Never Clean These Household Items With Glass Cleaner

Store-bought glass cleaner is a handy tool in any house. It can be used to clean all sorts of surfaces – from windows and mirrors to sinks and many plastic appliances. Glass cleaners are also great for de-greasing plastic and glass surfaces quickly and effectively. That being said, most of these cleaners contain ammonia and can’t be used to clean everything around your house. In fact, the ingredients in these cleaning solutions can cause lasting damage on some surfaces. Check out the cleaning tasks you shouldn’t use a glass cleaner for.

1. Laptop, Phone, and TV Screens
Things You Should Never Clean With Glass Cleaner, Phone screen
The chemicals in most glass cleaners can distort plastics over time, including the tint on the flat panel screen of modern TVs. Yes, you might get the screens of your TVs, laptops, and smartphones to shine temporarily after using a glass cleaner on them, but the ingredients in these liquids are too aggressive and can damage their delicate surface.

We suggest you use a microfiber cloth with a little diluted vinegar to clean these screens. It will not just give them a shiny look but will also be safer. Remember to use a gentle touch and not press too hard when you are cleaning these screens as you might end up damaging them accidentally.

It would also be a good idea to use disinfecting wipes or liquids to sanitize your TV, laptop, and phone screens right now. The COVID-19 pandemic is here to stay for a while and it would be prudent to disinfect these devices to keep germs at bay.

2. Wooden Furniture
Things You Should Never Clean With Glass Cleaner, Wooden Furniture
The wooden furniture in your house does require regular cleaning. However, that doesn’t mean that you should use your glass cleaner spray on them just because it's convenient. As we mentioned, most glass cleaners contain ammonia which can damage wooden surfaces if used frequently on them. Moreover, you risk leaving ugly stains or damaging the polish of your wooden furniture with this cleaning solution.

Remember that wood isn’t like any other plastic item in your house; it’s a natural material that can dry out and crack, just like our skin. So if you want to clean any wooden surfaces, get good furniture polish or wipes. Look for the ones that have food-grade mineral oil and natural waxes to keep wood moist and protected.

3. Bleach
Things You Should Never Clean With Glass Cleaner, bleach

Never mix bleach with glass cleaner or any ammonia-based cleaning agents for cleaning purposes. Since bleach is known to be a robust cleaning agent and does a fantastic job of killing germs, some people might assume that mixing it with glass cleaner would make the latter more effective. However, when bleach comes into contact with the ammonia in the glass cleaners, it produces a toxic gas called chloramines. The toxic fumes of chloramines can be harmful to you and can even cause shortness of breath and chest pain. So, never mix these two cleaning agents.

4. Granite or Marble Kitchen Countertops
Things You Should Never Clean With Glass Cleaner, Granite or Marble Kitchen Countertops
Kitchen countertops can get dirty and greasy quite quickly and need to be cleaned regularly. You might be tempted to use a glass cleaner for getting rid of the oil splatters, tough stains, food particles, and other grime from your kitchen countertop. But do note that if you have a granite or marble kitchen top, a glass cleaner can be harmful to them. The ingredients of the glass cleaner can prove to be a little too aggressive for the porous types of stone like granite and marble and can dull their surfaces or even cause permanent stains.

Instead, get a natural cleaner made specifically for stone. It will effectively clean your marble or granite countertop and ensure there’s no staining.

5. Carpet Stains
Things You Should Never Clean With Glass Cleaner, Carpet Stains
If you notice an ugly stain on your carpet, don’t panic and immediately grab the glass cleaner bottle to remove it. Many glass cleaner formulations have too high of a pH level, which can set permanent stains or harm the fabric of your fragile carpet. The blue dye added to most glass cleaners can also easily leave a stain on a light-colored carpet. And once the blue color sets in on the carpet, even a heat transfer dye removal process won’t be able to remove it.

To get rid of carpet stains, opt for mild cleaning agents. A formula that can work is mixing 1/4 cup of white vinegar and 1 tbsp. of dish soap along with water and spraying it on the affected area. Let it soak for 5-10 minutes and then wipe it with a clean, dry towel.

10 Beauty Habits You'll Be Thankful You Adopted

There’s a lot more to beauty than just good genetics. In fact, much of it is down to adopting good habits, such as drinking a glass of water, or religiously following a multi-step skincare system. The cumulative effects of such good habits can only serve you in good stead in the future. Here are 10 useful beauty habit that you’ll be glad you took up:

1. Keep your feet above your head
Lie down, facing upward, and lean your legs against a wall while you’re on the phone or doing a face mask. This habit can help you to avoid varicose veins when you get older. In addition, it helps blood from your legs flow into your body without also having to overcome the force of gravity. It’s a great way of giving your veins a rest.
2. Use SPF all year round
Although doing so might seem odd, applying sunscreen to your skin all the way throughout the year is a really good habit to adopt. That’s because the sun’s radiation affects your skin regardless of whether it’s spring, summer, fall or winter. Various studies have shown that those who apply sunscreen daily age 24% more slowly than those who do not.
3. Take care of the skin on your neck
Did you know that the skin on your neck is as vulnerable as the skin on your eyelids? In fact, the neck is often the place that ages first. This is especially true for people that sleep horizontally, or on high pillows. Consider your neck to be part of your face, and make sure that you moisturize it in just the same way too.
4. Carry a bottle of water with you
Keep a reusable water bottle with you at all times, and use it. Keeping hydrated is absolutely one of the best things you can do to stave off aging.
5. Sleep on smooth pillowcases
Silk or satin pillows can do wonders for your skin when compared to cheaper ones. If you don't own silk or satin pillows, it's a good idea to invest in some. Their slippery surfaces will minimize friction and make your hair and face look fresher.
6. Don’t wear hairbands that are too tight
You should never tie your hair up too tight because doing so damages its structure and makes it brittle. Try using spiral hair ties instead, and if you really must wear your hair up, make sure that you don't tie it up too tight!
7. Follow the 2/30 rule
This one is super simple - spend two hours watching TV, then half an hour exercising! The theory goes that people who watch TV for more than two hours each day are more prone to eating junk food, so this rule aims to reduce your susceptibility to eating such food. Getting into this habit will prevent you from gaining weight and give you more time to enjoy any hobbies you may have.
8. Use floss and mouthwash
Since we were young, we've been taught to brush our teeth twice a day, but that that's not really enough for keeping your teeth healthy and your smile white. Make sure you use mouthwash and dental floss to supplement your brushing - it'll keep your teeth beautiful!
9. Hold your smartphone at eye level
Holding your smartphone at eye level will help to prevent wrinkles that would accumulate if you're constantly bending your neck to look at a smartphone or book. Simple, but effective.
10. Talk on the phone with a headset
Smartphones tend to have 18 times the amount of bacteria that a flush handle on a toilet in a public bathroom has. Try using your smartphone on loudspeaker, with a headset or alternatively, make sure that you clean it with wipes every single day.

Prolonged TV Viewing May Double Blood Clot Risk

Many people, especially very old and very young have become TV addicts. Some view it ( older generation) to kill their loneliness and boredom. But watching TV for hours, makes one a couch potato, which is harmful for health, bad for eye-sight and makes one obese, as the person doesn't get time to exercise !

Experts have another reason for you to stop binge-watching TV. A team of researchers has found a link between prolonged TV viewing and increased risk of blood clot. "Watching TV itself isn't likely bad, but we tend to snack and sit still for prolonged periods while watching," said a Professor.  Those who watched TV "very often" were at 1.7 times higher risk of developing blood clots compared to those who watch TV "never or seldom". Previously conducted studies have associated prolonged TV viewing with heart disease involving blocked arteries.

Sedentary lifestyle is one of the leading causes of lifestyle diseases. Binge-eating while prolonged TV viewing may also up your risk of developing a range of health issues. Speaking of blood clots, these can occur due to a host of reasons like hypertension, diabetes, heart ailments, high cholesterol, obesity, liver diseases, anemia, smoking, plaque formation in arteries, internal injuries among others.

Interestingly, some common kitchen ingredients can be used to get rid of blood clots naturally. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory in nature and may help in reducing blood clots as well. Curcumin, found in turmeric, may help prevent blood clot formation by acting on blood platelets. Always keep in mind the fact that for curcumin to be optimally absorbed in the body, one must load up on foods rich in piperine which is chiefly found in black pepper. Garlic is another agent that may help prevent and treat blood clots, sulphur compounds present in garlic cloves may help reduce and heal blood clots faster.

T.V. VIEWING NOT GOOD FOR CHILDREN

Regulators and programme makers are at odds over whether small children should be banned from watching television or using tablets and smartphones.

One country urges parents not to allow children under three to watch TV, and in another, pediatricians also favour a total ban on screen time until at least 18 months.

A regulator that overexposing babies and small children to digital devices has become a "public health issue".

"People are realising that screens can cause addiction even among very small children, and in extreme cases autistic problems, what is called virtual autism," she said.

"Silicon Valley also knows this. There are lots of educational apps for babies, but in the end the results are counterproductive," she said.

Studies show that "children over-exposed to them are the ones who find it hardest at school," she said.

France banned its broadcasters from targeting under-threes in 2008, and blocked Fox-owned BabyTV from launching there.

But some programme makers insist that bans do not work, especially with so many parents using television and devices to "babysit" their children.

"It is admirable, but probably unrealistic" to try to keep small children away from screens, said another lady, who heads the TVs children's arm,  and the  network for pre-school children.

"Those times are long gone. Digital is everywhere. This is a tide you cannot get ahead of," she told top TV executives.

That said, the British public broadcaster is so worried about the digital "wild, Wild West" children are growing up in that it is holding a global summit in December to try to put heads together on how they might be better served and protected.

"We need to have this conversation now because we don't want to be saying to ourselves in 10 years time, 'What did we do to our children?'" another said .

She said a broadcaster aimed at children from two upwards, "but we know children younger than that are watching. So we have to be realistic about this, and bear those children in mind" knowing that the TV or a tablet may be their "babysitter".

"We have games and apps that are about helping children develop the cognitive skills that a two-year-old needs. This is about learning on screen and in the real world at the same time, it is not an either or and it's all about moderation," he argued.

For older children, Webb said it was "impossible to think we can control what goes online".

She said the only answer was to "teach children what is and is not for them... how to develop critical thinking and how to cope when they see things they don't want."

She said a broadcaster is setting up a new online resource  to help children deal with the dangers and challenges of social media.

While Instagram, Twitter and Facebook claim that only teenagers over 13 are allowed onto their networks, he said that in one country 75 percent of 10-year-olds and above are on social media.

Despite what the social media giants say, "statistics suggest otherwise and they are finding it harder to stand behind that line," he said.

Another lady said regulators need stronger powers so they can act against inappropriate online content in the same way as they do with traditional broadcasters.

"I think it is absurd that the likes of Facebook and Twitter are not regulated like other content suppliers."

And she was sceptical that the industry would regulate itself when it came to younger children.

However, "if you go to Silicon Valley, all the big tech executives send their children to Montessori schools without screens and just blackboards.

"And Steve Jobs of Apple did not allow his children to use an iPad."

She said parents had to wake up to "what we are holding in our hands. A child who cannot defend themselves should be protected from the harm that these very useful tools can bring.

"Kids should become masters of technology by learning coding" rather than being slaves to it, she said.
