Causes Of Dandruff

Dandruff isn't just a social embarrassment, but may also give you certain pointers about your general hair health as well. Let's look at some facts regarding dandruff and how it may affect the health of your hair. Causes of dandruff
The cause for dandruff is usually stated to be a dry scalp, which is not entirely true. Dandruff could be caused by a host of reasons and rather than being a problem, it could be a symptom of other problems with hair health. Let's look at some of the causes:
1. Yeast problems on your scalp: If you suffer from extreme dandruff problems during the winter months, it is likely that it is due to the buildup of yeast on your head. Yeast may build up during the winter months and it usually gets resolved when temperatures rise during the summer months.
2. Not maintaining your hair regularly: This may come as a surprising element as brushing helps in removing dandruff from your scalp. If you have short hair and don't brush your hair regularly, chances of getting dandruff increase more so. Shampooing also has a similar effect and thus if you don't keep your hair clean, it might end up causing more dandruff.
3. Conditions such as Seborrheic dermatitis or other diseases: Dandruff may well be a manifestation of symptoms for other health problems within your body. For example, Seborrheic dermatitis is a condition which may cause your scalp to be irritated and oily and in turn, cause more dandruff. It could also mean you have a Malassezia problem. Malassezia is a fungus that naturally lives in our hair and feeds on the oil, but an overgrowth of these might result in dandruff as well.
4. Lifestyle issues such as diet and stress: If you follow a poor diet, mostly consisting of junk and fried foods, and also have a lot of stress, then it may lead to dandruff. In such cases, topical medications or treatments might not work. You will need to correct it by making changes in your lifestyle, one of them following a healthy diet
In all of these cases, it is not just a specific problem, but a symptom of a larger problem that needs to be resolved. Treating the underlying problems will ensure that dandruff goes away too.

Eating Unpeeled Cucumber Is Beneficial

From hunger pangs to skin care, cucumber has always been beneficial. While most of the people consider it a healthy practice to have the cucumber peeled before eating, the truth is just the opposite. The health benefits of unpeeled cucumber are beyond imagination. Unfortunately, not many people are aware of this.
In this article, we will discuss the health benefits associated with unpeeled cucumber.
  1. Keep constipation and related problems at bay:
    If constipation has been giving you sleepless night, worry no more! The answer to all your problems lies in unpeeled cucumber. The cucumber peel is laden with insoluble fiber that goes a long way to improve the conditions of constipation and associated discomfort. For those with hardened stool, the inner part of the cucumber comes as a great relief. A rich source of soluble fiber, it works towards softening the stool. All in all, the unpeeled cucumber aids in preventing digestive and bowel related problems.
  2. An unpeeled cucumber a day keeps the ophthalmologist away: Not known to many, but the cucumber peel is an excellent source of Vitamin A (beta-carotene). For a healthy vision and eyesight, Vitamin A is important. When you peel the cucumber, the beta- carotene goes straight down the drain, a mistake that can cost you dearly.
  3. Get rid of the stubborn and unwanted fats: For those into dieting, hunger pangs and food cravings are inevitable. You feel like munching something at every short time interval without affecting the calorie content. An unpeeled cucumber is extremely low in calories (each slice containing ~ 1-2 g of calories). The next time, the hunger pangs come to haunt you, a slice or two of unpeeled cucumber is what you should munch on.
  4. Slows down the signs of skin aging: Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) comes as a blessing for the skin. It plays a pivotal role in reducing and slowing down the signs of skin aging by protecting the skin from the harmful oxidative damage. It also acts as a catalyst, accelerating the collagen production. The unpeeled cucumber, rather the cucumber peels are a rich source of ascorbic acid, peeling which you rob the skin of an essential vitamin.
  5. Source of important vitamins: The unpeeled cucumber is also an important source of vitamin K or blood clotting factor. The health benefits of vitamin K are not new. In addition to regulating the clotting of blood during an injury, Vitamin K is also involved in the mineralization of the bone (thereby reducing bone loss and associated problems). It also ensures the healthy functioning of the brain and may be instrumental in avoiding certain types of cancer.
  6. Source of Minerals: The cucumber peels are also laden with magnesium, a mineral known for its benefits. From fighting insomnia and migraine related headaches to relieving muscle spasms, improving the digestion to soothing the nerves, magnesium does these all and a lot more.
Remember to eat a cucumber unpeeled to get the maximum health benefits from it.

Fibre rich foods, a must in our diet

Fibre is crucial for proper digestion and 85 % immunity of the human body is due to digestion alone. Scientists have recently concluded after years of study that the human brain and gut are indeed connected. This leads us to the question whether we are looking after our guts to stay healthy and fit for years to come?
Consider this modern diets have left millions worldwide with deficiency of fibre. And, this is really alarming because high - fibre foods help to guard against cancer, heart disease, kidney stones, PMS, obesity and diabetes.

Fibre comes in two varieties- soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibre turns to gel in the stomach, slowing digestion, which helps lower cholesterol and blood sugar. Insoluble fibre remains untouched all the way to the large intestine aiding in proper evacuation of the GI tract. Since fibre is never absorbed into the body, you have to eat sufficient quantities of it every day. Experts suggest that you need 25-38 gm of fibre each day in your diet.

1.Legumes like split peas or ‘dals’: Fibre content - 16.3 gm per cup. Eaten as a staple food in India, split peas are full of proteins and fibre. They can be had in soup, stew and dal form.

6.Brussels sprouts: Fibre - 4.1 gm per cup. Contains  balance of soluble and insoluble fibre apart from nutrients like vitamins C, K, B1, B2, B6, folate and manganese.

7.Oatmeal: Fibre 4 gm per cup. Great for breakfast with milk, fruits and nuts.

8.Flax seeds: Fibre - 3 gm per tablespoon: Tonnes of nutrients are packed in the humble flax seeds. They contain protein, thiamine, manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, Omega-3 fatty acids and fibre. They reduce cholesterol and help ease symptoms of menopause.

9.Avocados: Fibre 6.7 gm per half fruit raw. Pack with the goodness of vitamin C, E, B6, folate, vitamin K and potassium. Contain healthy fats that help to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease.

10.Pears: Fibre - 5.5 gm per medium fruit. This fruit contains Omega-6 fatty acids which helps keep the cells in brain and nerves healthy.

11.Dark green leafy vegetables, beans, fruits all contain plenty of fibre. It is always good to eat a whole fruit than drink fruit juice, as it not only helps to get fibre, but also gives a feeling of satiety, when we eat a fruit.

Depression - Can It Be A Sign Of Vitamin D3 Deficiency?

Vitamins are extremely important for proper functioning of various body systems. Vitamin D3 plays a very crucial role in the proper functioning of bones and joints.  Deficiency of this vitamin is quite common, but can be identified and managed easily.  Read on to know more about its functions, causes of deficiency, symptoms, and management.
Function: Vitamin D3 is essential for the absorption of calcium from the food that is consumed. A decrease in the amount of vitamin D3 leads to poor calcium absorption, resulting in thin, soft, brittle bones.
Causes: Some of the possible causes of vitamin D3 deficiency (and ways to manage them) are listed below:
  1. Reduced intake: People with a strict vegan diet may be consuming reduced amounts of this important chemical.  Most natural food sources are animal based including fish, fish oils, fortified milk, egg yolks and beef liver.
  2. Limited sun exposure: People who spend a lot of time indoors are likely to have this deficiency.  People who wear sunscreen constantly, wear long robes for religious reasons, live in the polar areas, upper/lower hemispheres are all prone to vitamin D3 deficiency.
  3. Darker complexion: The body’s ability to make vitamin D3 when exposed to the sun is reduced if there is more melanin in the skin.
  4. Obesity:  Vitamin D is extracted from the blood by fat cells and people with BMI of more than 30 have a vitamin deficiency.
Symptoms:  While some people may go completely asymptomatic with this condition, others could develop significant symptoms.

  1. Bone pain and aches: When there is less calcium getting incorporated into the bones, pains and aches leading to fatigue are common.
  2. Depression: The areas of the brain that regulate mood contain vitamin D receptors, and low levels of this vitamin can lead to depression.  They are also at higher risk of developing cognitive conditions like schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, and dementia.
  3. Gut problems: Vitamin D is fat soluble and in people with stomach conditions like Crohn’s or IBD, the gut functioning is altered and so vitamin D absorption is reduced.
  4. Increased risk of heart disease:  Both the risk of developing heart disease and the severity of the disease went up considerably when there is vitamin D deficiency. This is given their role in controlling inflammation and improving immune function.
  5. Lesser chances of surviving cancer:  In patients with colorectal cancer, lymphoma, and breast cancer, increasing vitamin D levels improved cancer prognosis by 4%.  The chances of developing prostate cancer are also increased in patients with vitamin D3 deficiency.
Management: Providing the required amounts of vitamin D3 through diet and supplements is the best way to manage this.

Benefits of Pink Himalayan Salt

Salt is an ingredient many of us can't do without when it comes to cooking, and rightly so: food without salt can sometimes be tasteless. Although salt is also essential to our health, we all know that in excess it can bring about serious health conditions and diseases. Thankfully,  there's a healthy alternative to regular table salt that we highly recommend you try, and this is Pink Himalayan salt.

What is Pink Himalayan Salt?
 Pink Himalayan salt, also known as 'white gold', is a rock salt that is naturally found in a non-polluted area deep within the Himalayas. It is known for its striking properties, as it contains 84 natural elements and minerals that are indispensable to our health. These include magnesium, potassium, calcium, chloride, phosphorus and iron. It also contains zinc, selenium, iodine and copper, and has traces of iron oxide (rust), which gives it its pink tinge.

Unlike regular table salt, Himalayan salt is completely natural, and contains no added chemicals or additives. For this reason, it is considered to be a healthy salt. It is commonly sold as coarse grains, or even as large blocks, although finely grained versions are available.
What are the health benefits?
Consuming Pink Himalayan salt brings a multitude of surprising health benefits to our body. Here are some:

•    It controls the levels of water within the body;
•    It regulates blood pressure;
•    It balances the body's pH;
•    It helps with blood sugar regulation;
•    It aids absorption of nutrients in the intestinal tract while supplying the body with sufficient energy;
•    It promotes vascular health, bone strength and respiratory function;
•    It prevents muscle cramps;
•    It nurtures the kidneys and gall bladder;
•    It regulates healthy sleeping patterns;
•    It wards off signs of aging;
•    It supports your libido.

Having said this, it is still very important to watch your salt intake. Just like other salts, Pink Himalayan salt may contain some traces of aluminum, lead and toxic metals, so make sure you always maintain a balance.

Why should I prefer it to table salt?
Table salt is a highly processed type of salt, which can act as an 'invader' to the human body when it is turned into sodium chloride. It is widely known that this is the main cause of high blood pressure and water retention, and it can also bring about tissue irritation. Because it affects the balance of fluids in our body considerably, it causes the body to waste a great deal of energy in order to bring it back to normal.

In fact, for every gram of sodium chloride that is ingested, our body uses about 20 times the amount of cellular water in order to neutralize it. As a result, this can lead to health conditions such as rheumatism, arthritis, cellulite, and kidney and gall bladder stones. For these reasons, Himalayan salt is very often the healthier option. This type of salt is natural and hence easier on the body when it comes to metabolism and energy usage. Apart from this, it is found to have positive effects on the nervous system and is an excellent source of energy for our bodies.
How much Pink Himalayan salt should I consume?
Sodium is found in every type of salt, and this is why we should be careful not to consume more than we should, even when it comes to Himalayan salt. Excess intake of any salt can lead to water retention, high blood pressure and heart disease, and while the risk is less for Himalayan salt, it still doesn't exclude the fact that you should be cautious.

Consider the facts: According to the American Heart Association, we shouldn't consume more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium daily. In reality, the body can function on just 500 milligrams a day, but an average American consumes a shocking 5,000 milligrams - far exceeding the limit. The ideal amount of Himalayan salt would be a quarter-teaspoon, which contains 500 milligrams of sodium. This allows one to use it a little more freely than regular table salt.
Another way of using it: Himalayan Salt Lamp
There's another great way Himalayan salt can be used, besides consuming it. People have found that lighting up a block of this salt, to form a so-called Himalayan Salt Lamp, can transform a room both chemically and physically.
