Removing a Painful Splinter Has Never Been Simpler!

Splinters are small fragments of metal, glass, or wood that are embedded in your skin. They can be very painful and need to be dealt with as quickly as possible in order to relieve discomfort and the possibility of infection. The majority of us try to dig the splinter out using a needle or some tweezers, but this is not a safe method as it can significantly increase the risk of infection. There are loads of other safe and simple home remedies that make it easier to remove splinters without added complications.

Here are the top 10 home remedies to remove splinters safely and without pain:

1. Duct Tape

This is one of the easiest methods to remove a splinter. This simple remedy works best when some of the splinter is still sticking out of the skin. It will not work for fully embedded splinters.

Method

1. Use lukewarm water and soap to wash the skin surrounding the splinter, and allow it to dry.

2. Place a piece of duct tape over it.

3. Gently rub over the top of the tape with your fingertip.

4. Wait 5 minutes, then pull the tape off in one motion. The splinter will come out with the tape.

5. Finish by cleaning the area again with some lukewarm water.

2. White Vinegar

White vinegar is another very effective home remedy for splinters as the acidity of the vinegar will cause the splinter to break through the surface of the skin, making it easier to pull out with some tweezers.

Method

1. Pour some white vinegar into a small bowl.

2. Soak the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes.

3. Check whether the splinter has risen out of your skin. If so, pull it out using some tweezers. If not, continue to soak the area until it does so.

4. After the splinter has been removed, rinse the area with lukewarm water.

3. Baking Soda

Baking soda is good for those splinters that are difficult to see, as well as those that are deeply embedded in the skin. Baking soda helps to reduce pain and pushes the splinter to the surface, so it is easier to pull out.

Method

1. Mix water and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to form a thick paste.

2. Spread this paste onto a bandage and place the bandage over the affected area.

3. After 24 hours, take the bandage off.

4. If the splinter is visible, pull it out. If not, repeat the above steps and wait another 24 hours.

5. After the splinter has been removed, rinse the skin gently with lukewarm water.

4. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide disinfects the area and reduces inflammation so that the splinter is easier to remove.

Method

1. Soak a cotton ball in 3% hydrogen peroxide.

2. Secure the cotton ball on the affected area with tape.

3. Leave it for a few hours.

4. Remove the cotton ball and pull the splinter out with a pair of clean tweezers.

5. Rinse the area with lukewarm water.

5. Epsom Salt

Epsom salt works wonders on deeply lodged splinters as it draws water out of the skin cells, bringing the splinter to the surface.

Method

1. Place a pinch of Epsom salt on a bandage.

2. Place the bandage on the affected area.

3. Leave it there for the whole day.

4. Remove the bandage in the evening.

5. Pull the splinter out using some tweezers.

If you would like to read about other uses of Epsom salt, click here.

6. Banana Peel

Banana peels contain enzymes that will soften the skin and make the splinter move to the surface. Furthermore, its moisturizing and antimicrobial properties will prevent any further infection.

Method

1. Cut a small piece of banana peel.

2. Place the peel (with the white side down) on the affected area, and secure it with some tape.

3. Leave it overnight.

4. The next morning, remove the splinter using some tweezers.

Banana peel also has many other uses, you can read more about them by clicking here.

7. Raw Potato

This remedy works best when the splinter is partially visible, not when it is embedded deep in the skin.

Method

1. Wash a raw potato and cut off a thick slice.

2. Place the potato slice on the splinter, make sure the fleshy part is touching the splinter.

3. Gently press down so that the splinter pierces the potato.

4. Carefully remove the potato slice, along with the splinter.

8. Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender oil will help draw the splinter out, and thanks to its antimicrobial properties, it will also help prevent any infections from occurring.

Method

1. Apply a couple of drops of lavender essential oil to the affected area.

2. Leave it for a few hours.

3. From time to time, check whether the splinter has risen to the skin's surface.

4. Once it has, remove it with a pair of tweezers

9. Honey
Honey encourages the splinter to move toward the surface so it's easier to remove. Furthermore, due to its moisturizing and antiseptic properties, it will sooth the skin and prevent infections.

Method

1. Spread a lot of honey onto the affected area.

2. Place a bandage over it and leave overnight.

3. The next morning, pull the splinter out using some tweezers.

4. After rinsing with some lukewarm water, reapply some more honey to heal the skin.

10. Bread and Milk

This remedy has been used for centuries to remove splinters.

Method

1. Dip some bread in some warm milk.

2. Apply this to the area and secure with a bandage.

3. Leave overnight.

4. Remove the next morning - the splinter should come with it.

5. Clean the affected area with some lukewarm water to prevent infections.

Additional Tips

Once the splinter has been removed, make sure that the area is cleaned properly to prevent infections.
Keep the area clean until it is completely healed.
Don't squeeze a splinter to try to push it to the surface, It could break into tiny pieces and make it even more difficult to remove.
Use rubbing alcohol to sterilize the tips of the tweezers you are going to use to remove a splinter.

Duct tape hacks

1) Make Your Shoes Warmer

Here is a handy trick for those cold months. You can use duct tape to make your boots warmer. In order to do so, all you have to do is just wrap a solid layer of duct tape around the insoles of the shoes (cheap insoles available in supermarkets can be likewise used to spare the original insoles of your shoes). The plastic surface of the duct tape will help seal the heat and reflect it to the soles of your feet, and you will feel much warmer wearing these DIY insoles.

2)  Hide a Spare Key or Other Valuables
With the help of duct tape, you can hide away valuables, such as keys, credit cards, etc., in the most inconspicuous places. No more hiding the spare house key under the doormat - simply stick it to a piece of duct tape like in the image above and attach the key somewhere unexpected, like under the seat of the patio bench, for example.

3) Conceal Unsightly Cables
It's terribly annoying when cables are dangling freely behind electronic devices, not to mention - dangerous, especially for pets and small children. To secure the cables and make sure they don't get pulled on accidentally, you can attach the wires with the help of a small piece of duct tape to the wall, floor, or even furniture, making them less visible and dangerous.

4)  Protect Floors From Being Scratched
Hardwood floors are so fragile - any little scratch can damage the topcoat, which introduces humidity mold and endangers the integrity of your floors. Of course, you can revarnish them here and there, but too many coats of varnish and constant refurbishing aren't good for your floors either, not to mention that it's quite expensive and troublesome.

So why not learn to prevent your floor from scuffing instead? Just attach a small piece of duct tape onto the bottom of the chair's legs and you're done, simple!

5) Patch Up a Wound Temporarily

This scenario happens way too often: you're messing around in the shed or garden, using sharp tools, and suddenly, you get a cut on your hand or arm that starts bleeding. If you don't have a bandage or band-aid near you, simply reach for the silver roll of duct tape and seal the wound to stop the bleeding. Needless to say, this is not a permanent solution, as you do need to clean, disinfect, and dress the wound properly afterward, but in a pinch, duct tape gets the job done, too.

8. Catch Insects

No need to purchase special sticky pads or rolls, or to buy expensive sprays laden with chemicals to get rid of the pests invading your home. All you will need is a piece of duct tape and a smidge of peanut butter. Fold the sides of a small piece of the duct tape so that you can handle it conveniently, and put a little amount of peanut butter in the middle of the tape.

Try not to disrupt the sticky surface if the tape, as this is exactly what will be trapping the bugs. Put these pieces underneath your kitchen cabinets, near the trashcan, and any other places in your home you see the pests. After just a few days, you'll find that the bugs have stuck to the tape and you'll have to throw the tape out and replace it if necessary.

You can also use the tape to trap flies - simply hang strips of tape from the ceiling and you have DIY flypaper.

9) Patch Up a Tent
Duct tape is a happy camper's best friend, as its multifunctionality comes very handy in a situation where you have to fit all your gear in a backpack. We already listed a few ways you can use duct tape while camping, but another way you can make use of the silver tape is by patching up a leaky tent. We typically even cover the areas with small openings with duct tape after setting up the tent to keep all the insects outside.

10) Create a Temporary Hem for Pants
Wearing pants that are too long is not very neat, that's certainly true, but it's also very uncomfortable, as you can step and even trip on the excessively long pants. Still, actually getting the pants tailored can be quite costly and can take a while. Luckily, there's also a quick solution, and it, of course, includes duct tape. Simply follow these steps:
Turn the pants inside out, put them on to see what you're doing, and roll them up evenly to the required length. Then, stick a few little pieces of duct tape on the hem, and you're done. You can machine wash these pants without worry, and they typically stay taped and hemmed for several months.

11) Banish Warts
Another neat trick you can do with duct tape is to get rid of warts. Simply stick a little piece of tape over the area and keep some on for at least a few weeks, regularly replacing with a fresh piece of tape. The tape will cut off any oxygen to the wart, and it will simply die off, and one day, you'll just find that the wart will peel off on its own as you remove the tape. Many people are convinced this is the best and least invasive way of getting rid of a wart, as pointed out by the American Academy of Dermatology.

12) Make an Arm Sling in an Emergency
Emergencies happen, and when they do and you have the knowledge to help someone, it's always a very pleasant feeling. If someone is suspected to have injured their arm, for example, you can use duct tape to stabilize the joint in the place of injury by wrapping the tape around the arm and then creating a makeshift sling. This should be more than enough to transport the person safely to the emergency unit.

13) Make Shoes Slip FreeIf you find that a pair of shoes you love is way too slippery, be it due to poor design or wear and tear, this tip is for you. Simply attach a piece of tape to the sole of the shoe, and this will instantly give it some extra grip. This will not only make the shoes more comfortable but also safer, as slippery shoes can be the cause of falls and leg injuries.

14) Remove Glue from Surfaces
Have you added a few stickers to your car window that you're starting to regret, but you still don't want to get rid of them because of the hideous glue residue they will leave behind? If that speaks to you, you need some duct tape and some window cleaner. After removing the sticker as best as you can, apply a piece of duct tape onto the surface with glue residue, be it wood, glass, or metal, and then pull.

Repeat a few times with a fresh piece of tape every time until little to no glue residue remains. The duct tape is so sticky that it typically removes the majority of the glue from surfaces, but to finish the job and give shine to the surface, wipe it down with a cloth dampened with some window cleaner as a finishing touch.

15) Remove a Splinter
The sticky surface of duct tape is so strong it is actually capable of pulling out even a very deep splinter from your skin in a matter of minutes. The procedure is as follows: first, clean and disinfect the area, then apply a piece of duct tape and wait for half an hour. After 30 minutes, pull on the tape, and as you do, the splinter will probably be pulled out in an instant. You will be able to see the splinter on the duct tape when you're done.

16) Protect Feet From Blisters
Who knew duct tape has so many medical uses? One more way you can use it is to prevent and treat a blister. Simply cover the area of concern with a few layers of duct tape before putting on your socks and shoes, and you'll be good to go, as the tape will stop your skin from rubbing against the shoe and will prevent any blisters.

If you already have a fresh blister, however, you can use the tape instead of a band-aid as well, but keep in mind that this is a short term solution, as your skin is unable to breathe under the duct tape, and it may slow down the healing process if you're not careful and keep the tape on for too long.

7 Step Baking Soda Solution to Your Troublesome Splinter

Having a splinter is awful. At best it's uncomfortable, at worst it can be horribly painful, particularly to small children. What's more, the thought of removing that wooden intruder with tweezers or a pin is enough to strike any soul with trepidation. But, luckily, here is a simple homemade solution you can make using baking soda. So, whip that magical powder out of its cupboard and let's get to work!
Step 1: Do not squeeze at it!
First, it's important you get a good idea of what kind of splinter you are dealing with, and where precisely it is. Squeezing may cause the splinter to go deeper into your skin, or even break it up into smaller pieces that are even harder to remove. So, refrain from squeezing.
Step 2: Clean the area, using soap and water
Always do this when you have any kind of open wound, to avoid infections. Then dry yourself off with a paper towel. Do so very gently, so as not to aggravate the wound. Remember that wood loves moisture, so keep it as dry as you can.
Step 3: Look at the splinter using a magnifying glass
Make sure that the splinter is small. The method we are about to use makes the skin swell. This swelling will push out the splinter. But this will only work on small splinters. If yours seems rather large, you will have to consider some other methods.
Step 4: Make Your Baking Soda Paste
Your paste will be made with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and a little water. We want a nice thick paste.
Step 5: Apply your paste to the area
The best way to do this is to spread the paste on a bandage and place it over the splinter.
Step 6: Wait 1 day, then take the bandage off
Take the bandage off after one day. If you can see the splinter sticking out, you will then be able to pull it out (step 7) with a pair of tweezers, without penetrating your skin. And if it's sticking out but you can barely see it, it may naturally come out when you take a wash.
If the splinter is still inside, repeat steps 4-6 as many times as necessary.
Step 7: Apply a topical anesthetic
Once you are ready to pull out the splinter, the area will still fees quite painful, apply some Baby Orajel to the wound. This ointment causes numbing, which should furnish you with the confidence to proceed. Wait just a couple of minutes and then pull it out with some tweezers. Finished.
