This silent heart attack symptom is very common but sometimes turns deadly: Max Hospital cardiologist warns not to ignore

Chest discomfort, bloating, or frequent burping are often dismissed as minor digestive issues, but experts warn they can sometimes point to a more serious underlying condition. According to Dr. Naveen Bhamri, a senior cardiologist at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Delhi with over two decades of experience, what many perceive as “gas” could occasionally be an early indicator of a silent heart attack — a condition that often goes unnoticed until it becomes life-threatening.

Dr. Bhamri explained that people in India frequently associate upper abdominal discomfort or heaviness with indigestion. However, he cautioned that these seemingly harmless symptoms can sometimes mimic heart attack warning signs. Many individuals, he noted, experience these symptoms without the classic chest pain typically linked to cardiac events, leading them to misinterpret the seriousness of the situation.

He pointed out that sensations such as heaviness in the chest, bloating, or excessive burping, particularly when they occur repeatedly, should not be taken lightly. These may indicate a “silent” heart attack — one that develops without the intense pain people usually expect. Elderly individuals and those with long-term hypertension are especially vulnerable, he said.

The Overlap Between Heartburn and Heart Attack

According to the Mayo Clinic, distinguishing between heartburn and a heart attack can be challenging, even for medical professionals. Both can produce similar sensations — chest tightness, burning, or discomfort. Typically, heartburn is caused by digestive acid moving up into the esophagus, often resulting in a burning feeling in the chest after meals or while lying down. Antacids usually bring relief in such cases.

However, the Mayo Clinic warns that when chest pain is persistent or unexplained, it’s safer to treat it as a potential cardiac emergency. A developing heart attack can sometimes present as mild or intermittent discomfort rather than severe pain. Even if the symptoms subside within a few hours, medical evaluation remains crucial.

Subtle Signs That Should Never Be Ignored

Unlike the stereotypical “crushing” chest pain, many heart attacks, particularly in women, may appear with subtle symptoms. These include nausea, indigestion, abdominal pain, fatigue, or mild pressure in the chest. The pain might radiate to the arms, neck, jaw, or back. Shortness of breath, cold sweats, or dizziness are other potential signs.

Dr. Bhamri emphasized that individuals with conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease should remain particularly alert. Routine heart check-ups and timely consultation can prevent serious outcomes.

While gas or heartburn is generally harmless, overlooking recurring or unusual digestive discomfort can have dire consequences. Experts agree that any persistent chest or upper abdominal symptoms, especially in high-risk individuals, should be promptly assessed by a medical professional. When in doubt, it’s always safer to rule out a heart attack than to ignore early warnings.

7 Subtle Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency to Be Aware Of

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that is crucial for our health. The vitamin has powerful effects on several systems throughout our body. It boosts immunity, prompts cell growth, keeps the bones robust and the skin healthy, and even helps create new hair follicles. We primarily absorb vitamin D through sun exposure but it can also be taken through dietary supplements and by eating certain foods, like fatty fish. That being said, getting enough of this vitamin is difficult from food products alone. Fortunately, a variety of vitamin D supplements can help you in that regard.

Today, vitamin D deficiency has become very common across all age groups. It's estimated that about 1 billion people worldwide have low levels of the vitamin in their blood.

Some of the common risk factors for vitamin D deficiency are:

* Staying mostly indoors.

* Not eating enough fish or dairy.

 * Being overweight or obese.

* Living in a region where there is little sun year-round. * Being elderly.

* Using sunscreen regularly when going out.

Getting sufficient vitamin D isn’t always easy during the fall and winter months and since these seasons are right around the corner, it would be prudent to ensure you have enough of it. The curious thing is that most people don’t even realize that they are lacking vitamin D in their bodies since the symptoms are generally quite subtle. Be warned, though, that insufficient vitamin D can have a substantial negative effect on your quality of life.

Hence, today we will look at some of the most important signs and symptoms of vitamin D deficiency that you should be aware of.

1. Fatigue and tiredness
 Vitamin D Deficiency, Fatigue
Feeling regularly tired in your hectic life can be a result of numerous factors and a vitamin D deficiency may be one of them. Various case studies have revealed that very low blood levels can cause fatigue and severely impede the quality of one’s life. Another observational study in female nurses demonstrated a clear connection between low vitamin D levels and self-reported fatigue.

In a few reported cases, people who complained of chronic daytime fatigue and headaches were found to have a vitamin D blood level of only 5.9 ng/ml. Anything under 20 ng/ml is usually considered deficient.
Taking vitamin D supplements usually helps improve energy levels. Hence, if you find yourself being regularly tired and fatigued, it would be a good idea to see a doctor and get your vitamin D levels checked.

2. Getting sick or infected regularly
Do you find yourself being constantly sick or infected with some viral illness? This may well be due to a vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in keeping our immune system strong to enable it to fight off viruses and bacteria that cause illness. It also collaborates with the cells that are responsible for fighting infection. Thus, low vitamin D levels may be a contributing factor in you often getting sick.

Some observational studies have shown a connection between deficiency and respiratory tract infections like colds, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Another study published in the journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research states that vitamin D has a direct connection to how your immune system reacts to different infections and viruses.

3.Back Pain
  Vitamin D Deficiency, Back pain
Many of us experience bouts of back pain from time to time and that’s quite common. However, if back pain, particularly lower back pain, has become a regular feature of your life then it may be a warning sign of low vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D helps in maintaining bone health by improving our body's absorption of calcium. Several studies over the years have found a link between a deficiency and chronic lower back pain. A 2008 study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society revealed that lower concentrations of vitamin D were connected to significant back pain in women.

Researchers have now observed that people with vitamin D deficiency are more likely to have back pain, including severe back pain, along with bone pain in their legs, ribs, or joints.

4. Muscle pain or weakness
 Vitamin D Deficiency, Muscle pain
According to the Cleveland Clinic, you are not getting adequate vitamin D if your muscles regularly feel weaker or are cramping more than usual. Studies have found a link between chronic pain and low blood levels of vitamin D. This may be because of the interaction between the vitamin and pain-sensing nerve cells.
Furthermore, muscle pain or weakness for kids who are vitamin D deficient is a real matter of concern as low levels can lead to rickets - the softening and weakening of bones – which can be pretty painful and dangerous, especially for children.

5.  Hair loss
It is not uncommon for us to lose hair as we age. However, research shows that a lack of vitamin D in your body can lead to hair loss. Vitamin D plays a role in stimulating new and old hair follicles and when you don’t have enough of it, new hair growth can be hindered.
Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to alopecia, the skin condition that causes hair to fall out in small patches. Another study published in the journal Skin Pharmacology and Physiology revealed that women with hair loss had lower levels of vitamin D.

6. Slow healing wounds
  Vitamin D Deficiency, wounds
Slow-healing or impaired wounds may be a sign that your vitamin D levels are too low. Research has shown that the important vitamin increases the production of compounds that are vital in the formation of new skin for the wound-healing process. Furthermore, a 2011 study published in the Journal of Dental Research proved that vitamin D levels are important to post-surgical healing. It has also been noted that vitamin D plays a part in controlling inflammation and fighting infection for proper healing.

7. Bone loss and discomfort

Vitamin D plays a major role in calcium absorption and bone metabolism. Hence, low bone density might be a sign of vitamin D deficiency, and getting sufficient vitamin D is essential for preserving bone mass as you get older.

Additionally, a study published in the journal American Family Physician states that any aches and painful tenderness in your bones could be directly related to a lack of vitamin D in the body. Take special note if you feel pain or uneasiness when you put pressure over your breastbone or shinbone areas, experts warn.

10 Sure Ways to Improve Your Mental Health

According to figures from the American Society for Suicide Prevention, each year, about 45,000 Americans commit suicide. In fact, it's considered to be the 10th most common cause of death in the United States. While there are no official reasons behind suicide attempts, medical experts concur that undue stress, severe anxiety and chronic, debilitating depression are leading factors. And while it may come as a surprise, among the most afflicted demographics, are middle-aged, high earning, successful individuals.

Possible reasons may include long hours and excessive stress, which makes such individuals more vulnerable to anxiety, sleep disorders, weight change, substance abuse and depression. High earning individuals generally have more responsibility and more to lose. They may also believe that they are immune and may be too busy or frightened to seek help. Nevertheless, anyone who is feeling the weight of the world, or may be experiencing suicidal ideation to any degree, it is possible to correct course. Here are some factors that may help you or anyone you may know dealing with mental health issues:

1. Use the buddy system
Select a trusted person, be it a colleague or a good friend, and instruct them to pull you aside whenever they notice you raising your voice. This person can help make you aware of certain behaviors that you are trying to minimize. Let them know that you demand honesty, no matter how harsh the truth may be to hear.

2. Know how to say “no”
Anyone who may feel like they have too much on their plate needs to be able to say no to more tasks without feeling regret. Planning and delegating can help. You should also schedule regular appointments into your week, like a tennis lesson, so that you are not always reacting to the needs of others.

3. Develop a healthy arrogance
A great employee believes unequivocally that they can ace a job. One of the best ways to nurture this belief is by reviewing past success and identifying times when you faced similar obstacles and overcame them.

4. Prioritize you
Getting enough sleep and exercising should be a top priority. It all comes down to discipline and planning. Be sure to stop working at a reasonable hour and schedule exercise as if it were a meeting with a client.

5. Delegate ruthlessly
Any good manager will relinquish tasks that others can do so that they can focus on the things they only can do.

6. Generate a solution that you can implement immediately
mental health
Recognize your workload. Notice if you are trying to do two-and-a-half days of work in three hours. The immediate solution: Delay doing one item on your list and deal with it at another time.

7. Be comfortable with discomfort
Try renaming anxiety, calling it opportunity instead. Most of us think of as anxiety as something to avoid, but it's actually fuel for positive change. Anxiety is a natural emotion that exists in the gap between where we are and where we want to be. A good leader sees anxiety as a productive energy for themselves and their organizations.

8. Create a three-legged life
mental health

Create a buffer against stress by securing balance in the three areas of your life: your home, your work, and your self. This works as when one goes down, you have two others to hold you up.

 9. Pick the low-hanging fruit
Faced with seemingly impossible challenges? Immediately pinpoint at least one piece of the problem that you can control, then attack it. Shift into the take-charge mode, meeting the challenge from a position of strength, as opposed to feeling its mercy. This will buck up your confidence and set you on a path of action.

10. Relive the past to face the future
While things may look bleak, chances are you've faced bleak offs before. Be mindful of your feelings and remember how you triumphed over past setbacks, giving you the confidence to face whatever may be lurking around the corner.
