Simple Home Remedies That Really Work

Stinky Feet
Easy cure: Vodka
Remedy for: Foot odor
If your feet smell less than swell, wipe them down with a vodka-soaked washcloth to get rid of the stench. It's the same principle as rubbing alcohol (which works equally well if you'd rather drink your Grey Goose). Vodka contains alcohol, which is antiseptic and drying, so it destroys odor-causing fungus and bacteria and dries out the moisture that lets these organisms grow.

Throbbing Head
Easy cure: Pencil
Remedy for: Headaches
When you're stressed or anxious, you subconsciously clench your jaw and teeth; this strains the muscle that connects your jaw to your temples and can trigger a tension headache. A solution: "Put a pencil between your teeth but don't bite," says an expert. You automatically relax your jaw muscle to do this, which can prevent the pain.

Halitosis ( bad breath)
Simple cure: Yogurt
Remedy for: Bad breath
Preliminary research shows that the live bacteria in yogurt can suppress levels of bad breath–causing bacteria. "Good" bugs in yogurt may crowd out the "bad" stink-causing bacteria or create an unhealthy environment for it, says a dentist.

Painful Blisters
Simple cure: Listerine
Remedy for: Blisters
The classic breath freshener—and powerful antiseptic—can also work miracles on blisters. Moisten a cotton ball with Listerine and dab it on your blister 3 times a day until the area dries out and no longer hurts, says  a certified nutrition consultant.

Throbbing Feet
Easy cure: Tennis ball
Remedy for: Achy feet
For an easy, free mini massage that stretches and soothes your arches, slip off your shoes and roll each foot over a tennis ball, golf ball, or soup can for a minute or two. To cool throbbing feet, roll them over a bottle of frozen water.

Hiccups
Simple cure: Sugar
Remedy for: Hiccups
A teaspoon of sugar swallowed dry can stop hiccups in minutes, says  a professor of medicine. The sugar is believed to modify the nerve muscles that would otherwise tell the muscles in the diaphragm to contract spasmodically and contribute to hiccups.

Seasickness
Simple  cure: Olives or lemons
Remedy for: Motion sickness
Motion sickness causes you to produce excess saliva, which can make you nauseated, some doctors say. Compounds in olives called tannins dry out your mouth and can help soothe the uneasiness, anxiety. Pop a couple at the first hint of nausea; sucking on a lemon can also do the trick.

Fragile Fingernails
Simple cure: Vegetable oil
Remedy for: Brittle nails
In order to really fix dry nails, you have to address the problem of too-little moisture. In addition to using hand lotion regularly, try this nighttime treatment from a dermatologist : Before you go to bed, apply vegetable oil to your hands, then put on vinyl gloves or wrap your hands in plastic wrap to keep the oil off your bedding. The hand coverings force the oil to penetrate your skin, preventing your hands and nails from getting too dry.

Road Rage
Easy cure: Peppermint or cinnamon gum
Remedy for: The stress of a traffic-packed commute
In a  study, scientists  monitored the responses of 25 college students during simulated driving scenarios. The volunteers reported that peppermint lowered their feelings of fatigue or anxiety by 20%. Peppermint and cinnamon each decreased frustration by 25%, increased alertness by 30%, and made the ride seem 30% shorter. Not a gum or candy person? Buy peppermint or cinnamon aromatherapy diffusers for the car.

Less-Than-Pearly Whites
Easy cure: Apple
Remedy for: Whiter teeth
Crunchy fruits and vegetables act as little toothbrushes when you chew them; they have a natural cleansing action that works on tooth enamel to remove stains. In particular, "apples have a gentle malic acid that also helps dissolve stains," says a dentist.

Cold sores
Easy cure- Lemon balm tea
Remedy for: Cold sores
Lemon balm is a first-choice herbal treatment for cold sores, which are caused by a type of herpes virus (not the same kind that's sexually transmitted). It has antiviral properties that work to tame herpes outbreaks, says a researcher. Prepare lemon balm tea by brewing 2 to 4 tablespoons of the herb per cup of boiling water. Let it cool, then dot with a cotton ball on the cold sore several times a day.

Calluses
Easy cure: Licorice
Use it for: Calluses and corns
"Licorice contains estrogen-like substances that soften the hard skin of calluses and corns," says a Dr. Make this homemade licorice paste: Grind up a few licorice sticks, mix them with ½ teaspoon of petroleum jelly, and rub the mixture into the rough areas of your feet.

Home remedy for achy feetEczema
Home remedy for eczemaSimple cure: Olive oil
Remedy for: Eczema
Soothe flareups by applying olive oil directly to the irritated area, says a dermatologist. Packed with antioxidants that can reduce the inflammation associated with eczema, olive oil is the basis for many moisturizers; when used alone, it lacks chemical irritants you may find in store-bought creams. As a bonus, olive oil's antioxidants help prevent and repair damage that can lead to wrinkles and brown spots. Rub 1 teaspoon per square inch of skin, which creates a seal that prevents skin from drying out. For serious cases, cover oil-slathered skin with plastic wrap overnight to lock moisture in.

Hypertension
Home remedy for high blood pressureEasy cure: soothing music
Remedy for: High blood pressure
Thirty minutes of the right tunes every day can help lower BP, according to a research. Researchers found that people on a medication for hypertension further lowered their blood pressure after they listened to music while breathing slowly. Systolic readings (the first number) decreased an average of 3.2 points in a week; a month later, readings were down 4.4 points.

Burnt TongueHome remedy for pizza burn
Easy cure: Ice cream
Remedy for: Pizza burn
The tissue on the roof of your mouth is only a few millimeters thick, so it's very sensitive to hot foods. If you didn't wait to let that pepperoni slice to cool down, soothe your scorched mouth with a spoonful of ice cream or frozen yogurt. "The cool can bring temporary relief," says a Dr. Swigging a cold drink or putting an ice cube in your mouth should also do the trick, but be sure to remove the cube quickly before it becomes painful.

UTIHome remedy for stress
Easy cure: Baking soda
Remedyfor: Urinary tract infections
At the first sign of symptoms, drink a solution made with ¼ teaspoon of baking soda mixed in 8 ounces of water. Continue this once a day until you can get a culture done at a doctor's office and start antibiotics. Baking soda makes the bladder environment more alkaline, which reduces bacteria's ability to multiply, says a retired assistant clinical professor of urology.

BruisesHome remedy for cuts
Simple cure: Cloves
Remedy for: Cuts
Sprinkle powdered cloves on a cut to keep it from becoming infected, says a Dr. Clove oil is rich in eugenol, a chemical that's both antiseptic and pain-killing.

Soft SkinHome remedy for smoother skin
Simple cure: Papaya
Remedy for: Smoother skin
This tropical fruit contains papain, a protein-eating enzyme that dissolves the dead cells on your skin's surface that can make it look dull and rough and leave it prone to breakouts. When used twice a month, this peel leaves skin softer, smoother, and more radiant: Grind 2 tablespoons of washed and peeled papaya in a food processor and add 1 tablespoon of dry oatmeal. Pat this mixture onto clean skin and let it set for 10 minutes before wiping off with a wet washcloth. The enzymes in papaya are gentle, which is why this is an ideal treatment for those with sensitive skin. However, to be safe, do a test spot behind your ear the first time you try it.

WartsHome remedy for warts
Simple cure: Duct tape
Remedy for: Warts
Yes, this really does work! Covering warts with duct tape eliminates them better than freezing them off, according to a study. In the study, the duct tape eliminated 85% of the warts after 2 months, compared with 60% with the freezing method. To use duct tape safely, clean the area. Then cut a piece of duct tape to a size slightly bigger than the wart. Apply the duct tape to the site and rub into place. Every 3 days, remove the tape and file down dead skin with a pumice stone or nail file. Repeat until the wart disappears. Chemicals in the tape suffocate and kill the wart.

Amazing Benefits Of Sugar

When we hear the word sugar, invariably what comes to mind is some exotic dessert, isn't it? Well other than increasing your calories, it has some real benefits too.

1) Calms babies
Pediatric studies have shown that babies who are given a solution of one teaspoon of sugar mixed in 4 glasses of water before getting vaccinated, reacted  more calmly to shots than those who didn't get the sugar solution.

2) Treat Wounds
A pinch of sugar may help heal many types of wounds, such as pressure wounds, ulcers or cuts. Pour a little sugar on the wound to kill all the bacteria in the area and relieve chronic local pain.

3) Treat  A Burnt Tongue
Sipping too quickly from a scalding coffee cup or biting into a steaming pizza are easy ways of burning your tongue. Put a little sugar on the area to get quick pain relief.

4) Clean Dirty Hands
When your hands are very dirty with paint or grease for instance, you can use sugar to remove the hard stains. Add sugar to soap foam to give them a good rub.

5) Nourishes The Roots Of Your Flowers
For every liter of water you give to your flowers, add 3 teaspoons of sugar for nourishment, and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to prevent bacterial growth.

6) Clean Grass Stains
Make a mixture of hot water and sugar and smear on clothes with grass stains. Allow it to soak into the clothes for at least an hour or longer, and then put in the laundry as usual.

7) Keep Food Fresh
If you put a cake or cookie in a sealed container and add a few sugar cubes, they'll keep fresh for  longer. The same goes for cheese too.

8) Ease a spicy burn
Acidic foods and dairy can lessen the pain of too much spiciness in the mouth, but a dash of sugar works well too.

9) Make a body scrub
Sugar makes a splendid exfoliating agent for body scrubs. You can make a super simple one by mixing sugar with oil (canola, almond, jojoba or olive all work well) to create a loose paste. Add some essential oil or vanilla extract if you like fragrance. Gently rub on your skin and then rinse off in the shower.

10) Make a banana sugar scrub
When bananas have reached the point of no (edible) return, they can be appointed to your beauty routine. Banana is moisturizing and works perfectly as a vehicle for sugar in a body scrub. Mash a ripe banana with 3 tablespoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of olive oil. (Don’t over mix.) Gently rub on your skin and then rinse off in the shower.

11). Smooth your lips
Blend a little jojoba or olive oil with caster sugar (also called superfine sugar; you can also make this by putting regular granulated sugar in the food processor for a minute) and a touch of peppermint or vanilla extract, if you like. Place some of the paste on your lips, massage and lick off.

12) Extend lipstick Sprinkle a bit of sugar atop freshly applied lipstick, let it sit, then lick it off. This works to set the lipstick and will extend the application.

13) Battle nematode worms in garden
Have you nematodes? If the plants in your garden have unsightly knots at the roots, they may have fallen prey to the microscopic parasites. To combat them naturally, apply 5 pounds of sugar for every 250 square feet of garden. The sugar will feed microorganisms which will increase the organic matter in the soil, making it a hostile environment for the nematodes.

14) Trap wasps
Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water, fill a jar with it and set it outside to attract wasps. They will fly in and become trapped. What you do with them next is up to you.

15) Make a natural fly strip
Fly strips can be unsightly, but flies on dinner can be even more so. If you can’t scoot them out the window and you require relief, you can make all-natural fly strips by combining equal parts sugar, honey and water in a saucepan. Boil the mixture, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Let cool. Cut pieces of brown packing tape, punch a hole on the end and make a loop with string through the hole. Dip the strips in the mix, hang to let excess drips drop (with a pan beneath to catch drips) until sticky, then hang where the flies are most active.

16) Make a roach motel
Well, more like a roach last supper. Mix equal parts sugar and baking powder and sprinkle over areas of infestation. Sugar attracts the buggers, the baking powder exterminates them. Replace frequently.

17) Clean your grinders
Coffee bean and spice grinders can collect oils that are strong in flavor, but sugar can clean them by absorbing the offending elements. Pour 1/4 cup of sugar into the grinder and run it for 2 -3 minutes. Dump out and wipe well.

18) Attack grass stains
Make a paste of warm water and sugar and apply to grass-stained clothing, let sit for an hour (or longer for tougher stains) and then wash as usual.

19) Keep cakes fresh
If you store cake in an airtight container with a few sugar cubes, it will stay fresh longer.

20) Vanilla your sugar
Split a vanilla bean in half and sink it in a jar full of sugar, let it sit for a week, and voilà, vanilla-perfumed sugar.

10 Natural Remedies to Heal a Burnt Tongue

Everyone at some point has burned their tongue with a surprisingly hot forkful of food. Yet this common occurrence is usually only met with a polite show of sympathy from fellow diners, rather than a helpful remedy. A simple fanning action with our hands may assuage the heat, but what if you’ve suffered a mild or severe burn?

Such an injury can affect your sense of taste, cause pain, redness, swelling, blisters, and even infection. Although burns will usually heal themselves, there are rather a lot of things you can do to remedy the injury more quickly. Here are 10 cool suggestions.

Note: Some people experience a constant burning sensation on their tongues. This is a medical condition called burning tongue syndrome, and it’s unrelated to a burnt tongue.
If you have burned your tongue severely, you need to contact your doctor immediately.
1. Breathe Through Your Mouth The second you realize you’ve touched your mouth with something too hot, spit it out, then stick out your tongue, and breathe orally until the cool air you are pushing out provides you with relief.
2. Have Something Cold
Touching your tongue with something cold will provide instant relief, reduce inflammation, and prevent tissue from being damaged. Furthermore, it will keep your mouth hydrated and moist, helping to prevent bacteria from causing an infection.
Consider sucking on an ice cube or ice pop, eating some ice-cream, drinking cold juice, or sipping cold water. Try to hold any of these items in your mouth as long as you can before swallowing. Continue until the pain disappears.
3. Swish Warm Water Around Your Mouth A 2013 study  has found that applying warm water can limit burn damage. Tissue has a greater chance of surviving because of a greater microcirculatory perfusion.  Salt water is your best bet, since the salt will help stave off an infection.
Mix ½ tsp. salt in a glass of warm water. Swish the solution around your mouth for 30 seconds and spit it out. Repeat throughout the day, until your burn has healed.
4. Honey
A 2014 study shows that honey’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties make it an excellent natural remedy for burns.
Spread 1 tsp. Manuka honey upon your tongue. Let it sit there for as long as you can before swallowing. Repeat this a couple of times throughout the day.
5. Aloe Vera Aloe Vera can soothe damaged tongue cells, reduce pain and inflammation, and help with the healing process. One 2007 Burns study suggested that Aloe Vera can effectively be used to treat both first and second degree burns.
Extract some Aloe Vera gel from a leaf. Apply it to your tongue. Repeat throughout the day. Otherwise, freeze the gel into ice cubes to be sucked on during the day.
6. Yogurt
Yogurt is a natural remedy apt for providing instant relief for your tongue burns, removing the heat. Follow these instructions: From ½ cup of cold, plain yogurt, take a little into your mouth, holding it there for a few moments before swallowing. Repeat until you’ve finished. Do the same a few times throughout the day.
7. Sugar Sugar can soothe and provide comfort for your tongue burn. This remedy will also boost your impaired sense of taste. To consume: Put 1 tsp. sugar on your tongue, hold it against the roof of your mouth until the sugar melts. Repeat until your pain subsides.
8. Mint
Mint contains menthol, which numbs the area of your burn and reduces inflammation. It also possesses antibacterial properties which reduce the likelihood of infection.
Use mint toothpaste and apply it onto your burn. Stick out your tongue until the paste dries. Once dry wash it with cold water. Repeat two or three times a day. Alternatively, sip cooled down mint tea, or chew mint gum.
9. Vegetable Glycerin Vegetable glycerin soothes inflamed tissue, and hydrates your tongue, which is needed to expedite the healing process.
To use: Place some vegetable glycerin onto your tongue, letting it remain for as long as you can endure it. Spit it out and rinse your mouth with cool water. Repeat several times during the day. Alternatively, use glycerin-based mouthwash a few times a day.
10. Vitamin E Oil
Vitamin E oil offers instant relief and assists the tongue tissue’s regeneration. To consume: Open a vitamin E capsule, emptying the oil onto your tongue. With your fingers, spread it evenly onto your burn. Repeat throughout the day.
Extra Tips • Avoid hot liquids that may irritate your burn.
• Steer clear of acidic foods like tomatoes and citrus fruits.
• Avoid crunchy foods such as potato chips and nuts.
• Steer clear of spicy foods: they could irritate your burn.
• Drink cool water to keep your mouth and tongue moisturized.
• Chew gum or suck hard candy to stimulate saliva production.
• Steer clear of alcohol which can irritate your mouth’s lining.
• Maintain good oral hygiene.
• Before eating, test the temperature of hot foods and liquid.
• If your burn does not improve, immediately consult your doctor.
