Reasons why some people feel colder or hotter than others

Why some people feel colder or hotter than other people

Have you ever come across people who constantly complain about feeling too hot or too cold, while you sat there feeling the complete opposite? Probably yes! At home or at the office, there's always this one person expressing dissatisfaction about the thermostat settings, about the air conditioner being too low or too high and so on.

The average normal body temperature is generally said to be 98.6°F (37°C). What is important to understand is that body temperatures may vary from person to person depending on their age, activity and the time of the day. While all humans are warm blooded and can regulate their body temperatures, there are some people who may feel colder or hotter than other individuals. This could be due to several factors. Let us take a look at them.

Age

As compared to younger adults, older people are unable to regulate their body temperatures. This is because as we age, our metabolism starts to slow down. A slower metabolism can then cause the body temperature to drop, which is why older people are more prone to hypothermia and must keep themselves well covered at all times. Leading a sedentary life may also give rise to such problems.

Sex

The female body has less muscle mass as compared to men which is why it generates a lesser amount of heat from the skin pores, making them feel colder than the men, even with the same room temperature, explains Dr. Rob Danoff, a physician from Philadelphia.

However, when it comes to menopausal, middle-aged women, they may feel warmer than their male counterparts. This is not because they develop muscle mass but because they experience certain hormonal changes, as per the expert.

Why size matters

As per experts, body size can also be one of the reasons why some people feel hotter or colder than others. The larger the body, the greater the heat sink, hence leading to a longer time to cool down, says Ollie Jay, a researcher of physiology at the University of Sydney.

Body fat

Studies have shown people who have a larger amount of fat in the body may feel warmer than those who are leaner. It is because the extra fat is said to heat up the body, since it acts like an extra layer of clothing.

However, in some circumstances, obese and overweight people may feel colder than people who have normal weight. This has to do with the function of the circulatory system. That said, when you feel hot, the blood vessels widen, which allows the blood to flow through them and reach the skin, from where the excess heat is excreted. But since subcutaneous fat traps heat, it keeps the core warm, while cooling down the skin surface. This according to Catherine O’Brien, a research physiologist with the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, may result in obese people feeling colder than others.

Medical conditions

Certain medical conditions may also affect people's body temperature.

For instance, hypothyroidism, which is also known as underactive thyroid, is when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones that helps regulate important bodily functions like metabolism, energy levels and so on, it could lead to making a person feel colder.

Raynaud’s disease is a condition that causes certain parts of the body such as the toes and the fingers to feel cold and numb, especially in cold temperatures or due to stress. In this, small arteries become narrower, limiting the flow of the blood to affected areas.

Ketone supplements can lower blood sugar levels

Ketone supplements are small dietary doses of a chemical naturally produced by the liver from body fat during periods of low food intake, and a new study says these may lower blood sugar levels in diabetics. The study, published in the Journal of Physiology, showed that a ketone ester supplement can lower blood sugar levels.

According to the researchers, including those from the University of British Columbia in Canada, the study presents a potential future method to control spikes in blood sugar experienced by diabetics. The scientists demonstrated that a single drink of ketone ester enables better control of blood sugar by reducing spikes in sugar levels.

As part of the study, 20 healthy individuals consumed the ketone monoester supplement, or a placebo after a 10-hour fast. The participants then consumed a drink containing 75 grams of sugar 30 minutes later.

Blood samples were collected from the participants every 15-30 minutes throughout the entire 2.5 hours protocol, the researchers said. They analysed the samples for glucose, lipids, and hormones. According to the study, the blood sugar spike was reduced on the day that the individuals had consumed the ketone drink.

However, the scientists cautioned that more research is required to know whether the findings apply to people with diabetes and obesity since the current study was conducted with healthy young individuals.

Effect of obesity on non-surgical periodontal care

A new study explores how the most common non-communicable diseases, Obesity and gum (periodontal) might be related to each other. It also highlights the effect of obesity on non-surgical periodontal care.

The connection between obesity and gum disease isn't as simple as cause-and-effect, said Andres Pinto, co-author of the study at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. Instead, the relationship centers on what both diseases have in common: inflammation.

Examining a large number of existing studies, researchers found that data showing increased body mass index, waist circumference and percentage of body fat to be associated with an increased risk to develop gum disease, also known as periodontitis.

Most studies analysed data from population subsets at one point in time, as opposed to studying the same population over a longer period. They concluded that changes in body chemistry affect metabolism, which, in turn, causes inflammation--something present in both maladies. "Periodontal disease occurs in patients more susceptible to inflammation--who are also more susceptible to obesity," Pinto said.

"This information can inform how health-care professionals plan treatments for patients suffering from obesity and/or gum disease." "Oral health-care professionals need to be aware of the complexity of obesity to counsel their patients about the importance of appropriate body weight and maintaining good oral hygiene," he added. Pinto said further research on the relationship between gum disease and obesity is needed, noting there is, at this point, limited evidence to recommend changes in treatment planning.

"There is a thought, from the clinical perspective, that if you treat one of the issues, it may impact the other," he said. "This is a big question. For example, if we treat obesity successfully, will this impact periodontal disease to the point of being of clinical relevance compared to control the population. The jury is still out given the paucity of controlled, well designed, clinical trials on this issue."

Weight loss: Try this Japanese morning banana diet to lose weight faster!

Weight watchers, never skip breakfast!

Breakfast is not just one of the most important meals of the day but also something you should not skip if you want to shed the kilos. However, it can be hard to find an easy breakfast option that fills you up, without making you consume more calories than you want to.

Finding it difficult to lose weight?

If you are confused reading about all these fad diets, here is one which promises results by making one simple alteration in your meals! By simply suggesting you fill up on raw bananas as your breakfast, this Japanese diet plan promises effective weight loss in very little time!

What is the diet about?

Also known as the 'Asa Banana diet', this diet plan gained immense popularity in Japan, where the success of the diet plan made the grocers run out of the fruit in a short time!
The morning banana diet is a simple plan that banks on the nutrient-rich properties of bananas to aid rapid weight loss. As per the diet, a person can only eat bananas for breakfast and the diet allows you to eat anything else for lunch, dinner, and snack-time. The diet promotes people from losing momentum in their weight loss journey. As a whole, the diet also preaches people to follow some lifestyle alterations and practice mindfulness. People are not allowed to eat anything post 8 pm, stay away from beverages other than water.

Making lifestyle modifications

Apart from this, the morning banana diet does not state exercise as a requirement. However, light exercise spells can speed up results.

Does the diet really work?

While it is a known fact that bananas, for one are loaded with digestive enzymes that fuel up the system, eating bananas in the morning can recharge the metabolism, satiate you to an extent, thereby stopping you from overeating. They are also a good source of potassium, and fiber which regulates body fat, fight toxins and energize the body.
The morning banana diet plan is certainly different from many other fad diets as it incorporates a number of other nutrition principles like eating last meal well before bedtime, relying on our body clocks to identify and satisfy hunger, discouraging the consumption of additional alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.

A word of caution

However, do remember that bananas are also loaded with sugar, which can not be healthy in the long run. At best, it's a fad diet that can guarantee temporary results and make a difference in the waistline. For better health, a healthy mix of diet and workout is advised.
