Health Benefits of Cloves (Laung)

Health Benefits of Cloves (Laung): A Spice That Deserves More Attention

One of my favourite winter spices, cloves are often pushed to the edge of your plate. They are mostly used to flavour dishes but seldomly eaten whole. But if you’d know about their impressive qualities, you’d agree they deserve more attention.Looking back, cloves were probably first used by Chinese emperors to hide bad breath. Over the years, cloves grabbed a prominent place in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda to treat nausea, digestive disorders and flu. The clove tree which is native to Indonesia bears dry, aromatic flower buds which are used as a spice. These unopened, pink buds are picked and dried till they turn brown. They can be used whole or ground. When cooked or soaked in water, they tend to become soft and flavourful. Cloves have a long shelf life and this flowering spice will last you almost a year if stored away from light and moisture. Powered cloves tend to lose their flavour faster. The sweet aroma sparks memories of the good things about winter - frosted windows and cloves swirling in a hot cup. The pungent and peppery flavour leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling – just what you need during those chilly days. The active component of cloves is the eugenol oil. This oil makes up about 60-90% of each clove and it acts against bacteria, viruses and fungi. The oil is known for its antiseptic, anesthetic, aromatic and astringent properties.

According to Dr. Ashutosh Gautam from Baidyanath, “Clove oil is one of the richest sources of antioxidants. In aromatherapy, it is used as an antiseptic and pain reliever especially for toothaches and stomach pain.  It is often mixed with other oils to treat various disorders. For instance, those who have troubled sleep can apply some warm clove oil along with sesame oil on the forehead to feel calm and relaxed.”To make clove infused oil at home, start with toasting a table spoon of whole cloves over medium heat. This helps in mobilizing the volatile oils and makes it easier to extract them. Lightly tap the heads to crack them open and add them to a cup of olive oil or coconut oil. Alternatively, you can grind them and place the powder in a cheesecloth and dip it in the oil jar. Seal with a lid and let it sit for 10 to 15 days but don’t forget to shake it every couple of days. For a stronger flavour you can use more cloves or let them steep for a longer time. Strain and it’s good to use. Since clove essential oil is very potent in nature, it's best to dilute it.In Ayurveda, cloves are said to be kaphahar which means that they have the ability to balance the kapha dosha. Kapha governs the structure and fluid in the body. Its primary function is protection. Being carminative in nature, it helps in improving digestion. A carminative is any herb or preparation that prevents the formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract or helps with expulsion. Therefore, it is suggested you add cloves while cooking foods like kidney beans or black gram that tend to cause flatulence. I simply love the wonderful spiciness it adds to everything. At home, using cloves for clearing up cold has been an ancient natural remedy. You can sip away the symptoms of flu and congestion with a healing brew of cloves, cinnamon and some whole cardamoms infused in tea. You can even inhale the vapours of cloves or clove oil and then sit back and breathe easy. From my grandmother’s treasure trove of home remedies, cloves are great to clear acne and blemishes. Make a paste with cloves, some honey and a drop of lime. Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse off for glowing skin. Moreover, clove oil is very effective in treating dry and itchy skin. Another clever use of cloves was when she would toss some in the wardrobe and other places to cover up odours. The strong, spicy scent can do wonders even while cooking meats like fish or pork where the fleshy smell may put some people off. I usually like to stick some cloves in an onion bulb and use it to stir my soup. That gives it a warm and intense flavour.

7 Step Baking Soda Solution to Your Troublesome Splinter

Having a splinter is awful. At best it's uncomfortable, at worst it can be horribly painful, particularly to small children. What's more, the thought of removing that wooden intruder with tweezers or a pin is enough to strike any soul with trepidation. But, luckily, here is a simple homemade solution you can make using baking soda. So, whip that magical powder out of its cupboard and let's get to work!
Step 1: Do not squeeze at it!
First, it's important you get a good idea of what kind of splinter you are dealing with, and where precisely it is. Squeezing may cause the splinter to go deeper into your skin, or even break it up into smaller pieces that are even harder to remove. So, refrain from squeezing.
Step 2: Clean the area, using soap and water
Always do this when you have any kind of open wound, to avoid infections. Then dry yourself off with a paper towel. Do so very gently, so as not to aggravate the wound. Remember that wood loves moisture, so keep it as dry as you can.
Step 3: Look at the splinter using a magnifying glass
Make sure that the splinter is small. The method we are about to use makes the skin swell. This swelling will push out the splinter. But this will only work on small splinters. If yours seems rather large, you will have to consider some other methods.
Step 4: Make Your Baking Soda Paste
Your paste will be made with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and a little water. We want a nice thick paste.
Step 5: Apply your paste to the area
The best way to do this is to spread the paste on a bandage and place it over the splinter.
Step 6: Wait 1 day, then take the bandage off
Take the bandage off after one day. If you can see the splinter sticking out, you will then be able to pull it out (step 7) with a pair of tweezers, without penetrating your skin. And if it's sticking out but you can barely see it, it may naturally come out when you take a wash.
If the splinter is still inside, repeat steps 4-6 as many times as necessary.
Step 7: Apply a topical anesthetic
Once you are ready to pull out the splinter, the area will still fees quite painful, apply some Baby Orajel to the wound. This ointment causes numbing, which should furnish you with the confidence to proceed. Wait just a couple of minutes and then pull it out with some tweezers. Finished.

Amazing Benefits of Camphor

You probably know what camphor smells like, even if you don't know what it's called. Camphor is one of the main ingredients that gives Vicks VapoRub its strong smell, as well as its medicinal benefits.

It's a flammable, waxy, white or transparent solid substance that is found in the wood of the camphor laurel, a tree native to Asia. It's available in the form of small cubes and an essential oil that is extracted from the camphor tree.

It possesses anesthetic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, sedative, stimulative, and antispasmodic properties. It also works as a natural decongestant, which mainly led to its medicinal use.

Here are 10 surprising benefits of camphor.

1. Cures a Cough
Its strong smell has the power to get rid of a stuffy nose and clear a congested chest. In fact, a number of medicated chest and throat rubs contain camphor as one of the main ingredients.
- Mix 4-5 drops of camphor essential oil with a tablespoon of almond oil. Gently rub this oil blend onto your chest for a couple of minutes. Use as needed.
- To treat a chronic cough, steam inhalation is extremely effective. Put a couple of drops of camphor essential oil into a bowl of hot water. Inhale the vapor to get some relief from chest pain and coughing.

2. Clears Acne
Its anti-inflammatory nature helps to reduce inflammation, swelling, and redness in your skin.
1. Place 1 cup of extra-virgin olive oil in an airtight jar.
2. Add 1 teaspoon of camphor oil and mix well.
3. After washing your face with a cleanser, pat dry and put some of the oil on the acne.
4. Massage it into your skin for 5 minutes.
5. Leave it overnight.
6. The following morning, wash off the oil with lukewarm water and a cleanser.
7. Do this once per day.
3. Clears Nasal Congestion
Camphor works as a natural decongestant that provides relief from a blocked nose and makes breathing easy and comfortable again.
- Mix a little camphor oil into 1 tablespoon of warm mustard oil. Rub the mixture gently on your chest, back, and throat before going to bed to make breathing easier.
- You can also apply an over-the-counter, camphor-based cream onto your chest a few times a day to help fight nasal congestion.
4. Cures Cold Sores
Cold sores are quite common, highly contagious, and cause a lot of pain and irritation. To treat them, try camphor. It will temporarily relieve any pain and itching caused by the lesions, due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.
