Prolonged TV Viewing May Double Blood Clot Risk

Many people, especially very old and very young have become TV addicts. Some view it ( older generation) to kill their loneliness and boredom. But watching TV for hours, makes one a couch potato, which is harmful for health, bad for eye-sight and makes one obese, as the person doesn't get time to exercise !

Experts have another reason for you to stop binge-watching TV. A team of researchers has found a link between prolonged TV viewing and increased risk of blood clot. "Watching TV itself isn't likely bad, but we tend to snack and sit still for prolonged periods while watching," said a Professor.  Those who watched TV "very often" were at 1.7 times higher risk of developing blood clots compared to those who watch TV "never or seldom". Previously conducted studies have associated prolonged TV viewing with heart disease involving blocked arteries.

Sedentary lifestyle is one of the leading causes of lifestyle diseases. Binge-eating while prolonged TV viewing may also up your risk of developing a range of health issues. Speaking of blood clots, these can occur due to a host of reasons like hypertension, diabetes, heart ailments, high cholesterol, obesity, liver diseases, anemia, smoking, plaque formation in arteries, internal injuries among others.

Interestingly, some common kitchen ingredients can be used to get rid of blood clots naturally. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory in nature and may help in reducing blood clots as well. Curcumin, found in turmeric, may help prevent blood clot formation by acting on blood platelets. Always keep in mind the fact that for curcumin to be optimally absorbed in the body, one must load up on foods rich in piperine which is chiefly found in black pepper. Garlic is another agent that may help prevent and treat blood clots, sulphur compounds present in garlic cloves may help reduce and heal blood clots faster.

T.V. VIEWING NOT GOOD FOR CHILDREN

Regulators and programme makers are at odds over whether small children should be banned from watching television or using tablets and smartphones.

One country urges parents not to allow children under three to watch TV, and in another, pediatricians also favour a total ban on screen time until at least 18 months.

A regulator that overexposing babies and small children to digital devices has become a "public health issue".

"People are realising that screens can cause addiction even among very small children, and in extreme cases autistic problems, what is called virtual autism," she said.

"Silicon Valley also knows this. There are lots of educational apps for babies, but in the end the results are counterproductive," she said.

Studies show that "children over-exposed to them are the ones who find it hardest at school," she said.

France banned its broadcasters from targeting under-threes in 2008, and blocked Fox-owned BabyTV from launching there.

But some programme makers insist that bans do not work, especially with so many parents using television and devices to "babysit" their children.

"It is admirable, but probably unrealistic" to try to keep small children away from screens, said another lady, who heads the TVs children's arm,  and the  network for pre-school children.

"Those times are long gone. Digital is everywhere. This is a tide you cannot get ahead of," she told top TV executives.

That said, the British public broadcaster is so worried about the digital "wild, Wild West" children are growing up in that it is holding a global summit in December to try to put heads together on how they might be better served and protected.

"We need to have this conversation now because we don't want to be saying to ourselves in 10 years time, 'What did we do to our children?'" another said .

She said a broadcaster aimed at children from two upwards, "but we know children younger than that are watching. So we have to be realistic about this, and bear those children in mind" knowing that the TV or a tablet may be their "babysitter".

"We have games and apps that are about helping children develop the cognitive skills that a two-year-old needs. This is about learning on screen and in the real world at the same time, it is not an either or and it's all about moderation," he argued.

For older children, Webb said it was "impossible to think we can control what goes online".

She said the only answer was to "teach children what is and is not for them... how to develop critical thinking and how to cope when they see things they don't want."

She said a broadcaster is setting up a new online resource  to help children deal with the dangers and challenges of social media.

While Instagram, Twitter and Facebook claim that only teenagers over 13 are allowed onto their networks, he said that in one country 75 percent of 10-year-olds and above are on social media.

Despite what the social media giants say, "statistics suggest otherwise and they are finding it harder to stand behind that line," he said.

Another lady said regulators need stronger powers so they can act against inappropriate online content in the same way as they do with traditional broadcasters.

"I think it is absurd that the likes of Facebook and Twitter are not regulated like other content suppliers."

And she was sceptical that the industry would regulate itself when it came to younger children.

However, "if you go to Silicon Valley, all the big tech executives send their children to Montessori schools without screens and just blackboards.

"And Steve Jobs of Apple did not allow his children to use an iPad."

She said parents had to wake up to "what we are holding in our hands. A child who cannot defend themselves should be protected from the harm that these very useful tools can bring.

"Kids should become masters of technology by learning coding" rather than being slaves to it, she said.

Beware! Your smartphones can harm your eyes

If smartphones have made our lives easier, there is a flip side too -- they cause vision impairment, says a leading laser eye surgeon.

A Surgeon  has revealed that smartphones have caused cases of myopia (short-sightedness) among young Britons to surge.

He has reported a 35 % increase of patients with advancing myopia, since the launch of smartphones in 1997, and warns that worsening Myopia in young adults could increase by 50 percent within 10 years.

Half of Britons own smartphones and spend an average of two hours per day using them. Combined with the amount of hours spent in front of a computer screen, laptop, tablet and television, it means that particularly young people and children are at risk of permanently damaging their vision.

New research found that the average smartphone user holds the handset 30 cm from their face, with some people holding it just 18 cm away, compared to newspapers and books, which are held 40cm away from the eyes.

According to him, excessive screen watching at a close proximity keeps the genes that control myopia activated well beyond the age that short-sightedness would historically have stabilized, around the age of 21. This is known as 'epigenetics'. Myopia used to stop in our early 20s but now we see it progressing throughout the 20s, 30s, and even into our 40s.

"If things continue as they are, I predict that 40-50 percent of 30-year-olds could have myopia by 2033 as a result of smartphones and lifestyles in front of screens, an epidemic we call Screen-Sightedness. People need to ensure they limit screen time wherever possible even by going outside without their phone for a period of time each day, and also seriously consider the age at which they give their children a smartphone," he said.

Dr. says today's generation of children are most at risk of myopia, with children as young as seven being given their first smartphone.

It is predicted that by 2014 children aged 12 to 17 years will be the second biggest market for smartphones behind 18-24 year olds.
