10 Tips for Cleaning With Salt

There seems to be no one in the modern world without salt in their kitchen. This white seasoning is used in almost every dish we prepare, but it has many other uses that you should know about. Today you’ll learn 10 ways you can use salt to make cleaning so much easier for yourself. I recommend doing number 8 every weekend.

1. Clean broken eggs
Did you accidentally drop an egg on the floor? Cleaning it up will require lots of paper towels unless you use this tip. Sprinkle salt on the broken egg and let it be absorbed for a few minutes. You’ll then only need one paper towel to clean up the mess.

2. Remove sticky residue from an iron
Is your iron a little sticky? Turn it on to maximum heat for a few minutes. As it warms up, take wax paper or a newspaper and sprinkle salt over it. Now move the iron in a circular motion over the salt - the salt will catch the sticky residue and leave it on the paper.

3. Clean wine spilled on the carpet
salt
Spilled some wine on the carpet? Whether red or white, you can easily clean it up by pouring some baking soda on it and covering it with salt. Let the salt absorb as much liquid as possible, and when the area dries, simply vacuum up the salt and baking powder.

4. Clean lipstick stains from glasses  salt
Have you finished drinking some wine and left behind a lipstick stain? If the stain is stubborn and doesn’t come out in the dishwasher or after handwashing, simply rub some salt on to it and watch it disappear.

5. Clean and disinfect your wooden cutting board
salt
A cutting board can be a source of bacteria and disease if it's not cleaned properly. Therefore, you should rub half a lemon over the wood, pour salt on to it, wait 10-15 minutes, and then scrub with the lemon again. If the lemon dries, squeeze it and continue cleaning.

6. Extinguish kitchen fires
If a fire suddenly starts in one of your pans, water will not necessarily put it out, as it is likely that what’s burning is oil. Instead of using water, quickly open your salt jar and just pour it over the pan. The salt will prevent oxygen from reaching the fire and suffocate it quickly so that you and the kitchen won’t be harmed.
7. Clean Pots and Pans
Did you burn your food and are now stuck with stubborn residue? The simplest way to clean it is by pouring salt over the pan and adding water. This mixture will help loosen all the burnt grime and after ten minutes you can wash the pan easily. You can also use this method on burnt oil in the oven.

8. Clean sponges
You washed the pan, but are now left with a black and dirty sponge? Just fill a small container with 2 cups of water and a quarter cup of salt, put the sponge in and leave it in there overnight. When you take it out in the morning, it'll be like new. It's recommended doing this at least once a week, whether the sponge is stained or not.

9. Clean ceramic tiles
Sometimes the usual detergents we buy aren’t enough to clean ceramic tiling efficiently. If you want to thoroughly clean the bathroom, mix together one cup of turpentine and one cup of salt (wear protective gloves and open the windows as you shouldn't breathe in the turpentine gases). Apply the paste onto a sponge and scrub away. After about a minute, you'll see that the stains you've gotten used to over the years will start to disappear.

10. Clear clogs
Cleaning the bathroom and suddenly realize that your drain’s clogged? Here's what you need to do. First, remove any hairs stuck in the drain, then mix a quarter cup of baking soda and a quarter cup of salt. Pour the powder mixture directly into the drain, and then pour a half cup of vinegar quickly over it. The solution will begin to foam and release the clog within 15 minutes. Then just pour hot water into the drain to get rid of any powder residue.

Why Overhydration is Dangerous to Your Health

We are always being told that it's vital that we remember not to get too dehydrated, but it's just as important to understand that there is such a thing as overhydration, and it can be very dangerous too. Ad

Overhydration is More Dangerous Than Dehydration Overhydration is dangerous

Overhydration is dangerous

A report on the dangers of overhydration was compiled by sports medicine experts and presented at the 2015 CrossFit Conference on Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia in California. In the report, sports medicine experts say that overhydration is more dangerous than dehydration.

Dr. James Winger, the lead report author, says that “the risks associated with dehydration are small. No one has ever died on a sports field from dehydration, and the adverse effects of mild dehydration are questionable. But athletes, on rare occasions, have died of overhydration.”

For ages, athletes have been urged to consume large quantities of water in order to avoid muscle cramping and heat stroke. However, according to Dr. Winger, these ailments are not caused by dehydration. This report is part of a movement to update recommendations and guidelines regarding sports-related hydration.

Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia Can be Life-Threatening

A condition known as exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH), or overhydration, causes the kidneys to become overworked. When this occurs, the cells swell up and they are unable to produce the needed amounts of sodium. EAH can occur anytime during an athletic performance or up to 24 hours afterward.

As the researchers explained in their report, “from a practical standpoint, it’s the smaller individuals and those who participate at a slower pace and drink more than sweat losses that are more likely to develop EAH. Although the incidence of women experiencing EAH is greater than that of men, adjusted for BMI and racing time, the apparent sex difference is not statically significant.”

Use Thirst as a Guideline for When to Drink Fluids
Overhydration is dangerous
The researchers wrote that “using the innate thirst mechanism to guide fluid consumption is a strategy that should limit drinking in excess and developing hyponatremia while providing sufficient fluid to prevent excessive dehydration.”

It’s thought that athletes could lose up to 3% of their body weight from water loss while participating in sports and that the slight dehydration wouldn’t interfere with their athletic performance.

The researchers went on to say that “since drinking fluid volume above sweat and urinary losses during and after activity is the main pathophysiological mechanism underlying asymptomatic, symptomatic, and fatal cases of EAH, prevention is dependent on drinking less. Thirst should provide adequate stimulus for preventing excess dehydration and markedly reduce the risk of developing EAH in all sports.”

Early Symptoms Can be Overlooked
The early warning signs of overhydration include headaches, confusion, nausea, vomiting, and disorientation. Unfortunately, these signs are often overlooked, which can lead to more serious side effects. The more serious symptoms include muscle spasms, muscle cramping, weakness, unconsciousness, seizures, and coma.

When taking part in physical activities, it’s best to drink when thirsty, during and after. If you have the above symptoms and are concerned, it never hurts to have them checked out.

7 Surprising Symptoms of Dehydration

Summer is here, and one of the biggest plights of the warmer months is dehydration. Most of us think of dehydration as a dramatic, obvious effect, but the concept of dehydration covers an array of stages. You might just need to drink an extra glass of water or two, but more severe dehydration could potentially lead to life-threatening complications.

The problem is knowing when you’re in the early stages of dehydration. Some of the common signs could easily be associated with other things. So as summer heats up, we gathered a few unexpected signs and symptoms that you need to start drinking more water, ASAP.

1. Bad breath
While less than pleasant breath by itself doesn’t necessarily mean you’re dehydrated, it could definitely be a sign. Dehydration prevents your body from producing sufficient amounts of saliva, which could lead to bacterial overgrowth in the mouth.

It’s the same reason you wake up with “morning breath'': Saliva has antibacterial properties, but its production slows down during sleep. As a result, you wake up with an unpleasant taste in your mouth, as bacteria grow. So if your mouth often feels parched and your breath smells less than fresh, it may be time to rehydrate.

2. Dry or flushed skin
Surprising Signs of Dehydration To Watch Out For dry skin
Many people believe that dehydration leads to excessive sweating, but in fact, this is only one stage of dehydration. ”As you go through various stages of dehydration, you get very dry skin,” explained Dr. John Higgins, a professor of medicine at the University of Texas in Houston, to Everyday Health. He also noted that the skin may appear flushed.

Another symptom of dehydration to look out for is skin that remains “tented” after being pinched. If the skin takes some time to return to its normal state it means it lost some of its elasticity - a clear sign that you need to increase the quantity of water you drink.

3. Muscle cramps
Surprising Signs of Dehydration To Watch Out For muscle cramp
Experts think that the reason people get muscle cramps after working out is dehydration and electrolyte depletion. The latter occurs when the body loses a lot of fluid through sweating. As a result, it is left without sufficient levels of sodium and potassium. Those minerals help balance pH levels in your body and also control nervous system function.

Bear in mind that muscle cramping for dehydration doesn't only happen to athletes. If you’re walking around on a hot summer day and start to feel muscle pain, it could be a sign that you’re not drinking enough water.

4. Fever and chills
If you feel flu-like symptoms such as dizziness and fever it could indicate moderate or serious dehydration. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke compounded by dehydration is known to cause fever and chills. You may be sweating profusely while your skin is cool to the touch.

The higher the fever the more dehydrated your body may become. Unless your body temperature decreases, the skin will lose its cool and become hot and dry to the touch. At this point, it’s important that you cool yourself down immediately and seek medical help, according to the CDC. A few ways to cool down are applying ice or wet cloth to your body and moving to a cool area. Of course, these are all short-term solutions until you can see a doctor.

5. Headaches

If you have an unyielding headache and you aren’t sure what the source is, dehydration may be at fault. As MedlinePlus points out, even mild dehydration can cause a headache which can either be tolerable or intense.

Dehydration can also trigger migraine episodes, for reasons that aren’t fully understood at the moment. Recent research suggested that dehydration can temporarily share brain tissue, which may be the trigger for the headache. In any case, drinking a full glass of water and continuing to sip on more fluids during the day can ease your pain if dehydration is indeed the culprit.

6. Craving sweets

Your liver needs sufficient amounts of water to function properly. When you’re dehydrated, it can be difficult for the liver to release glycogen (stored glucose) and other components of your energy stores, which can lead to food cravings, particularly for sweets.

It is possible for some people to crave salty snacks as well, but craving sweets is more common because the body is experiencing difficulty releasing glucose into the bloodstream to use as fuel. Experts also note that if you suddenly feel hungry soon after a meal, you probably need to drink water to help your liver function.

7. Constant fatigue
Surprising Signs of Dehydration To Watch Out For tired man
As we already established, staying hydrated helps your body deliver key nutrients to your cells, and keep your organs doing what they are supposed to. So naturally, hydration is crucial to maintain your energy throughout the day. Not getting enough water can make you feel constantly tired and as if you’re ‘dragging’. Moreover, hydration can have a direct impact on sleep quality, according to the Sleep Foundation. Of course, overdoing it isn't recommended either. Excess hydration can cause you to wake up at night to go to the bathroom, which can also lead to fatigue.

Am I dehydrated or is it something else?
All the symptoms we listed could indicate dehydration but could also be applied to other health conditions. So how can you tell if it’s dehydration or something else? Thirst isn’t a reliable indicator because by the time you feel thirsty you are already mildly dehydrated, according to Mayo Clinic. On the other hand, lack of thirst doesn’t necessarily mean you’re well hydrated. Here are two other ways to check whether your body is dehydrated:

The skin test. Use two fingers to pinch some skin on the back of your hand, and then let it go. If it doesn’t spring back to its normal position in a couple of seconds, you’re probably dehydrated.

Check your urine. This is probably the most well-known dehydration indicator. If you’re well-hydrated, your urine should be mostly clear. The darker it is, the more dehydrated you are.
