, fatty fish, and super-foods. Limit salt, sugar, and ultra-processed foods.

How to maintain high blood pressure?

Maintaining high blood pressure, or hypertension, is crucial for preventing serious health complications like heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. It primarily involves a combination of lifestyle modifications and, often, prescribed medication. Key strategies include adopting a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while limiting sodium, saturated fats, and processed foods. Regular physical activity, aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, is also vital, as is maintaining a healthy weight.

Talk to your doctor

Your doctor can advise you on effective ways to lower blood pressure.

10 Useful Tips to Derive Pleasure from Everyday Things

One of the hardest things about modern life is the creeping sense of banality, that every day is exactly the same, as you wake up at the same hour, go through the same motions, stand in the same traffic jam and do the same work. There is something extremely dehumanizing in this repetitive routine, but the trick to taking your humanity back is in understanding that things are not the same, and it’s up to you to spot the difference. Here’s how:

1. Savour Food
Joy tips: savor food

For thousands of years now, food hasn’t just been a matter of sustenance for us, humans, rather a culinary experience. Though we eat because we must, we also eat because we enjoy food. Commit to the pleasure food brings you. Let it roll around your palate before you chew it and swallow it down. Consider every bite and how it makes you feel. Eating this way, you will also feel fuller because you’ve extracted the most in terms of experience out of your meal.

2. Seek the Beautiful Wherever You Are

Joy tips: find beauty

Look around with your own private camera and seek the most beautiful thing in the frame, no matter where you are. The beautiful can be an object, a plant, an animal or a person, but it can also be a particular composition, the way the light falls on something, a pleasant color scheme, etc.

3. Ponder the Mundane
Think about the most trivial things and ask yourself questions about them; why is that town named that way, and who gave it that name? Why don’t grown men wear shorts? What do insects look like when they sleep, and why have I never seen one asleep? This is a great way to foster curiosity.

4. Ask Yourself How You’re Feeling
Look inwardly at your thoughts and emotions and try to observe them without judgment. Have a conversation with yourself (not out loud!) about the things that are bugging you and try to resolve them by giving yourself good advice. Heck, if you can help other people out, why shouldn't you be able to help yourself?

5. Walk more
Joy tips: walk
This isn’t just a matter of health and sports (though walking is almost never a bad idea), it’s about being present in the environment without the boundaries of glass panes. If you need to get somewhere by car or public transportation, get off a short walk away and travel the rest of the way by foot.

6. Look for Reasons to Laugh

Joy tips: laugh
Is it all a joke to you? Well, it should be, because as we all know, laughter is good for you. Look at all of the occurrences around you and find what’s amusing, ridiculous, absurd or hilarious about them, and laugh out loud and heartily (just not at people).

7. Engage in Conversations

Joy tips: communicate
Seek meaningful (if fleeting) connection with people, be they strangers or coworkers that you aren’t so familiar with. Look at small-talk as an opportunity to latch onto a small detail which will form the basis of your conversation. Actively listen to the stories people are telling you and let them lead.

8. Enjoy the Way
The road isn’t an inconvenience on your way from point A to B. It’s the world. Pay attention to traffic, but also appreciate the weather, the view, the music on the radio. Being in a rush while in a traffic jam won’t help much, so forget about time and frustration and focus on the things you can see and feel that bring you joy.

9. Share in Your Joy
Joy tips: share joy
Tell the people you love about those things that brought joy to your heart, make them laugh, make them reconsider those things they believe are tedious and boring, translate your joy into play and dare to be a little bit childish. Shine a bright light into your social circles.

10. Listen to Your Body
Eat if you’re hungry, but stop when you’re full. If your muscles feel sore, stretch them out. If you’re tired, take a short rest. Disregard the internal voices that are saying you aren’t making good use of your time by listening to your body's needs. Jobs, chores, assignments- everything comes second to your body.

Other simple ways to control your Blood Pressure

 stress health tip

Listen to music and dance to your heart's content- don't bother if anyone looks too.

It is good to go for a walk and enjoy the nature, try to hear a bird's call and guess which bird is it, when you spot them, try to identify them. Look around at various trees, see God has created so many shades of green. Look at the shape of each tree, how unique they're. Feel the breeze on your body, how it refreshes you.

When you face a problem or worried about something, it is better to talk it out. Mostly men don't discuss about their problems with wife or with anyone else. They keep it to themselves and brood over it. This will make your BP go high. It is always best to talk it out what's bothering you. Also remember at times, we worry about things which may not happen and over which we've no control. When we've no control over a matter, there's no point worrying about it, leave it to God, prayers are the most effective tool God has given us. When you pray with a clean heart, your prayers are always answered. Don't think of God only at times of problems, at each morning thank God for another day, at each meal thank God for it, as millions of people around the world don't even get 1 proper meal. at the end of the day again thank God for having given us another day to do something good.

When you breathe, learn to do abdominal breathing, i.e. when you inhale, your abdomen should bulge out, and as you breathe out you abdomen should go in. Be conscious of every breath you take, as life is uncertain, so don't sling on to anything or anyone, as then the loss is very difficult to bear.

Always think of those things which gave you happiness, forget totally about those events that made you sad, as there's no point thinking or brooding over the past bad thing, they'ld be erased from our memory for good.

When you meet your friends or relatives, give them a hug ( though it is not much practiced in India. Learn from our P.M., Mr. Modiji, the way he gives warm hugs to the world leaders whom he meets. By doing so, one passes on good vibration to others. Even the Pope wanted a hug from Modiji !

Every problem has a solution, try to look for it, than sinking what's going to happen. Use your brain to always find an answer, there will be a solution, only you've to use or focus your mind of the various solutions you may think of, and which one will give you the correct answer.

SMILE- it is very important to keep smiling. When you smile at someone, you're showing your warmth and friendly attitude. Remember as much as you don't like to see a grumpy face nor do others. Spread warmth through your smile, just because you smiled another one will smile and soon there will be miles and miles of miles just because you smiled ! Wouldn't that make you happy !  😁

7 Dementia-Friendly Activities All the Family Will Enjoy

Connecting with a family member with dementia is extremely important for their own sake, but can also be challenging, especially when memory loss is accompanied by speech difficulties and changes in mood or personality. If you have a family member or close friend suffering from dementia and you’re struggling to stay connected with them, know that you’re not alone. There are over 55 million dementia sufferers in the world, and the majority of those people have family and friends.

Remember that there are many ways you can spend quality time with a loved one with dementia, even if you can’t engage in activities you once enjoyed together today. In this post, we list a few excellent dementia-friendly family activities and provide tips that will help you decide what would work best for your family. How to Choose the Best Activities

When it comes to choosing the best types of activities for your friend or family member, there’s no universal answer or prepared list. We’re all individuals with our own character, preferences, hobbies, and lifestyle, and the kinds of activities that bring joy and meaning to your family member should fit their personality. Here are a few tips to consider when choosing a family activity with someone suffering from dementia:

*Take your family member’s unique skills into account. Did your spouse travel a lot or worked in a field that required specific skills before their diagnosis? Do they have hobbies, sports, or social interests they cherish? The answers to these questions can give you a clue as to what kinds of activities they would probably enjoy most. Don’t be in a rush. Give the person time and space to complete the activity on hand at their own pace. If necessary, break down each activity into actionable and simple steps, and remind each step as they progress.

*Be ready to change course. Your family member’s abilities may change from time to time. One day they may enjoy or be successful at a specific activity, but they can find it difficult or stressful to do so the next day. If that happens, switch gears and focus on a different activity.

*Focus on activities that are realistic but not boring. A key to real connection and fun is balance. Both boredom and frustration can kill your family member’s interest in an activity. Ideally, they should find meaning and value in the activity while also being capable to complete the tasks it requires.

*Tap into activities that activate motor memory. Actions and movements tend to stick around in the human brain for a really long time. Training and maintaining such actions, even if it’s small things like household chores, walking, or gardening, is often very beneficial for dementia sufferers, as it helps them feel capable, useful, and more connected to others.

* Adapt to your family member’s daily schedule. If you can only meet with your loved one in the afternoon but you know that they’re most active during the morning hours, don’t drag them on a walk. Choose a different, more relaxing activity like puzzle-solving instead.

Now, let’s move on to the recommended family activities you can enjoy with a loved one with dementia. We list 7 of such activities in this article and explain why they’re beneficial, but you can find many other suggestions here on the Alzheimer’s Association Website.

1. Open the trusty family photo archiveFamily Friendly Dementia Activities photo album
It doesn’t matter if it’s a physical photo album or a digital one, taking the time to sit down and look through cherished family memories captured on film can be a meaningful experience for the entire family. Old memories have the tendency to be retained for a longer time, so even a family member with advanced dementia can sometimes tap into these long-term memories through visual stimuli like photos or videos. Remembering the fun and memorable occasions together can help strengthen your family bonds.

2. Listen to music
Family Friendly Dementia Activities women listening to music
On a similar note, listening to music together or watching live performances of your loved one’s favorite musician can tap into old memories. Nostalgia is a powerful force. If there is a special song or artist you always listen to or dance to together, turn it on whenever your loved one needs to lift their mood. You can even compile a playlist of your loved one’s favorite songs and play them regularly.

In fact, there’s even research suggesting that music can help dementia sufferers evade depression and slow down cognitive decline. Dancing to upbeat nostalgic tunes is also extremely helpful, as many dementia sufferers tend to retain a sense of rhythm longer than many other abilities.

3. Plan a movie night
Do you have a family tradition of watching the same movie with your sibling at Christmastime? Or maybe, one of the first dates you went with your spouse included a trip to the cinema… Just like dancing, photos, and music, familiar films can rekindle seemingly lost memories. Rewatching cinema classics with the entire family is a terrific tradition and relaxing activity everyone will enjoy.

4. Do housework or cook together
Family Friendly Dementia Activities women doing housework
Housework may not sound particularly exciting to you, but your family member with dementia may find comfort and confidence in such regular activities. These regular activities will keep your family member moving and provide tactile experiences that feel familiar. Instead of feeling depressed, this can make your loved one feel useful.

The best suitable household tasks are simple, repetitive, and such that can be done together, for example:
-Folding laundry
- Sweeping
- Vacuuming
- Organizing the wardrobe
- Doing dishes
- Wiping down countertops
- Cooking family recipes.

5. Take a walk
Family Friendly Dementia Activities seniors on a walk
The benefits of walks are plenty, and it’s a simple activity you can practice with your loved one year-round. When the weather is sunny, you can go on a nature walk or a walk through the park or the neighborhood, and when it’s overcast, you can walk through the local mall or enjoy a trip to the botanical garden.

Even if your loved one is in a wheelchair, getting some fresh air will be beneficial for them, and it can spark a conversation about the weather and the surroundings. Remember that spending time with your loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s outdoors is quite important, as they cannot go on walks and trips on their own.

 6. Enjoy a fun board game or card game
Family Friendly Dementia Activities board game
Brain teasers and intellectual games are the perfect fit for dementia patients. According to professionals, incorporating mental stimulation together with social activities in daily life can help dementia and Alzheimer’s patients retain their cognitive abilities for a longer time.

Whenever choosing a game, it’s best to focus on familiar and simple ones like Scrabble, Chutes and Ladders, Dominoes, Bingo, or classic card games like Go Fish. New games may confuse your loved ones with dementia or make them frustrated or stressed. Similarly, don’t be hard on a family member if they make an odd mistake in the rules or forget someone’s name. It’s best to just let small errors like these slide.

7. Have family fun with puzzles
Family Friendly Dementia Activities solving puzzles
If you’ve got more than an hour or two of family time available, working on a puzzle is an activity you should definitely consider. These can be traditional picture puzzles, crosswords, or even 3D puzzle toys - there’s a huge variety of puzzles available these days both in stores and online. Like other games, puzzles are a great mental workout that will preserve your loved one’s cognition for a longer time. Plus they’re fun for both kids and adults, so the entire family will be able to enjoy an evening with puzzles.
