Treat your lips to balms with superfoods, coconut oil

Hydrated, healthy lips can elevate your appearance. Use lip balms with superfoods like blueberries, and exfoliate chapped lips with a product with right ingredients like coconut oil or jojoba oil and brown sugar, suggest experts.

Few inputs from a beauty expert-
* Use balms infused with superfoods:
Blueberries: These contain anti-oxidants that protect from premature ageing.

Grapefruits and mandarins: These are rich in vitamin A and C, minerals and antioxidants and the potassium present in the grapefruit provides a protective shield against UV rays.

Cranberries: This fruit contains a high percentage of vitamin B3, vitamin B5 and antioxidants making it useful in shielding you from any harm caused due to environmental factors.

* Brush your lips. Apply a thin layer of a multipurpose organic balm, then use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the dead skin off. Make sure you’re using a new toothbrush for this purpose so you don’t scrub toothpaste into your lip’s delicate skin or dead skin cells onto your teeth.

* Using coconut oil and sugar is a really simple, inexpensive and easy do-it-yourself to exfoliate your lips. Mix together a little organic coconut oil with some granulated sugar then scrub your lips with it. Just rinse it off when you’re done and apply a bit of lip balm.

* Rose water and glycerine are both said to have various benefits. While rosewater will leave a light pink tint on your lips, the glycerine will take away the dry and dead skin. Combine both these products and apply it to your lips and get rid of all the dead skin and dryness.

* Use jojoba oil as it will provide the much-wanted nourishment and moisturising effect. Mix it with brown sugar as it is good for exfoliation. Scrub your lips with this mix and witness the smooth lips that are free from all the dirt and dryness. Massage it in for not more than 3-4 minutes.

* Green tea oil is full of goodness and antioxidants that can help calm, reduce redness, reveal radiance that looks healthy and has a glow all year around. It makes for the perfect scrub for this time of the year to help prolong the summer glow.

When applied topically, it is an effective treatment for preventing bleeding lips.

Tips for taking care of skin during winters

Winter time can be hard on the skin, making it dry, flaky and itchy, but with proper care you can effectively banish your skin woes. Dermatologist Rita Pichardo-Geisinger, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, provides tips that are easy to incorporate into your daily routine to help keep your skin and hair in prime condition.

First of all use a fragrance free soap because perfumes and additives can dry the skin which can lead to flaking and itching or exacerbate conditions like eczema. It is also important to use a moisturizing lotion after the shower because when you apply a moisturizer to damp skin right after showering, this helps seal in water to prevent skin from drying out. "A moisturizer helps to act as a barrier of protection for your skin so look for one that has ceramides, a new technology that helps restore and protect the skin barrier," she said.

Next, keep the temperature at home on the cool side, not too warm, to avoid skin dehydration because if your home or workplace temperature is warm enough to make it feel like a sauna, you might be drying your skin out. Do not forget to use a fragrance free detergent and liquid fragrance free conditioner for the clothes because some people with skin sensitivities can experience skin irritation or rash after wearing clothes washed in a detergent with fragrance additives.

Also, do not forget your moisturizing lotion with sunscreen for your face, even if it is winter time. If lips get chapped, avoid cracking by using a lip balm with sunscreen to get the double benefit of smooth and protected lips, Rita asserted. And, your hair can get dry in the wintertime too, so you might need to use a hydrating shampoo or an anti-frizz leave-in conditioner.

Lastly, tend to your toes and feet and treat them with good lactic acid creams that can help keep feet soft and supple.

Coconut oil not just for hair, also for beauty !

Coconut oil is more than just moisturising. Packed with vitamins D, E and K, the miracle-worker transforms skin and hair in minutes. Use it as an oil or a balm, the product turns liquid above 75° F and remains a silky solid at lower temperatures.
EYE MAKE-UP REMOVER: Dab a small amount on a cotton pad and use it to remove mascara and other eye make-up.
FRIZZ FIGHTER: Emulsify a tiny bit between your hands and use it as an anti-frizz hair serum.
FACE MOISTURIZER: Smooth onto face as moisture-rich cream that harnesses vitamin E to heal skin naturally.
BODY SCRUB: Mix with equal parts sugar and keep in the shower for a moisturising, ex-foliating body scrub.
ELBOW SOFTENER: Slather rough elbows with a layer of the stuff. After five minutes, use body brush to ex-foliate the softened skin.
CURL TAMER: Run a touch through natural ringlets to encourage the perfect amount of curl.
BODY MOISTURISER: Smooth on to protect skin’s moisture barrier all day long.
DEEP CONDITIONER: A thick coat of coconut oil, left on for several hours under a shower cap, will transform dry, damaged hair.

LIP BALM: Keep some in a small tin as a natural lip protector.
SHAVE AID: Works great as a natural—and moisturising—shaving lubricant.
SKIN SOOTHER: Spread on skin to alleviate psoriasis or eczema.
CUTICLE CREAM: Rub into cuticles to prevent hangnails.
TOOTH WHITENER: Concoct a natural toothpaste by mixing with baking soda.
SCALP CONDITIONER: Rub into scalp to calm itching and help stimulate hair growth.
MASSAGE OIL: Once it’s warmed up, coconut oil makes for a lovely tropical-smelling massage oil.

Actinic Cheilitis (Farmer's Lip)

This image displays scaly, dry, cracked lips due to actinic cheilitis.
This picture shows dry, scaly & cracked lips.
Actinic cheilitis is significantly more common in men, the elderly, and fair-skinned individuals. There is also a strong association with tobacco use.

Actinic cheilitis, sometimes known as "farmer's lip" or "sailor's lip," is a precancerous condition related to cumulative lifetime sun exposure. The lower lip is most often affected. Individuals with actinic cheilitis often complain of persistent dryness and cracking of the lips. They will frequently exhibit other effects of sun-damaged skin, such as precancerous lesions on the skin called actinic keratoses and extensive wrinkling.

A certain type of skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) develops in 6–10% of cases of actinic cheilitis.

Signs and Symptoms
Actinic cheilitis is located on the lips, most often the lower lip. Persistent redness, scaliness, and chapping are among the symptoms noted. Erosions and cracks (fissures) may be present as well.

Preventive Tips
Wearing  wide-brimmed hats and sunscreen-containing lip balms can aid in preventing actinic cheilitis.
When to Get Medical Help
See a dermatologist when persistent scaling of the lips is noted. A biopsy of the lip may be needed to rule out squamous cell carcinoma.

Treatments
In severe cases without evidence of malignancy, a lip shave procedure (vermilionectomy) may be performed. In less extreme cases, your doctor may recommend ablation of the damaged cells with a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser.

Alternative treatments include the use of electric current to destroy the precancerous cells (electrodesiccation) and a facial sanding technique (dermabrasion). Topical therapy with a chemotherapeutic agent (fluorouracil) or a topical immunomodulator (imiquimod) may be prescribed.
