8+ important signs of vitamin B12 deficiency that are often overlooked

Of all the common vitamin deficiencies, vitamin B12 is among the most harmful. This crucial vitamin is responsible for such big tasks as making DNA and red blood cells, as well as helping your nervous system function properly. Despite its importance, however, your body doesn't make it naturally; we rely on food to supply enough vitamin B12 maintain good health.

If you suffer from Crohn's disease, celiac disease or an immune disorder such as Grave's disease or lupus, your doctor probably has talked to you about the dangers of vitamin B12 deficiency. People with those conditions are not the only ones who need to worry, however; vegans and vegetarians, as well as people over the age of 50, are at particular risk for this form of anemia. Here's how to know if you are vitamin B12 deficient.
1. Pale yellow skin. Red blood cells produce bilirubin as they break down, which causes jaundice.
2. Numbness and tingling. Vitamin B12 deficiency has a direct effect on the nerves. Numbness, tingling, tremors and problems with balance can point to depleted vitamin B12 levels.
3. Mood swings. The same deficiency that can cause tingling and numbness also can affect your mood. Anxiety, depression and extreme ups and downs can signal a lack of the vitamin B12 that helps synthesize important mood-regulating chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine. And, of course, if the feeling lasts more than two weeks, seek medical help.
4. Smooth, red tongue. Vitamin B12 can cause a loss of papillae on the tongue. Taste buds are located on the papillae, so if you lose a taste for food and no longer find eating enjoyable, talk to your doctor about checking your vitamin B12 level.
5. Eye problems. An extreme lack of vitamin B12 can damage the optic nerve. This can cause blurry or double vision, sensitivity to light and, in some cases, vision loss.

6. Burning feet. Nerve damage from vitamin B12 deficiency may manifest as a burning sensation in the feet. Like numbness and tingling, the sensation typically begins in the fingers or toes and, left untreated, can spread up the arms and legs.
7. Difficulty walking. If you stagger or lose your balance when walking, a vitamin B12 deficiency may be causing neurological damage, says Harvard Health Publications.

8. Memory loss. Difficulty thinking and memory loss are two more neurological symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency.

If you are over the age of 50, a strict vegetarian or vegan, or have had weight loss surgery, talk with your doctor about having your B12 level checked. It's also a good idea if you take a proton-pump inhibitor such as Nexium, an H2 blocker such as Zantac, or metformin for diabetes.

Pistachios can be great for preventing diabetes and heart diseases

The best part about eating nuts that they make for a tasty and healthy snack. They are fibrous and help maintain gut health like nothing else. Similarly, pistachios, a type of tree nut has many health benefits that are even supported by science. Pistachios are also associated with smooth functioning of colon. They are great source of fibre that keep bowel movement under check. Just handful of these can help ensure proper bowel functioning. Apart from this, pistachios are also good source of proteins and anti-oxidants. Probably, that’s the reason their popularity for over thousand years now. Even science vouches for its health benefits. Here are the reasons you should consider making pistachios a part of your daily diet.

Pistachios for eye health: These are the only nuts that contain coronoids which are responsible for reducing the risks of diseases associated with eyes. Pistachios contain the same coronoids that are found in human retina and lens. These can also help in decreasing the chances of developing cataracts and age-related eye problems. Experts suggest consuming coronoids with fats for the easier absorption in body. In case of pistachios, good fats are already present.

Heart health 1 1
Pistachios for heart health: High levels of bad cholesterol in body could lead to the blocking of arteries that in a long run might cause a heart attack. Pistachios contain monounsaturated fats which are considered good for lowering the level of bad cholesterol. Adding pistachios to your low-fat diet can help to add good fats necessary for healthy body functioning.

Pistachios for healthy immune system: These nuts are great source of vitamin B6. As known, vitamin B6 helps in strengthening immune system. Presence of anti-oxidants in pistachios help the body to fight against various microbial diseases. Thus, keeping immune system functioning proper. Pistachios also contain vitamin E and vitamin A; both these vitamins are known for their damage-control properties. Eating pistachios during and after infection can help in better and speedy recovery.

Pistachios for diabetes: In diabetes, sugar form a bond with protein that makes it unusable by the body. This process is called gycation. It has been proven that anti-oxidants present in pistachios are great for decreasing the gycation rate. Therefore, these nuts are beneficial in diabetes management.
,
Pistachios for weight management: The monounsaturated fats present in pistachios doesn’t cause weight gain. Also, fibres in it can help in flushing toxins out of the body. Fibres also keep you full for long thus, overeating can be significantly decreased.

Ice Therapy Works Wonders for Your Skin's Health & Beauty

For better or worse, your face is the first thing the world notices about you. It’s for this reason that I invest so much (too much!) time ensuring I look my best by making use of expensive skin care products. I always thought this was a wise investment, but I have recently discovered a method that’s even better, easier and cheaper: cryotherapy
Not only is cryo or ice therapy relaxing and therapeutic it will also improve your skin by rejuvenating it and making it look healthy and radiant again. Whether you opt for green tea, cucumber or other novel cubes, all you really need for cryotherapy is plenty of ice.
Important Information About Ice Therapy:
•    Make sure your face is clean before beginning.
•    Always wear gloves when holding ice cubes, in order to protect your hands.
•    Never let ice make direct contact with your skin. Avoid this by covering the ice with either a soft cloth or plastic bag.
•    Do not apply any ice packs to your body for longer than 1 hour, otherwise, you are at risk of skin burns.
•    You can gain even more skin benefits by making cucumber, green tea, horsetail tea or garlic ice cubes.

The following 6 tips will work best when combined with both regular exercise and a good, healthy diet:
1. Make Your Skin Smoother Try this simple tip in the evenings or before you go to sleep: after washing your face, fill up a plastic bag with some ice, then use it to massage your face and neck for approximately three minutes. You should see results in a matter of moments, with your skin becoming smoother and fresher. This will also help you sleep better and even help prevent wrinkles.
2. Banish Acne
Ice therapy is a terrific method for clearing your skin of acne. To do this, first, wash your face as normal. Then wrap one ice cube up in a napkin or soft cloth. Press this gently against your spot or troubled area for between three and five minutes. You’ll be stunned by the results.
3. Prevent and Reduce Wrinkles Massage your face daily, perhaps before applying makeup, for around one minute to improve blood circulation to your facial skin. The increased circulation is known to prevent premature aging and wrinkling.

4. Shrink Open Pores
If your pores are too opened out, try this ice therapy method. Simply rub a covered ice cube onto your face for two to three minutes. If you repeat this daily, you should notice your pores shrinking after a few days have passed.
5. Get Rid of Puffy Eyes We get puffy eyes for many reasons, but the most common is through crying. To banish the tell-tale effects of this wrap 2 ice cubes in cloth pieces and place them over your closed eyes. Now carefully massage the inflammations for two minutes, making slow, circular motions.
6. Fight Stomach Fat
For a home-made alternative to expensive cryotherapy sessions, try this fat-burning massage. Put an ice pack onto your stomach for 15 minutes, then take it away for three minutes. Repeat this for up to an hour (remembering that an hour is the upper limit). Ice actually turns white fat cells into brown cells. These brown fat cells are more easily and speedily burned by your natural metabolic processes

10 Beauty Habits You'll Be Thankful You Adopted

There’s a lot more to beauty than just good genetics. In fact, much of it is down to adopting good habits, such as drinking a glass of water, or religiously following a multi-step skincare system. The cumulative effects of such good habits can only serve you in good stead in the future. Here are 10 useful beauty habit that you’ll be glad you took up:

1. Keep your feet above your head
Lie down, facing upward, and lean your legs against a wall while you’re on the phone or doing a face mask. This habit can help you to avoid varicose veins when you get older. In addition, it helps blood from your legs flow into your body without also having to overcome the force of gravity. It’s a great way of giving your veins a rest.
2. Use SPF all year round
Although doing so might seem odd, applying sunscreen to your skin all the way throughout the year is a really good habit to adopt. That’s because the sun’s radiation affects your skin regardless of whether it’s spring, summer, fall or winter. Various studies have shown that those who apply sunscreen daily age 24% more slowly than those who do not.
3. Take care of the skin on your neck
Did you know that the skin on your neck is as vulnerable as the skin on your eyelids? In fact, the neck is often the place that ages first. This is especially true for people that sleep horizontally, or on high pillows. Consider your neck to be part of your face, and make sure that you moisturize it in just the same way too.
4. Carry a bottle of water with you
Keep a reusable water bottle with you at all times, and use it. Keeping hydrated is absolutely one of the best things you can do to stave off aging.
5. Sleep on smooth pillowcases
Silk or satin pillows can do wonders for your skin when compared to cheaper ones. If you don't own silk or satin pillows, it's a good idea to invest in some. Their slippery surfaces will minimize friction and make your hair and face look fresher.
6. Don’t wear hairbands that are too tight
You should never tie your hair up too tight because doing so damages its structure and makes it brittle. Try using spiral hair ties instead, and if you really must wear your hair up, make sure that you don't tie it up too tight!
7. Follow the 2/30 rule
This one is super simple - spend two hours watching TV, then half an hour exercising! The theory goes that people who watch TV for more than two hours each day are more prone to eating junk food, so this rule aims to reduce your susceptibility to eating such food. Getting into this habit will prevent you from gaining weight and give you more time to enjoy any hobbies you may have.
8. Use floss and mouthwash
Since we were young, we've been taught to brush our teeth twice a day, but that that's not really enough for keeping your teeth healthy and your smile white. Make sure you use mouthwash and dental floss to supplement your brushing - it'll keep your teeth beautiful!
9. Hold your smartphone at eye level
Holding your smartphone at eye level will help to prevent wrinkles that would accumulate if you're constantly bending your neck to look at a smartphone or book. Simple, but effective.
10. Talk on the phone with a headset
Smartphones tend to have 18 times the amount of bacteria that a flush handle on a toilet in a public bathroom has. Try using your smartphone on loudspeaker, with a headset or alternatively, make sure that you clean it with wipes every single day.

Amazing Benefits Of Sugar

When we hear the word sugar, invariably what comes to mind is some exotic dessert, isn't it? Well other than increasing your calories, it has some real benefits too.

1) Calms babies
Pediatric studies have shown that babies who are given a solution of one teaspoon of sugar mixed in 4 glasses of water before getting vaccinated, reacted  more calmly to shots than those who didn't get the sugar solution.

2) Treat Wounds
A pinch of sugar may help heal many types of wounds, such as pressure wounds, ulcers or cuts. Pour a little sugar on the wound to kill all the bacteria in the area and relieve chronic local pain.

3) Treat  A Burnt Tongue
Sipping too quickly from a scalding coffee cup or biting into a steaming pizza are easy ways of burning your tongue. Put a little sugar on the area to get quick pain relief.

4) Clean Dirty Hands
When your hands are very dirty with paint or grease for instance, you can use sugar to remove the hard stains. Add sugar to soap foam to give them a good rub.

5) Nourishes The Roots Of Your Flowers
For every liter of water you give to your flowers, add 3 teaspoons of sugar for nourishment, and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to prevent bacterial growth.

6) Clean Grass Stains
Make a mixture of hot water and sugar and smear on clothes with grass stains. Allow it to soak into the clothes for at least an hour or longer, and then put in the laundry as usual.

7) Keep Food Fresh
If you put a cake or cookie in a sealed container and add a few sugar cubes, they'll keep fresh for  longer. The same goes for cheese too.

8) Ease a spicy burn
Acidic foods and dairy can lessen the pain of too much spiciness in the mouth, but a dash of sugar works well too.

9) Make a body scrub
Sugar makes a splendid exfoliating agent for body scrubs. You can make a super simple one by mixing sugar with oil (canola, almond, jojoba or olive all work well) to create a loose paste. Add some essential oil or vanilla extract if you like fragrance. Gently rub on your skin and then rinse off in the shower.

10) Make a banana sugar scrub
When bananas have reached the point of no (edible) return, they can be appointed to your beauty routine. Banana is moisturizing and works perfectly as a vehicle for sugar in a body scrub. Mash a ripe banana with 3 tablespoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of olive oil. (Don’t over mix.) Gently rub on your skin and then rinse off in the shower.

11). Smooth your lips
Blend a little jojoba or olive oil with caster sugar (also called superfine sugar; you can also make this by putting regular granulated sugar in the food processor for a minute) and a touch of peppermint or vanilla extract, if you like. Place some of the paste on your lips, massage and lick off.

12) Extend lipstick Sprinkle a bit of sugar atop freshly applied lipstick, let it sit, then lick it off. This works to set the lipstick and will extend the application.

13) Battle nematode worms in garden
Have you nematodes? If the plants in your garden have unsightly knots at the roots, they may have fallen prey to the microscopic parasites. To combat them naturally, apply 5 pounds of sugar for every 250 square feet of garden. The sugar will feed microorganisms which will increase the organic matter in the soil, making it a hostile environment for the nematodes.

14) Trap wasps
Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water, fill a jar with it and set it outside to attract wasps. They will fly in and become trapped. What you do with them next is up to you.

15) Make a natural fly strip
Fly strips can be unsightly, but flies on dinner can be even more so. If you can’t scoot them out the window and you require relief, you can make all-natural fly strips by combining equal parts sugar, honey and water in a saucepan. Boil the mixture, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Let cool. Cut pieces of brown packing tape, punch a hole on the end and make a loop with string through the hole. Dip the strips in the mix, hang to let excess drips drop (with a pan beneath to catch drips) until sticky, then hang where the flies are most active.

16) Make a roach motel
Well, more like a roach last supper. Mix equal parts sugar and baking powder and sprinkle over areas of infestation. Sugar attracts the buggers, the baking powder exterminates them. Replace frequently.

17) Clean your grinders
Coffee bean and spice grinders can collect oils that are strong in flavor, but sugar can clean them by absorbing the offending elements. Pour 1/4 cup of sugar into the grinder and run it for 2 -3 minutes. Dump out and wipe well.

18) Attack grass stains
Make a paste of warm water and sugar and apply to grass-stained clothing, let sit for an hour (or longer for tougher stains) and then wash as usual.

19) Keep cakes fresh
If you store cake in an airtight container with a few sugar cubes, it will stay fresh longer.

20) Vanilla your sugar
Split a vanilla bean in half and sink it in a jar full of sugar, let it sit for a week, and voilà, vanilla-perfumed sugar.
