Early symptoms of Parkinson's disease

Symptoms of full-blown Parkinson disease (PD) are easy to identify. Essentially these consist of tremors, slowness of all activities, stiffness of muscles and poor balance with tendency to fall. Anyone with these symptoms falls under the category of Parkinson Disease and needs medical assistance.

It is difficult to identify these symptoms at an early stage. Also, the symptoms start so insidiously, and creep in very slowly, which makes it difficult for the common people to detect the disease when it is setting in.

A Professor and Head, Department of Neurology, however, helps you to identify these at an early stage.

There are some symptoms which are called pre-motor symptoms. These appear early and hardly are noticeable. Prominent among these are constipation, depression, acting out dreams during sleep (known as REM sleep behaviour disorder or RBD), decreased sensitivity of smell perception which are misunderstood with other disorders. Having said this, people with all these symptoms do not eventually develop Parkinson's disease as these are very common symptoms. However, studies show that those who have any of them are more likely to develop Parkinson's disease. So, it is important to watch your elderly ones closely and detect it on time.

There are some other symptoms such as internal feeling of tremor, increased tiredness or fatigue. Some of these resemble features of an older person or someone who is depressed but must be watched with hawk eyes. These symptoms are bent posture on standing and walking, festination while walking, some tremulousness of hands (old person) and drooping face, absent or diminished facial expressions, drooped neck.

For those people who have a family member affected with Parkinson's disease and are always fearful that they may also develop Parkinson's disease, one shouldn't worry too much. Familial Parkinson's disease occurs in only 10-15 percent of people; it usually occurs without a family history of Parkinson's disease. With the help of science and technology there is now a Deep Brain Stimulation option available for patients. One should also get expert advice on how to handle patients who suffer from the disease.

Obesity Can Affect Children’s Working Memory

Obese children have lower working memory in comparison to children with normal weight, a new study has demonstrated. The study published in JAMA Pediatrics and performed at the University of Vermont and Yale University found that obese children had a thinner prefrontal cortex than normal-weight children. The thinner cortex could be a factor in the decreased executive function earlier studies observed among children with higher BMI. Jennifer Laurent, an associate professor in the Department of Nursing at the University of Vermont said,

Our results show an important connection; that kids with higher BMI tend to have a thinner cerebral cortex, especially in the prefrontal area.”

The study was based on the data which followed 10,000 teens over a 10 year period. Every two years, study subjects are interviewed, given a battery of tests, gave blood samples and underwent brain scans.

The study analyzed results from 3,190 nine- and 10-year-olds recruited at 21 ABCD sites in 2017.

This rigorous research supported the conclusions of its predecessor, who appeared to have a poorer working memory for participants with higher BMI.

Ms Laurent further mentioned that the hypothesis of the study was that the thickness of the cerebral cortex would mediate the relationship between BMI and executive function.
One of the researchers of the study said,

We found widespread thinning of the cerebral cortex. That’s significant because we know that executive function, things like memory and the ability to plan, are controlled in that area of the brain.

More research is necessary to determine how the three variables are related.

From rodent models and adult studies, it has been shown that obesity can induce low-grade inflammatory effects, which actually do alter the cellular structure and can lead to cardiovascular disease. With prolonged exposure to obesity, it is possible that children have chronic inflammation, and that may actually be affecting their brain in the long term.

If that were the case, there would be significant public health implications, Ms Laurent said.

We would want to proactively encourage changes in kids’ diets and exercise levels at a young age with the understanding that it’s not only the heart that is being affected by obesity, it is perhaps also the brain.

The decrease in working memory was, however, a statistical observation.

We did not look at behaviour. It’s very important that this work not further stigmatize people who are obese or overweight. What we’re saying is that, according to our measures, we are seeing something that bears watching. How and if it translates to behaviour is for future research to determine, Ms Laurent added.

Everything New Scientists Learned About Hypertension in 2019

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is one of the most prevalent health conditions in the world, affecting 1 in 4 men and 1 in 5 women on a worldwide scale according to the World Health Organization. Nearly 1.13 billion people in the world are suffering from the condition, and less than half have the condition under control, which is very alarming given that high blood pressure is known to contribute to heart attacks and heart failure, stroke, and kidney failure.
Needless to say, the scale of this global problem makes it the subject of continuous research, and every year, scientists learn more about the causes and ways to treat and prevent hypertension. Here are the most intriguing and noteworthy hypertension research findings of 2019:

1. Taking Midday Naps Can Help Reduce Blood Pressure

An afternoon nap may be as effective as other lifestyle changes (e.g. cutting out alcohol from your diet) at reducing your blood pressure - found a Greek study published in early March of 2019. The scientists measured an average 5.3 mm Hg drop in systolic blood pressure of the study participants, who were diagnosed with pre-hypertension and had an average 129.9 mm Hg systolic blood pressure.
This is a significant drop in blood pressure since a difference as small as 2 mm Hg can sometimes be the deciding factor of whether or not someone suffers a heart attack or other cardiovascular emergencies. So, if you have the luxury of taking a quick midday-nap, take the chance every time, and your heart and cardiovascular system will thank you for it.

2. Moderately High Blood Pressure May Be Actually Beneficial to Some

Another European study, this time from Germany, challenged what we consider 'normal blood pressure' in adults past the age of 80. This longitudinal study was published in July of 2019, and it discovered that it may actually be better NOT to lower blood pressure below 140/90 since they found that blood pressure below that margin increased the risk of death in the population that was 80 and older by 40%.

3. Spirulina Supplements Are Capable of Reducing Blood Pressure

Spirulina is a popular 'superfood' supplement people take for various reasons starting from weight loss to metabolic issues and immune health. Essentially, the product is the dried biomass of the marine bacterium Spirulina platensis, which happens to be rich in a number of nutrients, vitamins, and protein while being very low in calories.
Among the most common uses of spirulina is as a contributing treatment of hypertension, and a recent study did not just find that it is capable of reducing blood pressure, but also explained why that is the case. The researchers discovered a specific protein that our body produces as a result of digesting spirulina. This protein, named SP6, causes blood vessels to relax, and the authors suggest that it may be developed into a new, even more effective, treatment of hypertension.

4. Your Oral Health Affects Blood Pressure, Too

image.gif
A beautiful smile may not just be the reflection of your oral health and impeccable oral hygiene, but it can also reveal your risks of hypertension. One study published in September showed that the presence of gum disease, or periodontitis, can increase one's risk of high blood pressure by 49%. The more advanced the gum issue, the more likely you are to suffer from hypertension - the authors of the study concluded.
Another study also linked the use of antibacterial mouthwash that contained the chemical called chlorhexidine with increased blood pressure just after one week of use. The researchers suggest that the antibacterial agent kills beneficial mouth bacteria, which produce an important chemical that naturally relaxes the blood vessels called nitric oxide. So. maybe using mouthwash isn't worth it, after all.

5 Natural Ways to Treat Eczema

Having eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is not only what you see on the skin, but the itching and burning associated with it can be very painful as well. Many symptoms of eczema include bumps, dry skin, itchiness, a rash or redness, and peeling or flaking. Normally, a medical professional will recommend trying an over-the-counter ointment or even have to prescribe medication if necessary. There are other options to pursue that can be more natural than resorting to medication for less severe cases.

Here is a list of treating eczema with natural remedies:

1. Colloidal oatmeal

When a person is experiencing eczema, their skin is dry in certain spots, which causes itchiness. Colloidal oatmeal helps this dryness by pulling moisture to the skin and then provides a protective barrier to lock in the moisture. You can apply colloidal oatmeal to your skin by either using it as a soap, lotion, or ointment to provide soothing effects. Most people have luck with taking a colloidal oatmeal bath. There are even versions safe for a baby to use if they are experiencing atopic dermatitis as well.

2. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is said to help with many different health issues, like weight loss and blood pressure. But, there are studies linking apple cider vinegar to help with eczema as well. Like colloidal oatmeal, apple cider vinegar can be used multiple ways to treat eczema. You can add two cups of apple cider vinegar to a warm bath. Or you can make a wrap, where you mix apple cider vinegar with warm water, and wrap the affected areas in clean fabric or gauze.

3. Triggers to avoid
Eczema flare ups can happen whenever your skin is around irritants. Some triggers to avoid include cigarette smoke, dry skin, certain fragrances, wool and polyester fabrics, soaps, detergents and cleaners, and some metals like nickel.

4. Eczema diet

Although it is a skin condition, eczema can also be treated with foods you eat. Foods that are anti-inflammatory, have probiotics, or contain quercetin can help keep flare ups at bay. Fatty fish is one food that would help with the fight against eczema because it is an anti-inflammatory food. Examples of foods with quercetin include apples, kale, broccoli, and blueberries. Foods that tend to be high in probiotics include sourdough bread, gouda cheese, and miso soup.

5. Aloe vera gel
Although commonly known for helping with sunburns, aloe vera gel can be a great way to soothe irritated dry spots. Like mentioned with colloidal oatmeal, eczema needs moisture. Aloe vera gel provides the moisture the skin needs, as well as the prevention of infection from eczema too.

Overall, there are many natural ways to treat eczema before resorting to medication. From avoiding irritants and eating certain foods, to apple cider vinegar wraps and colloidal oatmeal baths, there are many options to try out depending on the severity of your eczema. Finding ways to manage eczema, or at least it’s symptoms, will help not only the appearance of your skin, but it can also help manage the pain and discomfort associated with it. If you have any questions about your health, please contact a medical professional.

Onion juice for hair growth

This remedy is regarded as one of most effective and oldest ones. The reason behind is that it contains sulphur that boosts collagen production in the tissues and helps in the re-growth of hair.

Don't let its strong smell keep you away from using it, because it goes off just after one rinse.

To try this remedy, cut a few slices of onion and squeeze out its juice (either by mashing it or grating it) and apply it on your scalp for about 10-15 minutes.

Let it work its magic and then rinse it off with a mild shampoo.

Amazing benefits of coconut water for hair growth

Almost everyone on the planet knows that coconuts have a wealth of health benefits that are amazing for our bodies from head to toe. Another thing that is known across the globe - hair issues. Everyone faces breakage, split ends, oily scalp, dry scalp and the list goes on and on. While there are various home remedies you can make to rectify hair issues, coconut water can do your hair a world of good and allow it to grow in a healthy way. What makes it so good to treat these issues? It is packed with vital vitamins and minerals to keep the hair nourished. All these elements help to get rid of that dry, frizzy mess and make your hair soft and shiny. Here are a few ways you can improve hair growth using coconut water.

Coconut Water
Using coconut water on your hair helps to keep it hydrated and provide the scalp with nourishment. It also helps to stimulate blood circulation in that area. Gently massage about half a cup's worth of coconut water all over your scalp. Do this for at least five minutes. Apply the rest of it on your hair for 20 minutes. To really up your game wrap your hair in a hot towel. Once that's done, wash your hair with a mild shampoo and warm water. Use this treatment at least three times a week.

Coconut water with apple cider Vinegar
A hair treatment that includes coconut water and apple cider vinegar will help to condition your hair thoroughly. This blend also helps to get rid of product buildup, dirt and grease. The mixture also works to control the oil production on your scalp and balance pH levels. Combine a cup of coconut water with just a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Leave the mixture on your hair for a few minutes before you wash it off. Ideally, you should apply this product twice a week.

 Coconut water with lemon juice
While the coconut water keeps the hair hydrated, the lemon juice helps to boost collagen production, which helps to make your hair grow faster. It also helps the scalp maintain pH balance, as well as get rid of all the grease and dirt. Another benefit is that the lemon juice contains a rich amount of vitamin C, which is beneficial for your hair. To make this treatment, combine a tablespoon of lemon juice with half a cup of coconut water. Make sure to massage the mixture well into your scalp before you apply it on your hair. Leave the application on for at least 15 minutes. Wash it off with a mild shampoo. You only need to use this treatment once a week to get the most out of it.

Coconut water with Aloe Vera
Coconut water and aloe vera are two of the most nourishing ingredients you can provide your hair with. This combo can help tackle a host of hair issues like dandruff, itchy and dry scalp. It will also work to make your hair silky smooth. To make this treatment, combine two teaspoons of aloe vera juice and jojoba oil with half a cup of coconut water. Add the mixture in a spray bottle so you can apply it more easily all over your hair. You can store it for at least four days. Apply this treatment on your hair at least three times a week for best results.

For a healthy hair growth

Our skin as well as hair requires extra time and care as both of these are subjected to harsh chemicals through cleansing agents, pollution, chemically-grown fruits and vegetables, harsh water, stress and tension, improper nutrition, lack of proper sleep, exercise and inadequate intake of water.

Thick healthy hair is possible and there are certain super foods, which, if included in your diet can help you have better health and better hair too.

Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc and this helps cellular production, cell division and growth to form keratin, a protein that makes up hair. Zinc is known to preserve the hair colour and can also be found in lentils, sesame seeds, lamb, chickpeas and oysters. Zinc also prevents dandruff, further keeping hair fall at bay.

Eggs
Eggs promote hair growth and not only make them thicker but stronger as well. Eggs also come loaded with a combination of protein and biotin, both of which are super nutrients for healthy hair.

Fatty Fish
Fish like mackerel, salmon and herring are super foods for the hair as they are abundantly rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon is loaded with vitamin D and protein, which supports strong hair and a healthy scalp.

Berries
High in antioxidants, berries are a superfood for hair. The high antioxidant content helps protect hair follicles from damaging. Strawberries, blueberries, and cranberries; these robust juicy fruits are rich in vitamin C, which aids in collagen production and iron absorption, two factors that promote hair growth.

 Sweet Potatoes
A medium-sized sweet potato contains enough beta-carotene to provide more than four times your daily vitamin A needs. Include this easily available vegetable in your daily diet and see the improvement in your hair.

Spinach
It is one of my all time personal favourite and is full of nutrients like vitamin A and C, iron and folate.
Being a great plant-based source of iron, it helps red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body and fuels the metabolism to aid growth and repair hair damage.
Vitamin A found in these dark leaves helps the skin glands produce sebum, which in turn keeps the hair and scalp moisturised and healthy.
