Reasons why some people feel colder or hotter than others

Why some people feel colder or hotter than other people

Have you ever come across people who constantly complain about feeling too hot or too cold, while you sat there feeling the complete opposite? Probably yes! At home or at the office, there's always this one person expressing dissatisfaction about the thermostat settings, about the air conditioner being too low or too high and so on.

The average normal body temperature is generally said to be 98.6°F (37°C). What is important to understand is that body temperatures may vary from person to person depending on their age, activity and the time of the day. While all humans are warm blooded and can regulate their body temperatures, there are some people who may feel colder or hotter than other individuals. This could be due to several factors. Let us take a look at them.

Age

As compared to younger adults, older people are unable to regulate their body temperatures. This is because as we age, our metabolism starts to slow down. A slower metabolism can then cause the body temperature to drop, which is why older people are more prone to hypothermia and must keep themselves well covered at all times. Leading a sedentary life may also give rise to such problems.

Sex

The female body has less muscle mass as compared to men which is why it generates a lesser amount of heat from the skin pores, making them feel colder than the men, even with the same room temperature, explains Dr. Rob Danoff, a physician from Philadelphia.

However, when it comes to menopausal, middle-aged women, they may feel warmer than their male counterparts. This is not because they develop muscle mass but because they experience certain hormonal changes, as per the expert.

Why size matters

As per experts, body size can also be one of the reasons why some people feel hotter or colder than others. The larger the body, the greater the heat sink, hence leading to a longer time to cool down, says Ollie Jay, a researcher of physiology at the University of Sydney.

Body fat

Studies have shown people who have a larger amount of fat in the body may feel warmer than those who are leaner. It is because the extra fat is said to heat up the body, since it acts like an extra layer of clothing.

However, in some circumstances, obese and overweight people may feel colder than people who have normal weight. This has to do with the function of the circulatory system. That said, when you feel hot, the blood vessels widen, which allows the blood to flow through them and reach the skin, from where the excess heat is excreted. But since subcutaneous fat traps heat, it keeps the core warm, while cooling down the skin surface. This according to Catherine O’Brien, a research physiologist with the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, may result in obese people feeling colder than others.

Medical conditions

Certain medical conditions may also affect people's body temperature.

For instance, hypothyroidism, which is also known as underactive thyroid, is when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones that helps regulate important bodily functions like metabolism, energy levels and so on, it could lead to making a person feel colder.

Raynaud’s disease is a condition that causes certain parts of the body such as the toes and the fingers to feel cold and numb, especially in cold temperatures or due to stress. In this, small arteries become narrower, limiting the flow of the blood to affected areas.

Severity of depression can increase chances of heart disease and stroke

A new research suggests that the severity of a person's depression may increase their odds of having heart disease or stroke. The results of the study were published in the journal of the American Heart Association.

"Cardiovascular diseases are impacted by and related to a variety of aspects of health and well-being including mental health," said study author.

"We found that the level of depression was strongly tied to living with heart disease and stroke, even after accounting for other factors that could impact risk, including the American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7 and variables of age, income, education, sex,,  race, and ethnicity."

Researchers examined the connection between depression and non-fatal heart diseases such as heart failure, coronary heart disease, angina, heart attack or stroke in US adults age 20 years and older. Using depression questionnaires completed in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), more than 11,000 adults diagnosed with depression were identified.

This represents 231 million adults in the general population. Of these, about 1,200 people (translated to 20 million in the general population) said they had been diagnosed with heart disease or stroke. An analysis to quantify the link for depression and non-fatal heart disease and stroke found that the odds increased by 24 percent with each additional level increase of depression-mild, moderate, moderately severe or severe.

"The implications of such an increase are vast," he said. "By understanding the relationship and degree of impact we can properly identify, prevent, treat and create policies and strategies to help decrease cardiovascular diseases and improve lives by tackling mental health and heart disease together." More studies are needed to determine if depression causes cardiovascular disease or cardiovascular disease causes depression, according to the authors.

Simple and Quick Health Hacks

We all want to be healthier, but not all of us want to stick in miles of legwork to be healthier. We get it, lifestyle changes are hard work and, with the rewards so far in the distances, it can be easy to ask ourselves if it’s even worth the effort. But, what if we could be healthier in no time at all? Would it be worth it then? Of course it would be! All we need to do is follow these instant health upgrades, and we’ll be on the road to healthy living in no time at all.
1. Add a Dash of Cinnamon to Your Coffee
Healthy Living
According to diabetes study, a mere half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day can set your blood sugar, LDL cholesterol. And triglyceride levels straight. Furthermore, if you swap out your cream and sugar for cinnamon, you’ll be cutting back on at least 70-80 calories per 8-ounce serving. Don’t worry, your coffee will taste just as good, if not better.
2. Turn up the Heat – on Your Lunch
Spicy food might make you sweat and cry, but make no mistake, the heat does wonders for your body. A study found that capsaicin, the compound in peppers that induces the spicy sensation, increases the calcium in your body. There’s also a widely-held belief that capsaicin speeds up weight loss via boosted metabolic function, but this is yet to be proven.
3. Start Brushing Your Teeth with Coconut Oil
Fluoride, artificial sweeteners, diethanolamine – yes, our everyday toothpaste is full of potentially harmful ingredients. Swap your toothpaste for coconut oil, which has all the same cleaning properties as a normal tube of Colgate, but none of the harmful ingredients.
4. Have Sex
Getting busy has been proven to decrease stress, blood pressure, and the chances of getting prostate cancer. So spark things up between the sheets as often as possible.
5. Eat White-Fleshed Produce
We are always told to eat our fruit and vegetables, but we are never told which ones. However, being selective in what you eat can have huge effects. For example, eating white-fleshed produce – apples, pears, cucumbers, and cauliflower – can, according to the experts, cut your risk of a stroke by up to 10%.
6. Live by the 20-20-20 Rule
Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something that is 20 feet away. According to the Optometrists, it’s a proven method for reducing eye strain – especially if you’re glued to a screen for 8 hours each day.
7. Wash Your Hands
Look at the person to your left and then look at the person to your right. One of them didn’t wash their hands after their last visit to the bathroom. Yes, according to a study, only 66% of Americans wash their hands after going to the bathroom. Considering the fact that the average bathroom contains 200,000 germs, a sure fire way to stay healthier is to wash your hands.
8. Stand Up
If you’re chained to a desk for 8 hours a day, you should stand up for one minute every half hour. Research suggests that doing this will slash your risk of developing heart disease and diabetes.
9. Cut Back on the Ibuprofen
It’s second nature to reach for the ibuprofen when you’re in pain, but you really shouldn’t as it has been shown to increase the risk of a heart attack by up to 50%. If you’re in pain and have no need to reduce inflammation, which is what ibuprofen does, reach for acetaminophen instead (e.g. Tylenol).
10. Add Lemon to Your Water
Lemons are a great source of potassium nitrate, a nutrient that has been proven to reduce high blood pressure and increase your body’s ability to process calcium. It also helps to decrease your chances of getting kidney stones.
11. Quit Smoking
This is easier said than done, we know. However, the first step (throwing your packet in the nearest trash can – takes mere seconds and it will immediately set you on the path to a healthier you.
