These 5 Protein-Rich Foods May Make You Gain Weight

Protein is one of our major macro nutrient. Many opt for protein rich diet, to help to reduce. Protein is essential for our body building processes.  Proteins help in building lean muscle and may also help you keep fat from accumulating. This nutrient is also important for curbing hunger pangs and keeping your energy levels up. In health and nutrition literature, the benefits of a diet rich in protein are repeated again and again and loud enough for all of us to internalise. The recommended daily allowance of protein is 0.8 gm per kg of your body weight. But eating unscrupulous amounts of protein is not going to help you bulk up or lose weight. It's important to be mindful of the quantity of protein you include in your daily diet, and also keep a check on how fattening or low calorie is your source of protein.

A number of protein rich foods may actually end up causing weight gain, due to the presence of excessive fats or added sugars in them. So you should take into consideration all the nutritional facts about any protein-rich food before adding it to your diet. You may consume fatty protein-rich foods, but make sure you keep the portions in check, in order to avoid gaining weight.

Here are some protein-rich foods that may be unhealthy and fattening:

1. Packaged Yogurt

Store-bought yogurts often boast of high-protein levels, but don't go eating it every day as it may contain preservatives and added sugars. They also have added artificial flavours and, hence, are unhealthy for you. Opt for homemade curd or yogurt instead.
ps- in my recipe blog, I've given an easy make to make yoghurt at home, at times even if you don't have the starter !

2. Protein Bars

A lot of so-called energy and protein bars have added sugars, trans-fats and preservatives. They may seem like convenient snacking options after working out, but they may actually destroy your efforts in the gym.

3. Peanuts

A 100-gm of peanuts contains as much as 26 gm of protein (as per the USDA data), but peanuts are also incredibly high in fats and calories. So, you may have a handful if you feel like, but don't make a habit out of munching on these legumes, as it may lead to weight gain.

4. Protein Shakes

Protein shakes are also used as recovery drinks after an intense workout, but they may contain high amounts of sugar as well. Make sure to check the label on your favoured brand of protein shake, before downing it post-workout.

5. Processed Cheese

Cheese contains good amounts of protein, but it is important to be discerning about the type of cheese you go for. Processed cheese is a definite no-go if you're looking to keep your weight under check.

Proteins are essential for the body, but what is more important is to be mindful of all the nutrients present on your plate. Don't overload on the wrong kinds of calories, in the process of loading up on protein!

Reusing Cooking Oil May Harm Your Heart Health

Lifestyle diseases are one of the major threats to human health. Heart ailments account for a large chunk of the global mortality rate. They are caused by disorders of the heart and blood vessels, and include coronary heart disease (heart attacks), cerebrovascular disease (stroke), raised blood pressure (hypertension), peripheral artery disease, rheumatic heart disease, congenital heart disease and heart failure. A healthy lifestyle can go a long way in ensuring a healthy heart. Experts press for regular exercising and consuming a balanced diet to keep heart ailments at bay. Making lifestyle tweaks like saying no to smoking and monitoring alcohol intake are also some of the ways through which risk of heart diseases can be kept in check. According to a latest report not only what you eat but how you cook your food may also affect your health. Reusing cooking oil is one of the commonest practices across the country which needs to stop.

"Most people simply do not have any idea of what they are eating. Trans-fats which are the most harmful and leading cause of heart diseases is entering into the body of humans in so many ways. One should choose cooking oils which are well balanced and has less than 4 gm of saturated fats," said a Prof.

Trans-fats are the most dangerous type of fats. Once oil is overcooked or cooked again, the level of trans-fat present goes up. Mustard and olive oil are traditionally considered good for health. Olive oil should never be used for frying purposes whereas mustard oil can be mixed with ghee to balance its fat. Experts believe vanaspati to be the most dangerous cooking agent of all.

"Our food habits are such that heart disease becomes common. Even in market, biscuits and fried snacks are cooked in vanaspati so that they can be preserved for long. This again leads to intake of trans fats, a leading killer,"Dr. told .

Experts shared that only 13% of educated individuals in the country pay attention to their diet and what they are consuming on an everyday basis. While the number of bypass surgeries have seen an increase in the country, the number of young adults with ailments like hypertension and high cholesterol levels is also rising.

Reducing your trans fat intake may help ward off heart attack, stroke

Heart attacks and strokes are two primary causes of deaths around the world. An unhealthy lifestyle is often the main reason for them to occur and most of it has to do with poor eating habits, accompanied by little or no physical activity.

Poor eating habits include the consumption of more than the advised amount of trans fats, which is as unhealthy as one can go.
Trans fats, also known as trans-unsaturated fatty acids or trans fatty acids, are a type of unsaturated fat that are widely produced from vegetable fats.

It is a known fact that excessive consumption of trans fats can lead to many health issues which can also prove fatal in the long run, for instance, coronary heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, liver dysfunction and infertility among others.

However, a research has found that reducing your unstaurated fat intake can help you keep heart attacks and strokes at bay, since they are less common in those among people living in areas that restrict trans fats in foods compared to residents in areas without restrictions.

"Our study highlights the power of public policy to impact the cardiovascular health of a population," said lead author Eric Brandt from Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, US.

Fried foods, chips, crackers and baked goods are products that trans fats are commonly found in. Cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death worldwide, is associated with the consumption of trans fats.

Some communities in the US -- most notably New York City -- have eliminated the use of trans fats in restaurants and eateries in recent years.

To study the impact of restricting trans fats, researchers compared outcomes for people living in New York counties with and without the restrictions.

Using data from the state department of health and census estimates between 2002 and 2013, the researchers focused on hospital admissions for heart attack and stroke.

They found that three or more years after the restrictions were implemented, people living in areas with the bans had significantly fewer hospitalizations for heart attack and stroke when compared to similar urban areas where no limits existed.

The decline for the combined conditions was 6.2 percent, said the study published in the journal JAMA Cardiology.

"It is a pretty substantial decline," Brandt said.

"The results are impressive, given that the study focused on trans fatty acid bans in restaurants, as opposed to complete bans that included food bought in stores," senior author Tamar S. Polonsky, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago, added.

"If we enact a more complete restriction on trans fatty acids, it could mean even more widespread benefits for people," Polonsky said.

WHAT ALL CAN DAMAGE YOUR LIVER

Sugar is equally bad for the teeth and liver ! The liver uses one type of sugar, called fructose, to make fat. Too much refined sugar and high-fructose corn syrup causes a fatty buildup that can lead to liver diseases.

Even herbal supplements can be bad for health, including liver, due to the side-effects they've. Some people take an herb called kava kava for menopause symptoms or to help them relax. But studies show that it can keep the liver from working right. That can lead to hepatitis and liver failure.

NAFLD- The extra fat can build up in your liver cells and lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Due to which, your liver may swell. Over time, it can harden and scar liver tissue, called  cirrhosis. You are more likely to get NAFLD if you are overweight or obese, middle-aged, or have diabetes. Diet and exercise can stop the disease.

It is always better to get our dose of Vitamins and minerals from plant sources. If one takes Vitamin A supplement in high doses, it can create problems for the liver. Best, to consult your doctor, even before taking any supplement.

If one drinks too many soft drinks, it can affect the liver, as soft drinks contain more sugar, which is bad for the liver. Best to avoid or restrict greatly one's intake of soft drinks.

Too much of acetaminophen -- for instance, a pill for your headache and something else for your cold, and both have acetaminophen in it -- it can harm your liver. Check the dose and how much is OK to take in one day. Stick to those limits, and you should be fine.

Trans-fats are bad for health, especially liver, as too much of trans-fats in foods - cookies, pastries, desserts, will lead to weight gain, which is bad for liver again.

Hepatitis C is transmitted through infected blood, either transfusion or even a small prick from as infected needle to a nurse or a doctor.
Keep your alcohol intake to the minimum if you want a good liver.

Inflammation is a condition in which parts of the body become red, swollen, and hot. These symptoms, which are often accompanied by pain, are caused as a reaction to injury or infection. It's easy to spot inflamed areas when they are on the outside of the body. But what about internal inflammation? This can be caused by a number of reasons. One way to prevent and reduce it is to eat lots of foods that fight inflammation from within the body.
For this reason, it is important to know which foods help you fight inflammation, and which are the ones that cause it.

10 foods that cause inflammation

1. Sugar -  It's incredibly hard to avoid sugar - we find it everywhere. However, a lot of it may cause inflammation, so it's important to control your intake of processed sugar and opt for sweet fruit instead.
2. Common Cooking Oils -  Safflower, soy, sunflower, corn, and cottonseed. These oils not only contribute to the onset of inflammation, but they are also made with cheap ingredients that are bad for your health.
3. Trans Fats - Trans fats increase bad cholesterol, and promote inflammation, obesity and resistance to insulin. They are in fried foods, fast foods, and commercially baked goods, including peanut butter and items prepared with partially hydrogenated oil, margarine, and vegetable oil.

4. Red and Processed Meat - Red meat contains a molecule that humans don't naturally produce, called Neu5GC. Once you ingest this compound, your body develops antibodies that may trigger constant inflammatory responses. Reduce red meat consumption and replace it with poultry, fish and lean cuts of red meat, once a week at most.
5. Feedlot-Raised Meat - Animals who are fed with grains like soy and corn are likely to experience inflammation. These animals also gain excess fat and are injected with hormones and antibiotics. Always opt for organic, free-range meats that have been fed natural diets.
6. Dairy - While some yogurts are okay, the body generally has a hard time processing dairy products. Milk is a common allergen that may cause inflammation, stomach problems, skin rashes, hives and even breathing difficulties. Remember, milk is good for children but not as great for adults.

7. Alcohol - Regular consumption of alcohol causes irritation and inflammation to numerous organs, which can lead to cancer.
8. Refined Grains - "Refined" products have no fiber and have a high glycemic index. They are everywhere: white rice, white flour, white bread, pasta, pastries... Try and replace with minimally processed grains.
9. Artificial Food Additives - Aspartame and MSG are two common food additives that can trigger inflammation responses. Try and omit them from your diet completely.
10. Undiagnosed Allergy - Do you constantly have headaches or feel tired? Sometimes, you may develop an allergy to a type of food and not even know it. Coffee, certain vegetables, cheese...they might be a trigger you aren't even aware of. Try and take a few foods out to see how you feel. Slowly incorporate them back in to see if there might be a hidden culprit lurking in your diet!

10 foods that naturally fight inflammation

1. Salmon - Salmon contains Omega 3 amino acids and has been known to treat a multitude of health issues. If you don't like eating fish, you can try a good, high-quality supplement. Try and integrate fish oil or oily fish into your meals twice a week to reap its benefits.
2. Garlic - Although garlic is more well-known, research is actually a bit more inconsistent about its benefits. But it can help reduce inflammation, control blood sugar and fight infections.
3. Extra Virgin Olive Oil - This oil has been the key to longevity in Mediterranean cultures for hundreds of years. The oil provides healthy amounts of anti-inflammatory fats and can lower the risk of asthma and arthritis, as well as protect the heart and blood vessels.

4. Sweet Potato - Complex carbs, beta-carotene, vitamins B6 and C, and fiber - these potatoes will work to heal inflammation raging through the body.

5. Blueberries - These berries not only fight inflammation, but are also excellent anti-aging agents for the brain and, above all, they fight diseases like cancer and dementia.

Tip: Best to go for organic berries, as regular berries' small size makes it hard to wash away the pesticides.

6. Kelp - This brow algae extract has important roles to play in the prevention and treatment of liver and lung cancer. It's also a strong anti-inflammatory agent, anti-tumor, and antioxidant. This one does it all. Good sources for kelp are kombu, wakame, and arame.

7. Ginger - Regular ginger contains a multitude of potential health benefits. It fights inflammation, it helps control your blood sugar levels, and as a tea - it's really good for your diet.

8. Turmeric - Research is constantly mentioning the benefits of this powerful spice from Asia, which is a strong contender in the anti-inflammatory ring, thanks to its active ingredient - curcumin. This strong ingredient is believed to also fight against the development of Alzheimer's disease, counter heart problems, and act as a natural pain reliever.

9. Green tea - There are few drinks proven to be healthier than green tea. It contains so many anti-inflammatory flavonoids, that drinking it is actually said to lower the risk of certain cancers.

10. Cruciferous Vegetables - Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, kale, and cauliflower are all vegetables that are loaded with high amounts of antioxidants. They are considered natural detoxifiers and can rid the body of harmful materials.
