Multivitamins SHOULD NOT Contain These Ingredients

Multivitamins are often marketed as essential supplements to fill nutritional gaps and support overall health. However, not all multivitamins are created equal, and some may contain ingredients that are unnecessary or potentially harmful. Fortunately, you can quickly determine the quality of your multivitamin by checking the label for certain warning signs. Here are some things that you absolutely should avoid when choosing a multivitamin.

 
1. Mercury
Mercury is one of the top ten chemicals listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as contributing to worldwide health issues. WHO advises that exposure to mercury causes health hazards for adults and poses a developmental threat to children. Mercury exposure above acceptable levels can have cytotoxic effects, lowering glutathione levels and increasing free radical production in the body. Furthermore, mercury compounds can block enzymes essential for DNA repair, causing harm to healthy cells.
 
 
2. Cyanocobalamin
Cyanocobalamin is a kind of vitamin B12, but not the naturally occurring form found in food. "Cobalamin" means B12, but "cyano" refers to cyanide. Though the presence of cyanide in cyanocobalamin is not harmful to health, it's not considered the most ideal form of B12. If you wish to distinguish between different forms of B12, recalling that the component is cyanide might be helpful. You should instead look for methylcobalamin, also known as "methylB12," which has been shown to have neurological activating properties.' 
 
 
3. Calcium carbonate
This form of calcium is difficult to absorb, making it less effective. However, it's a cost-effective option for manufacturers, which is why it is widely used. Therefore, it is highly recommended to opt for calcium citrate, which is easier to digest and absorb. This is especially important if you are taking a separate calcium supplement. Do note that most of the prevalent calcium supplements available on the shelf contain calcium carbonate. Thus, it's essential to check the labels and ensure you opt for calcium citrate, which is easily accessible.



4. Magnesium oxide
Here's another example of a mineral that's often poorly absorbed but is commonly found in multivitamin supplements. When it comes to minerals, it's better to look for chelated versions, in which the mineral is bonded to another molecule to improve absorption. Look for chelated forms such as magnesium malate, glycinate, or citrate. All you need to remember is to avoid the option marked with an X (oxide). 
 
 
 
5. Iron
Multivitamins containing added iron can present risks for individuals without an iron deficiency. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) warn that healthy individuals consuming high doses of iron supplements, especially on an empty stomach, may encounter adverse effects like upset stomach, constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Moreover, excessive iron intake may lead to more severe complications, such as inflammation of the stomach lining and ulcers. 
 
 
 
6. Retinol (vitamin A)

Vitamin A plays a role in maintaining organ health, strengthening the immune system, controlling reproductive activities, and preserving visual acuity. It is, however, recommended that you obtain as much vitamin A as you need through your diet, as too much vitamin A can cause adverse effects in some individuals.
 
Pregnant women should exercise caution while taking pure vitamin A supplements since excessive consumption has been associated with problems with fetal development. Alternative options include beta-carotene, which acts as a precursor to vitamin A and needs to be processed by the body.

Did You Know Your Ears Hold Secrets About Your Heart?

Could that small vertical mark on your ear have something to do with heart disease? Here is a simple test that could protect you from serious damage to your health.

In 1973, a doctor named Sanders T. Frank conducted a number of studies to determine whether an earlobe crease, known as "Frank's sign", could be an indicator of coronary artery disease. He found that patients who had creases running at an angle from the bottom of their ear opening to the edge of their ear lobe were at higher risk for heart disease. 
 
But before you start worrying, here are some basic statistics and background on the test. Since Dr. Frank's studies were published, more scientists have looked into the correlation between the earlobe crease and heart disease. 
 
Researchers found that the earlobe crease "may identify a subset of patients prone to early aging and to the early development of coronary artery disease, whose prognosis might be improved by early preventative measures." Others like Dr. Sarah Samaan clarify that, "Heart disease doesn't cause earlobe creases, nor do the creases cause heart disease, but they seem to be a marker for an unhealthy lifestyle."

Biologically, ear creases result when the elastic tissue around the small blood vessels in the ear begins to degenerate. This is the same type of change that occurs in the blood vessels when one has coronary artery disease. Therefore, scientists concluded that the visible change in the earlobe could be an indication of more serious changes occurring in the blood vessels around the heart. 
 
To provide you with some numbers, a more recent study in 2006 found the predictive value of the ear crease to be about 80 percent in individuals 40 years and younger. That said, it appears that ear creases can predict certain aging diseases like heart disease and possibly even diabetes, but there are still some scientists that are unconvinced. 
 
One study conducted in 1980 found that there was no significant relationship between earlobe creases and coronary artery disease in American Indians, suggesting that "Frank's sign" may not have the same level of indication in other ethnic groups. Another study on Japanese Americans also found no correlation between earlobe creases and heart disease. 
 
Yet other scientists propose that because the studies are usually conducted on patients over the age of 50, the results may be biased as individuals naturally have a higher risk for these diseases as they age. It could be that earlobe creases are simply a sign of the natural aging process. 
 
Despite these doubts, most scientists and doctors agree that the appearance of an ear crease at the age of 50 and below could be a good indication that the body is not as healthy as it should be. For this reason, if you have an earlobe crease, or know someone with one, it is important to consult a doctor who can test your blood and determine if this odd indicator holds any truth. Health Benefits of Hibiscus extract

1) Packed with antioxidants

One study in people with Marfan syndrome, a disorder that affects connective tissue, found that an infusion of hibiscus extract reduced oxidative stress and increased antioxidant levels in the blood. 

Hibiscus flower extract helped protect against cell damage in rats.  

2) Lowers high BP

High blood pressure can place extra strain on the heart and cause it to weaken. High blood pressure is also associated with an increased risk of heart disease.  46 people with high blood pressure consumed either hibiscus tea or a placebo. After 1 month, those who drank hibiscus tea had a greater decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure than those who took the placebo. 

While hibiscus tea may be a safe and natural way to help lower blood pressure, it is not recommended for those who are taking medications to treat high blood pressure, as it may interact

3. May help improve blood fat levels

In addition to lowering blood pressure, some studies have found that hibiscus tea may help improve blood fat levels, which can be another risk factor for heart disease.

 In a small 2009 study, 60 people with diabetes consumed either hibiscus tea or black tea. After 1 month, those who drank hibiscus tea had increased levels of HDL (good) cholesterol and decreased levels of total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and triglycerides.

 

4. May boost liver health

Your liver has several functions — such as producing proteins, secreting bile, and breaking down fat — that are essential to your overall health. 

A small 2014 study in 19 people with overweight found that taking hibiscus extract for 12 weeks improved liver steatosis. This condition is characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver, which can lead to liver failure  .

 A study in hamsters also demonstrated the potential liver-protecting properties of hibiscus extract, showing that treatment with hibiscus extract decreased markers of liver damage.

Several studies suggest that hibiscus tea may be associated with weight loss and could help protect against obesity.

In one small 2014 study, 36 participants with overweight consumed either hibiscus extract or a placebo. After 12 weeks, those who had taken hibiscus extract had reductions in body weight, body fat, body mass index, and waist-to-hip ratio.

Current research is limited to studies using concentrated doses of hibiscus extract. More studies are needed to determine how hibiscus tea may influence weight loss in humans.

Hibiscus is high in polyphenols, which are compounds that have been shown to possess powerful anticancer properties.

Test-tube studies have found impressive results regarding the potential effects of hibiscus extract on cancer cells.

In one test-tube study, hibiscus extract impaired cell growth and reduced the invasiveness of mouth and plasma cell cancers

Another test-tube study reported that hibiscus leaf extract prevented human prostate cancer cells from spreading .

Hibiscus extract and its components have also been shown to inhibit the growth of other types of cancer cells in test-tube studies, including breast, stomach, and skin cancer.

Keep in mind that these were test-tube studies using large amounts of hibiscus extract. Research in humans is needed to evaluate the potential effect of hibiscus tea on cancer.

 

Bacteria are single-celled microorganisms that can cause a variety of infections, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and urinary tract infections.

Some test-tube studies have found that, in addition to having antioxidant and anticancer properties, hibiscus could help protect against bacterial infections.

In fact, one test-tube study found that hibiscus extract inhibited the activity of E. coli, a strain of bacteria that can cause symptoms such as cramping, gas, and diarrhea .

Another test-tube study showed that the extract fought eight strains of bacteria and was as effective as some medications used to treat bacterial infections .

 

8. Flavorful and easy to make

Aside from potentially offering a multitude of health benefits, hibiscus tea is delicious and easy to prepare at home.

Simply add dried hibiscus flowers to a teapot and pour boiling water over them. Let it steep for 5 minutes, and then strain, sweeten if desired, and enjoy.

Hibiscus tea can be consumed hot or cold and has a tart taste similar to that of cranberries. For this reason, it is often sweetened with honey or flavored with a squeeze of lime juice to balance the tartness.

10 Interesting Discoveries of the Brain in Recent Times

Despite the relentless efforts of scientists to unravel the mysteries of the brain, it remains the most enigmatic and intriguing organ of the human body. However, in recent years, there have been several groundbreaking advancements in neuroscience that have provided new insights into the intricate workings of the brain and its role in shaping our behavior and experiences. In 2023, scientists made a surprising discovery: a protective barrier in the brain that helps in waste clearance and serves as a sentinel for immune cell activity. Apparently, the thin shield regulates the flow of proteins and molecules between different compartments containing cerebrospinal fluid, a colorless liquid that flows around the brain and through tubes.
 
 
2. The Alice in Wonderland Syndrome

Named after the iconic Lewis Carroll novel, this rare and perplexing condition causes people to misjudge the size of things. Those suffering from this condition may consider themselves to be shrinking or increasing, or they may view nearby things to be the wrong size. Although there are only about 170 reported cases, scientists are still baffled about the cause. However, experts hope to make progress in understanding the condition with a study commencing in 2024. This new study focuses on lesion network mapping and comparing brain scans of people with Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) to those of healthy people and people with other neuropsychiatric disorders. 
 
Interestingly, researchers noticed that more than 85% of AIWS-affected brains had lesions in two specific brain regions: the visual processing area and the region responsible for size perception.  
 
 
3. Brain injuries repaired with minibrains

Scientists successfully treated brain damage in rats by using cerebral organoids, which are small 3D replicas of the brain. Cultivated from human stem cells, these organoids were transplanted into the visual cortices of the rats, the brain region responsible for processing initial visual information. Although researchers want to use this technology on humans in the future, such an application is still a long way off, potentially requiring many years of additional development and testing.
 
 
4. Your brain wires itself to match your native language

A recent study examining people fluent in German and Arabic suggests that one's native language may impact the connectivity between information-processing regions in the brain. The observed disparities in brain architecture among participants were attributed to linguistic differences between the two languages. 5. Marmosets swap brain cells with their twins
Researchers at Harvard University discovered an unusual aspect of marmoset twin development: the exchange of brain cells. This unexpected discovery sheds light on chimerism, in which one organism has genetic material from two different sources. During gestation, twin mammals, including marmosets, share a circulatory system assisted by the mother's placenta. This allows for the exchange of developing stem cells between twins. 
 
Although chimerism is relatively uncommon in the animal kingdom, marmosets are an exception because of their reproductive biology. Despite generally giving birth to non-identical twins or triplets, these little primates can demonstrate chimerism, with up to 80% of their blood cells derived from their twin.


6. Psychedelics may treat depression by invading brain cells

There's growing interest in psychedelics as potential treatments for chronic depression, and researchers are looking at a new mechanism: their capacity to penetrate brain cells. Substances like LSD, DMT, and psilocybin interact with serotonin receptors, both externally and internally within cells. This unique feature suggests that psychedelics might activate pathways inaccessible to conventional antidepressants, which mainly affect serotonin levels outside cells. This differential targeting may explain the therapeutic benefits of psychedelic substances, since they reduce the formation of new neural connections.
 
 
 
7. Doctors perform first surgery on baby's brain in the womb
In a groundbreaking surgical feat, doctors corrected a malformed blood vessel in a fetus' brain before birth, ushering in a new era of prenatal care. This rare occurrence, affecting approximately 1 in 60,000 births, usually demands postpartum therapy, sometimes after the window for averting problems has closed. However, in a remarkable turn of events, doctors achieved success in March last year by intervening during pregnancy, offering a glimmer of hope for early intervention and improved outcomes. 
 
Medical experts from Boston Children's Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital used ultrasound guidance to correct a vein of what’s known as a Galen malformation, a condition that causes extremely high blood flow and increases the risk of neurologic and cardiac issues. Such complications include heart failure, severe brain injury, and even death shortly after birth. 
 
 
This groundbreaking surgery was conducted on a 34-week-old fetus. The baby girl, who had previously been identified as being at high risk for serious malformation-related complications during pregnancy, didn't require heart failure medication or additional surgical treatments after birth. 
 
 
8. Human brains show larger-than-life activity at the moment of death
Recent findings suggest a surge in brain activity during the final minutes of life, which may reflect conscious experiences. This surge can sometimes happen after a person has stopped breathing but before the brain has ceased functioning, the research published in the journal PNAS notes. The patterns of brain activity during this period are similar to those observed during wakefulness or dreaming. This has led to speculation that there may be a connection between these patterns and otherworldly experiences reported by those who have had near-death experiences. These experiences may include feelings of detachment from the body, encounters with tunnels and bright lights, or the re-experiencing of significant memories. However, since all the participants in the study eventually passed away, it is impossible to determine whether they actually had such experiences. 
 
Some experts believe this behavior is related to the concept of "moving toward the light" or seeing a "life flashing before one's eyes," which is often shown in films. Others regard it as just "aberrant electrophysiological activity." However, this is still a hypothesis.
 
 
9. Scientists keep a pig’s brain alive outside its body 
Scientists at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center have created a device that can keep a pig’s brain alive outside of its body. The technology uses a custom pump to maintain a continuous blood flow to the pig's brain. An advanced algorithm monitors vital metrics like blood pressure, flow rate, and pulse rhythm. Furthermore, the machine can adjust blood supply, mimicking the dynamic dynamics of circulation within the body. 
 
Until now, researchers have kept an isolated pig’s brain alive for five hours with minimal alterations. Their goal is to gain a fresh understanding of the mechanisms of the brain through these experiments. “This novel method enables research that focuses on the brain independent of the body, allowing us to answer physiological questions in a way that has never been done," says Dr. Juan Pascual, one of the lead researchers. 
 
 
10. Most-complete human brain map ever

Recently, researchers introduced the most complete map of the human brain to date, illustrating the layout of 3,300 distinct types of brain cells, many of which were previously undiscovered by science. This atlas comprises neurons, responsible for transmitting chemical and electrical signals, as well as non-neuronal cells. 
 
 "It's not just an atlas," said Ed Lein, a neuroscientist at the Allen Institute for Brain Science and one of the researchers involved in this study. "It's really opening up a whole new field, where you can now look with extremely high cellular resolution in brains of species where this typically hasn't been possible in the past." 
 
The study was conducted as part of a National Institutes of Health initiative called the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative Cell Census Network. The project was launched in 2017 with the aim of categorizing the cells found in the brains of mice, humans, and primates other than humans.

The problem arises when there's overproduction of it, causing it to break down the walls of the intestinal lining and enter the blood stream, possibly leading to leaky gut syndrome. This overproduction can be triggered by changes in the body's natural pH balance, which can occur for several different reasons as outlined below. 
 
First and foremost, it is important not to confuse Candida Albicans with Candida Overgrowth Syndrome (COS). The latter is a chronic condition that is set off by the aforementioned overproduction. In that case, symptoms are markedly worse and could include the development of new sensitivities, allergies or intolerances to certain foods, such as eggs, dairy, gluten, and corn.

What are the causes of candida infections?
Candida infections can result from a range of causes, such as our choice of diet. Excessive consumption of sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol are possible contributors to yeast growth. Other causes include the following: 
 
1. Use of broad-spectrum antibiotics: This type of medication can kill off both good and bad bacteria in the body, especially if it's being overused. 
 
2. Use of birth control pills: Being on birth control while consuming a diet that's high in refined sugar makes you more susceptible to candida. 
 
3. Use of oral corticosteroids: If you suffer from asthma and use corticosteroid inhalers to treat it, make sure that you gargle after each time you use them to get rid of any leftover chemicals. Failing to do so increases the risk of candida. 
 
4. Use of cancer treatments: Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation can kill off good bacteria in the body that naturally fight candida. 
 
5. Diabetes: Candida is a type of yeast, and sugar feeds yeast. This means that diabetics are at higher risk of developing candida overgrowth syndrome. 
 
6. Weakened immune system: This includes anyone from infants to the elderly, as well as those who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS or any other inflammatory or autoimmune condition. 
 
What are the symptoms? 
People who have candida usually experience more than one symptom simultaneously, making it difficult for them to identify a definite underlying cause, as well as making it for harder for doctors to diagnose it definitively. While symptoms vary from one person to another, here is a list of the most prevalent ones:

1. Chronic fatigue 
People who suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are more susceptible to candida. They experience constant exhaustion that is impossible to overcome, regardless of how much sleep they get. It lasts for a minimum of six months, and it is often associated with joint pain, headaches, sore throats, concentration and memory problems. 
 
 2. Mood disorders 
 It's quite common for people suffering from candida to experience drastic mood swings. The infection can also cause irritability, anxiety, panic attacks, and even depression. Although these symptoms can be attributed to a variety of ailments, they are common in individuals that have candida. This is especially true if they experience them in conjunction with the other symptoms in this list.

3. Recurring vaginal and urinary tract infections  
The presence of candida can trigger infections in the vaginal and urinary tract. Visit your doctor if you happen to be experiencing them frequently - it could be candida that's triggering them. Candida can also be sexually transmitted, so ensure that your underwear or pantyhose isn't too tight. In addition, you should avoid hot baths if you're diagnosed with candida, because it can worsen the problem. 
 
4. Oral thrush 
 Oral thrush is a yeast infection that develops in the mouth, potentially affecting other mucous membranes in the body, such as the vaginal membrane. It can be brought on by the use of medications for other ailments, as aforementioned. It can also be transmitted through saliva and even when giving birth. If the problem is not treated promptly, it can spread to other organs such as the lungs, the liver, the digestive tract, and even the valves of the heart. 
 
To treat oral thrush, combine three drops of clove oil with a tablespoon coconut oil. Swish the mixture in your mouth for 20 minutes. You can also reap further benefits from doing this by adding lavender essential oil. The latter halts candida growth, thus stopping it from spreading. 
 
 5. Sinus infections 
Another symptom of candida can show up in your sinuses. Problems with your sinuses can trigger other symptoms, such as congestion, a persistent cough, seasonal allergies, postnasal drip, and general flu-like symptoms. If you frequently experience such problems, you should get checked by your doctor for a possible candida infection. 
 
 6. Intestinal distress 
If you happen to observe unusual intestinal changes in your body, such as burping, bloating, persistent flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, or stomach cramps, it's possible that the root cause is candida. These symptoms arise as a consequence of yeast disrupting intestinal function. Normally, individuals who suffer from candida feel a huge difference after it has been treated successfully.

7. Brain fog

Although it's often omitted from lists of symptoms of candida overgrowth, brain fog, just like mood swings and chronic fatigue, can actually be one of the most pronounced effects of the infection. Brain fog is characterized by poor physical coordination, a lack of focus, poor memory and concentration difficulties. 
 
8. Skin and nail fungal infections 
Fungal infections on the skin or nails may be as a result of candida. These include athlete's foot, toenail fungus, and other common infections. If you observe these along with other common candida symptoms, especially over a prolonged period, make sure you get checked for candida by your doctor.

9. Hormonal imbalance One of the byproducts of candida can mimic estrogen, and an overproduction of this can potentially lead to hormonal imbalance. This means you might experience more migraines, mood swings, PMS, a low sex drive, water retention, endometriosis, difficulty losing weight, and in some cases, even early menopause. 
 
How can it be treated?

Cure 1: The candida cleanse 

You can cleanse your body in one of two ways - either using liquids, or salads. These to provide you with enough bacteria to fight candida. 
 
Option 1: Liquids-only candida cleanse (1-2 days) Make a vegetable broth from organic onions, garlic, celery, kale, sea salt and pure water. Let it simmer and then strain, removing the vegetables. You may refrigerate and eat throughout the day. Drink plenty of water to get rid of unwanted toxins. 
 
Option 2: Raw salads and steamed vegetables (3-5 days) Eliminate grains, sugar, fruit, starch, and alcohol from your diet. Base your diet on fresh, organic steamed vegetables. Avoid starchy vegetables such as carrots, radishes, beets, sweet potatoes and white potatoes, as these may contain amounts of sugars that could feed the candida. Also, drink lots of water. 


Cure 2: The candida diet 
This remedy is designed to boost the immune system by substituting certain foods, which contribute to the growth of the infection, with healthier alternatives. 
 
Simply, eliminate sugar, alcohol and refined carbohydrates, and replace with organic vegetables, including carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, and asparagus. Eat fermented vegetables, such as Kimichi and sauerkraut. 
 
Add cultured dairy to your diet, such as goat milk kefir. This will help kill the candida infection in your system. Drink unsweetened cranberry juice. Doing so will create an acidic environment in your body, thus deterring candida growth.



Cure 3: Supplements, essential oils, and coconut oil  
This will guide you in using the right natural products to expunge or prevent candida growth in your body. 
 
Use coconut oil both as a dietary supplement or even as an ointment. This oil has antimicrobial properties that will help your body fight off candida growth. Include milk thistle in your diet to cleanse your liver of traces of any medical treatments such as steroids, birth control pills, chemotherapy and so on. Supply your body with a lot of vitamin C to bolster the adrenal glands and boost your immune system. The recommended daily intake of this vitamin is two doses of 1,000 milligrams. 
 
Use clove oil, oregano oil, and myrrh oil to help you quash the growth of fungi and other parasites, including candida. Lavender oil is also found to be useful here due to its antimicrobial properties. You can use a mixture of a few drops of clove oil or lavender oil combined with coconut oil. These essential oils are very powerful and effective, so it is recommended that they are taken internally for no more than 10 days.

12 nail changes a dermatologist should examine

Have you noticed a change to any of your nails lately? A change in color, texture, or shape can be harmless, but it can also be a sign of disease. If you notice any of the following changes to a fingernail or toenail, it’s time to see a board-certified dermatologist.

If you cannot think of what could may have caused your nails to grow slowly or stop growing, see your dermatologist or primary care doctor. Once you find and get rid of the cause, nails often start growing normally.
