New eye test may detect early signs of glaucoma

Researchers have developed a simple eye test that could help solve the biggest global cause of irreversible blindness, glaucoma, by detecting the onset of the disease at a very early stage.

Loss of sight in patients with glaucoma is caused by the death of cells in the retina at the back of the eye. This cell death is called apoptosis.

The new technique called DARC stands for detection of apoptosing retinal cells.

It uses a specially developed fluorescent marker which attaches to cell proteins when injected into patients. Sick cells appear as white fluorescent spots during eye examination.

In clinical trials, the pioneering diagnostic — developed by researchers at the University College London (UCL) and the Western Eye Hospital in England — allowed doctors to see individual nerve cell death in the back of the eye.

“Detecting glaucoma early is vital as symptoms are not always obvious. Although detection has been improving, most patients have lost a third of vision by the time they are diagnosed,” said led researcher Professor Francesca Cordeiro of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.

“Now, for the first time, we have been able to show individual cell death and detect the earliest signs of glaucoma. While we cannot cure the disease, our test means treatment can start before symptoms begin.”

Glaucoma affects an estimated 60 million people in the world, with one in 10 suffering total sight loss in both the eyes.

Initial clinical trials were carried out on a small number of glaucoma patients and compared with tests on healthy people. The initial clinical trials established the safety of the test for patients, according to a study published in the journal BRAIN.

The researchers believe the test has potential for early diagnosis of other degenerative neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis.

“In the future, the test could also be used to diagnose other neuro-degenerative diseases,” Cordeiro said.

Sugar Can do a lot more than just sweeten your desserts

1) Calming babies- babies that are administered a solution consisting of 1 part sugar and 4 parts water react more calmly towards being vaccinated than those that are not.

2) Treating wounds- sugar can be poured onto a wound in order to kill all the bacteria in that area and even relieve chronic pain.

3) Treating a burnt tongue- if you've scalded your mouth, put a little sugar on the affected area to alleviate the associated discomfort and pain.

4) Cleaning dirty hands- when your hands are very dirty with paint or grease, you can use sugar to remove the hard stains. Add sugar to soap foam and give your hands a good rub.

5) Nourishing the lips- mix a little jojoba and olive oil with a little powdered sugar and mint extract. This creates a natural moisturizing cream that's great for nourishing dry lips.

6) Nourishing the roots of your flowers- to give a better look to your flowers, you can use 3 teaspoons of sugar to 2 tablespoons of white vinegar for each litre of water you give the plants.

7) Cleaning grass stains- make a mixture of hot water and sugar and smear on clothes with grass stains. Allow it to soak into the clothes for an hour or longer and wash in the laundry as usual.

8) Keeping food fresh- If you out a cake or cookies in a sealed container and add a few sugar cubes, they'll keep fresh longer. The same goes for cheese.

Some surprising uses of Cucumber

Cucumbers are a delicious and nutritious addition to any salad or sandwich, and can even make for a tasty snack on their own. We should all try and include them in our weekly diet so that we benefit from the wide range of vitamins and minerals they provide. But the brilliance of cucumber does not end there, and we bet you didn't realize just how versatile they could be. This common vegetable really is far more useful than you could ever imagine, and can be used for a wide range of tasks to help you maintain body, home, garden, and even clothes. Here's everything you need to know to employ cucumbers outside of a salad:

1. They Can Give You a No-Caffeine Energy Boost Many of us drink coffee, soda, or other caffeine-rich drinks because they provide us with an energy boost when we are starting to lag. Of course, caffeine is not particularly healthy for you, but there is an alternative - the cucumber! Because they are a great source of vitamin B and good carbohydrates, cucumbers can give you a boost when you feel fatigued.

2. They Can Reduce Cellulite and Wrinkles If you are feeling self-conscious about your cellulite, cucumber can be a great help. Take a couple of thick slices and rub them along the area you want to treat for a few minutes. This works because cucumber contains a photo-chemical that tightens collagen and firms up the outer layer of your skin which, in turn, reduces the appearance of visible cellulite. It can also be effective on wrinkles. So, use them as part of your regular moisturizing routine.

3. They Can Eliminate Bad Breath
If you've just finished a lovely plate of fish, but don't want to breathe the odor on everyone in your presence, take a slice of cucumber and use your tongue to pin it against the roof of your mouth. Hold it there for around a minute and the photo-chemicals it contains will attack the bacteria and eliminate your problem.

4. They Can Rejuvenate and Replenish You If you want a quick and easy facial you can make at home, then slice up a generous amount of cucumber and boil in a pot of water. Remove the pot from the heat when it has boiled, place a towel over your head and lean over it, allowing the steam to hit your face. The natural chemicals inside the cucumber will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, while your skin will look great.

5. They Fight Headaches
If the rigors of daily life have left your head pounding, or you drank too much red wine while dining out, cucumber can rescue you from a nasty headache. Because they are high in vitamin B, sugar, and electrolytes, cucumbers replenish nutrients that your body needs to fight off a hangover, or defeat the headache that has been throbbing all day. All you need to do is eat half a cucumber before bed, and then go to sleep as normal.

6. They Can Fight Off Urges to Snack If you are in between meals and feeling peckish, it can be tempting to turn to the cookie jar or ice-cream tub to satisfy urges. Most of us feel bad immediately after, and regret spoiling our dinner, so why not learn from our ancestors and use cucumber to fight off compulsions to snack? For centuries, it has been used by trappers, explorers, and traders as a quick fix to fend off hunger, and just a few sticks of cucumber should do the trick.

7. They Can Soothe Sunburn Cucumbers are a great cooling agent and some doctors even use them to treat patients with sore, burned skin. You just need to rub a thick slice over the affected area and you should feel quick relief.
8. They Can Drive Away Garden Pests
Cucumber can be used in your garden to drive away those pesky critters that chomp their way through your precious plants and flowers. Simply place a few slices in an aluminum container (most empty canned products should be fine to use) and place the containers around your flower beds. The cucumber and aluminum react together and make a handy repellent.
9. They Can Relieve Constipation

The high fiber and water content in cucumbers make them useful if you are suffering from constipation. So next time you are blocked up, try eating half a cucumber and seeing if it causes anything to move. If you are someone who suffers from ongoing constipation, try adding more cucumber to your daily diet.

10. They Can Help You Look Great! People have been putting cucumber over their eyes to reduce puffiness and dark circles for many years. To prepare the cucumber properly for this task, take a cold one fresh from the refrigerator and cut two thick slices. Find a room in your house where you can relax and set the cucumber slices over your closed eyes for around ten to fifteen minutes. You will look and feel great afterwards!

Alzheimer's vs. Dementia: How They Differ And What To Do

Dementia and Alzheimer's disease may share many of the same symptoms, but the two are not different names for the same condition. Here’s what you need to know about both in order for you to avoid this common mistake.

Dementia is a syndrome, or a group of symptoms that consistently occur together. It is not a specific disease. The term “dementia” is used to describe a set of symptoms that can include memory loss, difficulty thinking, problem solving, or issues with language. Dementia is caused by damage to the brain cells, and because Alzheimer’s is a disease that destroys the brain, it is one of the most common causes of dementia.

As many as 50 to 70% of all dementia cases are caused by Alzheimer’s, Alzheimer's net  reported. However, other conditions can also cause dementia, such as Parkinson’s Disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. In addition, dementia is often incorrectly referred to as "senility" or "senile dementia," which reflects the formerly widespread but incorrect belief that serious mental decline is a normal part of aging.

According to The Alzheimer's Association, the symptoms of dementia vary greatly and can include factors such as memory troubles, communication and language problems, loss of the ability to focus and pay attention, difficulties with reasoning and judgement, and trouble with visual perception. However, different types of dementia are associated with different types of brain damage.

In addition, an estimated 10 percent of people with dementia have more than one type at the same time, with the most common combination being Alzheimer's disease with vascular dementia, The Alzheimer's Society reported.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, Alzheimer’s Disease is a specific type of dementia caused when high levels of certain proteins inside and outside brain cells make it hard for brain cells to stay healthy and to communicate with each other. This leads to the loss of connections between nerve cells, and eventually to the death of nerve cells and loss of brain tissue.

Here's the major difference between Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia — when an individual is diagnosed with dementia, they are diagnosed based on their symptoms without actually knowing what's behind the symptoms. In Alzheimer’s disease, the exact cause of the symptoms is understood. In addition, Alzheimer's disease is not reversible, whereas some types of dementia, such as those caused by nutritional problems or a drug interaction, can be reversed.

Study Just Linked Chronic Fatigue Syndrome to Gut Bacteria

A new study has shown that people with chronic fatigue syndrome have abnormal levels of specific gut bacteria - providing even more evidence that the condition isn't "just in a person's head".

For decades, millions of people have reported experiencing symptoms now associated with a condition called chronic fatigue syndrome - a debilitating disease that causes brain fog, severe pain, and exhaustion so extreme, patients can't go about their daily lives, and sometimes can't even get out of bed. But a physical cause has been elusive, leaving many feeling that their condition isn't being taken seriously.

It was only in 2015 that the US Institute of Medicine detailed a comprehensive way to diagnose chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), and earlier this year, scientists linked the condition to faulty cell receptors in immune cells for the first time - which explains why the side effects can be so varied and hard to pin down.

But there are still no effective treatments for the disease, and no cure - some commonly prescribed treatments for the condition have been cognitive behavioural therapy and exercise, neither of which have any evidence to support they work, and could actually be doing more harm than good.

Now, new research has shown that patients with ME/CFS have abnormal levels of specific gut bacteria - and those levels change depending on the severity and type of symptoms they have.

"Individuals with ME/CFS have a distinct mix of gut bacteria and related metabolic disturbances that may influence the severity of their disease," said one of the researchers.

"By identifying the specific bacteria involved, we are one step closer to more accurate diagnosis and targeted therapies," added lead researcher.

The study adds to research from last year, which showed that up to 80 percent of patients with ME/CFS could be accurately diagnosed by looking at their gut bacteria.

And it's also known that up to 90% of ME/CFS patients have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), so the latest research began to untangle the specific gut bacteria changes associated with each condition.

The team followed 50 ME/CFS patients and 50 healthy controls, who had been carefully matched. They tested the number of bacterial species in faecal samples, and looked at the immune molecules in their blood.

They found that seven distinct intestinal bacterial species were strongly associated with ME/CFS, so much so that an elevated presence of all of them could predict a diagnosis.
The strains were:
  • Faecalibacterium
  • Roseburia
  • Dorea
  • Coprococcus
  • Clostridium
  • Ruminococcus
  • Coprobacillus
There were also specific changes seen in the gut bacteria of those who had chronic fatigue syndrome with IBS, and those who didn't have IBS.

Interestingly, when the team measured bacterial metabolic pathways - the ways that bacteria break down food and send signals to the brain - there were clear differences between the healthy controls and the ME/CFS group.

There were also measurable differences depending on the severity of a patient's symptoms, which suggests that are different subtypes of ME/CFS that could be identified.

While this study involved only a small sample size, with further verification, this could be the first step towards coming up with targeted ways to not only diagnose the debilitating disease, but also treat it.

"Our analysis suggests that we may be able to subtype patients with ME/CFS by analysing their fecal microbiome," said one of the researcher.

"Subtyping may provide clues to understanding differences in manifestations of disease."

The research has been published in the journal Microbiome.

Start reading from very early months to change your child's life

Reading to your infant or young child is a beautiful bonding experience, but there’s far more happening in these literary moments beyond a parent and kid spending time together. In fact, explains pediatrician Jill Alexander, reading (or not reading) to children in the home can shape their entire academic future ― even if the little one is years away from going to school.
Speaking about the vital importance of reading on the monthly series “The Hero Effect,” Alexander emphasizes why reading to babies and children who are so young can have such a long term impact. “We know that 90 percent of brain development happens before a child is 5,” she says. “If we wait until kids are in school, it’s too late.”
Children who are not read to in the home can suffer greatly once they enter school. Those from lower-income homes, Alexander continues, are believed to have a 30-million word gap when compared to their more affluent peers who have been read to, by the time they enter kindergarten. This can make catching up academically nearly impossible.

“If they’re not ready in kindergarten to start learning, they’re not going to be at grade-level by the time they’re in third grade. And if you’re not reading at grade-level in third grade, you get to fourth then fifth and we start having school truancy and dropping out of school,” Alexander says.

To help promote literacy from an early age, Alexander spoke with like-minded family friend Carolyn Jons, the founder of Iowa’s “Raising Readers in Story County.”  Jons was eager to lend the organization’s help to improve early language and literary development, so Alexander inquired about adopting the nationwide “Reach Out and Read” program for her pediatric practice.
“I said, ‘What I’d really like is to have a book to give at every well check-up for kids to encourage reading and get parents to start reading with their kids when they’re young,” Alexander says.
Thanks to the support of “Raising Readers in Story County,” Alexander’s patients soon saw the benefits of “Reach Out and Read.”
“It’s an amazing asset to our community,” says mom Gretchen Schaefer. “It helps kids get access to books and really helps us figure out that it’s very important for them to be reading and understand that it’s something we need to be doing at a very young age.”

6 Effective ways to get rid of bloating

Abdominal bloating could be due to-
1) gas buildup
2)constipation
3( anxiety
4)overeating
5) Indigestion
6) IBS
7) trapped air and more

The best way to treat it is to consume foods that activate bowel movement.
1) Fennel seeds( saunf)- have carminative, diuretic, pain-reducing and anti-microbial properties. It can relax muscle spasms in the digestive tract.
Eat a few fennel seeds after a big meal or make a tea by infusing 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds in a cup of water to 3 times a day.

2) Peppermint- it is rich in menthol oil, which is able to relieve spasms in the gastrointestinal tract, bile duct and gall bladder. It is also known to aid digestion and reduce flatulence.
To reap the benefits, chew on a few fresh peppermint leaves or make yourself a soothing peppermint tea.

3) Ginger- it contains active ingredients like gingerols and shogaols, which treat inflammation and relax the intestinal muscles.
Eat 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger before meals to avoid bloating. Or, make a tea by infusing 6 thin slices in hot water together with honey and lemon and drink 3 times a day.

4) Chamomile tea- has properties that are excellent for soothing the stomach, combating heartburn and relieving bloating.
To benefit from these properties, drink chamomile tea between meals 3 times a day.

5) Caraway seeds ( shah jeera)- thanks to the constituent chemicals carvol and carvene, caraway seeds are very effective at preventing gas buildup and releasing tension in the digestive tract.
If you've bloating problems, chew on a pinch of these seeds a few times throughout the day or crush them to make a tea.

6) Pumpkin- contains nutrients such as Vitamin A, potassium and fibre, which greatly promote digestive health. This means that it can help you keep flatulence and bloating at bay.
Think of creative ways of including pumpkin in your meals. Or eat it separately by steaming, baking or broiling it.

Some tips-
1)Allow yourself more time to eat your meals- eating too much in a short time may result in bloating.
2) Stress may be the cause, if this is the case, try some relaxation techniques, such as breathing exercises.
3)Drink water regularly. A lack of water may lead to bloating.
get yourself checked for lactose intolerance and look out for milk alternatives.
4) Make sure your medications aren't causing you more bloating.

( these may include aspirin, antacids or supplements).
5)Try cutting down on your consumption of processed foods, cigarettes, soda, artificial sweeteners and chewing gum.

The R 50 miracle drug that prevents maternal deaths from excess bleeding

An inexpensive and widely available drug given intravenously within three hours of childbirth could save the lives of one in three new mothers who would otherwise bleed to death after delivery, reports a study in The Lancet.

A global WOMAN (World Maternal Antifibrinolytic) Trial of more than 20,000 women from 193 hospitals in 21 countries, including India, found that giving drug called tranexamic acid (TXA) within three hours after childbirth reduced death from bleeding by 31% and lowered the need for emergency surgery to control bleeding (laparotomy) in one in three (36%) cases.

TXA stops bleeding by stopping blood clots from breaking down too quickly. Severe bleeding after childbirth (known as post-partum haemorrhage or PPH) is the leading cause of the 100,000 maternal death worldwide.

TXA injections are manufactured by several pharma companies in India and cost between R 30 and R 50.

The study found 89 women given tranexamic acid died compared with 127 given placebo in addition to standard care. There were no side effects for either mothers or babies. The study builds on previous research involving 20,000 trauma patients, which showed that tranexamic reduced deaths due to bleeding by almost a third if given within three hours.

India’s maternal mortality rate (deaths per every 100,000 live births) is 167, shows data from the sample Registration System. In 2015, around 45,000 women died from childbirth-related causes, including post-partum haemorrhage -- defined as a blood loss of more than 500ml -- within 24 hours of giving birth.

“We now have important evidence that the early use of tranexamic acid can save women’s lives. It’s safe, affordable and easy to administer, and we hope that doctors will use it as early as possible following the onset of severe bleeding after childbirth,” said Haleema Shakur, associate professor of clinical trials at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Project Director on the WOMAN Trial.

The drug, however, did not prevent a new mother’s risk of having her womb surgically removal (hysterectomy). In situations where safe blood supply is limited, a life-saving hysterectomy is sometimes done immediately after severe haemorrhaging starts, which left no time for TXA to have an effect.

Dried Leaf Tablets Cured 18 Suffering From Drug-Resistant Malaria

18 patients suffering from malaria were reported ill in Congo. The report documents the experiences of patients in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

On not responding to the standard malaria medications they were put on a course of drugs made out of dried leaves of the Artemisia annua plant.

These patients belonged to different age groups ranging from 14 months to 60 years and were reported to not have responded to the standard ACT treatment.

"Successful treatment of all 18 artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT)-resistant cases suggests that DLA (dried-leaf Artemisia) should be rapidly incorporated into the antimalarial regimen for Africa," the researchers said.

All patients showed symptoms of malaria and were originally treated with the recommended medication - artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT). The therapy blends artemisinin, a chemical extract from Artemisia annua, with one or more other drugs that attack the malaria parasite in different ways.

The results, published in the journal Phytomedicine, suggest a new and inexpensive treatment option for the mosquito-borne disease that affects 212 million people worldwide.

All were then treated with intravenously administered artesunate, the front-line medication for severe malaria, but again they showed no improvement. As a last resort, doctors turned to dried-leaf Artemisia, a therapy developed by Pamela Weathers, Professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts, US. After five days of treatment with tablets made from only the dried and powered leaves of Artemisia, all 18 patients fully recovered, the study said. Laboratory tests showed they had no parasites remaining in their blood.

"These 18 patients were dying," Weathers said. "So to see 100 per cent recover, even the child who had lapsed into a coma, was just amazing. It's a small study, but the results are powerful," Weathers added. In 2015, the global tally of malaria reached 429,000 malaria deaths and 212 million new cases, according to the World Health Organization.

Digestion Problems!

The human digestive system is a very complicated and sizeable component of the body. It starts right at the beginning of the mouth, ending at the rectum. Some of the major responsibilities of the digestive system include absorption of essential nutrients and elimination of wastes.
Not only do digestive problems have embarrassing and unwanted symptoms, serious, chronic diseases can be caused if the minor problems are not treated.
Some digestive problems are listed below:
  1. GERD: This is a burning sensation that results from acids in the stomach being squirted into the oesophagus. A burning sensation is felt, right from the chest to the end of the throat. Frequent heartburns can lead to GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), symptoms of which include dry cough, sore throat, chest discomfort and difficulty in swallowing.
  2. Bloating: This is caused due to the presence of excess gas in the colon, small intestines or the stomach.
  3. Dyspepsia: This is an uncomfortable feeling or pain which occurs in the upper abdominal regions, mostly a result of excess food intake. It is commonly referred to as indigestion. Dyspepsia can be discomforting and if prolonged, medical assistance should be opted for.
  4. Chronic Constipation: Persistent constipation (chronic) is a sign that there is a problem with the elimination of wastes. This usually happens when the colon is unable to move or pass stools. Other major causes of chronic constipation can be changes in your usual diet, various eating disorders, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and excessive consumption of dairy products among others.
  5. Food Intolerance: This occurs when the digestive system is unable to tolerate certain food items. This condition is different from food allergies as it only affects the digestive system. Some of the common symptoms include diarrhoea, headache, gas and vomiting.
Possible Serious Conditions-
A gastroenterologist is a type of doctor that specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases involving the digestive system. If you continue to experience digestion problems, it’s time to make an appointment.
More serious signs could mean an emergency medical problem. Those signs include:
These symptoms could be an indication of an infection, gallstones, hepatitis, internal bleeding, or cancer.
Medications-
You may be able to overcome digestion problems with treatment and lifestyle changes. Certain diseases of the digestive system might be long-term, but medications can help alleviate symptoms.
Identifying specific digestion problems and talking to your physician can go a long way in terms of helping your doctor give you a proper diagnosis. Remember, you don’t have to put up with constant digestive issues.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF GRAPES

Benefits of grapes for skin:
  1. When the sunscreen lotion does not help much and sunburn happens, the one of the best home remedies is to apply mashed grapes for about 30 minutes. The grapes are rich in antioxidants (proanthocyanidins and resveratrol). They reduce the damage caused by ultraviolet radiation and also reduces cell damage caused by excessive skin exposure.
  2. Rubbing the grape pulp on the face for about 20 minutes can help reverse and control anti-ageing better than any chemical treatment. It reduces the effect of free radicals which lead to fine wrinkles and dark spots.
  3. Grapes are also rich in vitamins C and E which helps in making the skin supple and improves skin tone and reduces scars.
Benefits for hair:
  1. If hair loss scares you, apply a paste of seeded grapes. The linoleic acid and grape seed oil can add strength and prevent hair fall.
  2. Grapes can also be mixed with fenugreek and chickpeas for use on hair to improve life and lustre of the hair and add volume.
  3. The vitamin E and antioxidants also help improve scalp blood circulation, fight dandruff, reduce itchiness, and improved hair health.
Benefits on overall health:
  1. Relieves headache: The various antioxidants in the grapes help in relieving the headache almost instantaneously. Eat them up or drink if you have a headache, even migraines.
  2. Improves digestion: They improve digestion and reduce digestive problems, thereby curing indigestion. They also are shown to help in controlling colon cancer.
  3. Good in diabetes: Diabetic patients need not be worried about the sweet grapes. The pterostilbene in them helps lower sugar levels, and in the long run, it can also prevent the onset of diabetes.
  4. Cholesterol control: The polyphenols help in controlling heart disease by reducing plaque formation.
  5. Eye health: The reduced oxidation process and controlled inflammatory process helps in improving eye health, especially in the retina, which is full of proteins.
  6. Potassium in Plenty: 100 g of grapes contains about 200 mg of potassium, which is a treasure. It improves blood pressure (by countering sodium), and also controls cholesterol and reduces salt intake.
  7. Brain health: The antioxidants like revasterol help in improving blood flow and helps in controlling Alzheimer’s and improving memory.
