8 Herbal Teas Capable Of Relieving Bloating

2. Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

This plant can be easily mistaken for mint, as it belongs to the mint family, but it is slightly different, as it has a slight lemon taste and scent and flavor. The European Medicines Agency recognizes the potency of this plant to relieve gas and bloating, as well as other mild digestive problems. 
 
This coincides with the traditional use of the plant, valued for its capacity to treat a variety of digestive symptoms. Much like mint, lemon balm tea usually contains the leaves of the plant, usually sold in dried form. The preparation is identical to that of chamomile tea. 
 
3. Gentian Root (Gentiana lutea)

It is known that gentian root contains bitter plant compounds, such as iridoids and flavonoids. Apart from their antioxidant potential, these compounds stimulate digestion, which can also help relieve bloating. 
 
In terms of taste, pure gentian tea is rather bitter, which is why it is usually sold or mixed with other herbs, such as chamomile, as well as honey. Preparation: Add ¼ - ½ teaspoon (1-2 grams) of dried gentian root powder to a cup of hot water and steep it for 10 minutes.

A 2015 study reported that only 1 gram of dried wormwood powder is capable at preventing or relieving indigestion by causing the release of digestive juices. So, similarly to gentian root, the bitters in wormwood may aid bloating, too. 
 
Another study also suggested that wormwood may contain antiparasitic properties, which can also be the cause behind bloating. Keep in mind, that you should avoid wormwood during pregnancy, as a compound in wormwood called thujone may generate uterine contractions.

In terms of preparation, bitter wormwood tea is best complemented by lemon and honey. Only 1 teaspoon (1.5 grams) of the dried herb will suffice to prepare a cup of tea, and it is only necessary to brew it for 5 minutes in hot water.

5. Angelica Root (Angelica archangelica)

This plant is closely-related to celery and has been used in Chinese medicine for a long time, but there it is known under the name of dong quai. In traditional Austrian medicine, the roots of the plant are used to treat a variety of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. 
 
Research confirms some of these uses, as it has been suggested that it can relieve constipation and bloating. The use of the root during pregnancy is under question. The root is usually sold dried or powdered, and it has a bitter taste. 
 
Brew around 1 teaspoon of the root in a cup of water for 5 minutes to prepare the tea.
 
6. Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)
Fennel is a very popular ingredient in cuisine, with both the seeds and the roots of the plant being used up for different purposes. The plant is very aromatic and has a pleasant flavor and taste. Traditionally, fennel seeds are used to combat abdominal pain, constipation, bloating and gas. 
 
A study conducted on elderly patients showed that individuals suffering from chronic constipation who drank a serving of herbal tea with fennel daily had 4 more bowel movements than the control group in just a 28-days. Constipation is one of the leading causes of bloating, and improving this condition will usually also make bloating go away. 
 
Another study showed that fennel can prevent ulcers, which is another risk factor of chronic bloating. 
 
Apart from their medicinal value, fennel tea is quite pleasant to the taste, with many comparing its sweet aromatic taste to licorice.
 
To prepare the tea, use 1-2 teaspoons of crushed fennel seeds and steep them for 10-15 minutes in a cup of hot water. 
 
7. Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Studies support the use of ginger, too, with one study showing that it can relieve nausea, and another one suggesting that ginger supplements aid digestion, reduce intestinal pain and cramping, relieve bloating and gas. This miracle worker has a pleasant warming flavor and it can either be brewed alone, or combined with lemon, honey and other herbs. 
 
If you’re using dried ginger, only ¼ - ½ teaspoon will suffice to prepare a cup of ginger tea. Steep the hot water and ginger mixture for 5 minutes. If you’re working with fresh ginger, around 1 tablespoon of the finely-sliced root will be enough to make 1 cup of ginger tea, but keep in mind that fresh ginger takes longer to brew, around 10 minutes. 
 
8. Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

Peppermint is capable to relax spasms in the gut, which can relieve bloating and abdominal pain. It also contains flavonoids, which can reduce bloating. To make peppermint tea, you can use the prepackaged variety. Alternatively, use 1 tablespoon of dried peppermint leaves or 3 tablespoons of fresh leaves to make a cup of tea. Let the tea steep in hot water for 10 minutes before drinking.

One Chinese study found that men who drank more than three cups of green tea per day reduced their risk of prostate cancer by 70%. In another study funded by the National Institute of Health, 79 men with prostate cancer were told to either drink six cups of green tea a day or six cups of water. After 3-8 weeks, the levels of prostate-specific antigen, a protein that may indicate cancer, were lower in the men who drank green tea than those who drank water.

2. Makes Your Heart Healthier 
Green tea contains a significant amount of antioxidants and flavonoids that help protect against heart disease by slowing the breakdown of LDL cholesterol, improving blood vessel function, and preventing blood clots. 
 
The benefits of green tea also include lower rates of artery blockages. For example, those who drink a cup or two a day have a 46% lower chance of developing narrowed arteries. Increasing that to three cups a day lowers the risk of having a heart attack by 43% and dying from a heart attack by 70%. 
 
Green tea can even help prevent a second heart attack. In a study of 1,900 patients recovering from heart attacks at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, the death rate among patients who drank at least two cups of green tea per day was 44% lower than among non-tea drinkers.

The tea-drinking mice were far less likely to develop arthritis than mice that drank only water.
 
According to the Iowa Women’s Health Study, women who drink more than three cups of tea a day are 60% less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than those who don’t drink green tea.

Researchers from the Netherlands confirmed in a recent study that two green tea compounds, L-theanine and caffeine, can significantly increase levels of alertness and attention, building on what is already known about the brain benefits of green tea.

In a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers discovered that drinking just one cup of green tea per day made people over the age of 55, 38% less likely to experience a decline in cognitive abilities.

The researchers couldn’t identify any particular component of green tea that might be soothing, but animal studies suggest that one compound, EGCC, has both sedative and hypnotic effects that turn down the body’s production of stress chemicals.

There are many methods that help with weight loss. Some are more arduous than others, but I doubt there is a simpler and more effective way than drinking fennel seed water throughout the day. This golden drink, which you can easily make at home, has such a refreshing, clean scent you'll feel it working even before you sip it. It has a taste that reminds one of licorice, and it also freshens the breath.

I highly recommend knowing about this drink and the simple ways of making it, so you too can sip it every day and enjoy its slimming properties. I started drinking fennel seed water a few months ago, and I can definitely attest to a change in my life. A few tips: It is recommended to use filtered water, the cleanest you can drink. To add aroma to the beverage, you can roast the fennel seeds in a pan until they release their sweet scent (about 20 seconds). It's recommended one starts with a small amount (about half what appears in the recipes). If you like the drink and feel like you've finally found your method for losing weight, continue drinking it every day.

Method #1: Cooking the fennel seed water 
 
Ingredients: 
• 1 liter water 
• 2 tablespoons fennel seeds 
• Glass jar 
 
 Instructions: 
 
• Bring the liter of water to a boil in a pot - you can also pour boiling water straight from the kettle. When the water begins to boil, throw the fennel seeds into them and immediately put out the heat. Cover the pot with a lid and let the water cool to room temperature. 
 
• When the water has fully cooled, your fennel seed water is ready. All you have to do is transfer it to a jar that can be sealed tight, and drink it throughout the day. You can make a bigger batch and store it in the fridge if you don't have the time to make a new batch each day. Just double or triple the ingredients. 
 
Method #2: 
Personally, I prefer the following method because it's easier to make, and when I wake up in the morning I can just take it with me as I leave the house. It doesn't use heat, either, and so there's no risk of harming the quality of the fennel seeds. 
 
Ingredients: 
• 1 liter water 
• 2 tablespoons fennel seeds 
• Glass jar
 
​ Instructions: 
• All you need to do is take a glass jar, put 2 tablespoons of fennel seeds in it and fill it up with a liter of water, similar to the first recipe. 
• Close the lid of the jar and let it sit for the night. In the beginning you'll see the seeds float, but by morning they will have sunk to the bottom.

How much fennel seed water should I drink throughout the day? 
Although this drink helps with weight loss, drinking more of it will not make the process any quicker. Like everything else in life, this drink should be drunk in moderation. Follow the instructions in the recipe and make a daily batch with 1 liter of water, sipping it throughout the day.
