Natural Remedies to Get Rid of Ear Wax

It is easy to view ear wax as an annoyance, but like most secretions, it has an important purpose. It's a cleaning agent, produced by your ears to prevent them from drying out. It contains protective and anti-bacterial agents to help your ears stay healthy.

However, various factors can cause more wax than is needed to collect in the outer part of the ear canal and if it's left unattended, it can cause pain and eventually require medical intervention. But don't worry, help is at hand in the form of these effective remedies you can try at home!

What is Ear Wax?
'Wax' is something of a misnomer for the body fluid that forms in your ear. It is actually a water-soluble mixture of various secretions mixed with hair and dead skin, formed in the outer part of the ear rather than the inner drum. Your ears are self-cleaning for the most part, and the secretions help move dead skin to the opening of the ear, aided by the jaw motion you use when you chew. Once out in the open, 'wax' will usually dry out and flake away naturally. However over time it can build up and cause other problems, sometimes aided by overproduction or a blockage within the ear canal.

What You Shouldn't Do
Firstly, don't fall into the trap of thinking that digging every last bit of wax out of your ear constantly is an indicator of good personal hygiene. Remember that ear wax has its uses and removing it excessively can cause your ear canal to dry out. However, if it accumulates in excess, it can cause discomfort and even pain. It is in these circumstances that you need to take action.

The other big 'NO' is the use of homemade poking and scraping devices down your ear hole. Q-Tips, bobby pins, pencils and any other similar instruments are NOT suitable for cleaning your ears, no matter how many times you might have used them in the past. Although you may see remnants of wax on your Q-Tip after you have had a good rummage down your ear, you will more than likely have pushed other clumps further into your ear canal. Additionally, if you prod down too far then you could cause serious damage to the inner ear.

Signs You Need to Take Action
Since you don't need to constantly clean the wax out of your ears, what are the signs that you have an excessive buildup that you need to deal with? Different ears produce different amounts of wax. It may be that you know from past experience that you are likely to have excess wax.

There are a number of other signs that can indicate a problem too:
 • Earache
• Strangely muffled hearing
• Tinnitus or ringing noises in ear
• Itchy ears
• Odor and noticeable, moist discharge
• An uncomfortable sensation of 'fullness' in the ear

You can buy ear drops and wax removal kits or visit your doctor, but the answer to your problems can also be found in natural remedies you can make in your own home. Here are some that have proved useful to others:

N.B. - These remedies should not be used if you have an ear infection, hearing loss or severe earache.

1. Salt Water
Salt water is one of the best home remedies for excessive ear wax. It works by softening the wax inside the ear and flushing it out to the surface:
 • Take a teaspoon of salt and add it to half a cup of warm water. Wait until the salt dissolves entirely.
• Take a soft, cotton ball and dip it in the solution.
• Tilt your head so that your affected ear is facing skywards. Place the cotton ball over the opening and let the solution drip into your ear canal. • Keep your head tilted for three to four minutes.
• Tilt your head downwards to let any excess solution drain back out.
• Wipe the area around the opening of your ear with a clean cloth to remove softened wax.

2. Olive Oil
Olive oil can also soften ear wax. It also lists 'antiseptic properties' among its many benefits so it can help reduce your risk of an ear infection as well:
• Slightly warm some olive oil. Make sure it isn't too hot to touch of course as you should be able to easily bear it against your skin.

• Put two to three small drops of the oil into the ear, using a dropper or, ask someone to do it for you.

• Let the solution settle for ten minutes and then tilt your head to remove any excess.

• Repeat the process before bedtime for 3-4 days.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is used in many of the over-the-counter ear drops you can buy for wax removal. It is important that you don't use this one if you have sensitive skin. Always make sure that the peroxide you use is less than 3% in strength:

 • Mix together equal parts water and (3% or less) hydrogen peroxide.

• Tilt your head sideways and drop a few drops of the solution in to your ear (ask someone else to do this for you if you don't have a dropper).

• Make sure you place a towel over your shoulder to catch any loose drips.

• Allow the solution to stay in the ear for 10 to 15 minutes. Lie down on a pillow, keeping the treated ear pointed skywards if it helps.

• You should feel tickling or a bubbling sensation.

• When this sensation stops, remove the solution by tilting your head the other way, and dry your ear with a clean cloth.

4. Vinegar and Rubbing Alcohol Solution
This is a remedy from a bygone age and works by dissolving the ear wax. The antibacterial properties of the vinegar also help keep infection at bay.
• Mix equal parts white vinegar and rubbing alcohol in a small bowl.
• Immerse a cotton ball in the solution, then remove it.
• Tilt your head so that the ear you want to treat is facing upwards.
• Use the cotton ball to apply a small amount of the solution into the opening of the ear.
• After four to five minutes, tilt your head back the other way and use a cloth to catch the liquid as it is dispelled from the ear.
• Dab clean with a cloth or tissue.

5. Baby Oil or Glycerin (Mineral Oil)
If you have either of these products lying around your house, they are great for softening up your excessive ear wax as well:
• Use a dropper or the help of friends and family to put three drops of oil into your ear while it is facing upwards.
• Place a cotton ball over the ear opening to help the oil stay in your ear.
• After around ten minutes, remove the cotton ball and allow the oil to drain onto a cloth or tissue.
• Wipe away any excess soft wax.

What To Do If Your Problems Persist
If your ear continues to feel uncomfortable after the application of these natural remedies and/or over-the-counter solutions available from the pharmacy, you will need to book an appointment with your doctor or an Ear, Nose and Throat Consultant. You should always consult a medic if you have severe ear ache, large amounts of fluid flowing, severe hearing loss, dizziness, fever and vomiting. Your ears are important, please look after them!

Simple Home Remedy For Bed Sores

It is sad to see those who were active all their lives are suddenly bed-ridden due to various reasons. For these patients, if the recovery period is going to be long, sadly they face an additional irritating problem- bed sores. I know a lady here, who is paralytic below her hips for the last 8 months, is suffering from bed sores, especially near her tail bone, which is deep. She has been using the usual creams bought from the pharmacist. Another friend of mine, whose husband suffered from such deep bed sores, found this treatment. So, this morning, I informed the lady's husband mentioned before, of the simple home remedy.

It is made with just 2 ingredients
(Magnesium sulfate) Megasulf is the name of the powder - 400 gm packet
Glycerine   200 ml

Put both the ingredients in a big vessel, mix well, keep stirring on gas till it forms a thick paste. Cool and store it in a jar. Keep applying this paste twice  a day minimum on the sore till it heals.

Good luck to all out there, best wishes for good health, especially as the festive season is approaching and severe winter in many parts of the world. Take care, keep yourselves covered, keep sipping hot fluids. Best wishes for the festive season.

Treat your lips to balms with superfoods, coconut oil

Hydrated, healthy lips can elevate your appearance. Use lip balms with superfoods like blueberries, and exfoliate chapped lips with a product with right ingredients like coconut oil or jojoba oil and brown sugar, suggest experts.

Few inputs from a beauty expert-
* Use balms infused with superfoods:
Blueberries: These contain anti-oxidants that protect from premature ageing.

Grapefruits and mandarins: These are rich in vitamin A and C, minerals and antioxidants and the potassium present in the grapefruit provides a protective shield against UV rays.

Cranberries: This fruit contains a high percentage of vitamin B3, vitamin B5 and antioxidants making it useful in shielding you from any harm caused due to environmental factors.

* Brush your lips. Apply a thin layer of a multipurpose organic balm, then use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the dead skin off. Make sure you’re using a new toothbrush for this purpose so you don’t scrub toothpaste into your lip’s delicate skin or dead skin cells onto your teeth.

* Using coconut oil and sugar is a really simple, inexpensive and easy do-it-yourself to exfoliate your lips. Mix together a little organic coconut oil with some granulated sugar then scrub your lips with it. Just rinse it off when you’re done and apply a bit of lip balm.

* Rose water and glycerine are both said to have various benefits. While rosewater will leave a light pink tint on your lips, the glycerine will take away the dry and dead skin. Combine both these products and apply it to your lips and get rid of all the dead skin and dryness.

* Use jojoba oil as it will provide the much-wanted nourishment and moisturising effect. Mix it with brown sugar as it is good for exfoliation. Scrub your lips with this mix and witness the smooth lips that are free from all the dirt and dryness. Massage it in for not more than 3-4 minutes.

* Green tea oil is full of goodness and antioxidants that can help calm, reduce redness, reveal radiance that looks healthy and has a glow all year around. It makes for the perfect scrub for this time of the year to help prolong the summer glow.

When applied topically, it is an effective treatment for preventing bleeding lips.

HOME REMDIES FOR CRACKED HEELS

Cracked heels, or heel fissures, are a common condition in which the skin begins to break along the outer edge of the heel. The skin there becomes very dry, hard and flaky, which causes the fissures to occur. Some of these fissures may even lead to painful bleeding.

What Causes Cracked Heels?
Cracked heels can happen to anyone for a variety of reasons, but here are some of the most commonly found responsible factors:

  • Walking barefoot for extended periods of time
  • Regular use of sandals
  • Living in dry climates
  • Wearing open backed shoes
  • Thick, hard and inflexible skin around the heels
  • Walking or standing on your heels for a long time
  • Pregnancy
  • Lack of proper support from footwear around the heel
  • Prolonged standing on hard floors
  • Inactive sweat glands
  • Poor foot hygiene
  • Being obese or overweight
  • Athlete's Foot, eczema or other skin conditions
  • Deficiency in minerals, vitamins, or zinc
  • Thyroid problems or Diabetes
  •  Flat feet or high arched heels

How Can You Treat Cracked Heels?
One of the most important habits to adopt if you have cracked heels, or have had it in the past, is to keep your feet moisturized at all time. Use a soft foot file on your cracked heels to reduce the development of fissures and to remove dry and dead skin cells. Remember, getting rid of cracked heels can be a bit of a process, and the condition will not disappear overnight if it is quite bad, but regular use of pumice stone, while having bath, will surely help.

1. Use Oils
First clean your feet with soap and water and pat them dry. If you already have cracks in your heels, rub your feet down for a few minutes with a pumice stone to get rid of the dry skin. Then, clean the area with a tissue and apply the oils to any cracks or sores on your heels. Rub the oils in liberally and leave on your feet overnight. For effective results, apply oil each night for a week and you will experience a dramatic improvement in your cracked heels.
2. Ripe Bananas
Bananas can be an excellent moisturizer if they are used correctly. Mash up the banana and apply the mixture to your dry and cracked heels. Leave it on your feet for 15 minutes, then wash the mixture off with warm water. Later, use cold water to wash off the remainder and to refresh your feet.
3. Paraffin Wax
If you experience pain from cracked heels, paraffin wax can give you almost instant relief. Mix the paraffin with coconut or mustard oil and then heat it up until the wax melts. Use the resulting liquid and apply it to your feet to be left overnight and wash it off in the morning. You'll be amazed at the results!
4. Lemon Juice
Applying lemon juice to cracked heels will soften the skin as lemon has acidic properties. Stick your feet in a bucket of lukewarm water and lemon juice for 10 to 15 minutes to hydrate your feet. Once you finish, clean your feet with a pumice stone and pat your feet dry.
5. Rice Flour With Honey and Vinegar
This is a great natural scrub for removing dead skin cells. To make the scrub, take 2 tablespoons of rice flour and mix it with 2-3 tablespoons of honey and vinegar. This should make a thick paste. Then, soak your feet in warm water for 10 minutes, apply the scrub on your heels and wash it off with warm water once it's dry.
6. Honey
Using just honey alone can also aid your cracked heels because it has antibacterial and moisturizing properties. When you soak your feet, mix 2-3 tablespoons of honey into the warm water and soak your feet for 15 minutes. This will leave your feet feeling moist and supple.
7. Salt Water
Believe it or not, this is an excellent remedy for dry and cracking heels, and it may be why most of the beach bums you know have soft, baby-like feet. Place your feet into a bucket of salty warm water and leave them there for 15 minutes. Now remove your feet and place them in a bucket of cold water for 10 minutes. This will improve the blood circulation to your feet.

8. Indian Lilac or Neem Leaves
If you are able to purchase this herb fresh or have a paste available to you at your natural foods store, this solution is most effective in the ridding of cracked heels for an extended period of time. Apply a mixture of neem leaf powder and turmeric powder to the cracked area of your heels. Leave the mixture there for 30-45 minutes and wash away the paste when you are done. Pat your feet dry. You should see results in only a few days
9. Petroleum Jelly
If you regularly scrub your cracked heels with a pumice stone, and then apply petroleum jelly, this will help you get rid of the dryness. After you have scrubbed your feet with a pumice stone, apply petroleum jelly to them before you go to bed. You will wake with softer and mostly crack-free heels.
10. Rosewater and Glycerin
Mix together equal amounts of rosewater and glycerin and rub the mixture over your cracked heels. If any of the fissures are open or bleeding, this could sting as a result of the glycerin (it contains alcohol). This should keep your skin soft for hours, and the mixture can be easily applied before you put on sandals or walk around barefoot outside.
11. Drinking Water
It is important to keep your body hydrated, as this will prevent your feet from going dry. You should drink 12-15 glasses of water a day to give your heels the necessary elasticity so they won't crack in the future.
12. Watch Your Calcium Intake
To improve the state of your cracked heels, you need to watch your calcium intake. Add foods like yogurt, milk and cheese, broccoli or fish to your diet.

13. Vitamin E and Iron
By adding Vitamin E to your diet, you will significantly aid in the healing of cracked heels. Foods like vegetable oils, green vegetables, nuts and whole grains are great sources of vitamin E that you should try to incorporate into your diet. Iron is also important for curing cracked heels, so make sure that you are eating enough meat, chicken, and fish.
14. Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Foods like flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, and cold water fish are known to be rich sources of Omega 3, which helps reduce the effect of cracked heels
If you suffer from cracked heels, try some of these natural and home-made remedies, and you are sure to have soft, supple feet.
