Paralyzed Man Walks Again Thanks to Nose

In 2010, Darek Fidyka was attacked and stabbed multiple times. The attacker severed his spine, rendering him paralyzed from the chest down, but now, thanks to a new and revolutionary procedure, Darek can walk again!
The operation involved taking special cells from the patient’s nose, called “Olfactory Bulbs.” These bulbs are the only part of the human body able to regrow nerves, due to the nose’ constant exposure to chemicals that might damage it. Without such an ability, humans would lose their sense of smell very early in life. The idea of harnessing that ability and applying it to other major nerve centers has been discussed by doctors at length, and tests have shown that paralyzed rats and dogs regained their mobility thanks to such treatment.
After 2 years in a wheelchair, Darek was selected and went through this surgery, which involved 100 microinjections into the injured area. After the procedure, Darek went through physical therapy five times a day but showed no response. At the third month, though, he noticed that he was gaining muscle again in his legs. By the sixth month, Darek was able to take a few steps on his own, and now he is able to walk with a walking frame. Darek reports that he also started gaining some control over his bowels, bladder and even some sexual control.
Darek was quoted saying: “I think it's realistic that one day I will become independent.”
This story brings much hope to hundreds of thousands of paralyzed men, women and children who might be able to walk again, and sooner than they think!

dehydration infographicDrinking water is becoming more scarce these days. People have replaced them with juices, sodas and energy drinks, creating a host of problems for a body that was made to drink pure water. Most people don't realize they are constantly dehydrated, even if just a little, and the body pays a hefty price for it. Hydration is important, and here's why.

The Best Way to Keep a Fly Away.

Summer is nearly here, and along with the sunshine and heat it also brings with it droves of flies - some of the most annoying and harmful of insects. They lay eggs in food and spoil it as well as spreading disease. And don't forget they're annoying!

If you have a fly problem at home or even on a nature walk, here is what you do:

1. You'll need: plastic bags, water and a few coins (The money won't buy you a fly repellent, but will help you build one).

2. Fill the bag with water.

3. Place 4-6 coins in every bag.

4. Tie off the bag and hang it in an infested area.

Sounds like hocus pocus? Well, there is actually a fascinating scientific explanation for this method.

The millions of molecules in the water create a special prism effect, meaning they break the light in a very special way. When you add the coins, a cumulating effect of light being broken is randomly enhanced.

Flies have a very special way of seeing. Their eyes are made of thousands of identical lenses, meaning they see thousands of reflections of the same image.

For a fly, that simple bag of water looks like lots of disco balls reflecting light and movement in a way that causes them to be dizzy. Under such conditions, they end up being distracted all the time and feeling vulnerable to predators.

Flies serve as food for a number of other animals, and flies who feel vulnerable won't stick around, because it feels too dangerous.

Not only does this method work, it is also low-cost and harmless, unlike chemicals that can poison our food, air and water. It's ironic how sometimes the best solutions are also the simplest ones!

Indian-origin scientist develops new tool for cancer diagnosis

Rohit Bhargava, an IIT-Delhi graduate and now with University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has developed stainless staining that provides a new tool for clinicians and researchers for better diagnosis of cancer.

Till date, prepared biopsy samples are stained and examined under a light microscope.

Using infrared spectroscopic imaging for microscopy, Bhargava has reported the development of label-free chemical imaging to provide the same information as molecular stains.

Instead of using stains, the new method measures the chemical constitution of cells and tissues directly.

The outcome is that that molecular stains can be reproduced without staining the tissue but by using the intrinsic molecular contrast of the tissue and computation.

The study relies on computation instead of staining to provide biopsy images.

"Infrared and optical imaging seemed to be distinct modes for getting important data in pathology. This study shows a close link between the two, allowing the user to choose the best method to address their needs," Bhargava commented in a university statement.

Thus, any sample can be stained for desired stains without material cost, time or effort while leaving precious tissue pristine for downstream analyses.

Another use of the approach can be in the analysis of small amounts of samples, for example from a thin needle biopsy.

"The development of this approach promises to have immediate and long-term impact in changing pathology to a multiplexed molecular science -- in both research and clinical practice," the authors noted.

Indian-American scientist finds new way for kidney diagnosis

In a major success, an Indian-American scientist and his colleague have identified a new, less-invasive method to provide diagnostic information on kidney disease and its severity.

They used an optical probe and Raman spectroscopy to differentiate between healthy and diseased kidneys.

"There are some molecules that must be responsible for these different Raman signals, but we don't need to know what those molecules may be," said Chandra Mohan, professor at University of Houston in the US.

"As long as there's a difference in the signal, that's good enough -- you can easily differentiate between a diseased kidney's Raman signal and a healthy kidney's Raman signal," Mohan said.

Apart from the potential side effects, the number of renal biopsies a patient can undergo is limited because of damage to the kidney tissue.

For the study, Mohan and his colleague Wei-Chuan Shih, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, relied upon the fact that a healthy kidney and a diseased kidney produce different Raman signals.

"Raman spectroscopy provides molecular fingerprints that enable non-invasive or minimal invasive and label-free detection for the quantification of subtle molecular changes," Mohan and Shih said.
"By adapting multivariate analysis to Raman spectroscopy, we have successfully differentiated between the diseased and the non-diseased with up to 100 percent accuracy, and among the severely diseased, the mildly diseased and the healthy with up to 98 percent accuracy," concluded Mohan and Shih.

The study was outlined in the Journal of Biophotonics.
