How to Use Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) for Kidney Stones

Kidney stones can be an uncomfortable and extremely painful experience for anyone who has suffered from them. The pain can range from a dull pain in the stomach to a very severe pain in the lower back and even the inner thigh, and can sometimes be accompanied by nausea and blood in the urine.

The doctor reports that more and more people are suffering from kidney stones, with around one in ten of the population in the US likely to suffer from them at some point in their lives.

If you have kidney stones or have suffered from them in the past, then please continue to read on about how you can use apple cider vinegar (ACV) for treating kidney stones.

What are Kidney Stones and what Causes Them

Kidney stones are formed when there is a buildup of minerals in the kidneys or bladder. The minerals form into small crystals and they are usually passed without pain in the urine.

However, sometimes the crystals grow larger and don’t get flushed out. They then get lodged in the kidneys and urinary tract thus causing a lot of pain.
There are a number of factors which cause this to happen, some of these are:
  • Not drinking enough water (make sure you are aware of the warning signs that tell you your body is lacking water)
  • Eating food with too much sugar and/or salt
  • Being overweight
  • Having a sedentary lifestyle
  • Hereditary factors
Kidney stones can range from the size of a small grain of sand to the size of a pebble. Some have even been known to be the size of a golf ball! There are 4 main types of kidney stones:

Calcium Oxalate. This is the most common type of kidney stone and is caused when calcium combines with oxalate in the urine. It can be caused by eating too much foods like potato chips, peanuts, chocolate, beets, and spinach.

Uric acid- This is more common in men and occurs when there is too much acid in the urine and can be caused by eating too much red meat, organ meat, and shellfish.

Struvite. Mostly found in women, these can develop into large stones and are usually caused by an infection in the kidneys.

Cystine. These are rare and are caused by a genetic disorder.

Symptoms of Kidney Stones

One of the main symptoms that you have kidney stones is pain in your lower back, abdomen or groin area. The pain will usually come in waves and can sometimes be extremely painful. In fact, it’s been described as one of the most painful medical conditions a person can experience. There could also be pain when urinating.
Some of the other symptoms are:
  • Pink, red, brown or cloudy urine
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Constant need to urinate
Of course, if you experience any of these symptoms, you should see your healthcare practitioner as soon as possible.
If you think that you may have kidney stones, then you can use apple cider vinegar for kidney stones as this can help you to start dissolving them.

How to Use Apple Cider Vinegar for Kidney Stones

First of all, it is good to know how apple cider vinegar works to dissolve kidney stones.
Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid. However, when we ingest acetic acid into our bodies it has an alkaline effect. A healthy body needs to be more alkaline than acidic, and calcium oxalate, cystine, and uric acid stones form when the urine has too much acid in it.

Apple cider vinegar stimulates the production of the alkaline substances and helps the urine and blood to become more alkaline. This results in the breakdown of kidney stones and also helps prevent more stones from forming.

One interesting study actually showed that different kinds of human kidney stones dissolved in acetic acid.

Another study found out that that people who consumed fermented vinegar (like apple cider vinegar) had less chances to develop kidney stones.

It is also important to use only raw, unprocessed, unfiltered, organic apple cider vinegar. It should also contain the “mother” in it, the cloudy sediment in the bottle. This contains all the necessary enzymes and nutrients to get the health benefits from it. Here are some ways to use apple cider vinegar to get rid of kidney stones:

Apple Cider Vinegar Refreshing Tonic for Kidney Stones

Mix 1 to 2 tsp. raw apple cider vinegar  in a glass containing 6 to 8 oz of water and drink frequently throughout the day. Drinking a  mixture of water and apple cider vinegar will help to dissolve kidney stones and flush them out of your body.

You can add a little bit of honey to improve the taste and in addition, the combination of honey and apple cider vinegar has a lot of health benefits.

You can also add apple cider vinegar to smoothies or you can drink these ACV detox drinks. Drinking apple cider vinegar is not just good for kidney stones, but it also has many other health benefits.

You can also drink apple cider vinegar every day for preventing kidney stones. To do this, mix 1 to 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar in a large glass of water and drink once a day. The acetic acid in the apple cider vinegar will help regulate your pH levels and help prevent the formation of more kidney stones.

Use Apple Cider Vinegar In Salads to Flush Kidney Stones

You can also use raw apple cider vinegar to make a healthy salad dressing. Just substitute apple cider vinegar for your usual vinegar for your salad dressing.
