10 Sure Ways to Improve Your Mental Health

According to figures from the American Society for Suicide Prevention, each year, about 45,000 Americans commit suicide. In fact, it's considered to be the 10th most common cause of death in the United States. While there are no official reasons behind suicide attempts, medical experts concur that undue stress, severe anxiety and chronic, debilitating depression are leading factors. And while it may come as a surprise, among the most afflicted demographics, are middle-aged, high earning, successful individuals.

Possible reasons may include long hours and excessive stress, which makes such individuals more vulnerable to anxiety, sleep disorders, weight change, substance abuse and depression. High earning individuals generally have more responsibility and more to lose. They may also believe that they are immune and may be too busy or frightened to seek help. Nevertheless, anyone who is feeling the weight of the world, or may be experiencing suicidal ideation to any degree, it is possible to correct course. Here are some factors that may help you or anyone you may know dealing with mental health issues:

1. Use the buddy system
Select a trusted person, be it a colleague or a good friend, and instruct them to pull you aside whenever they notice you raising your voice. This person can help make you aware of certain behaviors that you are trying to minimize. Let them know that you demand honesty, no matter how harsh the truth may be to hear.

2. Know how to say “no”
Anyone who may feel like they have too much on their plate needs to be able to say no to more tasks without feeling regret. Planning and delegating can help. You should also schedule regular appointments into your week, like a tennis lesson, so that you are not always reacting to the needs of others.

3. Develop a healthy arrogance
A great employee believes unequivocally that they can ace a job. One of the best ways to nurture this belief is by reviewing past success and identifying times when you faced similar obstacles and overcame them.

4. Prioritize you
Getting enough sleep and exercising should be a top priority. It all comes down to discipline and planning. Be sure to stop working at a reasonable hour and schedule exercise as if it were a meeting with a client.

5. Delegate ruthlessly
Any good manager will relinquish tasks that others can do so that they can focus on the things they only can do.

6. Generate a solution that you can implement immediately
mental health
Recognize your workload. Notice if you are trying to do two-and-a-half days of work in three hours. The immediate solution: Delay doing one item on your list and deal with it at another time.

7. Be comfortable with discomfort
Try renaming anxiety, calling it opportunity instead. Most of us think of as anxiety as something to avoid, but it's actually fuel for positive change. Anxiety is a natural emotion that exists in the gap between where we are and where we want to be. A good leader sees anxiety as a productive energy for themselves and their organizations.

8. Create a three-legged life
mental health

Create a buffer against stress by securing balance in the three areas of your life: your home, your work, and your self. This works as when one goes down, you have two others to hold you up.

 9. Pick the low-hanging fruit
Faced with seemingly impossible challenges? Immediately pinpoint at least one piece of the problem that you can control, then attack it. Shift into the take-charge mode, meeting the challenge from a position of strength, as opposed to feeling its mercy. This will buck up your confidence and set you on a path of action.

10. Relive the past to face the future
While things may look bleak, chances are you've faced bleak offs before. Be mindful of your feelings and remember how you triumphed over past setbacks, giving you the confidence to face whatever may be lurking around the corner.

A Guide To Avoiding and Dealing With Emotional Blackmail

Emotional blackmail is not a pleasant thing to encounter, and many of us succumb to it without even realizing it at various stages in our lives. The truth is that there are many manipulative people out there, who seem to thrive on getting a one-up over someone they deem to be vulnerable and/or they feel they can take something from.
As a result, emotional blackmail is something you should do your utmost to avoid. If you think you’re already in such a situation, you need to be able to recognize the signs to identify emotional blackmail and put an end to it. Here is our guide to dealing with emotional blackmail:

Red Flag Situations
1. If you always seem to end up apologizing for your actions even though you know you did nothing wrong.
2. If your partner or spouse never takes no for an answer.
3. If you always end up giving in to your spouse or partner’s wishes at the expense of your own.
4. If the amount of times you make sacrifices for your partner or spouse far outweighs the number of times they do the same for you.
5. If you’re being intimidated or threatened into abiding by your spouse or partner’s wishes.
The Typical Emotional Blackmail Tactic
A book entitled “Emotional Blackmail”, written by Susan Forward and Donna Frazier, theorizes that those who use emotional blackmail employ a Fear --> Emotion --> Guilt tactic.
The first stage involves the manipulator making the victim fear, anger or disappoint them. In turn, this makes the victim feel obligated to meet their demands. If the victim fails to comply, then the result is feelings of guilt being instilled by the manipulator for not abiding by his or her wishes.
All of this is done very subtly – the manipulator uses tactics to appeal to the victim’s sensibilities. They make their demands seem reasonable, and make the victim feel selfish if they aren’t given what they want.
If you feel that you’re the victim of FOG tactics by your partner or spouse, ask someone who you’re close to give you a different perspective on your relationship by telling you what they see from the outside.

Vulnerable Individuals
Individuals who are most vulnerable to emotional blackmail are the ones who have trouble saying “no”. If you think you’re one of those people, you need to allow yourself to get comfortable with the thought of refusing or rebutting that which you are not content with doing. Think about the tone of voice you’ll use to utter the little word in the future, as well as the words you’ll use to reflect empowerment and help you feel more in control of the situations you’re likely to face.
How to Put a Stop to Emotional Blackmail
1. Prioritize your wants, needs and preferences over those of your partner.
2. Set clear boundaries that cannot be overstepped in any circumstances.
3. Realize that although you may love your partner very much, your well-being comes first. Share your personal priorities and make compromises accordingly.
4. Remember that giving in to emotional blackmail will only make your situation worse.
5. If your partner or spouse is threatening you with physical violence, or alluding to threats of physical violence, leave immediately and alert the authorities of the threats being leveled against you.
6. Reach out to your social support system and seek professional help if you need to.

Wonderful Ways for Eradicating Bad Memories

Life is full of ups and downs, so it’s inevitable that we’ll go through experiences that we’d rather forget sooner or later. Luckily, there are several methods to train your mind to cope with negative memories in a healthy way. Here’s how to forget a bad memory:
Method 1: Creating Healthy Thought Patterns
1. Avoid triggers
If you happen to get blindsided by a bad memory when you go to certain places or are surrounded by certain things, then you need to identify what those are and avoid them. Avoiding them completely will facilitate the bad memory fading out of your mind because you’ll have fewer reasons to call it up.
With the above being said, not all triggers are entirely avoidable. Maybe you simply don’t want to have to change your routine or stop listening to your favorite band just because your ex broke off your relationship last time you were listening to them.

2. Think about the memory until it loses power
Normally, your first instinct is to attempt to avoid thinking about a bad memory, however, as counter-intuitive as it may seem, it actually pays you better to do the opposite. Instead of pushing it out of your mind, allow yourself to remember what happened, and think about it until the memory loses its sting. Eventually, you’ll simply stop thinking about it so much. When it does pop into your mind again, it won’t be as painful anymore. Take comfort in the fact that the event that caused the bad memory is now over.
3. Try memory alteration
Did you know that your memory changes slightly every time you remember something? Your brain makes up for tiny gaps in memory by replacing them with false information. You can actually take advantage of this by replacing the bad parts of a memory with different information. For example, if you remember feeling scared and alone, try to remember what occurred to eventually make you feel better.
4. Focus on happier memories
Our brains can get into ruts that are difficult to climb back out of. If you tend to dwell on bad memories quite a lot, you should train your mind to switch to happy memories instead. Don’t give a bad memory enough time to change your mood or make you feel anxious. The moment that it comes into your mind, shift your thinking to something happier. Practice positive thinking until you override automatically falling into a mental rut. You can do this by pairing a bad memory with a good one. Have a good memory fresh in your mind to keep you from having to rack your brain for something positive in the moments that you’re feeling bad.
5. Learn to be in the present
Teach yourself to focus more of your attention toward the present moment – it’s called being mindful. Focus on the here and now, as opposed to dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Being mindful is a great stress reliever, and can help you to get more out of life. It’s about letting go of things you cannot change, and just “being”. Pay attention to how your body feels right here, right now. Pay attention to your senses – what do you hear, see, taste or smell? Don’t limit your senses to past memories.
Method 2: Having a Positive Attitude
1. Consider what you learned from the event
You can learn something even from the most horrible experience, although it might take you a rather long time to realize it. If someday you can bring yourself to look back at the situation and see the wisdom you gained from it, your bad memory will likely lose some of its sting. Every cloud has a silver lining – you just have to come to realize it. Negative experiences are an inevitable part of life. Difficult experiences make you stronger and make you appreciate the more pleasurable moments. Without feeling bad, you wouldn’t be able to appreciate feeling good. Furthermore, you should always count your blessings and be thankful for what you have in the present moment.
2. Form happy new memories
Bad memories tend to fade away with time, but you can help to speed up the process by living as fully as you can and creating positive new memories to fill your mind with. Spend more time doing the things that you enjoy, and in the company of those that make you happy. The more positive memories you can make, the less significant the negative ones become. Try going to places you’ve never been before so that you can have brand-new experiences wholly untainted by the past. Travel to a new city, or be a tourist in your own. If traveling isn’t for you, try changing up your routine in some other way. Try a new restaurant, or invite all your friends over for a dinner party.
3. Keep yourself busy
A full schedule and a stimulated mind equal less time to dwell on negative thoughts. Make it a point to go out with more friends if you tend to spend a lot of time by yourself, or visit your family more often. Read a good book, or pick up a new hobby. Time spent sitting around with nothing to do makes it more likely that you’ll dwell on bad memories. Physical activity is always good to consider, so take up something new, such as soccer or kickboxing. You can also try walking a certain number of miles each day, or even yoga. Another thing to consider is creativity – pouring your energy into creating something such as a painting, writing a song or finishing a DIY project will restrict your time for thinking about bad memories. Last but not least, volunteering is a great way of helping others while taking your mind off of your own problems.
4. Avoid alcohol and drugs
Mind-altering substances just have the tendency to make everything worse, especially if you’re in a depressed or anxious state. Alcohol can increase depression, irritability, and anxiety, as can drugs. Using alcohol and drugs to forget bad memories often leads to addiction, so you should seek help now if this is already a behavioral pattern for you. Other forms of escapism, such as gambling or overeating, could also be detrimental to your health, and thus should be avoided. Acknowledging such behaviors is important
5. Make your health a priority
Being consumed with negative thoughts can make it difficult to take good care of yourself, but if your body is in a good state of health, it can have a big effect on the way you think. Eat nutritious food, get plenty of sleep and work out a few times a week to keep your bad memories at bay.
