New Study Suggests an Easy Method To Get a Better Memory

Scientists may have discovered a new way of training and improving our memory and it's nothing like you might expect. It doesn't require you to write in journals, solve sudoku or crossword puzzles or exercise, it does require, however, for you to try new things and hope for the best, and this theory is based on a chemical found in your brain called dopamine. What do we mean? To find out more about this method, just continue reading.

What is dopamine and why is it important for my memory?

Neurotransmitters are the on and off switches of our brain, and the more scientists learn about then, the better we understand how our brains work and what causes anything from forgetfulness to neurological problems to mental illness. One of the 'lead actors' in our brains is dopamine, a neurotransmitter produced in our brains that has been time and time again linked to motivation and anticipation, as its levels increase when you expect a reward, making you feel bliss and joy.
Like when you're trying hard to open a jar of pickles, and then, after countless struggles with the lid, you finally succeed and get a crunchy pickle that you could swear somehow tastes much better than an ordinary pickle.
Low levels of dopamine, on the other hand, have been time and time linked to mental illness and depression, with many treatments working towards increasing the levels of this neurotransmitter in the brain. Okay, but what about memories, how does dopamine influence those?
Research links the formation of episodic memories with high dopamine levels, so the lack of this hormone in the brain may be the culprit behind bad memory and even memory disorders like Alzheimer’s and dementia. And though there are medical treatments that can increase the amount of dopamine in the brain, scientists are currently looking into games and other less invasive treatments that train your memory by increasing your dopamine levels. We will discuss one of such treatments below.

A recent study showed how an unexpected reward in a computer game caused the formation of memories.

In this study, the researchers hypothesized that an unexpected big win in the game will make them remember pictures better, as it is known that dopamine levels rise the most in the presence of unexpected results. The more surprising and thrilling the victory, the believed, the more likely a person should be able to remember something.

To test how well the participants remembered the pictures, they asked almost 300 participants to select the pictures secretly associated with a reward from a selection of similar pictures. They tested them twice, first 5 minutes after the game, and then once more 24 hours later to see if the memories were lasting.

The study found that, indeed, the participants managed to form more vivid memories when they’ve seen an unexpected good outcome, and the higher the risk of failure, the more likely were the participants to remember. The researchers believe that this game can train the players’ memory and make it better long term, and they plan to test if people with mental or physical conditions associated with low production of dopamine will behave the same way healthy participants do.

In the meantime, it might be useful for you to know that you don’t have to actually play this specific game to improve your memory. Any unexpected positive reward, like finding a new favorite coffee shop, accidentally stumbling upon a friend while grocery shopping, or even winning in a card game you just learned will all improve your memory and make you remember seemingly ordinary events more vividly and fondly.

Most definitely, this research motivates us to try new things, visit new places and surprise yourself and others more often.

Simple home test could predict cancer and malaria

  • Scientists are developing new paper strips that detect cancer and malaria
  • Strips, which cost about 50 cents, require just a drop of blood
  • Once applied, the test can be sent to a lab where results are read
  • Means people would only need to see a doctor if the results were positive
  • Tests can detect any disease for which the body produces antibodies
  • Clinical trials should start within 3 years, scientists in Ohio hope

Within a few years testing cancer could be as simple as testing for diabetes.

The scientist feels that the test could be tailored to detect any disease, for which the human body produces antibodies, including ovarian cancer and cancer of the large intestine. This patent pending technology would help those people most, who don't have a regular access to the doctor and can't afford regular visits.

The technology uses wax to ink to trace the outline of channels and reservoirs on the paper. To get tested, all that a person has to do is put a drop of blood on the strip, fold it in half and mail it to the lab for testing.

The finding are published in the Journal of American Chemical Society.

The Best Way to Keep a Fly Away.

Summer is nearly here, and along with the sunshine and heat it also brings with it droves of flies - some of the most annoying and harmful of insects. They lay eggs in food and spoil it as well as spreading disease. And don't forget they're annoying!

If you have a fly problem at home or even on a nature walk, here is what you do:

1. You'll need: plastic bags, water and a few coins (The money won't buy you a fly repellent, but will help you build one).

2. Fill the bag with water.

3. Place 4-6 coins in every bag.

4. Tie off the bag and hang it in an infested area.

Sounds like hocus pocus? Well, there is actually a fascinating scientific explanation for this method.

The millions of molecules in the water create a special prism effect, meaning they break the light in a very special way. When you add the coins, a cumulating effect of light being broken is randomly enhanced.

Flies have a very special way of seeing. Their eyes are made of thousands of identical lenses, meaning they see thousands of reflections of the same image.

For a fly, that simple bag of water looks like lots of disco balls reflecting light and movement in a way that causes them to be dizzy. Under such conditions, they end up being distracted all the time and feeling vulnerable to predators.

Flies serve as food for a number of other animals, and flies who feel vulnerable won't stick around, because it feels too dangerous.

Not only does this method work, it is also low-cost and harmless, unlike chemicals that can poison our food, air and water. It's ironic how sometimes the best solutions are also the simplest ones!

How To Lead An Easier Life With Osteoarthritis

Walking
If arthritis is making it harder for you to keep up with daily activities, there are many simple tools that can make your life easier. For walking, options range from specially designed shoe inserts called orthotics to braces, canes, crutches, and even walkers. Be sure to get these fitted by a health care professional. Even a simple cane that isn't the right height may do more harm than good.

Moving Inside the house
Make it easy to get around your home. Keep pathways clear and remove scatter rugs. Add extenders that convert doorknobs to levers, so you can open doors simply by pushing a handle up or down without twisting a knob. Use lamps that turn on and off with a tap to the base or sound-sensitive lamps that work with a clap of your hands. Switch adapters can make it easier to flip on regular lamps and lights.

In the Living Room
Sit in chairs that are easy to get in and out of. If your favorite chair is too low, consider adding risers that adjust its height. Get a remote control with large, easy-to-push buttons. And make sure there are plenty of light sources. Hunching over a book in dim light can strain your joints.

In the Kitchen
Kitchen utensils with padded or moulded handles are much easier to pick up and hold. An electric can opener and fixed jar opener can reduce strain. Using a wheeled cart or even two-handled pots and pans can make it safer to carry items across the room. Reachers -- rods with grasping devices on the end -- work well for grabbing lightweight items. But remember that the long pole makes heavy cans even heavier to lift.

Getting Dressed
Buy slip-on shoes and clothes that close in the front with large buttons, hooks, or Velcro. Button hooks and zipper pulls can help you get dressed. Better yet, buy loose clothes that slip over your head. Shoehorns and sock aids can make it easier to slip on socks and shoes and mean you won't have to bend over to reach your feet.

Using the Shower and Toilet
Installing grab bars in the bathroom is especially important if you have problems with balance. A waterproof tub seat can keep you steady in the shower. Consider a raised toilet seat as well. This will make it easier to get up and down.

At the Sink
You can find many gadgets to help turn water on and off if your faucet is hard to use. Rubber grips can make handles easier to turn and adapters can turn traditional knobs into easy-to-use levers. You can find tools for opening medicine bottles, working tweezers, spraying aerosol cans, and squeezing eye drops. To make brushing easier, make sure your toothbrush has a padded or easy-to-grasp handle.

At Work or in a Home Office
Set up your computer desk so that you're looking straight at your screen, your wrists aren't bent, and there's no strain on your back or legs. You may want a keyboard with extra-large keys if you have arthritis in your hands or fingers. Consider using a headset or earpiece so you don’t have to strain your muscles and joints by holding a phone to your ear. Use a stand to prop up materials when you read or type.

In the Car
Key turners, car door openers, and gas cap wrenches make it easier to use a car when you have arthritis. There are also more permanent fixes, like devices for holding on to the steering wheel. However, talk to an auto expert who specializes in disability adaptations before making changes that could affect the safety of your car.

In the Yard
When you're heading to the garden or working in the yard, look for tools with comfortable grips and handles. Replace old hoses with newer, lightweight ones, and consider a motorized hose reel. Use a gardening kneeler or seat that lets you work on the ground without stooping, or plant your flowers in a raised bed.

Get Advice
Sometimes a simple assistive device or a change in the way you do things can make daily tasks much easier when you have arthritis. Occupational therapists are trained to help you function at your best. Consulting an OT before purchasing new devices -- especially if they are expensive -- may help you sort the gimmicks from the lifesavers.
