Take care of your spinal health to avoid life-long malaise

Over the years spinal health has emerged as one of the major concerns among millennials.

Our busy and mostly sedentary lifestyles attached with a digital-heavy exist have resulted in a large number of young professionals being afflicted with back pain.

Injuries, poor postures, obesity, heavy schoolbags and puberty are some of the reasons for poor spinal health. Therefore, back pain is a matter of concern and should not be neglected.

Apart from diminishing your quality of life, back pain also affects your work and social engagements and in extreme cases, even prevents in accomplishing simple, everyday tasks.

Like all other structures of the body, the disc in the spine ages and degenerates with time and inactivity.

Early treatment can solve the pain and the root cause of the problem within a short span of time providing complete recovery. Early diagnosis and proper treatment is recommended to avoid the risk of surgeries and to live a better life without back pain and spine problems.

An Orthopedic Surgeon said, "Continuous cell phone, laptop and desktop use can prove detrimental for your neck and spine health. Perpetual use of these devices influences our stance in unhealthy ways that contribute to neck upper back, and shoulder pain. Bad posture while sitting, standing, walking, or in a static position can lead to stiffness. Bad posture can also affect other parts of the spine, such as the middle and low back. Use any device at the eye level as much as possible. They should also be positioned so the screen is at eye level and you don’t have to look down or bend your head forward. Ensure that your screen is set up so that you have to look forward. Adopting principles of good ergonomics early in life can help you go a long way in preventing neck and back problems."

Over the years spinal health has emerged as one of the major concerns among millennial. Experts have been witnessing that a large number younger population has been facing spinal problems and initially they neglect their problem. They come for treatment when problems get complicated.

An Orthopaedic surgeon said, “Obviously, age-related degeneration cannot be reversed, but few daily exercises can help rejuvenate and enhance disc nourishment.

"Exercise frequently there are few easy and doable exercises that should become a part of your daily routine. Practice yoga like the snake, the downward dog and the child poses to alleviate pain and strengthen your back.”

“If you are a smoker, quit smoking. Smoking speeds up the development of osteoporosis and brittle bones with loss of fluid in the discs and resulting in its degeneration.

""Hydration enables in maintaining soft tissue elasticity and fluidity in joints. Apply Heat – Warm water baths, using a heated compressor lying briefly under a heat lamp relaxes your back muscles and stimulates blood flow.”  the Dr. added.

According to experts, dietary habits can also improve your spine health and prevent spine ageing, eat wholesome and better to incorporate these food groups in your daily meal like kale and broccoli, green leafy veggies and cucumber have proven to be excellent vegetable sources of Calcium and Vitamin K.

Eat as much variety of nuts and seeds as possible. Eggs and fatty fish like anchovies and salmon are a great source of Vitamin D. Pay heed to any Warning signs – Although back pain these days are more common than you think but recurrent pains should never be ignored. Left untreated, problems with the spine can worsen and result in a life-long malaise.

Difference between heart attack and cardiac arrest

“India is genetically more prone to cardiovascular diseases due to metabolic syndrome and now the burden is only rising because of increasing burden of diabetes, smoking and sedentary lifestyle,” said a cardiologist.

According to the 2016 Report, cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death in India, killing 1.7 million people in 2016.

Cardiovascular diseases involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to heart attack, also called as myocardial infarction, which can even cause sudden cardiac arrest. These diseases are now commonly being seen in younger age group. Around 25% of all heart attacks in Indians occur under 40 years of age, according to the cardiologists.

A cardiologist  said, “Most of the heart attacks go unrecognised and many times people are not aware of the difference between heart attack and cardiac arrest.”

When a patient suffers heart attack the oxygenated blood is unable to reach the heart which pumps it to the rest of the body whereas while suffering cardiac arrest, the heart of the patient stops functioning due to problem in the electrical system of the heart, disrupting the pumping action. The major connection between heart attack and cardiac arrest is that heart attack is one of the many factors that can lead to cardiac arrest.

According to a Dr., the main cause of cardiovascular diseases is faulty lifestyle. Adapting proper lifestyle like avoiding use of refined carbohydrates, smoking and following healthy diet with regular exercise are the prevention measures that people should adopt.

Stress and urban lifestyle are playing a huge role in the rising cardiovascular disease scenario. A Cardiologist said, “Today most of the people have sitting jobs; if you sit for 6-8 hours straight you hit your heart as badly as smoking does.”

Public awareness about CPR can save lives

Time is very crucial for patients suffering from a heart attack or cardiac arrest, only difference is of having a golden hour and having golden seconds to save a life.

When a person suffers cardiac arrest, one should immediately call for an ambulance, and simultaneously perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

“Making people aware about the importance of CPR through public education is the only tool that can help bring down the cardiac death in the country at large,” said a Dr.

Performing CPR involves hard pressing on the chest with hands, with the speed of 120 compressions per minute. This should be performed by the time medical help arrives. Any form of CPR is better than NO CPR.

Timely intervention is very important in saving life of the patient which can happen only through public education. Hence, CPR training should be encouraged and provided at all levels, concluded a Dr.

Aerobic Exercises May Delay The Onset Of Alzheimer’s Disease

According to a study published recently, cardiovascular exercise training may help reduce the decline in brain function often seen Alzheimer's patients. The team of researchers who assessed data from 19 studies conducted between 2002 and 2015 that examined the effects of exercise on cognitive ability in 1,145 people at risk with Alzheimer's disease. Most participants in the study were female and the average age was 77. Aerobic exercises included brisk walking, jogging, swimming, cycling and activities that boost the heart rate and strengthen the heart and lungs.

On an average, participants exercised 3.5 days per week at moderate intensity, with each session lasting for about 30 to 60 minutes. As per the results, exercises, specifically, cardiovascular exercise had a strong favourable impact. The researchers found that there was a significant increase in the cognitive functioning in the exercise group as compared to the non-exercise group.

The study also suggests that aerobic exercise may be more effective than other types of exercise when the goal is to preserve the cognitive health of older adults at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

Apart from exercise or physical activities, various foods can prevent or reduce the effects of Alzheimer's disease. Here are foods that you must include in your daily diet.

1. Turmeric
According to various studies, consuming turmeric on a regular basis can boost brain performance. Try using it in curries and snacks. You can also drink turmeric milk on a daily basis.
2. Berries
Berries are the new super-foods that help protect the brain from oxidative stress and may reduce effects of Alzheimer's disease.
3. Green leafy veggies
Green veggies are loaded with vitamin K and folic acid that help brain function better. They also help in keeping your memory sharp and reduce the chances of developing such conditions.
4. Omega-3 fatty acids
Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids are known to be good for brain function and also help in countering inflammation. Include more walnuts, flaxseeds and fish in your diet.

Simple urine test can tell how much our body has aged

Scientists have identified a promising new marker of ageing in urine that may help predict the risk of developing age-related diseases and even death. Researchers found that a substance indicating oxidative damage increases in urine as people get older. The study, also describes a way to easily measure the levels of this marker in human urine samples. The new marker potentially provides a method to measure how much our body has aged - our biological rather than chronological age, researchers said. This could help predict our risk of developing age-related disease, and even the likely time-frame for our death, they said. While everyone born in the same year has the same chronological age, the bodies of different people age at different rates. This means that, although the risk of many diseases increases with age, the link between our age in years and our health and lifespan is relatively loose. Many people enjoy long lives, relatively free of disease, while others suffer chronic illness and premature death. Some researchers consider normal ageing to be a disease, where our cells accumulate damage over time. The rate of this cellular damage can vary from person to person, and may be dictated by genetics, lifestyle and the environment we live in. This cellular damage may be a more accurate indication of our biological age than the number of years since we were born. We need to be able to measure biological age to know whether treatments to slow ageing - which may be possible in the future - are effective, researchers said. One mechanism thought to underlie biological ageing involves a molecule vital to our survival - oxygen - in what is called the free radical theory of ageing. "Oxygen by-products produced during normal metabolism can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules in cells, such as DNA and RNA," said a Dr. "As we age, we suffer increasing oxidative damage, and so the levels of oxidative markers increase in our body," the Dr. said. One such marker called 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanosine or 8-oxoGsn results from oxidation of a crucial molecule in our cells called RNA. The researchers measured 8-oxoGsn in urine samples from 1,228 Chinese residents aged 2-90 years old, using a rapid analysis technique called ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography. "We found an age-dependent increase in urinary 8-oxoGsn in participants 21 years old and older," said the Dr. "Therefore, urinary 8-oxoGsn is promising as a new marker of ageing," he said. Interestingly, levels of 8-oxoGsn were roughly the same between men and women, except in post-menopausal women, who showed higher levels. This may have been caused by the decrease in oestrogen levels that happens during menopause, as oestrogen is known to have anti-oxidant effects.
