VARIOUS USES OF CASTOR OIL !

This medicinal concoction is filled with Vitamin E, making it a suitable remedy for a number of other things (which don't require you to take it orally). It is also packed with proteins, minerals and has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties.
Use it to relieve arthritis pain
To get some relief from pain caused by arthritis, massage castor oil onto those achy joints. For added benefits, create a paste by mixing some castor oil with turmeric or cayenne pepper. Be sure to keep it away from your eyes, particularly if using cayenne pepper.
Use it to promote hair growth Whether you want thicker hair, or would like to cover up a balding area on your scalp, massage some castor oil into the area for about 6 minutes every day to promote natural hair growth. It can also be used on the eyebrows. For a thicker brow line, just massage a few drops for a couple of minutes every day.
Use it to promote healthy bowels
Ingesting castor oil is a great way to alleviate constipation. On this note, however, caution is advised - the oil does work extremely well as a laxative. Simply mix a teaspoon into orange or cranberry juice each morning to keep your bowels working regularly.
Use it to remove warts and skin tags
To remove unsightly warts and skin tags, opt for castor oil. Just apply the oil to the wart or skin tag every day for a few weeks - you should begin to see the mark disappear. Unfortunately, castor oil will not work on moles, so be sure you know what you are trying to remove before using it.

Use it to relieve calluses and corns
When applied directly to the affected area, castor oil will help get rid of calluses. Simply massage a bit of the oil into the corns to help alleviate the pain and the swelling that they cause. Though it may take a couple of applications, you will see them disappear over time.
Use it to promote healthy skin
One of its lesser known uses, castor oil works wonderfully at eliminating and preventing wrinkles. It is also ideal for pregnant women - rubbing castor oil onto the skin can help improve elasticity and prevent stretch marks caused by pregnancy. For a youthful glow, just apply it directly to your skin.
Use it to relieve pain from scratches
To relieve pain from scratches and other abrasions, opt for castor oil. Simply add a few drops to your scratches, allowing the healing properties of the oils to heal them. Castor oil is also a great option for treating ringworm and other fungal ailments.
Use it to relieve sore muscles
Castor oil makes for a wonderful massage oil that can be used to alleviate sore muscles. Just apply it to the affected area and massage. It may also be used as an oil for general massages - due to its Vitamin E content, it is great for your skin.
Use it to treat hemorrhoids
Castor oil is great at shrinking hemorrhoids and alleviating the pain and itching that they cause. Simply soak a cotton ball in the oil and apply it to your hemorrhoids. You may leave the cotton ball for about 15 minutes or so. It is important to note however, that this only works for hemorrhoids that are outside the body.
Use it to treat insomnia
If you've been suffering from sleepless nights of late, castor oil is an effective remedy. Just rub a bit on your eyelids before getting into bed (make sure that you don't actually get any in your eyes). The castor oil will help bring about a peaceful night's sleep and will have you feeling refreshed in the morning.
Use it to soothe tired eyes
In removing tiredness from around the eyes, castor oil works much like petroleum jelly. Before you go to bed at night, rub a little around your eyes and just a tad on your eyelashes, allowing the oil to soak in overnight, leaving you looking and feeling a little more refreshed in the morning. Again, just be careful not to get it in your eyes.

Health Benefits of Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is perhaps the most genuine and versatile cure-all plant there is, offering a plethora of health benefits - the word 'vera' after all, does mean true or genuine. In the past, it was considered to be the plant of immortality by the Egyptians, and has been used since time immemorial for its soothing and curing properties.

The Aloe vera plant is luscious with thick, fleshy stems and spiny leaves. The plant's miraculous benefits are located within the stems, which contain aloe juice and gel - a substance that is used in numerous medicinal, cosmetic, and health treatments.

Aloe vera juice can be bought (preferably organic, and pure) from a health shop or a well-stocked supermarket. Alternatively, if you've got a couple of plants at home, you can just as easily make your own juice.

Making Aloe Vera Juice
  1. Cut and open a few stems of the plant from the middle section. Opt for the outer stems as they are the most mature, and have the highest concentration of antioxidants.
  2. Upon squeezing the stem, aloe gel will ooze out. Store it in a bowl, then put the gel in a blender and add 1 cup of water.
  3. To get pure aloe vera juice, blend the ingredients and consume within 3-4 days, before it loses its antioxidants.

What Makes Aloe Vera so Nutritious?
Aloe vera (both juice and gel) is packed with antioxidants and antibiotics and works as a stimulator of cell growth. It also has scar and pain inhibitor properties. The entire leaf is at times used to treat ulcerative colitis, metastatic cancer, infectious disease and chemotherapy treatment. The plant is also rich in the following vitamins and minerals, making it a highly nutritious ingredient.
  • Calcium

HOME REMDIES FOR CRACKED HEELS

Cracked heels, or heel fissures, are a common condition in which the skin begins to break along the outer edge of the heel. The skin there becomes very dry, hard and flaky, which causes the fissures to occur. Some of these fissures may even lead to painful bleeding.

What Causes Cracked Heels?
Cracked heels can happen to anyone for a variety of reasons, but here are some of the most commonly found responsible factors:

  • Walking barefoot for extended periods of time
  • Regular use of sandals
  • Living in dry climates
  • Wearing open backed shoes
  • Thick, hard and inflexible skin around the heels
  • Walking or standing on your heels for a long time
  • Pregnancy
  • Lack of proper support from footwear around the heel
  • Prolonged standing on hard floors
  • Inactive sweat glands
  • Poor foot hygiene
  • Being obese or overweight
  • Athlete's Foot, eczema or other skin conditions
  • Deficiency in minerals, vitamins, or zinc
  • Thyroid problems or Diabetes
  •  Flat feet or high arched heels

How Can You Treat Cracked Heels?
One of the most important habits to adopt if you have cracked heels, or have had it in the past, is to keep your feet moisturized at all time. Use a soft foot file on your cracked heels to reduce the development of fissures and to remove dry and dead skin cells. Remember, getting rid of cracked heels can be a bit of a process, and the condition will not disappear overnight if it is quite bad, but regular use of pumice stone, while having bath, will surely help.

1. Use Oils
First clean your feet with soap and water and pat them dry. If you already have cracks in your heels, rub your feet down for a few minutes with a pumice stone to get rid of the dry skin. Then, clean the area with a tissue and apply the oils to any cracks or sores on your heels. Rub the oils in liberally and leave on your feet overnight. For effective results, apply oil each night for a week and you will experience a dramatic improvement in your cracked heels.
2. Ripe Bananas
Bananas can be an excellent moisturizer if they are used correctly. Mash up the banana and apply the mixture to your dry and cracked heels. Leave it on your feet for 15 minutes, then wash the mixture off with warm water. Later, use cold water to wash off the remainder and to refresh your feet.
3. Paraffin Wax
If you experience pain from cracked heels, paraffin wax can give you almost instant relief. Mix the paraffin with coconut or mustard oil and then heat it up until the wax melts. Use the resulting liquid and apply it to your feet to be left overnight and wash it off in the morning. You'll be amazed at the results!
4. Lemon Juice
Applying lemon juice to cracked heels will soften the skin as lemon has acidic properties. Stick your feet in a bucket of lukewarm water and lemon juice for 10 to 15 minutes to hydrate your feet. Once you finish, clean your feet with a pumice stone and pat your feet dry.
5. Rice Flour With Honey and Vinegar
This is a great natural scrub for removing dead skin cells. To make the scrub, take 2 tablespoons of rice flour and mix it with 2-3 tablespoons of honey and vinegar. This should make a thick paste. Then, soak your feet in warm water for 10 minutes, apply the scrub on your heels and wash it off with warm water once it's dry.
6. Honey
Using just honey alone can also aid your cracked heels because it has antibacterial and moisturizing properties. When you soak your feet, mix 2-3 tablespoons of honey into the warm water and soak your feet for 15 minutes. This will leave your feet feeling moist and supple.
7. Salt Water
Believe it or not, this is an excellent remedy for dry and cracking heels, and it may be why most of the beach bums you know have soft, baby-like feet. Place your feet into a bucket of salty warm water and leave them there for 15 minutes. Now remove your feet and place them in a bucket of cold water for 10 minutes. This will improve the blood circulation to your feet.

8. Indian Lilac or Neem Leaves
If you are able to purchase this herb fresh or have a paste available to you at your natural foods store, this solution is most effective in the ridding of cracked heels for an extended period of time. Apply a mixture of neem leaf powder and turmeric powder to the cracked area of your heels. Leave the mixture there for 30-45 minutes and wash away the paste when you are done. Pat your feet dry. You should see results in only a few days
9. Petroleum Jelly
If you regularly scrub your cracked heels with a pumice stone, and then apply petroleum jelly, this will help you get rid of the dryness. After you have scrubbed your feet with a pumice stone, apply petroleum jelly to them before you go to bed. You will wake with softer and mostly crack-free heels.
10. Rosewater and Glycerin
Mix together equal amounts of rosewater and glycerin and rub the mixture over your cracked heels. If any of the fissures are open or bleeding, this could sting as a result of the glycerin (it contains alcohol). This should keep your skin soft for hours, and the mixture can be easily applied before you put on sandals or walk around barefoot outside.
11. Drinking Water
It is important to keep your body hydrated, as this will prevent your feet from going dry. You should drink 12-15 glasses of water a day to give your heels the necessary elasticity so they won't crack in the future.
12. Watch Your Calcium Intake
To improve the state of your cracked heels, you need to watch your calcium intake. Add foods like yogurt, milk and cheese, broccoli or fish to your diet.

13. Vitamin E and Iron
By adding Vitamin E to your diet, you will significantly aid in the healing of cracked heels. Foods like vegetable oils, green vegetables, nuts and whole grains are great sources of vitamin E that you should try to incorporate into your diet. Iron is also important for curing cracked heels, so make sure that you are eating enough meat, chicken, and fish.
14. Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Foods like flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, and cold water fish are known to be rich sources of Omega 3, which helps reduce the effect of cracked heels
If you suffer from cracked heels, try some of these natural and home-made remedies, and you are sure to have soft, supple feet.

BEWARE WHILE BOILING WATER FOR MORE THAN 2 MINUTES IN THE MICROWAVE

A 26-year old man decided to have a cup of coffee.
He took a cup of water and put it in the microwave to
heat it up (something that he had done numerous times before).
I am not sure how long he set the timer for, but he wanted
to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off,
he removed the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup,
he noted that the water was not boiling, but suddenly the
water in the cup 'blew up' into his face. The cup remained
intact until he threw it out of his hand, but all the water had
flown out into his face due to the build-up of energy.
His whole face is blistered and he has 1st and 2nd
degree burns to his face which may leave scarring.

He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye.
While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to
him stated that this is a fairly common occurrence and
water (alone) should never be heated in a
microwave oven.
If water is heated in this manner, something should be
placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as a
wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc, (nothing metal).

General Electric's Response:

Thanks for contacting us; I will be happy to assist you.
The e-mail that you received is correct. Microwaved water
and other liquids do not always bubble when they
reach boiling point. They can actually get superheated and
not bubble at all. The superheated liquid will bubble up out
of the cup when it is moved or when something like a
spoon or tea bag is put into it.

To prevent this from happening and causing injury,
do not heat any liquid for more than two minutes per cup.
After heating, let the cup stand in the microwave for
 thirty seconds
before moving it or adding anything into it.

Here is what a local high school science teacher had
to say on the matter: 'Thanks for the microwave warning.
I have seen this happen before. It is caused by a
phenomenon known as super heating.
It can occur any time water is heated and
will particularly occur
if the vessel that the water is
heated in is new, or when heating a small
amount of water (less than half a cup).

What happens is that the water heats faster than
the vapor bubbles can form. If the cup is very new,
then it is unlikely to have small surface scratches
inside it that provide a place for the bubbles to form.
As the bubbles cannot form and release some of the heat
that has built up, the liquid does not boil, and the
liquid continues to heat up well past its boiling point.

What then usually happens is that the liquid is
bumped or jarred, which is just enough of a shock
to cause the bubbles to rapidly form and expel the hot liquid.
The rapid formation of bubbles is also why a
carbonated beverage
spews when opened
after
having been shaken.
If you pass this on
, you could very well
save someone from a lot of pain and suffering.

Consortium Links Omega-3s to Decreased Risk of Fatal Heart Attack

An international consortium combined findings from a number of large studies that included data on levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the tissue or blood and examined the association with heart disease over time.

The epidemiological study, conducted by the Fatty acids and Outcomes Research Consortium (FORCE), found that higher consumption of plant and seafood-based omega-3s was moderately linked to a lower risk of dying from a heart attack.

Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish, with levels most abundant in salmon, trout, anchovies, sardines and herring, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Nutrient Database. Plant-based omega-2s can be found in certain nuts and oils such as walnuts, flaxseed oil and canola oil. The researchers, led by Liana C. Del Gobbo, Ph.D., a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine and senior author Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D., dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, said that the findings support the idea that eating fish and omega-3 is an important part of a healthy diet, even though only some trials of fish oil supplements have shown benefits, while others have not.

Combined, the 19 studies centrally pooled in a meta-analysis involved 45,637 participants.  Over time, 7,973 of these people experienced a first heart attack, with 2,781 resulting in death. Patients with higher blood levels of both seafood and plant-based omega-3s were 10 percent less likely to have a fatal heart attack. For each standard deviation in levels of omega-3s the risk dropped, with those at the highest end of the spectrum seeing a decreased risk of 25 percent compared to those with the lowest levels. Interestingly, researchers did not link levels of fatty acid biomarkers to the likelihood of experiencing a nonfatal heart attack.  The authors say this might mean there is a more specific mechanism for why omega-3 helps lower risk of death.

“These new results, including many studies which previously had not reported their findings, provide the most comprehensive picture to-date of how omega-3s may influence heart disease,” Del Gobbo said in a prepared statement.  She said that the findings were consistent after considering a variety of factors including age, sex, race, diabetes, or use of cholesterol-lowering medications.

“Most prior studies of dietary fats have relied on self-reported estimates of intake,” Mozaffarian said in a statement. “This new global consortium provides an unprecedented opportunity to understand how blood biomarkers of many different fats and fatty acids relate to diverse health outcomes and many additional investigations are in progress.”

The findings were published June 27, in Jama Internal Medicine.

Simple home test could predict cancer and malaria

  • Scientists are developing new paper strips that detect cancer and malaria
  • Strips, which cost about 50 cents, require just a drop of blood
  • Once applied, the test can be sent to a lab where results are read
  • Means people would only need to see a doctor if the results were positive
  • Tests can detect any disease for which the body produces antibodies
  • Clinical trials should start within 3 years, scientists in Ohio hope

Within a few years testing cancer could be as simple as testing for diabetes.

The scientist feels that the test could be tailored to detect any disease, for which the human body produces antibodies, including ovarian cancer and cancer of the large intestine. This patent pending technology would help those people most, who don't have a regular access to the doctor and can't afford regular visits.

The technology uses wax to ink to trace the outline of channels and reservoirs on the paper. To get tested, all that a person has to do is put a drop of blood on the strip, fold it in half and mail it to the lab for testing.

The finding are published in the Journal of American Chemical Society.

New technology could deliver drugs to brain injuries

Scientists have developed a new technology that could deliver drugs to treat traumatic brain injuries resulting from car crashes, falls or violence.

The discovery provides a means of homing drugs or nanoparticles to injured areas of the brain, researchers said.

"We have found a peptide sequence of four amino acids, cysteine, alanine, glutamine, and lysine (CAQK), that recognises injured brain tissue," said Erkki Ruoslahti from Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP) in the US.

"This peptide could be used to deliver treatments that limit the extent of damage," said Ruoslahti.

Traumatic brain injuries usually result from car crashes, falls, and violence.

While the initial injury cannot be repaired, the damaging effects of breaking open brain cells and blood vessels that ensue over the following hours and days can be minimised, researchers said.

"Current interventions for acute brain injury are aimed at stabilising the patient by reducing intracranial pressure and maintaining blood flow, but there are no approved drugs to stop the cascade of events that cause secondary injury," said Aman Mann from SBP.

More than one hundred compounds are currently in preclinical tests to lessen brain damage following injury.

These candidate drugs block the events that cause secondary damage, including inflammation, high levels of free radicals, over-excitation of neurons, and signalling that leads to cell death, researchers said.

"Our goal was to find an alternative to directly injecting therapeutics into the brain, which is invasive and can add complications," said Ruoslahti.

"Using this peptide to deliver drugs means they could be administered intravenously, but still reach the site of injury in sufficient quantities to have an effect," he said.

The CAQK peptide binds to components of the meshwork surrounding brain cells called chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans. Amounts of these large, sugar-decorated proteins increase following brain injury, researchers said.

"Not only did we show that CAQK carries drug-sized molecules and nanoparticles to damaged areas in mouse models of acute brain injury, we also tested peptide binding to injured human brain samples and found the same selectivity," said Mann.

"This peptide could also be used to create tools to identify brain injuries, particularly mild ones, by attaching the peptide to materials that can be detected by medical imaging devices," added Ruoslahti.

"And, because the peptide can deliver nanoparticles that can be loaded with large molecules, it could enable enzyme or gene-silencing therapies," he said.

The findings were published in the journal Nature Communications.

To prevent cancer, increase your parsley and dill intake

You may want to add parsley and dill to your food as according to a new study, they can help fight cancer.

Scientists from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), the N D Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry (RAS), the Institute of Developmental Biology (RAS) and the Institute of Cell Biophysics (RAS) proposed an efficient approach to a novel agents with anticancer activity. A synthesis of these compounds is based on compounds extracted from parsley and dill seeds.

Researcher Alexander Kiselev said that they developed a simple method of producing glaziovianin A and its structural analogs, which inhibit the growth of human tumor cells, using feasible building blocks from nature and added that evaluation of these novel agents in vivo using validated sea urchin embryo assays yielded several promising candidates selectively affecting tubulin dynamics.

The new method is cheaper than the existing ones because it involves cheap widespread materials and also reduces the number of steps in its synthesis and the list of catalysts involved.

In addition, the team synthesized a number of structural analogs of glaziovianin A in order to find new antimitotics.

The use of sea urchin embryos was another innovation offered by the team of scientists. The cells of these sea creature embryos divide rapidly in the early stages of development, simulating the way a tumor grows. When the antimitotics were added to the sea urchins’ substratum, they started to rotate, making it easy for the researchers to evaluate the effect of new drugs and their side effects.

The results have been published in the Journal of Natural Products.

New method can kill cancer cells in two hours, shows study

The non-invasive technique involves injecting nitrobenzaldehyde into the tumour

Researchers have developed a new, non-invasive method that can kill cancer cells in two hours, an advance that may significantly help people with inoperable or hard-to-reach tumours as well as young children stricken with the deadly disease.

The method involves injecting a chemical compound, nitrobenzaldehyde, into the tumour and allowing it to diffuse into the tissue.

A beam of light is then aimed at the tissue, causing the cells to become very acidic inside and, essentially, “commit suicide”, researchers said.

Within two hours, up to 95 per cent of the targeted cancer cells are dead or are estimated to be dead, they said.
Cell suicide
“Though there are many different types of cancers, the one thing they have in common is their susceptibility to this induced cell suicide,” said Matthew Gdovin from University of Texas in the U.S.
Mr. Gdovin tested his method against triple negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive types of cancer and one of the hardest to treat. The prognosis for triple negative breast cancer is usually very poor.

After one treatment in the laboratory, he was able to stop the tumour from growing and double chances of survival in mice.
“All forms of cancer attempt to make cells acidic on the outside as a way to attract the attention of a blood vessel, which attempts to get rid of the acid,” said Mr. Gdovin.

“Instead, the cancer latches onto the blood vessel and uses it to make the tumour larger and larger,” he added.

Chemotherapy treatments target all cells in the body, and certain chemotherapeutics try to keep cancer cells acidic as a way to kill the cancer. This is what causes many cancer patients to lose their hair and become sickly. Mr. Gdovin’s method, however, is more precise and can target just the tumour.

He has now begun to test the method on drug-resistant cancer cells to make his therapy as strong as possible. He has also started to develop a nanoparticle that can be injected into the body to target metastasised cancer cells.

The nanoparticle is activated with a wavelength of light that it can pass harmlessly through skin, flesh and bone and still activate the cancer-killing nanoparticle, said Mr. Gdovin.

He hopes that his non-invasive method will help cancer patients with tumours in areas that have proven problematic for surgeons, such as the brain stem, aorta or spine.

It could also help people who have received the maximum amount of radiation treatment and can no longer cope with the scarring and pain that go along with it, or children who are at risk of developing mutations from radiation as they grow older, he said.

The findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Peripheral Neuropathy

The term Neuropathy is short for 'peripheral neuropathy'. It relates to nerve damage suffered by the peripheral nervous system, which is in charge of our nerves outside the brain and spinal cord.
Neuropathy is a complication that can be caused by a number of various conditions. Physical trauma, repetitive injury, infections, metabolic problems and exposure to toxins and some drugs can all lead to peripheral neuropathy.

Signs and symptoms of neuropathy
Neuropathy usually starts as a tingling or burning sensation at our extremities, such as fingers and toes. There is also a loss of sensation at the edge of the nerves that patients have reported feeling like they are wearing a thin stocking or glove on their hands.
The precise symptoms differ from patient to patient based on the types of nerves affected. There are three types of nerves that may be affected by neuropathy: sensory, motor and autonomic.
Sensory nerves
Sensory nerves are responsible for collecting sensory information for the body, such as touch. Neuropathy of the sensory nerves can be expressed as:
- Spreading numbness and tingling in hands and/or feet (which can spread to the arms and legs)
- Burning, sharp or electric-like pain
- Extreme sensitivity to touch
- Problems with coordination
Motor nerves
Motor nerves are the nerves responsible for activating our muscles and control movements.
- Muscle weakness
- Paralysis
Autonomic nerves
Autonomic nerves are responsible for internal actions of the body, such as regulating digestion, heat and blood pressure.
- Intolerance to heat
- Problems with digestion, bladder and bowel control
- Dizziness (or lightheadedness) brought about by problems with blood pressure.

A common cause of neuropathy: Diabetes
For diabetics, neuropathy can be quite common. That said, about 50% of diabetics who have neuropathy won't notice the symptoms, and it will stay on a very low level. For the other 50%, however, the symptoms will be unavoidable. Pain is the most common complaint, usually a 'prickling', 'stabbing' or 'burning' pain, that happens mostly at night. This, along with a numbness that feels as if the limb is 'asleep' - occurs predominantly in the toes, feet and legs.
What do doctors prescribe for this condition?
Most doctors will stick to the old medical regime of anti-depressants, anti-convulsants, steroid and cortisone injections, lidocaine patches and pain killers. These are powerful drugs that address the painful sensations for short and long term relief. However, as powerful drugs, they have a host of side-effects and must be administered very carefully. Some medical practitioners recommend electrical stimulation of the pain area and of the spine. The medical community is united in agreement that more solutions to this problem are required, but progress has been very slow from the medical and drug industry so far.

Natural solutions to neuropathy
First off, if you are suffering from diabetes related neuropathy, you must do the following:
- Give up smoking
- Cut down on alcohol consumption or give it up altogether
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Exercise
Other recommended habits for those suffering from neuropathy include: Wearing clothing that causes less irritation, such as cotton, covering the sensitive areas with wound dressing or cling film and using cold packs.
Stress relief is also a big help when it comes to neuropathy, and so relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation and acupuncture will come in handy.
 Vitamin therapy
Clinical studies have shown that certain supplements can have a cumulative effect on the symptoms and causes of neuropathy. These herbal extracts can be taken without worry that they may clash with a parallel medical treatment. Certain herbal extracts and formulas offer a level of relief that has rarely been reached by just using medical procedures. This must be taken daily to achieve the desired relief.
Vitamins B1, B2, B6 and B12
Vitamin B deficiency is one of the major causes of neuropathy, and also one of the best natural solutions. All herbal extracts contain large amounts of vitamin B1, usually in its common form of thiamine.
Recent natural medications have reverted to using benfotiamine, which has been found to be significantly more effective in delivering vitamin B than thiamine is (x3).
Stabilized R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (R-ALA)
This powerful antioxidant is one of the few, rare materials that can pass through the brain's blood/brain barrier to enter the brain and go directly where it is needed the most.
Most importantly, it has a specific effect on the nerves that eases the pain and numbness associated with neuropathy, and promotes better blood flow and oxygen to the nerves.
Recent studies have reported that just by using the R-ALA alone, orally, has symptoms of neuropathy were reduced.
Neuropathy support formulas
These days, it is common for those suffering from neuropathy to take both medical and vitamin therapies, combining short-term treatment with the cumulative effects of correct nutrition.
The best formulas (so make sure they have these in the ingredient list) include vitamins B1, B2 and B12, as well as Vitamin D, R-ALA and materials that relax your nervous system, avoiding over-stimulation.
I personally recommend checking those out for anyone who is really looking for a solution to their neuropathy problem, or is worried they are developing one. For diabetes patients, this would be a good way to perhaps prevent the onset of neuropathic symptoms.

Health Benefits of Cranberries

1) Prevents Urinary Tract Infections - Did you know that a simple glass of cranberry juice can prevent urinary tract infections from occurring? The Proanthocyanidins found inside the cranberry juice stops bacteria from attaching to cells of the bladder walls. Cranberry juice also helps flush toxins out of the body through urination. The bacteria never gets a chance to multiply on the bladder walls due to the high acidity levels of the juice. Make sure you buy the unsweetened brands at your local supermarket.

2) Boosts The Immune System - The powerful antioxidants and phytochemicals found within the berries protect cells from free radicals, and help strengthen your immune system. Cranberry juice also increases HDL (good cholesterol) in the body, while reducing the LDL (bad cholesterol).

3) Fights Cancer - The proanthocyanidin found in cranberries helps stop cancer cells from spreading throughout the body. Cranberry juice contains phenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, which are used to combat micro tumors that can invade blood cells, The anti-carcinogenic properties of the juice also help to prevent against breast cancer.

4) Improves Cardiovascular Health - A cup of cranberry juice can limit the chances of cardiovascular disease developing. The supercharged antioxidants also prevent against atherosclerosis, which is the hardening of the arteries due to the accumulation of fatty plaques and cholesterol. The flavonoids found in cranberry juice help promote healthy blood flow throughout the body.

5) Contains Anti-Tumor Properties - Polyphenolic compounds in cranberries have been found to contain anti-tumor properties. The salicylic acid of the dark red juice, reduces swelling and blood clots, which can eventually form into tumors. The strong polyphenol properties encourage T-cell production along the intestine and reproductive tracts.

6) Helps Reduce Inflammation - Cranberry juice is loaded with many anti-inflammatory properties, including vitamin C, which helps limit inflammation and thrombosis. These anti-inflammatory properties ensure that viruses never stick around your blood cells for long.

7) Prevents Tooth Decay - Brushing and flossing are two vital components for preventing tooth decay, but a few cranberries can also benefit your teeth. Cranberries inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, which causes plaque formation and leads to cavities. Cranberries can even freshen your breath! Avoid the sugary brands, and go for the organic variety instead.

8) Soothes Heartburn and Peptic Ulcers - The acidity of cranberry juice can help kill the helicobacter pylori bacteria that causes peptic ulcers and heartburn problems. People suffering from gastric disorders have turned to cranberry juice as a soothing relief for treating acid reflux issues.

9) Fights Off Yeast Infection - Yeast infections occur when there is an overgrowth of a type of yeast called Candida in the human body. The infections are common among pregnant women, or people suffering from diabetes. Cranberry juice kills the bacteria that plagues the urinary tract, and flushes out the yeast.
10) Helps You Lose Weight - Start your morning off with a delicious glass of natural cranberry juice. Cranberry juice plays a significant role in promoting good cholesterol levels in the body. Cranberries are full of essential nutrients and vitamins, both critical factors in maintaining a healthy diet. The high acidity prevents those annoying hunger pangs as well.

11) Prevents Kidney Stones from Forming - Cranberry juice reduces the amount of magnesium, citrate, oxalate and calcium found in urine. The polyphenolic properties help fight off kidney infections, urinary tract infections, and prevent bacteria from attaching to the membranes of the kidneys. Consult with your physician beforehand if you suffer from any renal diseases.

12) A Natural Acne Treatment - Cranberry juice contains an acne-fighting compound called resveratrol, and antiseptic properties that help ensure nice clean skin. As an added bonus, you can even make a mask out of cranberry juice, and here's how to do it: Directions:
  • Mix a little cranberry juice with orange peel powder, and a teaspoon of honey.
  • Mix well until a paste develops.
  • Apply the cranberry juice mask all over your face, and allow it to sit for 20 minutes before washing it off.
13) Prevents Scurvy - Sailors used to carry cranberries aboard their vessels to prevent scurvy at sea. Vitamin C deficiency is the leading cause of scurvy, but you won't have to worry about that problem with cranberries. The tiny red berries are extremely high in vitamin C, which is used to produce collagen to ensure healthy regulation of tissues in your immune system.

14) Fights Common Infections - Are you suffering from a terrible cold? A glass of nature's wonder berries can help with that! Cranberry juice helps soothe a sore throat and combats infections. Cranberry juice inhibits the bacterial structures of the Haemophilus influenza, which causes painful ear and respiratory infections in children as well.
15) Softens Up the Skin - Cranberry juice helps promote healthy collagen production thanks to the high levels of vitamin C. Collagen joins together with keratin to strengthen the skin. The function of collagen is to help blood vessels beneath the skin carry oxygen. In turn, the collagen then softens up the skin, giving it that bright radiant glow, and a youthful appearance.
16) Promotes Healthy Hair Growth - Vitamins A and C help promote the growth of strong healthy hair. The essential nutrients found in vitamin C help repair damaged hair follicles. Just make sure you rinse thoroughly after.
17) Contains Anti-Aging Properties - Cranberry juice can help slow down the aging process by destroying free radicals. Free radicals are responsible for causing the formation of wrinkles on the skin. The super powerful antioxidants found in cranberry juice promote healthy skin cells, and get rid of any unwanted blemishes and redness.

18) Can Be Used as a Natural Skin Toner - Cranberries are very acidic, so they are a useful treatment for oily skin. The cranberry juice mask mentioned earlier can help give your skin a lighter tone if used on a regular basis. It's important to use natural cranberry juice when preparing the mask.

19) Prevents Psoriasis and Alopecia - Nutritional deficiencies can lead to such scalp diseases as hair loss or psoriasis. The vitamin C found in the cranberry juice, is used to treat a variety of hair disorders, including alopecia or male pattern baldness. A cup of cranberry juice may be poured over the scalp to prevent dandruff and psoriasis from occurring.

Natural Ways to Prevent Gout

Gout is an arthritic health condition which affects the joints. It is caused by an excess amount of uric acid in the bloodstream, and attacks can be chronic.

Symptoms
  • Crystals develop on the joints, followed by intense and sudden pain.
  • Joints can swell, feel warm and tender, and can’t bear the pressure of touch.
  • You won’t be able to move the affected joint much.
  • Primarily felt in the feet, specifically the big toe, although it can flare up in the ankles, heels, knees, wrists, fingers or elbows.
  • Skin surrounding the joint can turn red or purple, and appears bruised.
  • After gout subsides you will have lingering discomfort around the joints and the skin around the joint will peel and feel itchy.
  • After extended periods of gout, nodules may develop beneath the skin near the joints.
  • Repeated bouts can also damage your joints and the kidney.
  • Fluid sacs cushioning tissues around the elbow or knee may become inflamed.
  • Symptoms often follow surgery or an illness.

Uric acid is caused by purine metabolisms, which are proteins found in sardines and anchovies, as well as alcohol. Some medication and supplements can also cause a buildup of uric acid. Examples include salicylates, the active component of aspirin, vitamin B3, too much vitamin C, and diuretics.  Alcohol consumption, excess weight, and lead exposure can increase the chances of gout developing in those with a genetic susceptibility.
Prescription medicine is often accompanied by strong side effects, and will require lifelong consumption. There are also several natural treatments which focus on relieving pain.
1. Apple cider vinegar
This common cooking ingredient can raise your body’s alkaline level, thereby reducing gout pain considerably. With its significant acidity, apple cider vinegar is commonly used to treat headaches and stomach acid. The best way to effectively ingest apple cider vinegar is by drinking it in a glass of water. Mix in one teaspoon to one glass of water, and drink this mixture three times a day. To sweeten this bitter drink add some honey, which can also boost your body’s anti-inflammatory response.
2. Activated charcoal
One wouldn’t naturally think of charcoal as a solution for any medical condition, but it seems activated charcoal is perfectly safe and it's known to absorb uric acid. The best way to use it to prevent gout flare-ups is by soaking in a bath of charcoal two to three times a week. You can add half a cup of charcoal powder to your bath water. When a paste is formed, add more water and soak your affected joint for at least half an hour.
If you don’t enjoy bathing, applying a charcoal paste directly to the skin of the affected joint. You can leave this on for half an hour and then remove with lukewarm water. The alternative solution is to consume activated charcoal tablets. This option does require consultation with your physician.
 3. Baking soda
Baking soda is another household item that can be effective in treating gout pain. Baking soda reduces uric acid in the body. In an 8 oz. glass of water mix in half a teaspoon of baking soda and drink it. You can repeat this several times a day. No more than 4 teaspoons should be consumed in one day, and if you are over 60 years old, only 3 teaspoons per day should be consumed in total.
Note: This method is not recommended for anyone suffering from hypertension, as baking soda is known to elevate blood pressure.
4. Cherries
Cherries are another one of nature’s treats that can help with gout. They are not only packed with antioxidants but also anthocyanins, which are known to reduce joint inflammation and can substantially reduce gout from flaring up in subsequent attacks. A daily serving of 15 to 20 cherries is recommended. If you want to avoid the high concentration of sugar in the fresh fruit, try drinking a glass of black cherry juice or a cherry juice concentrate daily.
 5. Apples
The commonly heard phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” can be especially true when it comes to gout. An apple after each meal, as endorsed by medical experts, can be very effective. The strong component of malic acid in apples can neutralize uric acid, thereby offering relief to both pain and inflammation. Some people don’t enjoy the texture of apples – for those people I recommend trying apple juice or dicing the apples up and adding them to a bowl of cherries.
6. Lemon juice
Another way to neutralize excess uric acid in the blood stream, which can provide relief from pain caused by bouts of gout, is with lemon juice. The freshly squeezed juice of a lemon can alkalize the body. Another useful way to consume it is adding a lemon half to a glass of water, as this will be less strong than pure lemon juice. You can also mix the juice of a lemon with half a teaspoon of baking soda. When the mixture stops fizzing, add it to a glass of water and drink it immediately.
