Top five cancer-causing foods you might be consuming everyday

What if your staple diet contains carcinogens, but you keep consuming them daily without realising it? Perhaps, the consequences of daily consumption of these foods can be deadly as it can deplete your body’s natural defense mechanism against foreign particles.

While millions of people are being diagnosed with some type of cancer every year, it’s time we took note of our lifestyles, including eating habits, to avoid falling victim to this dreaded disease. A number of studies have linked certain foods to cancer in addition to other health problems such as heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Here is a list of foods that you probably consume every day without realising that they may contain cancer-causing chemicals:

Canned foods
You may have to avoid this category because most canned goods, such as canned tomatoes, are lined with a chemical called bisphenol-A (BPA), which has been shown to genetically alter the brain cells of rats, and may cause cancer in people. Tomatoes being highly acidic are exceptionally dangerous and can cause BPA to leech from the lining of the can into the tomatoes themselves.

Potato chips

You might love the taste of crunchy potato chips, but they are high in fat and calories, both of which contribute to unintended weight gain. Potato chips and French fries also contain higher levels of acrylamide - a known carcinogen that is found in cigarettes - compared with other foods.

Processed and red meats

The World Health Organisation (WHO) classified processed meat as Group 1, carcinogenic to humans and red meat as Group 2A, probably carcinogenic to humans.

It said that in the case of processed meat, the classification is based on sufficient evidence from epidemiological studies that eating processed meat causes colorectal cancer. Whereas, in the case of red meat, the classification is based on limited evidence from epidemiological studies showing positive associations between eating red meat and developing colorectal cancer as well as strong mechanistic evidence.

All mammalian muscle meat, including, beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horse, and goat are classified as red meat. Processed meats include hot dogs, sausages, bacon, and most lunch meats.

Microwave popcorn

Microwave popcorn contains chemicals that can increase your risk of cancer. The culprit here isn’t the popcorn itself, but it is the chemically-lined bag. Microwave popcorn bags are lined with a chemical known as perfluoro-octanoic acid (or PFOA) that has been linked to an increased risk of liver, bladder, kidney, and testicular cancer in humans. In addition, a study from the University of California linked this toxin to infertility in women.

Hydrogenated oils

Hydrogenated oils, also known as trans fats, are linked to heart disease, immune system deficiency, and cancer. These are vegetable oils that have been processed by creating a chemical reaction with hydrogen - to increase the shelf life of the oil. Margarine is an example of complete hydrogenation. Replacing hydrogenated oils with olive oil, coconut, or grapeseed oil in your diet is a great way to help you live a healthier, happier life.

Food Labels Really Do Affect Consumer Choice

Over the past two decades, labels such as the Nutrition Facts Panel on packaged foods, calorie counts on national restaurant menus, front-of-pack labels encouraging healthier eating, and “low-sodium” or “fat-free” identifiers have been developed in order to promote healthier choices. But do they work?

A new Food-PRICE systematic review and meta-analysis of interventional studies, led by researchers  and published online, assessed the effectiveness of multiple types of food labels. The researchers found that these approaches can impact some targets, but not others, for both consumer and industry behavior. The 60 interventional studies reviewed were comprised of two million unique observations, including consumer reported dietary intakes, purchases, and sales receipts, and were published between 1990 and 2014.

“Many old and new food policies focus on labeling, whether on food packages or restaurant menus. Remarkably, the effectiveness of these labels, whether for changing consumers’ choices or industry product formulations, has not been clear,” said senior corresponding author. “Our findings provide new evidence on what might work, and what might not, when implementing food labeling.”

In a pooled analysis of studies that included food labeling on menus, product packaging, or other point-of-purchase materials such as placards on supermarket shelves, the researchers found that labeling reduced consumers’ intake of:

- Calories by 6.6 percent.
- Total fat by 10.6 percent.
- Other unhealthy food options by 13 percent.

Labeling also increased consumers’ vegetable consumption by 13.5 percent.

In contrast, labeling did not significantly impact consumer intakes of other targets such as total carbohydrate, total protein, saturated fat, fruits, whole grains, or other healthy options.

When industry responses were evaluated, the researchers found that labeling led to reductions of both trans fat and sodium in packaged foods by 64.3 percent and 8.9 percent, respectively.  However, no significant effects of labeling were identified for industry formulations of total calories, saturated fat, dietary fiber, other healthy components (e.g., protein and unsaturated fat), or other unhealthy components (e.g., total fat, sugar, and dietary cholesterol), although relatively few studies evaluated these endpoints.

“For industry responses, it’s interesting that the two altered components–trans fat and sodium–are additives,” said a researcher. “This suggests that industry may be more readily able to alter additives, as opposed to naturally occurring ingredients such as fat or calories, in response to labeling. It will be interesting to see whether this will translate to added sugar, newly added to the Nutrition Facts Panel on food labels in the United States.”

The researchers also examined the effects of label type, placement, and other characteristics. No consistent differential effects were found by label placements (menu, package, other point-of-purchase), label types (e.g., traffic light, nutrient content), type of labeled products, whether labeling was voluntary or mandatory, or several other factors. The researchers concluded that this suggests that the general presence or absence of information may be more relevant to consumers and industry than the specific type of label.

Limitations were noted. While all studies were interventional, many were non-randomized.  Restaurant labeling studies often assessed consumer effects for a single meal, rather than long-term effects. Too few studies evaluated obesity or metabolic risk factors to draw any meaningful conclusions on the effects of labeling on health outcomes. The authors also noted that the studies included in the review were heterogeneous, due to the nature of interventions.

However, by merging findings from 60 interventional studies, the researchers were able to evaluate differences in both consumer and industry responses across 111 intervention arms in 11 countries across four continents. The studies were conducted in the United States/Canada, Europe/Australia, and Asia, and the majority included both genders; most evaluated adults. Most studies evaluated specific meals or products. The findings were centrally pooled in a meta-analysis. Analyses were completed in 2017.

Eating Without Gaining Weight Might Now Be Possible!

There will be many like me, foodies, who love to eat their heart's content and still not gain a pound. Some may say, wishful thinking, why not? as soon, it may happen, thanks to genetic studies that are happening all over the world. Soon, we’ll be able to find out. Researchers  have identified a gene called RCANI, the inhibition of which could allow a person to eat as much as they want without getting fat.

The research reports, was based on the understanding that increasing non‐shivering thermogenesis (NST), which expends calories as heat rather than storing them as fat, is a well-championed way to combat obesity and metabolic disease. However, certain innate mechanisms constrain the capacity for NST. Regulator of Calcineurin 1 (RCAN1), one such gene, suppresses two distinctly different mechanisms of non‐shivering thermogenesis (NST).

After conducting the study on mice, the researchers found: Mice deficient for RCAN1 have an elevated metabolic rate and are resistant to diet‐induced obesity.
It is hoped that inhibiting this gene in humans could lead to similar results and help tackle obesity.
As reported , a Prof. who led the study explained that they looked at a variety of different diets with various time spans from eight weeks to almost six months, and observed health improvements in all cases where there was an absence of the RCAN1 gene.

We know a lot of people struggle to lose weight or even control their weight for a number of different reasons. The findings in this study could mean developing a pill which would target the function of RCAN1 and may result in weight loss.
Inhibiting the gene could convert white fat to healthier brown fat in humans, eradicating many health problems in them.

"In light of our results, the drugs we are developing to target RCAN1 would burn more calories while people are resting. It means the body would store less fat without the need for a person to reduce food consumption or exercise more," the Prof. added.

Simple and Quick Health Hacks

We all want to be healthier, but not all of us want to stick in miles of legwork to be healthier. We get it, lifestyle changes are hard work and, with the rewards so far in the distances, it can be easy to ask ourselves if it’s even worth the effort. But, what if we could be healthier in no time at all? Would it be worth it then? Of course it would be! All we need to do is follow these instant health upgrades, and we’ll be on the road to healthy living in no time at all.
1. Add a Dash of Cinnamon to Your Coffee
Healthy Living
According to diabetes study, a mere half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day can set your blood sugar, LDL cholesterol. And triglyceride levels straight. Furthermore, if you swap out your cream and sugar for cinnamon, you’ll be cutting back on at least 70-80 calories per 8-ounce serving. Don’t worry, your coffee will taste just as good, if not better.
2. Turn up the Heat – on Your Lunch
Spicy food might make you sweat and cry, but make no mistake, the heat does wonders for your body. A study found that capsaicin, the compound in peppers that induces the spicy sensation, increases the calcium in your body. There’s also a widely-held belief that capsaicin speeds up weight loss via boosted metabolic function, but this is yet to be proven.
3. Start Brushing Your Teeth with Coconut Oil
Fluoride, artificial sweeteners, diethanolamine – yes, our everyday toothpaste is full of potentially harmful ingredients. Swap your toothpaste for coconut oil, which has all the same cleaning properties as a normal tube of Colgate, but none of the harmful ingredients.
4. Have Sex
Getting busy has been proven to decrease stress, blood pressure, and the chances of getting prostate cancer. So spark things up between the sheets as often as possible.
5. Eat White-Fleshed Produce
We are always told to eat our fruit and vegetables, but we are never told which ones. However, being selective in what you eat can have huge effects. For example, eating white-fleshed produce – apples, pears, cucumbers, and cauliflower – can, according to the experts, cut your risk of a stroke by up to 10%.
6. Live by the 20-20-20 Rule
Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something that is 20 feet away. According to the Optometrists, it’s a proven method for reducing eye strain – especially if you’re glued to a screen for 8 hours each day.
7. Wash Your Hands
Look at the person to your left and then look at the person to your right. One of them didn’t wash their hands after their last visit to the bathroom. Yes, according to a study, only 66% of Americans wash their hands after going to the bathroom. Considering the fact that the average bathroom contains 200,000 germs, a sure fire way to stay healthier is to wash your hands.
8. Stand Up
If you’re chained to a desk for 8 hours a day, you should stand up for one minute every half hour. Research suggests that doing this will slash your risk of developing heart disease and diabetes.
9. Cut Back on the Ibuprofen
It’s second nature to reach for the ibuprofen when you’re in pain, but you really shouldn’t as it has been shown to increase the risk of a heart attack by up to 50%. If you’re in pain and have no need to reduce inflammation, which is what ibuprofen does, reach for acetaminophen instead (e.g. Tylenol).
10. Add Lemon to Your Water
Lemons are a great source of potassium nitrate, a nutrient that has been proven to reduce high blood pressure and increase your body’s ability to process calcium. It also helps to decrease your chances of getting kidney stones.
11. Quit Smoking
This is easier said than done, we know. However, the first step (throwing your packet in the nearest trash can – takes mere seconds and it will immediately set you on the path to a healthier you.

ELIMINATE WHEAT FROM YOUR DIET TO IMPROVE YOUR HEART HEALTH

A renowned cardiologist explains how eliminating wheat can IMPROVE your health.

Cardiologist William Davis, MD, started his career repairing damaged hearts through angioplasty and bypass surgeries.

“That’s what I was trained to do, and at first, that’s what I wanted to do,” he explains. But when his own mother died of a heart attack in 1995, despite receiving the best cardiac care, he was forced to face nagging concerns about his profession.

"I’d fix a patient’s heart, only to see him come back with the same problems. It was just a band-aid, with no effort to identify the cause of the disease.”

So he moved his practice toward highly uncharted medical territory
– prevention – and spent the next 15 years examining the causes of heart disease in his patients.

The resulting discoveries are revealed in "Wheat Belly", his New York Times best-selling book, which attributes many of our physical problems, including heart disease, diabetes and obesity, to our consumption of wheat. Eliminating wheat can “transform our lives.”

What is a “Wheat Belly”?
Wheat  raises your blood sugar dramatically. In fact, two slices of wheat bread raise your blood sugar more than a Snickers bar.

"When my patients give up wheat,  weight loss was substantial, especially from the abdomen. People can lose several inches in the first month."

You make connections between wheat and a host of other health problems.

Eighty percent of my patients had diabetes or pre-diabetes.

I knew that wheat spiked blood sugar more than almost anything else, so I said,  “Let’s remove wheat from your diet and see what happens to your blood sugar.” They’d come back 3 to 6 months later, and their blood sugar would be dramatically reduced.
But they also had all these other reactions:
“I removed wheat and I lost 38 pounds.” Or, “my asthma got so much better, I threw away two of my inhalers.”
Or “the migraine headaches I’ve had every day for 20 years stopped within three days.” “My acid reflux is now gone.”
“My IBS is better, my ulcerative colitis, my rheumatoid arthritis, my mood, my sleep . . .” and so on, and so on".

When you look at the makeup of wheat, Amylopectin A, a chemical unique to wheat, is an incredible trigger of small LDL particles in the blood – the number one cause of heart disease.

When wheat is removed from the diet, these small LDL levels plummet by 80 and 90 percent.

Wheat contains high levels of Gliadin, a protein that actually stimulates appetite. Eating wheat increases the average person’s calorie intake by 400 calories a day.

Gliadin also has opiate-like properties which makes it "addictive".
Food scientists have known this for almost 20 years.

Is eating a wheat-free diet the same as a gluten-free diet?
Gluten is just one component of wheat.
If we took the gluten out of it, wheat will still be bad since it will still have the Gliadin and the Amylopectin A, as well as several other undesirable components.

Gluten-free products  are made with 4 basic ingredients: corn starch, rice starch, tapioca starch or potato starch.
And those 4 dried, powdered starches are some of the  foods that raise blood sugar even higher.

I encourage people to return to REAL food:
Fruits
Vegetables
and nuts and seeds,  Unpasteurized cheese ,
Eggs and meats

Wheat really changed in the 70s and 80s due to a series of techniques used to increase yield, including hybridization. It was bred to be shorter and sturdier and also to have more Gliadin, (a potent appetite stimulant)

The wheat we eat today is not the wheat that was eaten 100 years ago.

If you stop eating breads/pasta/chapatis every day, and start eating rice with chicken and vegetables, you still lose weight because rice doesn’t raise blood sugar as high as wheat, and it also doesn’t have the aAmylopectin A or the Gliadin that stimulates appetite. You won’t have the same increase in calorie intake that wheat causes.

That’s part of the reason why foreign cultures that don’t consume wheat tend to be slenderer and healthier.

Everyone should stop eating wheat. This is the closest I know of to something that will transform your life."

Here's How Diet Foods May Make You Gain Weight

Are you on a strict diet but still can’t seem to achieve any weight loss? Believe it or not, weight loss is a complex process. In most cases it is never achievable if the fine balance between calories consumed and burned is not realised. Another factor severely affecting your weight loss journey is the kind of food that you include in your diet. If you don’t have a set routine of your meal times, or don’t meet your regular nutritional requirements, all your efforts will eventually go down the drain.

Unfortunately, the reality of diet foods seems pretty grim. It has been a hot topic of debate among health experts and fitness enthusiasts for a long time now. If you happen to seek professional help with respect to your diet plan, in most cases you will be asked to steer clear of diet products. One of the biggest problems with diet foods is empty calories. While you munch on low-fat cookies or the wholegrain variant of a regular snack, you simply don’t realise that you are consuming hidden sugar in disguise. Then there are artificial flavourings, sweetening agents and a whole lot of things added to make a supposed ‘diet’ product more enjoyable, palatable and ‘delicious’. Diet food consumption can therefore put you in a vicious cycle of regaining all the weight that you once lost.

Diet foods can be low in fat, but many of these are often laden with sugar. Experts from the University of Georgia experimented with mice module to analyse the effect of a diet high in sugar and low in fat. It was found that these mice had an increased body fat mass as compared to rats who were on a balanced diet.

"Most so-called diet products containing low or no fat have an increased amount of sugar and are camouflaged under fancy names, giving the impression that they are healthy, but the reality is that those foods may damage the liver and lead to obesity as well," said principal investigator Krzysztof Czaja, reported by PTI.

According to Shilpa Arora ND, a renowned Health Practitioner, Nutritionist and certified Macrobiotic Health Coach, "Diet foods don't necessarily lead to weight gain. One should do thorough research and read labels to know what is added in a product. Items high in sugar are always harmful to health. Sugar should always be taken from a natural source, like fruits. A balanced diet is always recommended to lead a healthy life".

Diet colas and energy drinks, for example, are loaded with sugar and provide empty calories. Experts found that the calorie consumption of the rats on a high-sugar, low-fat diet was almost equal to the ones who were on a normal diet. The former group was consuming empty calories that generated body fat at double the rate as compared to the other group of rats. Both the low-fat, high-sugar and high-fat, high-sugar groups displayed an increase in liver fat and significant increases in body weight and body fat when compared to the balanced diet group. Liver fat accumulation was significant in the high-sugar, low-fat group.

The study was published in the journal Physiology & Behavior and concluded that unbalanced diets harm the gut microbiome and its bacterial diversity. Low-fat, high-sugar diets may often encourage gut bacteria linked to liver damage.
