20 Uses Of Hydrogen Peroxide You Didn’t Know About

If you don’t have a bottle of hydrogen peroxide at home, you don’t know what you’re missing out on. This humble solution that’s two parts hydrogen and two parts oxygen is practically a genie in a bottle with a plethora of uses and benefits. Hydrogen peroxide benefits are easy to reap and the solution is easily available. Did you know you can use it on your skin, as a mouthwash, an antibacterial, an antiviral and an anti-acne agent? We bet you also didn’t know that hydrogen peroxide is already in your body. Yes! Your white blood cells produce it, which enhances your natural immunity. But that’s not the only hydrogen peroxide health benefit that exists. There’s a lot more to what you thought was just a regular household cleaner and home-use bleach.

Hydrogen peroxide has been a recognized medicinal source since the 1800s. Though it has gone through its fair share of infamy and disrepute, it is still widely used for many purposes. It may seem to lie in a sort of limbo, so far as established medicine is concerned, but there is also a significant body of research highlighting and enumerating its several therapeutic benefits.

Available in a variety of forms and strengths, the most common use hydrogen peroxide solution has a strength of 3 percent. You can get it at pharmacies, groceries, and general stores.

The use of food grade hydrogen peroxide of 35 percent strength is a little controversial as the scientific community has noted benefits and ill-effects alike. Though used in the food industry to preserve and store food, the USFDA warns against drinking high-strength hydrogen peroxide for medicinal purposes.

Uses Of Hydrogen Peroxide

But that’s not to say hydrogen peroxide is not useful. Here are 20 great uses and benefits of hydrogen peroxide:

1. Freshens Your Veggies

You can prolong the life and freshness of all your veggies with hydrogen peroxide. To a sink full of cold water, add one-fourth cup of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Light-skinned vegetables like lettuce should be soaked for 20 minutes, while thicker skinned ones like cucumbers can stand for 30 minutes. Drain, dry and refrigerate.

2. Disinfects Your Kitchen Counter

Always keep a spray bottle of H2O2 (3 percent) solution in the kitchen. You can wipe off countertops and appliances with it. It will not only disinfect the kitchen but also give it a fresh smell. Use it to clean your refrigerator as well.

3. Sparkle Up Your Whites

Instead of using fabric bleach, soak your dingy or yellowed white clothes in water along with a cup of hydrogen peroxide to renew them.

4. Cleans Contact Lenses

Hydrogen peroxide is a cheap alternative to lens cleaning solution. It is the active ingredient in most lens cleaning solutions anyway.

5. Maintains Skin’s pH Balance

After a shower, spray or mist your body with a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide spray. This maintains your pH balance and replaces your skin’s acid mantle which is destroyed by soaps.

6. Detoxifies And Revives Your Body

Soak yourself in a bathtub with a maximum of two cups of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide for about half an hour or more. This is going to detox and rejuvenate your body.

7. Reduces Plaque And Gingivitis

It’s no news that hydrogen peroxide features regularly in most toothpastes. Studies have shown that prolonged use of hydrogen peroxide with a strength higher than 1 percent decreases plaque and gingivitis indices.

8. Fights Cavities

When combined with blue light (frequently used by dentists during bleaching), hydrogen peroxide can manage to reach and treat bacteria settled in deep layers of biofilms on our teeth. These sneaky bacteria are responsible for causing cavities and gingivitis.

9. Brightens Your Pearly Whites

Hydrogen peroxide gels are often used for tooth whitening.

10. Freshens Your Mouth

Use equal parts water and 3% H2O2 as a mouth wash to get rid of bacteria and germs. It also relieves minor irritations of the mouth like canker sores and swollen gums. It also takes care of bad breath. Just don’t swallow it.

11. Removes Stain From Your Teeth

Peroxides, hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, are the active ingredients in most tooth-whitening products. Mix hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to make your very own stain-removing toothpaste. This is particularly effective if you are a coffee addict or smoker or indulge in other foods that leave stains on your teeth.

12. Fixes Athlete’s Foot

If you suffer from athlete’s foot, soak your feet every night in a 3 percent solution of hydrogen peroxide until you see improvement.

13. Whitens Your Nails

Has repeated use of dark nail colors left your nails with a dingy, yellow film? Get rid of it by soaking them in hydrogen peroxide.

14. Cleans Up Lungs

What if we tell you that this liquid has the capability to clean up your lungs? Intravenous hydrogen peroxide therapy has been successfully used on patients suffering from lung disorders like emphysema, asthma, and chronic lung disease. Overseen by a doctor, the treatment involves a hydrogen peroxide drip that enters your body intravenously. Every session burns the soot and debris in your lungs and lifts it off the surface of the air sacks. This is released through coughing over a few days and you can breathe easier after that. Do not try this at home!

15. Aids Immune System

Using the zebrafish as an animal model, scientists have demonstrated that the body uses hydrogen peroxide to alert the immune system when a tissue has been injured. Hydrogen peroxide is the stuff in your body that’s responsible for informing and directing white blood cells to come to the aid of the wounded site.

16. Works As An Antiseptic

Because of its ability to create a foamy effervescence on the site of injury, hydrogen peroxide is able to reach the tiniest crevices of wounds, cuts, and scrapes, cleaning the area immediately.

17. Cleans Your Ears

A common home remedy for a buildup of earwax is to pour a small amount (a capful of the bottle should do) into your ears while lying on one side. You will experience some buzzing and popping sounds. Stay put for 15-20 minutes and drain the hydrogen peroxide into a towel by tilting your head. You will probably notice small pieces of ear wax on the towel.

18. Clears Up Acne

The 3 percent solution not only clears up your acne but also helps get rid of acne scars. It may sting a little the first few times but you’ll start seeing results soon.

19. Bleaches Your Hair

Ran out of hair color? Just reach out for that bottle of peroxide, some cotton balls and a hair coloring brush to streak your hair. Let it stay for 30 minutes and wash off. However, don’t make it your go-to hair color as long-term use can damage your tresses.

20. Softens Corns And Calluses

Dip your feet in a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide to soften and eventually get rid of corns and calluses.

Peanuts are good for heart, brain, hair and skin !

Don’t overlook or underrate the power of peanuts as a nutty super food, say experts.

Nutritionist and weight management consultant Kavita Devgan, author of Don’t Diet! 50 Habits of Thin People, says ‘good’ fats are essential for good health. Devgan says: “Nut butters, particularly peanut butter, is a source of unsaturated fats, which are proven to be good for our heart and general health. Plus, it is a good source of fibre and protein too. And both provide satiety, so keep you full for longer.”

“It also delivers the antioxidant vitamin E, magnesium and some hard to find zinc. Of course moderation is the key as it tends to be steep in calories and sodium,” she said.

But beware. Pick your peanut butter with care and don’t over eat. Too much of even a good thing is bad.

“Look for peanut butter that is low on sodium and added sugars, and stick to two tablespoon per day,” Devgan said, suggesting that it’s best consumed with crackers, or paired with a fruit like apple or maybe baby carrots.

“When added to a sandwich, it provides the much needed protein and good fats, along with the carbs of the bread making the meal complete.”

Peanuts alone are packed with monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) that help lower the bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol level in the blood. It is also rich in vitamins E and biotin, which are known to be great for hair and skin health.

A nutritionist by education, he recommends regular consumption of peanuts or peanut butter that has over 90% peanut content. Just two tablespoons a day give you nutrition with taste, Mirza says, sharing some facts about health benefits of peanuts:

* A protein power bank: Peanuts are a rich source of good protein. 30 gm of peanuts give you around 8 gm of protein which is more than any other food. It also has fibre, healthy fats, antioxidants, potassium, magnesium and a lot more that provides you with energy.

* A source of healthy fat: Your body needs a good supply of healthy fats to stay fit. The fat in peanuts is heart-healthy monounsaturated. Therefore, like many other superfoods, peanuts are friendly fat food.

* Antioxidants in abundance: Peanuts also deliver oleic acid. It helps you cut cholesterol in the body, fight free radicals and inflammation. It is great for skin too.

* Good for the heart: Raw peanuts are a good source of monounsaturated fats. According to a scientific study at Purdue University in the US, consumption of peanuts reduces cardiovascular disease risk factors. The Adventist Health Study on peanuts also found that it is likely to reduce the risk of heart diseases.

* Brain food: Peanuts are high in niacin, resveratrol and vitamin E, which are influential in protecting against Alzheimer’s and age-related cognitive decline.

* Helps in weight loss: The protein and fibre content of peanuts makes you feel full for longer. This means, you are less likely to crave for food and over eat.

Eating legumes may help those suffering from diabetes

Eating over three servings of legumes like lentils, chickpeas, beans and peas every week may significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a new study has found.

Legumes are a food group rich in B vitamins, contain different beneficial minerals (calcium, potassium and magnesium) and sizeable amounts of fibre and are regarded as a low-glycemic index food, which means that blood glucose levels increase only slowly after consumption.

Due to these unique nutritional qualities, eating legumes regularly can help improve human health.

In fact, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAO) declared 2016 as the international year of legumes to raise people's awareness of their nutritional benefits.

Although legumes have long been thought to offer protection against type 2 diabetes (which is a significant health problem worldwide affecting more than 400 million adults in 2015), to date there has been little research to confirm this association.

To increase the general level of knowledge in this area, researchers from Rovira i Virgili University in Spain evaluated the association between the consumption of the different sub-types of non-soy legumes and the risk of type 2 diabetes among individuals at high cardiovascular risk.

They also evaluated the effect of replacing other protein- and carbohydrate-rich foods with legumes on the development of the disease.

Researchers analysed 3,349 participants at high risk of cardiovascular disease but without type 2 diabetes at the beginning of the study.

After 4 years of follow-up, the results showed that compared to individuals with a lower consumption of total legumes (12.73 grammes per day, about 1.5 servings per week of 60 grammes of raw legumes), individuals with a higher consumption (28.75 grammes per day, equivalent to 3.35 servings per week) had a 35 per cent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Of the different subtypes of legume, lentils in particular were associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

Those participants who had a higher consumption of lentils during the follow-up (nearly one serving/week) compare to those individuals with a lower consumption (less than half a serving per week), had a 33 per cent lower risk of developing the disease.

The researchers also found that the effect of replacing half a serving per day of foods rich in protein or carbohydrates, including eggs, bread, rice and baked potato, for half a serving per day of legumes was also associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes incidence.

THIS Type of HONEY is Killing Every Kind of Bacteria Scientists Throw At It

While raw, unprocessed honey is well-known for its health benefits, scientists have recently found that there is a type of honey which has the ability to kill every kind of bacteria scientists could throw at it, especially some of the worst bacteria known so far.

The results of this study were published in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, and could be of utmost importance at a time when many of the antibiotics are resistant against bacteria, especially against “superbugs.”

We are talking about the manuka honey, also known as jelly bush honey, which is produced in New Zealand. It has become all the rage over the past few years which led to shortages and selling of fake products. Therefore, New Zealand manuka producers demanded trademark protection, similar to Scottish whiskey or French champagne.  After this, the fact that the health benefits of this honey were kept as a secret doesn’t come as a surprise.

Manuka Honey Kills MRSA, Other Superbugs

Manuka honey is created by bees foraging on the nectar of Leptospermum Scoparium, the New Zealand manuka bush, as well as tea trees native only to Australia and New Zealand.

According to a report by The Australian, manuka honey killed every bacteria or pathogen it was tested on in the studies mentioned above. It can be either taken internally or applied topically to help fight infections on the skin, insect bites, and cuts.
The best part regarding manuka honey is that none of the superbugs it killed were able to build up immunity, which is a common problem with most of today`s antibiotics.

“New antibiotics tend to have short shelf lives, as the bacteria they attack quickly become resistant,” said Dr. Dee Carter of the University of Sydney’s School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences. “Many large pharmaceutical companies have abandoned antibiotic production because of the difficulty of recovering costs. Developing effective alternatives could, therefore, save many lives.”

Dr. Certer stated that what makes manuka honey effective at destroying the bacteria is a compound called methylglyoxal, which combines other unknown compounds to cause “multi-system failure.”

Where to Find Manuka Honey

Manuka honey is available in health stores and online, even though the supply levels have decreased which led to fake honey being sold. Therefore, when buying manuka honey, make sure you get one that is UMF certified.  UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor, which is a phytochemical property obtained from the manuka bushes.

Tooth loss, gum disease may increase death risk in post-menopausal women

A new study has found that post-menopausal women who suffer from gum disease and tooth loss may increase the risk of death.

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the gum and connective tissue surrounding the teeth which leads to loss of one's teeth, known as edentulism.

According to study, the women with a history of periodontal disease had with a 12 per cent higher risk of death from any cause.

For the findings, the team analysed 57,001 women, 55 years and older.

Loss of all natural teeth was associated with a 17 per cent higher risk of death from any cause in postmenopausal women.

Michael J. LaMonte, associate professor at the University at Buffalo, US said, "Our findings suggest that older women may be at higher risk for death because of their periodontal condition and may benefit from more intensive oral screening measures".

LaMonte added, "Besides their negative impact on oral function and dietary habits, these conditions are also thought to be related to chronic diseases of ageing".

The study was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
