CAUSES OF SLEEPINESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Though many of us go to bed on time, get up in the usual time, still feel sleepy throughout the day, why? Maybe as one doesn't get sound sleep due to various reasons.

1) Lack of sound sleep- This can happen due to sleep apnea or insomnia. Some or not able to sleep as once they get up to go to relieve themselves at night, find it difficult to get back to sleep. When has dreams, also one feels they've not slept soundly and feel tired.

2) Chronic fatigue- Fatigue can happen due to various health conditions, if one is anemic, or suffers from cancer, hypothyroidism, rheumatism- when the constant pain, makes one feel tired.

3) Depression is a big problem now. People get depressed due to professional, health or other problems. Due to job insecurity, some get into depression, or when one has heart problem or any other incurable disease, they easily get into depression, if they're not positive.

4) Diabetes- When one suffers from diabetes, one has to get up a number of times to visit the loo, so they've very disturbed sleep, it makes them tired. Added to that diabetics get cramps, due to loss of magnesium due to frequent urination, which again leads to disturbed sleep.

5) Watching some horror movie or serial- when one watches a horror movie, just before going to bed, their mind isn't at rest, as they get flashback about the scary scenes, then those who are not brave, imagine themselves in those scenes, get scared, and lose their sleep !

Always try to find the cause of your problem and see how best to overcome by it by avoiding all those things which can disturb your sleep. Go to bed after some meditation, drink enough water, so you're hydrated well. Never think of your problems before going to bed, remember that if there is no solution to some problems, there is no point in worrying about it. God knows what is best for us, so leave it to God to decide the best, that faith in Almighty will make you relaxed to sleep well.

It is best to consult your physician, if you've any underlying problems, and take necessary treatment for the same. Good luck for sound sleep !

Losing ability to smell, could be the first indication of dementia

Losing the ability to smell peppermint, fish, orange, rose and leather could be an accurate early warning sign of dementia, according to a new study.

The ability of nearly 3,000 people aged 57 to 85 to detect these five odours was tested by scientists.

When they returned about five years later, almost all of the people who had not been able to name a single one of the five scents had dementia, as did nearly 80 per cent of those who gave only one or two correct answers.

However other experts said people could lose their sense of smell for other reasons with one writing that the study did not support the idea that “smell testing would be a useful tool for predicting the onset of dementia”.

One of the researchers,a Prof. said: “Loss of the sense of smell is a strong signal that something has gone wrong and significant damage has been done.

“This simple smell test could provide a quick and inexpensive way to identify those who are already at high risk.

“Of all human senses, smell is the most undervalued and underappreciated – until it’s gone.”

However he added: “Our test simply marks someone for closer attention. Much more work would need to be done to make it a clinical test. But it could help find people who are at risk. Then we could enrol them in early-stage prevention trials.”

In the study, 78 per cent of those tested had a normal sense of smell, correctly identifying either four or five of the odours.

Nearly 19 per cent got two or three out of five correct, while 2.2 per cent could only identify one and one per cent were unable to tell what any of the scents were.

“These results show that the sense of smell is closely connected with brain function and health,” Prof. said.

“We think smell ability specifically, but also sensory function more broadly, may be an important early sign, marking people at greater risk for dementia.

“We need to understand the underlying mechanisms so we can understand neurodegenerative disease and hopefully develop new treatments and preventative interventions.”

Reusing Cooking Oil May Harm Your Heart Health

Lifestyle diseases are one of the major threats to human health. Heart ailments account for a large chunk of the global mortality rate. According to a latest report not only what you eat but how you cook your food may also affect your health. Reusing cooking oil is one of the commonest practices across the country which needs to stop.

"Most people simply do not have any idea of what they are eating. Trans-fats which are the most harmful and leading cause of heart diseases is entering into the body of humans in so many ways. One should choose cooking oils which are well balanced and has less than 4 gm of saturated fats," said a Prof.

Trans-fats are the most dangerous type of fats. Once oil is overcooked or cooked again, the level of trans-fat present goes up. Mustard and olive oil are traditionally considered good for health. Olive oil should never be used for frying purposes whereas mustard oil can be mixed with ghee to balance its fat. Experts believe vanaspati to be the most dangerous cooking agent of all.

"Our food habits are such that heart disease becomes common. Even in market, biscuits and fried snacks are cooked in vanaspati so that they can be preserved for long. This again leads to intake of trans fats, a leading killer,"Dr. told .



Experts shared that only 13% of educated individuals in the country pay attention to their diet and what they are consuming on an everyday basis. While the number of bypass surgeries have seen an increase in the country, the number of young adults with ailments like hypertension and high cholesterol levels is also rising.

Meditation to CV Risk-Reduction Strategies

Overall, studies of meditation suggest a possible benefit on cardiovascular risk, although the overall quality and, in some cases, quantity of study data are modest," the writing group says. More specifically, meditation may be associated with decreased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression and improved quality of sleep and overall well-being, they note.

 Meditation may also help lower blood pressure, although there is insufficient evidence to determine whether or how much meditation may lower blood pressure in a given individual, the group says.

The data also suggest that meditation may help individuals quit smoking and might be associated with a decreased risk of MI, although the studies on this were limited and more studies are needed before any conclusions can be made, the group says.


"I found the results of our analyses encouraging in that regular meditation may decrease cardiovascular risk," a Dr. said, "although clearly more research is needed before any definitive conclusions may be made.

"Our message to patients and practitioners is that standard, guideline-directed lifestyle and medicinal interventions remain the primary way to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease, but for those interested in regular meditation, at this time this seems a reasonable adjunctive lifestyle modification," Dr. said.

"Future studies, to the degree possible, should utilize randomized study design, be adequately powered to meet the primary study outcome, strive to achieve low dropout rates, include long-term follow-up, and be performed by those without inherent bias in outcome," the writing group concludes.

Why The Science World Is Freaking Out Over This Answer to Antibiotic Resistance

A 25-year-old student has come up with a way to fight drug-resistant superbugs without antibiotics.

The new approach has so far only been tested in the lab and on mice, but it could offer a potential solution to antibiotic resistance, which is now getting so bad that the United Nations recently declared it a "fundamental health" to global health.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria already kill around 700,000 people each year, but a recent study suggests that number could rise to around 10 million by 2050. 

In addition to common hospital superbug, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), scientists are now also concerned that gonorrhoea is about to become resistant to all remaining drugs.  

But  a 25-year-old PhD student  has developed a star-shaped polymer that can kill six different superbug strains without antibiotics, simply by ripping apart their cell walls.

"We've discovered that [the polymers] actually target the bacteria and kill it in multiple ways,". "One method is by physically disrupting or breaking apart the cell wall of the bacteria. This creates a lot of stress on the bacteria and causes it to start killing itself."

The research has been hailed by scientists in the field as a breakthrough that cold change the face of modern medicine.

Before we get too carried away, it's still very early days. So far, she has only tested her star-shaped polymers on six strains of drug-resistant bacteria in the lab, and on one superbug in live mice.

But in all experiments, they've been able to kill their targeted bacteria - and generation after generation don't seem to develop resistance to the polymers.

The polymers - which they call SNAPPs, or structurally nano-engineered antimicrobial peptide polymers - work by directly attacking, penetrating, and then de-stabilising the cell membrane of bacteria.

Unlike antibiotics, which 'poison' bacteria, and can also affect healthy cells in the area, the SNAPPs that Lam has designed are so large that they don't seem to affect healthy cells at all. 

"With this polymerised peptide we are talking the difference in scale between a mouse and an elephant,""The large peptide molecules can't enter the [healthy] cells."

While the results are positive so far, it's too early to get excited about what this could mean for humans, says Cyrille Boyer from the University of New South Wales in Australia, who wasn't involved in the research. 

"The main advantage seems to be they can kill bacteria more effectively and selectively [than other peptides]", before adding that the team is a long way off clinical applications.

But what's awesome about the new project is that, while other teams are looking for new antibiotics,  she has found a completely different approach. And it could make all the different in the coming post-antibiotic world. That's what she's hoping, anyway. 

"For a time, I had to come in at 4am in the morning to look after my mice and my cells," she told. "I wanted to be involved in some kind of research that would help solve problems ... I really hope that the polymers we are trying to develop here could eventually be a solution."
