Duct tape hacks

1) Make Your Shoes Warmer

Here is a handy trick for those cold months. You can use duct tape to make your boots warmer. In order to do so, all you have to do is just wrap a solid layer of duct tape around the insoles of the shoes (cheap insoles available in supermarkets can be likewise used to spare the original insoles of your shoes). The plastic surface of the duct tape will help seal the heat and reflect it to the soles of your feet, and you will feel much warmer wearing these DIY insoles.

2)  Hide a Spare Key or Other Valuables
With the help of duct tape, you can hide away valuables, such as keys, credit cards, etc., in the most inconspicuous places. No more hiding the spare house key under the doormat - simply stick it to a piece of duct tape like in the image above and attach the key somewhere unexpected, like under the seat of the patio bench, for example.

3) Conceal Unsightly Cables
It's terribly annoying when cables are dangling freely behind electronic devices, not to mention - dangerous, especially for pets and small children. To secure the cables and make sure they don't get pulled on accidentally, you can attach the wires with the help of a small piece of duct tape to the wall, floor, or even furniture, making them less visible and dangerous.

4)  Protect Floors From Being Scratched
Hardwood floors are so fragile - any little scratch can damage the topcoat, which introduces humidity mold and endangers the integrity of your floors. Of course, you can revarnish them here and there, but too many coats of varnish and constant refurbishing aren't good for your floors either, not to mention that it's quite expensive and troublesome.

So why not learn to prevent your floor from scuffing instead? Just attach a small piece of duct tape onto the bottom of the chair's legs and you're done, simple!

5) Patch Up a Wound Temporarily

This scenario happens way too often: you're messing around in the shed or garden, using sharp tools, and suddenly, you get a cut on your hand or arm that starts bleeding. If you don't have a bandage or band-aid near you, simply reach for the silver roll of duct tape and seal the wound to stop the bleeding. Needless to say, this is not a permanent solution, as you do need to clean, disinfect, and dress the wound properly afterward, but in a pinch, duct tape gets the job done, too.

8. Catch Insects

No need to purchase special sticky pads or rolls, or to buy expensive sprays laden with chemicals to get rid of the pests invading your home. All you will need is a piece of duct tape and a smidge of peanut butter. Fold the sides of a small piece of the duct tape so that you can handle it conveniently, and put a little amount of peanut butter in the middle of the tape.

Try not to disrupt the sticky surface if the tape, as this is exactly what will be trapping the bugs. Put these pieces underneath your kitchen cabinets, near the trashcan, and any other places in your home you see the pests. After just a few days, you'll find that the bugs have stuck to the tape and you'll have to throw the tape out and replace it if necessary.

You can also use the tape to trap flies - simply hang strips of tape from the ceiling and you have DIY flypaper.

9) Patch Up a Tent
Duct tape is a happy camper's best friend, as its multifunctionality comes very handy in a situation where you have to fit all your gear in a backpack. We already listed a few ways you can use duct tape while camping, but another way you can make use of the silver tape is by patching up a leaky tent. We typically even cover the areas with small openings with duct tape after setting up the tent to keep all the insects outside.

10) Create a Temporary Hem for Pants
Wearing pants that are too long is not very neat, that's certainly true, but it's also very uncomfortable, as you can step and even trip on the excessively long pants. Still, actually getting the pants tailored can be quite costly and can take a while. Luckily, there's also a quick solution, and it, of course, includes duct tape. Simply follow these steps:
Turn the pants inside out, put them on to see what you're doing, and roll them up evenly to the required length. Then, stick a few little pieces of duct tape on the hem, and you're done. You can machine wash these pants without worry, and they typically stay taped and hemmed for several months.

11) Banish Warts
Another neat trick you can do with duct tape is to get rid of warts. Simply stick a little piece of tape over the area and keep some on for at least a few weeks, regularly replacing with a fresh piece of tape. The tape will cut off any oxygen to the wart, and it will simply die off, and one day, you'll just find that the wart will peel off on its own as you remove the tape. Many people are convinced this is the best and least invasive way of getting rid of a wart, as pointed out by the American Academy of Dermatology.

12) Make an Arm Sling in an Emergency
Emergencies happen, and when they do and you have the knowledge to help someone, it's always a very pleasant feeling. If someone is suspected to have injured their arm, for example, you can use duct tape to stabilize the joint in the place of injury by wrapping the tape around the arm and then creating a makeshift sling. This should be more than enough to transport the person safely to the emergency unit.

13) Make Shoes Slip FreeIf you find that a pair of shoes you love is way too slippery, be it due to poor design or wear and tear, this tip is for you. Simply attach a piece of tape to the sole of the shoe, and this will instantly give it some extra grip. This will not only make the shoes more comfortable but also safer, as slippery shoes can be the cause of falls and leg injuries.

14) Remove Glue from Surfaces
Have you added a few stickers to your car window that you're starting to regret, but you still don't want to get rid of them because of the hideous glue residue they will leave behind? If that speaks to you, you need some duct tape and some window cleaner. After removing the sticker as best as you can, apply a piece of duct tape onto the surface with glue residue, be it wood, glass, or metal, and then pull.

Repeat a few times with a fresh piece of tape every time until little to no glue residue remains. The duct tape is so sticky that it typically removes the majority of the glue from surfaces, but to finish the job and give shine to the surface, wipe it down with a cloth dampened with some window cleaner as a finishing touch.

15) Remove a Splinter
The sticky surface of duct tape is so strong it is actually capable of pulling out even a very deep splinter from your skin in a matter of minutes. The procedure is as follows: first, clean and disinfect the area, then apply a piece of duct tape and wait for half an hour. After 30 minutes, pull on the tape, and as you do, the splinter will probably be pulled out in an instant. You will be able to see the splinter on the duct tape when you're done.

16) Protect Feet From Blisters
Who knew duct tape has so many medical uses? One more way you can use it is to prevent and treat a blister. Simply cover the area of concern with a few layers of duct tape before putting on your socks and shoes, and you'll be good to go, as the tape will stop your skin from rubbing against the shoe and will prevent any blisters.

If you already have a fresh blister, however, you can use the tape instead of a band-aid as well, but keep in mind that this is a short term solution, as your skin is unable to breathe under the duct tape, and it may slow down the healing process if you're not careful and keep the tape on for too long.

We Bet You Didn’t Know These Uncommon Things Were Edible

A food connoisseur would like to believe that they have tasted the most eclectic dishes from around the world. Even the biggest gourmand, though, is unlikely to have tried some of the most unusual items that aren’t generally considered edible. Here we look at some odd things that you would be surprised to know you can eat. When the apocalypse comes, maybe some of these unusual items can come in handy in dire times.

1. Cigarette
It is widely known that cigarette smoking is bad for health. What about eating it, though? Will that be harmful too?
You would be surprised to know that cigarettes contain natural antiseptic and anti-parasitic qualities, which they get from tobacco. In fact, throughout South and North America tobacco was once used as a remedy for medicinal ailments. So, yes, cigarettes are edible. However, it isn’t encouraged that you go out of your way to make cigarettes your evening snacks or use them for medicinal purposes.

2. Chalk
Let’s be honest: we’ve all been curious about how chalk would taste like when we were in school. Many of us probably accidentally nibbled on some as well. So the good news is that chalk is basically pure calcium and is non-toxic. In fact, some people, with nutritional deficiencies that aren’t clear, are even known to crave eating chalk. Researchers, however, have long said that eating chalk is connected to having low zinc and low iron. Eating white chalk in small amounts will not hurt you, but it isn’t advisable to do so as consuming too much of it can disrupt your digestive system.

3. Clay

Clay, of course, is produced by nature and there are plenty of varieties of it. Clay is used as a natural remedy in several places for the treatment of acne and as a facial mask. Not many would know, though, that clay contains magnesium and other healthy minerals. Bentonite clay, in fact, is composed of aged volcanic ash and can help in cleansing the liver and the colon along with balancing bacteria in the digestive tract.
This obviously doesn’t mean that you head to your local park and begin digging clay from it to eat. There are different varieties of pure, edible clay available in the market which you can try.

4. Glue
Children accidentally consume glue all the time. In fact, many of us would have done the same as children back in our childhoods. Most of us probably think that eating glue would probably stick our insides together. However, some types of glue are actually edible and non-toxic.
Mild forms of white glue are made with a petroleum-based polymer and having a little taste of it won’t damage your stomach. It goes without saying, though, that consuming glue in large quantities and regularly could lead to serious stomach aches and other complications.

5. Leather

This might surprise you the most but it is true: leather is edible. This doesn’t mean, of course, that you begin chewing at your leather shoe or take a bite out of your leather jacket. But it is worth knowing that if you boil leather for several hours it will soften down and will actually be edible and not damaging to the body.
In fact, Native Americans were known to chew on leather hides after boiling it for hours when they were badly deprived of natural food resources. Of course, these days leather is treated with too many chemicals and you would have to really boil it long and hard to make it edible enough.

6. Tree bark
Odd Items to Eat Tree bark

No, don’t be alarmed. We aren’t talking about the bulky, rough, surface of the tree bark. You have to scrape the surface deep enough and reach the cambium layer which is right under the wood. As long as you are using the right and safe part of it, tree bark is a safe and nutritious wild food to eat. Many of our ancestors used this edible inner layer of the tree bark for medicine and for food.

In fact, there’s an American Indian tribe known as “Adirondack”, which literally means bark eaters. Several other cultures have consumed tree bark as fresh, dried or by roasting it to a crisp. Most tree barks have digestible starches, some amounts of sugar, vitamins, and minerals, along with a good dose of fiber.

7. Dandelion

Dandelion, a plant with a yellow flower, is the safest thing you can eat from this list. Many of you might be aware of this flowering plant as the most stubborn weed that refuses to leave your garden. However, dandelion or Taraxacum officinale has many medicinal properties and is also edible.
As a matter of fact, it has plenty of health benefits and is high in antioxidants. In terms of nutritional content, dandelions are abounding in vitamins, minerals, and fiber. The greens of the dandelion can even be cooked or taken raw as they are a brilliant source of vitamins A, C, and K.

8. Cockscomb
Odd Items to Eat Cockscomb
Have you ever wondered what is the red wiggly thing on top of a rooster’s head? It’s called a cockscomb and is considered very tasty by many. In fact, cockscomb is served as an exotic dish in many French, Italian and Chinese cuisines. It can be cooked whole or added to sauces. Apparently, its taste is soft and chewy. Many users have noted that the spikes of the cockscomb have a slightly gelatinous texture with a fine frog-leg flavor. You would also be surprised to know that they are even served as desserts in some places and  Candied cockscombs with cherries and vanilla rice pudding is one of the more exotic desserts.

9. Eggshells
A majority of people who eat eggs almost instantly discard the shells. The next time you are about to dump those eggshells into the dustbin, please consider this – they are very much edible and nutritious. Experts at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences say that a single eggshell contains about 2.2 grams of calcium.
Thus, half an eggshell can provide an adequate amount of calcium required by an adult human being per day. A 2003 review published in The International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology Research found that eggshell powder is a great source of calcium and "may have a positive effect on bone metabolism."
The best way to have eggshells is to have it in powdered form on top of bread, pizza or spaghetti.

10. Cactus
Odd Items to Eat Cactus

Just the thought of forcing a morsel of a spiky cactus plant down your throat would be painful, right? Think again.
There are many edible and delicious varieties of cacti out there that, when prepared, rightly, can be relished and even added to desserts, drinks, salads, soups, and bread. Some cactus plants taste better after being cooked while some have to be peeled or have their spines removed. You just need to know how to pick the cactus pads and also understand how to prepare them. Many have stated that they taste like okra or cucumber.

Quick And Effective Home Remedies

Some excellent tips will teach you how to make the most out of your kitchen when you’re feeling sick.
1. Horseradish

To ease stiff muscles, make a paste from a cup of oil and a tablespoon of horseradish, then massage it into the sore spot.

2. Vinegar
Bruises can be faded quickly by soaking a piece of cotton wool in vinegar and applying it to the bruised area for about an hour.

3. Mouthwash
To prevent popped blisters from getting infected, soak them in alcoholic mouthwash, and then wrap them in a Bandaid.

4. Olive oil
Eczema bothering you? Massage the area with olive oil. Olive oil is rich in antioxidants that fight the effects of eczema.

5. Soap
If your dog has fleas, a simple bath with water and some dish soap will get rid of them.

6. Glue
Got a splinter you can’t pull out? Pour some school glue on it. Once the glue dries, peel it off and watch as the splinter comes out with it too.

7. Honey and vinegar

You can make an easy sore throat medicine by mixing equal amounts of honey and vinegar and swallowing a spoonful six times a day.

8. Honey
Painful zit? Dab some honey on it and cover with a Band-Aid. The honey disinfects the skin, helping it heal faster.

9. Licorice sticks
If the soles of your feet are very calloused, you can grind 2-3 licorice sticks, mix them with half a teaspoon of Vaseline, and then rub into the soles.

10. Oatmeal
To ease arthritis pain, mix two cups of oatmeal with a cup of water, warm up for a minute in the microwave, allow the oats to cool down, then apply to the sore joints.

11. Extra-strong mints
If you’re suffering from a congested nose, you can get extra-strong mints instead of a spray that’s full of chemicals. Mint has powerful decongestive properties.

12. Baking soda
To effectively fight a urinary infection, drink a cup of water with a tablespoon of baking soda (or Alka-Seltzer). The infection needs an acidic environment to thrive, and the solution is a base, making your bladder inhospitable to the bacteria.

13. Listerine
Suffering from an infected toenail or fungus? Soak your feet in a bath of classic Listerine (or other such mouthwash), diluted with a little water.

14. Tomato paste
Infected zits and sores can be treated with a compress of tomato paste. The tomatoes’ acidity helps kill the infection and heal the area.

15. Corn oil

If your cat is suffering from ear mites, gently rub corn oil into the cat’s inner ear. The oil soothes the skin while suffocating the mites.

Mussel-inspired glue may make foetal surgery safer

Scientists have developed a strong glue based on a mussel adhesive which could make performing surgery on fetuses safer in the future.

Whether to perform surgery on a foetus is a heart- wrenching decision. It involves penetrating the highly delicate amniotic sac, increasing health risks to the foetus.

Now, researchers have created a glue, inspired by the tenacious grip of mussels on slippery rocks, that could one day help save the lives of the youngest patients.

"One of the biggest risks in performing surgery on fetuses is not the surgical procedure itself, but the insertion of a foetal scope through the amniotic sac, which is very fragile," said, a researcher.

"After the surgery, the small hole where the scope penetrates the membrane can start to tear. If it tears completely, premature labour is likely," said the researcher.

Since these operations are often done in the second trimester well before the foetus is fully developed, early delivery increases the risk of foetal morbidity.

An adhesive that can prevent the amniotic sac from tearing could help the foetus remain in the womb longer, which would potentially lead to a healthier future for the baby, researchers said.

A well-known example of a severe birth defect that would make a foetus a candidate for surgery is spina bifida, a condition in which the neural tube - the part that becomes the baby's brain and spinal cord - does not develop or close properly.

To fix such problems a few decades ago, surgeons had to cut open a woman's abdomen and womb.
Now, doctors can use skinny endoscopic tools to perform operations through a small hole. Still, to reach the foetus, the instruments must penetrate the amniotic sac, which cannot heal or easily be sewn shut because it is so fragile.

Sealing it with an adhesive is a challenge because the membrane is wet. Delivering a surgical glue post-operation is a major hurdle.

Mussels produce sticky substances that allow them to cling to rocks and ship hulls in wet environments, even under pounding waves.

Developing mimics of these substances for surgical use involves turning them into hydrogels. However, this conversion so far has required chemical cross-linkers that could be toxic to fetuses.

The scientist wanted to eliminate the cross-linkers. He infused an adhesive ingredient from the mussel foot called dihydroxyphenylalanine, or DOPA, into a special polymer that can dissolve in a bio-compatible solvent.

The solution can then be drawn into a syringe. To test their material, the researchers used pieces of a membrane that surrounds a cow's heart as a model of the amniotic sac.

They applied the solution with the syringe to overlapping pieces of the wet, filmy tissues. On contact with moisture on the tissues, the mixture immediately became rubbery. After about an hour, the glue set and held the pieces together.

However, even with the right polymer and solvent, the researchers still needed to figure out how the solution might work in a real surgery.
