This 4-in-1 pill can prevent heart problems

A cheap daily pill that combines four drugs cut the risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart failure in a large study, suggesting it could be a good way to help prevent heart problems especially in poor countries.

The pills contained two blood pressure drugs, a cholesterol medicine and aspirin. Many people can’t afford or don’t stick with taking so many medicines separately, so doctors think a polypill might help. A previous study testing one in India found it lowered cholesterol and blood pressure. The new study is much larger and gives stronger evidence because it tracked heart attacks, strokes and other problems — not just risk factors.

It involved about 6,800 people in Iran, ages 50-75, some with previous heart problems and others without them. All got advice on healthy lifestyles and half also were given polypills. After five years, 6% of those in the pill group had suffered a heart attack, stroke or heart failure versus 9% of the others. That worked out to a 34% lower risk with the polypill, and a 22% lower risk after researchers took into account other heart drugs that participants were taking.

People who took the polypill most faithfully, at least 70% of the time, had even bigger reductions in heart risks.

The benefit mostly seemed to come from lowering cholesterol; blood pressure didn’t significantly change. Side effects were similar in both groups. Some who developed a cough while on the polypill were switched to another version that substituted one of the four drugs. All of the drugs are cheap generic medicines now.

“This is an important step in the right direction,” said a Dr., who leads another polypill study expected to finish next summer. “This could be used in every sensible country where we want to save lives.”

One study leader, said the results show the polypill is a “viable strategy” to prevent heart disease in developing countries.

“It’s much simpler to give people one medication that manages a couple of risk factors at the same time,” he said.

Marshall said, however, that the benefits would be minimal for people who already have access to good health care.

“But if you’re in a system where people don’t have great access, then this is a significant advantage,” he said.

A cardiologist who had no role in the study, said he expected that polypills would start to be used more widely in the next few years if they’re shown to work in other groups besides the people of central Asian ancestry tested in the Lancet study.

“The biology is different in different populations, so before we apply it to all of India or all of North Africa, we need to know these polypills are actually safe in these populations,” he said.

New microfluidics device can detect cancer cells in blood

Researchers have now developed a device that can isolate individual cancer cells from patient blood samples.

The microfluidics device works by separating the various cell types found in blood by their size. The device may one day enable rapid, cheap liquid biopsies to help detect cancer and develop targeted treatment plans.

Speaking about it, corresponding author of the study, said, “This new microfluidics chip lets us separate cancer cells from whole blood or minimally-diluted blood,” adding, “While devices for detecting cancer cells circulating in the blood are becoming available, most are relatively expensive and are out of reach of many research labs or hospitals. Our device is cheap, and doesn’t require much specimen preparation or dilution, making it fast and easy to use.”


The ability to successfully isolate cancer cells is a crucial step in enabling liquid biopsy where cancer could be detected through a simple blood draw. This would eliminate the discomfort and cost of tissue biopsies which use needles or surgical procedures as part of cancer diagnosis.

According to researchers, liquid biopsy could also be useful in tracking the efficacy of chemotherapy over the course of time, and for detecting cancer in organs difficult to access through traditional biopsy techniques, including the brain and lungs.

However, isolating circulating tumour cells from the blood is no easy task, since they are present in extremely small quantities.

For many cancers, circulating cells are present at levels close to one per 1 billion blood cells. “A 7.5-milliliter tube of blood, which is a typical volume for a blood draw, might have ten cancer cells and 35-40 billion blood cells,” said the researcher. “So we are really looking for a needle in a haystack.”

Microfluidic technologies present an alternative to traditional methods of cell detection in fluids. 

These devices either use markers to capture targeted cells as they float by, or they take advantage of the physical properties of targeted cells — mainly size — to separate them from other cells present in fluids.

Researchers developed a device that uses size to separate tumour cells from blood. “Using size differences to separate cell types within a fluid is much easier than affinity separation which uses ‘sticky’ tags that capture the right cell type as it goes by,” he said.

“Affinity separation also requires a lot of advanced purification work which size separation techniques don’t need,” he added.


The device the researchers developed capitalises on the phenomena of inertial migration and shear-induced diffusion to separate cancer cells from blood as it passes through ‘microchannels’ formed in plastic. ”

Researchers ‘spiked’ 5-milliliter samples of healthy blood with 10 small-cell-lung cancer cells and then ran the blood through their device. They were able to recover 93 per cent of the cancer cells using the microfluidic device. Previously-developed microfluidics devices designed to separate circulating tumor cells from blood had recovery rates between 50 per cent and 80 per cent.

When they ran eight samples of blood taken from patients diagnosed with non-small-cell lung cancer, they were able to separate cancer cells from six of the samples using the microfluidic device.

Novel technique could provide early lung cancer diagnosis

Researchers have developed a new technique that has the potential to identify specific lung cancer markers at the earliest possible stage in a convenient and reusable way.

The new technique could create a highly sensitive graphene biosensor with the capability to detect molecules of the most-common lung cancer bio-markers.

In addition, the new biosensor design could revolutionise the existing electronic nose (e-nose) devices that identify specific components of a specific vapour mixture — a person’s breath — and analyses its chemical make-up to identify the cause.

“The new biosensors which we have developed show that graphene has significant potential for use as an electrode in e-nose devices.

“For the first time, we have shown that with suitable patterning graphene can be used as a specific, selective and sensitive detector for bio-markers,” said a researcher.

With further development of the devices, a cheap, reusable and accurate breath test for early-stage detection of lung cancer can become a reality, the researchers added in a paper published recently.

Lung cancer is one of the most common and aggressive cancers, killing around 1.4 million people worldwide each year.

Israeli Scientists Claim To Have Found A ‘Complete Cure’ For Cancer & It’ll Be Available By 2020

The revolutionary cure, dubbed MuTaTo, is being developed by researchers and will apparently be available for cancer patients early next year.

One of the researcher said, "Our cancer cure will be effective from day one, will last a duration of a few weeks and will have no or minimal side-effects at a much lower cost than most other treatments on the market. Our solution will be both generic and personal.

The scientists also claim that it will be cheap and effective and will have minimal side-effects.

MuTaTo reportedly uses a combination of cancer-targeting peptides and a unique toxin that only targets and terminates cancer cells. It leaves alone healthy cells and tissues in the process.

The Israeli scientists claim that that the cure can be hyper-personalised to each patient.

They have successfully conducted trials on mice and are now fast-tracking to conduct human trials through 2019.

If the trials complete successfully, it will save millions of lives in the coming years.

Simple home test could predict cancer and malaria

  • Scientists are developing new paper strips that detect cancer and malaria
  • Strips, which cost about 50 cents, require just a drop of blood
  • Once applied, the test can be sent to a lab where results are read
  • Means people would only need to see a doctor if the results were positive
  • Tests can detect any disease for which the body produces antibodies
  • Clinical trials should start within 3 years, scientists in Ohio hope 

Within a few years testing cancer could be as simple as testing for diabetes.
 
The scientist feels that the test could be tailored to detect any disease, for which the human body produces antibodies, including ovarian cancer and cancer of the large intestine.This patent pending technology would help those people most,who don't have a regular access to the doctor and can't afford regular visits.

The technology uses wax to ink to trace the outline of channels and reservoirs on the paper. To get tested, all that a person has to do is put a drop of blood on the strip, fold it in half and mail it to the lab for testing.

The finding are published in the Journal of American Chemical Society.

Now simple, cheap nuclear medicine technique to diagnose breast cancer


Scintimammography is a nuclear medicine imaging technique that offers new hope
The Director and Chief of Nuclear Medicine, Utkal Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneshwar, Birendra K Das has said scintimammography - a nuclear medicine imaging instrument - is a powerful method in the diagnosis of the breast cancer. In this procedure, manipulation of breasts such as compression required to be done during conventional mammography is not needed.
In an interview to Newsline, Das said scintimammography was a new imaging method, in which a radiopharmaceutical (Tc-99mm-sestamibi) is administrated intravenously and images of the breast are taken using a gamma camera giving immediate results.
“Several multi centric studies with blinded image interpretation have established the sensitivity and specificity of Scintimammography to be above 85 and 90 percent respectively as compared to 89 and 14 percent for X-ray mammograms,” he said.
