3 do-it-yourself cold remedies

There’s no need to run to the drugstore for cold remedies

Go to a random drugstore and you’ll find a plethora of cold remedies that promise to get rid of that nasty cold in no-time. Sounds great, but these types of medicine aren’t cheap and half of the time they don’t even work that well. Have you ever looked at the active ingredients in cold remedies? You can easily make some yourself.

Look in your kitchen cupboard and fridge to make these do-it-yourself cold remedies.

Stuffed nose – Combine eucalyptus and peppermint

In our opinion, a stuffed nose is the most annoying thing about having a cold. Especially when we’re trying to sleep we have a hard time dealing with a stuffed nose. Luckily for us, there’s an easy solution to this problem. Simply sprinkle a few drops of eucalyptus and peppermint essential oil on a handkerchief and hold the kerchief up to your nose. Breathe in deeply to relieve your stuffed nose. Another option is to fill a bowl with boiling water and to add a few drops of eucalyptus and peppermint oil. Hold your head above the bowl and drape a towel over your head and the bowl so the steam won’t escape. Don’t go to close to the water, you don’t want to burn yourself.

Dry throat – Combine sage and honey

One of the symptoms of a common cold is a dry throat. Your throat could feel dry and scratchy and even hurt. Try to treat a dry throat by spooning a few tablespoons of honey in a saucepan and adding a few leaves of sage. Put the heat on low and heat mixture while stirring occasionally. Take the sage leaves out after a few minutes and put one or two tablespoons honey in your tea. The honey combined with sage will relieve your dry throat immediately.

Prevention – Elderberries and water

Are you afraid you’re catching a cold? Try making an elixir of elderberries. Put a saucepan with water on the stove and add elderberries. Bring the water to a boil and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. Then, remove the elderberries and boil the water down to reduce it to half its volume. Let it cool and consume two tablespoons to boost your immune system.

Best exerrcises to boost brain health

It’s well established that exercise can benefit your brain as well as your body.

However, not all exercise is equally effective.

Here are the 5 best exercises to boost brain health.

1) Walking-

Walking as little as 3 hours per week could protect against age-related memory loss.

Several studies have demonstrated walking can prevent brain shrinkage and encourage neuron growth, which can improve memory.

2) Light stretching and moderate aerobics-

Light stretching and moderate aerobics, like jogging or cycling may help fight depression.

Researchers found that 8 weeks of aerobics or light stretching reduced depressive symptoms by 55 % or 31 %, respectively.

However, researchers say the effects may not be as pronounced in people with lower levels of reward processing in the brain.

3) Cardio-respiratory exercise-

Getting your blood pumping by running, swimming or any other activity that raises your heart rate could slow cognitive decline.

Researchers in Germany found that heightened oxygen intake during cardio exercise may increase gray matter and total brain volume.

4) Strength training-

Light weights for 90 minutes per week can protect brain areas vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers found that 6 months of strength training can protect against brain degradation.

5) Moderate to high-intensity exercise-

More intense exercise, like fast cycling, running or playing active sports like soccer, can immediately boost brain function.

Scientists found that moderate to high-intensity exercise improved young adults’ memory, concentration, and ability to learn for the following two hours.

Researchers also found lasting effects from a single workout, which they tell could “ reprogram” the brain to burn more energy,

A long-term exercise habit will have the most benefits for your body and your brain, but even occasional or light activity can help.

If you’re out to boost your brain along with your muscles, keep these exercises in mind, the next time you hit the gym.
