Camera that detects skin cancer in two seconds developed!

Camera that detects skin cancer in two seconds developed!
At a time when the frequency of both non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers has been increasing causing serious concerns throughout the world, scientists in Finland have invented a new camera that could change the way of treating the deadly disease in the coming days.
The new innovative hand-held camera developed by the Finnish researchers at the VTT Technical Research Centre, is able to detect early stages of skin cancer in just two seconds.
"The ultra-precision hyperspectral camera recognises early stages of skin cancer that are invisible to the naked eye," said Heikki Saari, principal scientist at VTT.
Researchers have run a pilot study using the hyperspectral camera, and the preliminary results of the study are promising.
The camera can be used to detect the skin cancer and its precursors for early treatment of the affected areas.
The hyperspectral camera can also be used to detect borders of poorly delineated skin tumours such as lentigo malignas in order to avoid the need for re-excisions.
It captures images in up to 70 narrow wavelengths, whereas a regular camera uses only three.
The pilot protect was done in collaboration the University of Jyvaskyla, the Paijat-Hame Central Hospital and the Skin and Allergy Hospital of Helsinki University Central Hospital.
Skin cancer rates have been growing exponentially due to population, ageing and UV damage caused by excessive exposure to sunlight, said VTT in a press release.

Fructose not behind increase in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

A meta-analysis of all available human trials has revealed that fructose in and of itself is not to blame for the increase in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common chronic liver disease in developed countries, affecting up to 30 percent of their populations.
Since the disease is closely linked to obesity and Type 2 diabetes, there's a growing debate in the medical community about whether diet plays a role in its development, specifically the consumption of fructose.
The possible link to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has become the main criticism against fructose among those who believe there is something unique about the fructose molecule or the way it is metabolized and blame it for the obesity epidemic.
Excess consumption of calories can contribute to the disease, regardless of whether those calories came from fructose or other carbohydrates, lead author, Dr. John Sievenpiper, a researcher in the Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Centre of St. Michael's Hospital, said.
"The one thing fructose is supposed to do above all else is give you fatty liver disease, which some say is a starting point for metabolic syndrome-a term used to describe a group of conditions that puts people at higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other heart-related problems-and Type 2 diabetes itself.
"But we found it behaves no differently than glucose or refined starches. It is only when you consume excess calories in the form of fructose that you see a signal for harm but no more harm than if you consume excess calories as glucose," Dr. Sievenpiper said.
Fructose, which is naturally found in fruit, vegetables and honey, is a simple sugar that together with glucose forms sucrose, the basis of table sugar. It is also found in sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup, the two most common sweeteners in commercially prepared foods.
The research is published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF FLAX SEEDS

flax seed

Some call it one of the most powerful plant foods on the planet. There’s some evidence it may help reduce your risk of heart diseasecancerstroke, and diabetes. That’s quite a tall order for a tiny seed that’s been around for centuries.
Flaxseed is found in all kinds of today's foods from crackers to frozen waffles to oatmeal. The Flax Council estimates close to 300 new flax-based products were launched in the U.S. and Canada in 2010 alone. Not only has consumer demand for flaxseed grown, agricultural use has also increased.  Flaxseed is what's used to feed all those chickens that are laying eggs with higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids.
Although flaxseed contains all sorts of healthy components, it owes its primary healthy reputation to three of them:
  • Omega-3 essential fatty acids, "good" fats that have been shown to have heart-healthy effects. Each tablespoon of ground flaxseed contains about 1.8 grams of plant omega-3s.
  • Lignans, which have both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities. Flaxseed contains 75 to 800 times more lignans than other plant foods.
  • Fiber. Flaxseed contains both the soluble and insoluble types.
Cancer
Recent studies have suggested that flaxseed may have a protective effect against breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. At least two of the components in flaxseed seem to contribute, says Kelley C. Fitzpatrick, director of health and nutrition with the Flax Council of Canada.
In animal studies, the plant omega-3 fatty acid found in flaxseed, called ALA, inhibited tumor incidence and growth.
The lignans in flaxseed may provide some protection against cancers that are sensitive to hormones without interfering with the breast cancer drug tamoxifen. Thompson says some studies have suggested that exposure to lignans during adolescence helps reduce the risk of breast cancer and may also increase the survival of breast cancer patients.
Lignans may help protect against cancer by blocking enzymes that are involved in hormone metabolism and interfering with the growth and spread of tumor cells.
Some of the other components in flaxseed also have antioxidant properties, which may contribute to protection against cancer and heart disease.

Ovulation motivates women to outdo each other

The ovulatory cycle alters women's behaviour by subconsciously motivating them to outdo other women, a new study has found.

For approximately one week every month, millions of women change their economic behaviour and become more focused on their social standing relative to other women, researchers said.
According to study by The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management, the ovulatory cycle alters women's behaviour by subconsciously motivating them to outdo other women.
This research could have important implications for marketers, consumers and researchers.
The researchers conducted three studies, one of which had ovulating and non-ovulating women play the "dictator game."
In this popular economic experiment, a person is given a fixed amount of money that she can choose to share with another person.
"We found that ovulating women were much less willing to share when the other person was another woman. They became meaner to other women," said Kristina Durante, lead author of the study.
Whereas non-ovulating women shared about 50 per cent of the money with another woman, ovulating women shared only half as much, keeping the rest of the cash for themselves.
In another study, women made product choices that could either maximise their individual gains or maximise their relative gains compared to other women.
For example, women indicated if they preferred to have a USD 25,000 car while other women got USD 40,000 cars (Option A) or have a USD 20,000 car while other women got USD 12,000 cars (Option B).
The study found that ovulating women preferred Option B, choosing products that would give them higher standing compared to other women.
"What's interesting about this finding is that ovulating women are so concerned about their relative position that they are willing to take less for themselves just so that they could outdo other women," said study co-author Vladas Griskevicius.
But, the studies find that ovulation doesn't always make women want more status. When women played against a man rather than a woman in the dictator game, the researchers found an even more surprising result.
Whereas ovulating women became meaner to women, they became nicer to men. While non-ovulating women shared about 45 per cent of the money with a man, ovulating women gave 60 per cent of the money to the man.
"These findings are unlike anything we have ever seen in the dictator game. You just don't see people giving away more than half of their money," said Durante.
The study was published in the Journal of Marketing Research.

Spouse death may up risk of heart attack, stroke

The risk of heart attack or stroke is increased in the first 30 days after a partner’s death, a new study published in the journal JAMA internal Medicine has warned. Bereavement is recognised as a risk factor for death and is associated with cardiovascular events, researchers said. Researchers from St George’s University of London, compared the rate of myocardial infarction or stroke in 30,447 older patients, ages 60 to 89, whose partner died to that of 83,588 individuals whose partners were still alive during the same period.
Fifty patients (0.16 per cent) experienced MI or stroke within 30 days of their partner’s death compared with 67 (0.08per cent) of controls, researchers found. The increased risk of MI or stroke in bereaved men and women lessened after 30 days, researchers said. “We have described a marked increase in cardiovascular risk in the month after spousal bereavement, which seems likely to be the result of adverse physiological responses associated with acute grief,” researchers said.
“A better understanding of psychosocial factors associated with acute cardiovascular events may provide opportunities for prevention and improved clinical care,” they said.
