15 Retinol-Rich Foods To Stimulate Collagen

It's a well-known fact that topically applying retinol  can make a major difference when it comes to reversing damage to your skin. An active form of vitamin A, retinol is considered the gold-star anti-aging ingredient when it comes to smoothing lines, clearing acne, and reversing sun damage. But you don't have to simply incorporate it into your nighttime routine: Vitamin A is available in your diet, too.

“Diet plays a significant role in our skin’s health and appearance,” says a dermatologist. “There are studies to support that increased vitamin intake helps skin in both the aging space and acne.”

Here's how you can take advantage of vitamin A in your diet to improve your skin.

Benefits of vitamin A

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin (more on that later) that is key for a healthy body. “The human body does not produce vitamin A, so it must be obtained externally through our diet and skincare,” the Dr. says. “Retinol, like other retinoids, is a derivative of vitamin A. When applied topically to the skin, it is converted to retinoic acid, the active form of vitamin A in the body.”

When it comes to the edible form, vitamin A comes in two forms: retinol, which is found in foods that originate from animals, and carotenoids, which are derived from plant-based foods and converted into vitamin A when digested.

“Appropriate vitamin A intake helps support healthy skin, hair, and nails,” Dr. Engelman adds. “Vitamin A plays a role in regulating sebum production and cell turnover, which are important for maintaining a healthy skin barrier (including the scalp) and supporting the hair growth cycle. Vitamin A is also necessary for the synthesis of keratin, which is a vital structural protein for both hair and nails.”

Daily requirement of vitamin A

Daily vitamin A requirements vary depending on age, sex, and health conditions (if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, that changes it, too). According to the Mayo Clinic, adult males should take 900 micrograms (mcg) and adult women should take 700 mcg. It is important to note that the body does not need large amounts of vitamin A every day, but regular, balanced intake is essential to maintain the right balance and prevent deficiencies.

A warning about vitamin A-rich foods

“It’s important to note that consuming too much vitamin A can actually be very toxic for the human body, leading to a condition known as ‘hypervitaminosis A,’” adds Dr. Engelman. “This can result in a number of unwanted and potentially dangerous side effects—including, ironically, a disrupted and unhealthy skin barrier, and hair loss. Therefore, it is very important to avoid excessive consumption of vitamin A (or any compound!) and speak with your doctor to determine the diet that’s best for you.”

15 vitamin A-rich foods

  • 3 ounces of liver (especially beef or chicken), which will meet the daily dose
  • 1 cup of fortified dairy products like milk, roughly 185 mcgs
  • ½ cup cantaloupe, roughly  135 mcg
  • 1 large hard-boiled egg, 75 mcg
  • 3 ounces of salmon, roughly  60 mcg
  • ½ cup raw carrots, roughly 460 mcg
  • ½ cup spinach, roughly 570 mcg
  • ½ cup raw red peppers, roughly 120 mcg
  • 1 sweet potato with skin, which will meet the daily dose
  • chard, roughly 55 mcg
  • 5 dried sulfured apricots, roughly65 mcg
  • 1 whole mango, roughly 115 mcg

Fix your hair problems, headaches, digestive issues, cold, flu with Rosemary

If you suffer from hair loss, your hair lacks shine and luster or you have a lot of split ends, then it's about time you're told about the hair benefits of rosemary.
rosemary, hair loss, hair problems
Rosemary grows all year long, especially in hot and dry climates. Its green and grey leaves are needle-shaped with a blue flowering.

This is an ancient herb that has been used in many cultures over thousands of years. Conventional medicine has used it mainly to treat headaches, migraines and digestive problems.

However, it turns out that rosemary is good for at least one more thing - it has the ability to strengthen the hair roots and prevent loss.

The method is extremely simple, and the secret is in the brewing!

How to make a Rosemary brew?

First, take a little branch of rosemary, and pick off the leaves.

Second, put the leaves in a pot of water and bring to the boil.

Third, after it boils, you'll need to let the brew cool (with the leaves in it) for 24 hours.

After 24 hours, you can take out the leaves and transfer the brew to a container that you can store in the refrigerator to keep fresh.

How to use the brew?
When you're taking a shower and washing your hair, wet your scalp and pour the rosemary brew on it. You should massage your scalp to make sure your hair is really soaked in the brew.

Since the brew has been sitting in the fridge, it may be uncomfortable for a few seconds before you get used to it.

There is no need to use the entire batch - just enough to cover all of your hair.

After you massage the rosemary in, do not wash your hair, rather put a towel over it and leave it for about 10 minutes to allow the brew to seep into the weak hair roots.

The towel may turn red, but this will come off in the laundry. Your hair will become shinier and stronger, and will not break as much.

After using the brew, you'll be free to return to your regular shower schedule. You can use it every day, since it is a natural, and not a chemical solution.

Other uses for Rosemary

For head lice: Brew 50 grams of rosemary in a liter of boiling water for 15 minutes, and then filter. Then allow the mixture to cool. When in the shower, pour on your head after having washed it.

For a head cold, the flu, headache, throat inflammation and digestive diseases: brew 5-7 leaves of rosemary in a glass of hot water, make sweet with honey, soak for 3 minutes and drink.

Drink Your Way to Better Immunity with These 5 Teas

Tea has been around for thousands of centuries, and there's a good reason why. Numerous studies show that traditional tea made from Camellia sinensis leaves is not only a soothing warm drink, but it may also help ward off cancer, type 2 diabetes, and arthritis.

This brew was once considered an official medicine in ancient Chinese culture. While it is still a component of today's herbal remedies, these days you'll find hundreds of different teas that are said to fight various diseases. Warm tea has also been proven to stimulate the digestive system as well as boost immunity, ease stress and enhance physical endurance.

Sip on the five teas below to help boost your health:

1. Oolong tea
 tea
Health benefit: weight loss

According to research, drinking oolong tea may give your metabolism a boost and increase the body's energy levels. This lightly fermented black tea can help you shed a few pounds by increasing the number of calories you burn. While the reasons for this aren't completely known, scientists think the caffeine and flavanols, typically found in black and green teas may work as fat-burning agents. This tea is often served in Chinese restaurants. It's got a sweet and fruity taste that is good served both hot or cold. One serving generally yields around 75mg of caffeine, about half the amount in a cup of coffee. So, whether you are looking for a little pick-me-up or something to supplement your weight loss regime, steep some of this tea.

Here's How: Place 1 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons of oolong tea in a pot or cup, either directly or in an infuser. Pour 6 ounces pre-boiled water over the tea leaves. Steep anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes.

2. Peppermint and holy basil tea
 tea
Health benefit: liver protection and immunity

This minty tea is refreshing and can be enjoyed steaming or chilled. The peppermint will help relax the stomach, while the holy basil (tulsi) is a super herb widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. Deemed the mother medicine of nature, tulsi has a broad array of healing property ranges from preventing infections to taming anxiety. Numerous studies show that holy basil can also protect the liver and kidneys from damage caused by ingesting pesticides and industrial chemicals, sometimes found in fruits and vegetables.

Here's How: To make the tea, boil the water and pour a teaspoon of holy basil leaves. Allow to steep for 3 to 5 minutes. Holy basil pairs well with other extras including a blend of herbs such as peppermint, lemon or ginger, or a dash of honey!

3. Rhodiola tea

Health benefit: improved endurance and exercise recovery

If you suffer from anxiety, Rhodiola tea is a great place to start. Studies have also found it to increase endurance and quicker exercise recovery time. The tea doesn't contain caffeine so it will leave you feeling energized without suffering from an energy crash later on. Its flavor is subtle, with hints of rose.

Here's How: Once the roots are dried and ground, 5 grams of finely chopped Rhodiola root can be steeped in hot water. If you have a steeper, you can prepare the tea with that, if not, pack tea bags with the root. The water should be hot, but the roots should not be exposed to temperatures higher than 85 degrees Fahrenheit, as it can damage the active ingredients in the root. Usually, the tea is left to steep for extended periods of time.

4. Seaweed tea

Health benefit: essential mineral boost

While you may have eaten seaweed before, have you ever given much thought to drinking it? Seaweed offers the broadest range of minerals in comparison to other food. It contains thyroid-protecting iodine, immune-boosting vitamin C and energizing iron. Brewing it will enable you to take advantage of its nutritional benefits. It also contains about 60 trace minerals essential for the human body. Regular intake of seaweed maintains hair health and promotes growth.

Tip: Your best bet would be to find edible seaweed tea from a health store and follow package instructions.

5. Apple cider vinegar tea

Health benefit: blood sugar control Apple cider vinegar has been used for just about anything. It can be used to eliminate blemishes or to lose weight, alongside many other things. It has been touted as a natural cure-all and perhaps one of its biggest perks is that it can lower blood sugar when consumed with starchy foods, making it a helpful tool for those managing type 2 diabetes. One drawback is that it's highly acidic and may possibly damage your tooth enamel. For this reason, it's best diluted with water, and preparing it as a tea.

Here's How: Combine and stir 1 cup warm water, 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and a dash of cayenne.
