Vital Tips for Cancer Prevention You Should Take Note Of

Cancer, like we well know, is a dreaded disease. It is estimated that every year, on average, almost 10 million people die from cancer. It is easily one of the world's largest health problems that has a major impact on society, too. Now, you must have heard conflicting reports about cancer prevention. Various cancer-prevention studies have surfaced online over the years that often recommend contradictory tips. The thing is, cancer prevention is still evolving and new measures to stop the disease keep emerging.

For instance, the American Cancer Society (ACS) has released a new set of guidelines recently for reducing the risk of cancer. Our chances of developing cancer are affected by the lifestyle choices we make. A few simple changes in our way of living can go a long way in helping us remain cancer-free. These new guidelines should certainly help in that regard.

Take a look at the new guidelines for cancer prevention

The recommendations from the American Cancer Society focus on increasing physical activity and establishing healthy eating patterns at every age. Let’s take a closer look at some of the important points from their recommendations list.
Adults should engage in 150‐300 minutes of moderate‐intensity physical activity per week. Alternatively, they can indulge in 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week, or a similar combination. It is also vital that one should achieve the upper limit of 300 minutes. They have also recommended that children and adolescents engage in at least 1 hour of moderate or vigorous‐intensity activity each day. Encouraging healthy habits like cycling, walking, and visiting parks is also suggested.

* It is advisable to avoid alcohol. Previously, the ACS had proposed limiting daily alcohol consumption to one drink for women and two men. However, now they advise avoiding alcohol completely. The reason for this change is that it has now come to light that alcohol consumption is the third major cancer risk factor after tobacco use and obesity. If you cannot avoid drinking alcohol, then you must limit it. Ideally, one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men is the upper limit.

Follow a healthy eating pattern at all ages. For this, the ACS proposes consuming foods that are high in nutrients in quantities that can help you maintain healthy body weight. Taking colorful vegetables and fiber-rich legumes (such as beans and peas), whole fruits with a variety of colors, and whole grains can be extremely beneficial in this regard. The ACS also suggests removing the following foods completely:
  • Red and processed meats
  • Sugar-sweetened beverages
  • Highly processed foods
  • Industrially produced grain‐based desserts
  • Ready‐to‐eat or ready‐to‐heat foods
  • Snack foods, candy, and refined grain products.
Sedentary behavior must be limited. This includes sitting, lying down, and watching television, and other forms of screen‐based entertainment for extended hours.

According to the ACS, the guidelines reflect the current science that dietary patterns instead of specific foods are essential to reduce the risk of cancer while also improving one’s overall health.

“There is no one food or even food group that is adequate to achieve a significant reduction in cancer risk,” said Laura Makaroff, DO, the American Cancer Society’s senior vice president of prevention and early detection in a press release. “Current and evolving scientific evidence support a shift away from a nutrient-centric approach to a more holistic concept of dietary patterns.”

Why proper nutrition is so important in preventing cancer

Since the new guidelines have come up, many people have become a little confused particularly about the points regarding healthy eating patterns. Many want to know what they should give up in their diet now.

Leading dieticians say that people must carefully consider what these guidelines mean. Because even the small shifts we make in our eating patterns and how we work towards them can go a long way in improving our health. Also, bear in mind that many of these suggestions have remained quite similar for some time now. They have just been presented in a different and more relevant way.

For instance, the recommendation to limit red and processed meats is not new or specific to a diet pattern for cancer prevention. Thus, you must remember that reducing red and processed meats and following a plant-based diet doesn’t mean that you have to be a vegetarian to see its benefits.

“Reducing meat is the message we often hear, but don’t forget that means you will need to replace the meat in your diet with nutrient-rich plant-based foods, which we know come with their own health benefits,” says Caroline West Passerrello, MS, RDN, LDN, a registered dietician nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Emerging evidence also points to the fact that healthy dietary patterns are associated with a reduced risk for cancer. Vital anti-cancer micronutrients include:
  • Calcium
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin K2
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin C
  • B vitamins.
Also, as mentioned above, vegetables and fiber-rich legumes along with whole fruits can play an important part, too. Obesity is a major risk factor for cancer as well. Experts say that almost 20% of cancers could be avoided by reducing obesity. Thus, eating should be based on our needs and can help us reduce waste. Moreover, it encourages a healthy connection of our minds to our health needs and allows us to lead a more relaxed lifestyle.

Let’s take meaningful steps towards leading a healthy way of life

Reducing cancer rates will not be easy, of course. It will require a collective and consistent effort by the healthcare system, media, corporations, and others, to change the behavior of the society. However, following the guidelines recommended by the American Cancer Society will certainly help. Our first goal should be to reduce the obesity epidemic from everywhere around us, focus on getting more physical activity into our lives along with no smoking and eating right. If all of us pledge to incorporate these points judiciously into our life, then we can definitely make a difference in bringing down the cancer rates.

Remember that many cancers are preventable. This increases the significance of exercise, nutrition, and the need for community involvement. The suggestion made for 300 minutes of exercise per week is based on scientific studies that indicate that exercise can reduce the risk of cancer. It can either be done through weight loss and an improvement in lifestyle or by directly stimulating anticancer molecules in the body.

Now, more than ever, it is time to take meaningful steps towards changing our way of life for our own betterment. Let’s encourage healthy habits in our respective communities and inculcate a lifestyle that is not prone to the risks of cancer.

Know Why Your Cholesterol Is High: Best Foods, Lifestyle Tips For Cholesterol By Experts

How to control cholesterol: Diet plays an important role in terms of determining your cholesterol levels. Cholesterol is of two kinds: good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. High density lipoprotein (HDL) is the good kind of cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL) is the bad kind of cholesterol. When your cholesterol is at normal levels, it is essential for the body. But high cholesterol levels can be harmful for you and puts you at risk of heart attack. A healthy lifestyle and diet can take you a long way in terms of keeping your cholesterol levels under control and maintaining your heart health. In this article, we are going to talk about the foods that can help in improving your cholesterol numbers.

We asked a nutritionist about  high cholesterol and its consequences on health and she says, "High cholesterol is generally caused by one or a combination of certain factors like sedentary lifestyle, a diet high in processed foods, obesity and an overall unhealthy lifestyle. Smoking and alcohol consumption is also related to high cholesterol levels. Having high cholesterol can increase your risk of cardiovascular diseases. It can lead to high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke."

Following are the foods that can help in managing your cholesterol levels:

1. Garlic: one or two crushed garlic cloves if consumed on a regular basis can lower cholesterol levels significantly.
Garlic can help in naturally lowering cholesterol

2. Oats: Oats contain a soluble fibre called beta-glucan that helps in lowering bad cholesterol levels. It is also rich in many essential nutrients.

3. Spinach: Spinach and other green leafy vegetables can bind to the bile acids and help in effectively reducing cholesterol levels. Carotenoids present in spinach also helps in lowering risk of heart diseases.

4. Walnuts: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, walnuts are particularly effective in lowering cholesterol levels.

Talking about lifestyle tips to manage cholesterol, the nutritionist says that limiting salt intake in daily diet can help. Alcohol intake should be avoided or done while practicing moderation."Increase soluble fibre in the diet by consuming fruits and vegetables. Having body weight more than normal is a predisposing factor for high cholesterol. So, it's advisable to keep a check on your weight. Try to indulge in some form of physical activity for minimum 30 minutes on a daily basis. The best effective and simplest to do exercise is brisk walking," she says.

To ensure fitness on-the-go, you can take some simple measures like taking stairs instead of escalators, park your vehicle a little far from where you usually park and then walk to cover the distance, and take a couple of minute walking break from your monotonous office sitting hours.

Cholesterol: Other foods that can help in improving your numbers

1. Omega-3 fatty acids

Fatty fish or foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids should be included in cholesterol diet. Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce triglycerides, which is a type of fat in blood. Omega-3 fatty acids can also help in normalising blood pressure and reduce risk of blood clots. Tuna, mackerel, herring, salmon, trout, walnuts and chia seeds are examples of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

2. Olive oil
Olive oil is a source of healthy fats that should be part of your cholesterol diet. Replace olive oil with your vegetable oil and use it regularly as a cooking oil. Olive oil can also be added to salads. Olive oil can also be used as a substitute for butter on bread or for sauteing food.
Olive oil can help in regulating cholesterol levels in the body

3. Nuts
Nuts have found to be great for heart health. Almonds from the nut family is can improve the cholesterol in your blood. As mentioned above, walnuts are omega-3 fatty acid rich nuts that can be good for keeping cholesterol levels under control. However, nuts are rich in calories and you must consume them in limited amounts to avoid unnecessary weight gain and adverse health consequences.

4. Avocado
By now, it should be clear to you that healthy fats can in fact help in keeping your cholesterol levels under control. Research suggests that including avocado in your daily diet can be good for your heart health. It can also help in improving LDL cholesterol levels in people who are overweight or obese. Monounsaturated fatty acids in avocado can be credited for their cholesterol improving benefits.

Sports can help kids in fighting emotional distress

Parents, please take note. Kids who engage in organised physical activity at a young age are less likely to have emotional difficulties later in life, says a study.

Besides keeping children from being sedentary, physical activities such as structured sports have the potential to be enriching, both physically and mentally, said the study.

“The elementary school years are a critical time in child development, and every parent wants to raise a well-adjusted child,” said study lead author.

For the study, the researchers took data from a cohort of children born in 1997 or 1998. They examined whether consistent participation in organised sport from ages six to 10 would minimize risks associated with emotional distress, anxiety, shyness, and social withdrawal at age 12.

“The results revealed that children who participated consistently from ages six to 10 showed fewer instances of those factors at age 12 than their counterparts who did not engage in physical activity in a consistent way,” said the researcher.

“Getting kids actively involved in organised sport seems to promote global development. This involvement appears to be good on a socio-emotional level and not just because of physical benefits,” he added.

Being less emotionally distressed at the juncture between elementary and high school is a priceless benefit for children as they are about to enter a much larger universe with bigger academic challenges, said the researcher.

Exercise boosts quality of sleep in teens

Exercising for more than usual may lead to improved quality and duration of sleep at night, according to a study.

The study found that getting more exercise than normal- or being more sedentary than usual- for one day, may be enough to affect sleep later that night.

It found that for every extra  hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity, the teens fell asleep 18 minutes earlier, slept 10 minutes longer and had about 1% greater sleep maintenance efficiency that night.

Adolescence is a critical period to obtain adequate sleep , as sleep can affect cognitive and classroom performance, stress and eating behaviours, said a researcher.

The research suggests that encouraging adolescents to spend more time exercising during the day may help their sleep health later that night, he said.

In contrast, the researchers also found that being sedentary more during the day was associated with worse sleep health.

When participants were sedentary for minutes during the day, they fell asleep and woke up later but slept for a shorter amount of time overall.

You can think of these relationships between physical activity and sleep almost like a teeter totter, said a Prof.

When you're getting more steps, essentially your sleep begins earlier, expands in duration and is more efficient.Whereas if you're spending more time sedentary, it's like sitting on your sleep health- sleep length and quality goes down.

While previous research suggests that adolescents need 8-10 hours of sleep at night, recent estimates suggest that as many as 73% of adolescents are getting less than 8 hours of sleep.

Previous research also found that people who are generally more physically active tend to sleep longer and have better quality of sleep.

However, the researchers, said less has been known about whether day-to-day changes in physical activity and sedentary behaviour affected sleep length and quality.

They used data from 417 families from  across 20 states in U.S.

When participants were 15 years old, they wore accelerometers on their wrists and hips to measure sleep and physical activity for 1 week.

One of the strength of this study, was using devices to get precise measurements about sleep and activity instead of asking participants about their own behaviour, which can sometimes be skewed, he said.

The hip device measured activity during the day, and the wrist device measured what time the participants fell asleep and woke up and also how efficiency they slept, which means how often they're sleeping versus tossing and turning , the researcher said.

In addition to finding links between how physical activity affects sleep later that night, the researchers also found connections between sleep and activity the following day.

They found that when the participants slept longer and woke up later, they engaged in less moderate -to- vigorous physical activity and sedentary behaviour the next day.

Watching TV for 2 hours raises your risk of bowel cancer by 70%

A new study has found a link between prolonged screen time, such as watching TV, and an increased risk of bowel cancer. The research showed that lazing in front of the TV for two hours a day or more raises the risk of bowel cancer by nearly 70 per cent.

The study, is the first to identify sedentary lifestyle as a factor that may contribute to the sharp rise in cases of bowel cancer, sometimes called colorectal cancer, among those under the age of 50.

What is bowel cancer and what are the symptoms?

Bowel cancer is a general term for cancer that starts in the large bowel (colon) and the back passage (rectum). It is treatable, but the earlier the condition is detected, the easier it is to treat.
The signs and symptoms of bowel cancer can include -
  • Bleeding from your bottom
  • Blood in your stools
  • A persistent and unexplained change in bowel habits - lasting at least 3 weeks
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason
  • A pain or lump in your abdomen
You should seek medical help if you have one or more of the symptoms of bowel cancer, particularly if they persist for more then four weeks.

Bowel cancer risk and TV viewing: What does the research say?

The researchers studied sedentary behaviours, including TV viewing time, of 89,278 American women in the Study. The findings showed that of the 118 cases of young-onset colorectal cancer diagnosed over two decades of follow up, more than one hour of sitting in front of the TV everyday was associated with a 12 per cent increase in risk compared to those who watched less. The results were even more evident for those viewing more than two hours per day with a nearly 70 per cent increased risk.

According to the study, the results were independent of BMI and exercise and was consistently observed among women who didn’t have a family history of bowel cancer, indicating that being sedentary may be an altogether distinct risk factor for young-onset colorectal cancer. However, the association was stronger for rectal cancer in comparison to colon cancer.

This study may help identify those at high risk and who might benefit more from early screening,” said the study’s co-senior author.

“A sedentary lifestyle is an emerging risk factor for CRC after age 50 years, but its role in young-onset CRC is unknown,” the researchers wrote.

The authors, however, noted that they observed no clear increase in risk for other forms of sitting at home, such as meal time or time spent at a desk.

Traditionally, colorectal cancer - which is mostly preventable - is considered to only strike people who are over the age of 50. But more and more people in their 20s and 30s have been getting diagnosed with the disease.

How to Use Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) for Kidney Stones

Kidney stones can be an uncomfortable and extremely painful experience for anyone who has suffered from them. The pain can range from a dull pain in the stomach to a very severe pain in the lower back and even the inner thigh, and can sometimes be accompanied by nausea and blood in the urine.

The doctor reports that more and more people are suffering from kidney stones, with around one in ten of the population in the US likely to suffer from them at some point in their lives.

If you have kidney stones or have suffered from them in the past, then please continue to read on about how you can use apple cider vinegar (ACV) for treating kidney stones.

What are Kidney Stones and what Causes Them

Kidney stones are formed when there is a buildup of minerals in the kidneys or bladder. The minerals form into small crystals and they are usually passed without pain in the urine.

However, sometimes the crystals grow larger and don’t get flushed out. They then get lodged in the kidneys and urinary tract thus causing a lot of pain.
There are a number of factors which cause this to happen, some of these are:
  • Not drinking enough water (make sure you are aware of the warning signs that tell you your body is lacking water)
  • Eating food with too much sugar and/or salt
  • Being overweight
  • Having a sedentary lifestyle
  • Hereditary factors
Kidney stones can range from the size of a small grain of sand to the size of a pebble. Some have even been known to be the size of a golf ball! There are 4 main types of kidney stones:

Calcium Oxalate. This is the most common type of kidney stone and is caused when calcium combines with oxalate in the urine. It can be caused by eating too much foods like potato chips, peanuts, chocolate, beets, and spinach.

Uric acid- This is more common in men and occurs when there is too much acid in the urine and can be caused by eating too much red meat, organ meat, and shellfish.

Struvite. Mostly found in women, these can develop into large stones and are usually caused by an infection in the kidneys.

Cystine. These are rare and are caused by a genetic disorder.

Symptoms of Kidney Stones

One of the main symptoms that you have kidney stones is pain in your lower back, abdomen or groin area. The pain will usually come in waves and can sometimes be extremely painful. In fact, it’s been described as one of the most painful medical conditions a person can experience. There could also be pain when urinating.
Some of the other symptoms are:
  • Pink, red, brown or cloudy urine
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Constant need to urinate
Of course, if you experience any of these symptoms, you should see your healthcare practitioner as soon as possible.
If you think that you may have kidney stones, then you can use apple cider vinegar for kidney stones as this can help you to start dissolving them.

How to Use Apple Cider Vinegar for Kidney Stones

First of all, it is good to know how apple cider vinegar works to dissolve kidney stones.
Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid. However, when we ingest acetic acid into our bodies it has an alkaline effect. A healthy body needs to be more alkaline than acidic, and calcium oxalate, cystine, and uric acid stones form when the urine has too much acid in it.

Apple cider vinegar stimulates the production of the alkaline substances and helps the urine and blood to become more alkaline. This results in the breakdown of kidney stones and also helps prevent more stones from forming.

One interesting study actually showed that different kinds of human kidney stones dissolved in acetic acid.

Another study found out that that people who consumed fermented vinegar (like apple cider vinegar) had less chances to develop kidney stones.

It is also important to use only raw, unprocessed, unfiltered, organic apple cider vinegar. It should also contain the “mother” in it, the cloudy sediment in the bottle. This contains all the necessary enzymes and nutrients to get the health benefits from it. Here are some ways to use apple cider vinegar to get rid of kidney stones:

Apple Cider Vinegar Refreshing Tonic for Kidney Stones

Mix 1 to 2 tsp. raw apple cider vinegar  in a glass containing 6 to 8 oz of water and drink frequently throughout the day. Drinking a  mixture of water and apple cider vinegar will help to dissolve kidney stones and flush them out of your body.

You can add a little bit of honey to improve the taste and in addition, the combination of honey and apple cider vinegar has a lot of health benefits.

You can also add apple cider vinegar to smoothies or you can drink these ACV detox drinks. Drinking apple cider vinegar is not just good for kidney stones, but it also has many other health benefits.

You can also drink apple cider vinegar every day for preventing kidney stones. To do this, mix 1 to 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar in a large glass of water and drink once a day. The acetic acid in the apple cider vinegar will help regulate your pH levels and help prevent the formation of more kidney stones.

Use Apple Cider Vinegar In Salads to Flush Kidney Stones

You can also use raw apple cider vinegar to make a healthy salad dressing. Just substitute apple cider vinegar for your usual vinegar for your salad dressing.
