10 Quick Ways to Boost Your Immunity Almost Immediately

Our immune system is essentially our own personal inner-military. A weak military can’t defend itself or attack its enemies very well, rendering it a doomed excuse for protection.

When your immune system is weak, your body is left vulnerable to viruses, allergies, and all the other enemies lurking all around you.

There are plenty of grueling ways you can slowly change your lifestyle to work on this – or you could try these 10 quick life hacks to improve your immunity almost immediately.

Simple Ways to Boost Your Immune System Based on Medical Studies

1. Get Enough Sleep

A sleep deprivation can have surprisingly devastating results on the production of antibodies (your body’s infantry).

It turns out that a good majority of people in a tech-saturated culture are cutting sleep breaks too short. Organize your schedule and get into a routine that fits between seven to nine hours per day.
If a hectic schedule doesn’t permit this, try finding time within the day for a few power naps. To get a better sleep, you can try these herbs, foods or natural substance.

2. Eat a Healthy Diet

Do sleep and diet sound obvious? Because these are essential aspects of living, but many people overlook importance for convenience. The abundance of sugars packed into sugary soft-drinks and processed sweets has a dulling effect on the way your immune system cells function.
If you haven’t already, get your body used to vegetables and fruits of all shapes and colours. They provide vitamins that are essential to a smooth running immune system.

3. Exercise Regularly

A regular exercise routine does much more than shape your body, it fortifies the immune system with proper blood circulation and better sleep.
It shouldn’t take long for your immunity to make clear improvements. While you’re exercising, remember to keep yourself hydrated before, during and after exercising.
This will help flush out toxins and transport the minerals and vitamins from a healthy diet. Also remain wary of the germ loaded bars, grips and machines in public gyms.

4. Proper Hygiene Habits

Sometimes the smallest care concerning hygiene can make your body vulnerable from light to devastating health issues. Stick to the basics, such as:
  • Wash your hands a few times a day, especially after the bathroom
  • Take regular showers
  • Don’t share drinks directly with others often
  • Maintain food hygiene and prepare food safely
Think of the things that make you vulnerable to germs and disease and do your best to avoid them.

5. Manage Stress Levels

Harvard Health publication mentions that stress of any kind can have negative effects on your immune levels.
Both social and physical stress that you experience delays the production of antibodies.
The sad thing is that stress can be, and often is, an unavoidable factor in many people’s lives.
The best you can do for your body is find ways to alleviate the stress, like with meditation, yoga, exercise, and new hobbies. It’s no coincidence that many people that live great past their prime are level headed.

6. Don’t Smoke

According to the medical studies, smoking presents a whole lot of harm to your body in several ways:
  • It suppresses your immune system weaker and slows the defense of antibodies when you are exposed to outer threats.
  • The clouds of carcinogens billowing down the esophagus rips up soft tissues, leaving you more vulnerable to an infection.
  • It may be a difficult addiction to quit, but many former smokers will attest that they feel healthier than ever.
Smoking is also one of the habits to stop right now if you want to be healthy as mentioned in my earlier posts so many times.

7. Step Out of Isolation and Have a Positive Attitude

Social anxiety can lead some people to isolating themselves at every given chance from the world around them. Though the exact causes for it haven’t been pinpointed, there are several studies that can back the effectiveness of a healthy social life on the immune system.

Get out and form friendships with new people, step out of isolation, and watch your immunity remain strong.

There are studies that mention the positive effect of the sense of humor on the immune system.
Both positive attitude and maintaining social relationship with family and friends are highly beneficial.

8. Get Your Vitamin D

Studies show that without a healthy dose of vitamin D3, the body is much more vulnerable to autoimmunity and infections.

People fail to realize their vitamin intake and fall sick despite an otherwise healthy diet. You can find more information on how to increase your vitamin D levels in my previous article about the common disease caused by vitamin D deficeincy.

9. Balance Your Alcohol

When somebody consumes an excessive amount of alcohol they often don’t consider the damage they are putting their body through.
In large amounts it restricts the dispatch of immune defenses and leaves the body susceptible to harm.
If you’re old enough to drink you shouldn’t completely avoid it in fear of your health: according to the British Journal of Nutrition, a moderate amount of alcohol can actually benefit the immune system.

10. Consider Taking Probiotics

Many people associate bacteria with a potential to degrade health. Probiotics are a healthy type of bacteria that help the digestive system, immune repair, and immune defense. They keep the bad bacteria from proliferating and ensure a healthier lifestyle.

According to medical studies, foods like yogurt, miso, apple cider vinegar and kefir have good probiotics that can boost your health. But you can also purchase a high dose probiotic supplement that will give your body an ample dose of good bacteria.

Building your internal army isn’t very difficult. Once you’ve picked up on the right habits, your body will settle into a groove that is difficult to lose. Consider these immunity hacks for a happier and healthier life.

Feeling Stressed or Anxious? Here's How You Can Beat It!

Stress and anxiety are prevalent in today's age, but the overwhelming feelings created, need not dominate and wreak havoc on your life. Overcoming stress is more straightforward than you think. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) have come up with a list of successful coping mechanisms for making depression, stress, and anxiety mere inconveniences. Try a combination of the following strategies.

1. Time out
When you’re experiencing stress or anxiety, sometimes you need to take a step back. You can try doing yoga, listening to music or getting a massage. Meditating and relaxation techniques can also help ease your mind. When you step away from the problem, it's easier to clear your head.
2. Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine
While they may seem like an easy, instant fix, they can actually aggravate your anxiety or stress levels, and possibly trigger panic attacks. This does not mean that you need to cut the two out altogether. Rather, limit your daily intake to reduce unwanted stress and aggravation.
3. Get More Sleep  A lack of sleep will have a negative affect even when you are in the best of health, but it is even worse when you're stressed and anxious. In fact, you need more rest and sleep when you’re stressed so make sure not to cut back on shuteye.
4. Deep Breaths  Avoid panicking by focusing on your breath. Inhale and exhale slowly. This is an instant relief to an overwhelming feeling.
5. Eat Well-Balanced Meals  When you’re stressed and anxious you might want to turn to processed snack foods for an instant boost. Alternatively, you may be too anxious to eat and might opt to skip meals. But, for health reasons, it’s important not to do this. Eat whole meals with healthy balanced food choices and keep energy-boosting healthy snacks at hand too.
6. Dedicate Time to Exercise
Keeping your body active makes you feel good and helps maintain your overall health, which, in turn, can help you fight stress. Fitting exercise into your daily life does not have to take up large chunks of your time. You can break it down into 3 to 5 sessions of 30 minutes per week. You can try things like walking, dancing, biking or even jogging.
7. Do Your Best A lot of the time we’re too focused on perfect goals that are hard to achieve, increasing our stress levels. Instead, reset the goal posts, try your best, and be proud of your redefined success.

8. Count to 10 Breathing deeply, counting to 10, or even 20 can be an instant relief. It sounds childish but counting forces you to focus on your breath, and the numbers can briefly distract your rushed or anxious mind.

9. Perspective Accept that you are not God and cannot control everything. It’s important to put your stress into perspective. Consider some other times where you felt stressed and weigh up how relative it is. Have you or others you know had it worse before?

10. Positive Attitude Required  When facing adversity, stress, or anxiety it’s vital to maintain a positive attitude. Not everyone is a natural optimist, but choosing to focus on the positives can help drive away, or at least replace, negative thoughts, enabling you to get on with the task at hand.

11. Talk it Out
It’s hard to bear stress alone. Talking to somebody, will help offload the stressful emotions. Friends and family can often give you perspective. Seek support on online forums or join a stress support group. For some, seeking a professional who is trained to properly listen is a better option.
12. Get Involved  Getting actively involved with your community allows you to have a break from everyday stress and lend your skills to a worthy cause. It can also help you create a support network of friends.

13. Pinpoint Triggers  Becoming aware of anxiety triggers can really help you figure out the best way to cope and decide if it can be avoided. It might be work, family, a place or person. Write down the times you feel stressed and see if you can identify a pattern.

14. Laughter is the Best Medicine  Another way to keep your anxiety at bay is with a healthy dose of laughter. Welcome humor into your life in whichever way you can.

People living with incurable cancers urge more research

A man hesitated to buy light bulbs guaranteed for up to 10 years, thinking they'd outlast him. Another woman debated filling a prescription for a $13,000-a-month drug that keeps cancer from worsening for three months on average and carries six pages of warnings.

"There are so many of us living with cancers that can't be cured," he said. "We study the treatments but we don't study what it's like to be the person going through treatment."

Millions of people live with metastatic cancer - disease that has spread through the body and is considered incurable. They are surviving longer as treatments improve, often seeing cancer subside and flare again and again. Now many are pushing to be included more widely in research and to have it focus more on the patient's point of view.

"It's really about time that happened," said Dr. Patients should be asked what side effects and risks they'll accept, "not just treated as research subjects," she said.

Guidelines on how cancer survivors should be monitored later in life often assume the disease is in remission rather than still being treated, they wrote. Many patients now live for years with advanced cancer: Sixteen percent of people with widely spread lung cancer survive five years. Patients wonder if they should have genetic testing, how they'll deal with the cost of treatment and whether their doctors can keep up with the latest discoveries.

"We could also use some guidance even on seemingly irrelevant health decisions," such as whether it's worth it to be tested for other medical conditions or to take a cholesterol-lowering medicine "when you don't even know if you should take a chance on purchasing airline tickets for a summer vacation," the survivors wrote .

The man said hormone therapy and dozens of radiation treatments for his prostate cancer caused extreme fatigue. A marathoner, he said he "went from somebody who could run 50 miles, or 26 miles, to somebody who gets short of breath going up the stairs."

"I've got terrible sleep, hot flashes every 45 minutes," mood swings and depression, he said. Last summer, "I actually admitted myself to the hospital so I wouldn't kill myself."

A good psychiatrist, help from his family and a support group, and a new antidepressant have helped.

When she was 34, the woman was treated for Hodgkin lymphoma with radiation that led to breast and stomach cancers in later years. Two years ago, doctors found an unusual and inoperable soft tissue cancer called a sarcoma between her throat and windpipe. She said she has lived "in this constant fear of the other shoe dropping."

A jazz pianist and radio show host from Gary, Indiana, who spoke at the Atlanta conference as a patient advocate, talked about the uncertainty cancer patients live with. He had a cancerous kidney removed in 1996, but in 2007 learned the disease had spread to his lungs, liver and brain.

"They say if you go five years, you're kind of in the clear," but that's often not true, he said. He joined a study testing an experimental drug that helped him for five years until the company abandoned it.

"It wasn't working for enough people but it was saving my life," he said. His doctor persuaded the company to keep making the drug for him for another year, long enough for a new drug to come out that seems to be keeping his cancer in check.

Several studies are examining "what allows some people to live a very long time with incurable cancer," said a Dr. Around 750 women have given extensive details on their treatments and lifestyles, and tumor samples are being analyzed for genetic clues.

The survivors say they are focusing on living. She filled the prescription she'd been debating. He bought the long-lasting light bulbs.

"I figured, even if I can't enjoy them, the next person who lives in our house might," he said.

ps- it is very true that positive attitude matters a lot. Another important advise that I got from my oncologist friend is " don't pity yourself, nor anyone pity you for cancer". I think, this holds true not just for cancer but all diseases. I've seen that a lady who had stroke was able to overcome it and is moving around without any problem, at the same time, a man who had stroke, living on self pity and other's pity, has been worsening his condition. He never did the exercises that were necessary, always saying that I don't have hands and legs ! I'm also a cancer survivor with COPD, fibromyalgia and other issues. But I feel each day is a bonus, I do what I love doing and what makes me happy. I can never sit idle, feel waste of time, very rarely I watch TV, but will do my crochet at that time. Right now part of the team making prosthetic for breast cancer patients. I believe in mind over matter, if the mind wills, you can conquer a mountain too ! Good luck to all out there, especially cancer survivors, be happy, spread your smile, it will make you feel better, continue with your hobby or start a new one !

7 Interesting Facts About The Human Immune System

The human body is an absolute marvel of science and biology, with every limb, bone, tissue and cell having their own important functions. One of the most important systems in the body has to be the immune system. Our immunity is what keeps us alive in a world teeming with bacteria and germs. If you've ever seen the movie "The Boy In The Plastic Bubble" (1976), you might gain some understanding of what the world can be like if you have no immune system.

Our knowledge about this particular system has revolutionized medicine, propelling the creation of most vaccinations, that have drastically increased the average human life span. To give you a little bit more insight into this incredible system of warriors and protectors, here are 7 facts you may not have known about your immune system.

1. Laughter can really be the best medicine
Studies have shown the general positive effects that laughter can have on the body. Laughter (and enjoyment in general) can increase the production of dopamine, serotonin and other feel-good hormones released by the brain, which can drastically reduce stress.
According to a study, laughter can also boost your immune system by increasing the cytotoxicity (which is basically the ability of one type of cell to foreign cells) of NK cells (natural killer cells). Natural Killer Cells are the type of white blood cells that can actually differentiate between infected or cancerous cells, and normal ones.
They can avoid the latter and wipe out only the former in a much more effective way.

2. White blood cells are the 1%
White blood cells, also called Leukocytes, are the knights of the human body, fighting off harmful bacteria and keeping your body free of infections and viruses. It is one of the most important components of the human body. So one would think that the bloodstream is chock-full of these heroes, but in reality, they only make up 1% of the cells in your blood.

In this case, though, the 1% is pretty large, with up to 10,000 white blood cells in every microlitre (one-millionth of a litre) of blood. That counts for a lot when you consider the fact that there are 5 liters of blood in the human body. These cells are always on the move in the bloodstream, hunting down possible invaders, anywhere they might be.

3. Cows revolutionized our immunity
People first began experimenting with inoculation in the 1700's by introducing milder, but still deadly elements of the smallpox virus taken from previously inoculated patients, so the immune system could develop a resistance to the virus. Though this method was quite effective, it still resulted in many deaths.

It was eventually discovered that dairymaids had developed a stronger immunity to smallpox than most people when they had been previously exposed to cowpox, a disease with a lower fatality rate than Variolation (which is what the method of inoculation for small pox, also known as Variola, was called). Using this knowledge and the cowpox virus, Edward Jenner pioneered a small pox vaccine in 1796.

4. There is such a thing as too clean
The common belief is that the cleaner our environment is, the safer we are. But this is a misconception bred and borne by us. In truth, an extremely clean environment can halt the development of your immune system.

Your immune system ends up not getting exposed to many of the foreign particles that usually help it develop anti-bodies and become stronger. This can be especially problematic for children, whose immune systems require that exposure to develop and grow.

5. Allergies are just the immune system’s mistakes
Everybody makes mistakes and your immune system is no different. Most of the reactions your body has to substances you're allergic to arise because the immune system gets confused and mistakenly takes the foreign substance, be it pollen, peanuts or dust, to be a dangerous foreign particle.

So it reacts the way it's built to react to anything that it has understood to be harmful and attacks the substance in your body, doing some damage to your body in the process. This causes many of the symptoms we experience, from itchiness to swelling in different areas.

6. Women are more vulnerable to immune system  attacks

Autoimmune diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis, basically occur when the immune system gets all turned up. It becomes extra defensive and is unable to differentiate harmful foreign bodies from healthy cells and tissues in the body. So it begins to attack perfectly healthy cells, which can cause inflammation, severe pain and numerous other serious health problems. But as it turns out, autoimmune diseases are somewhat selective.

While less than 10% of the population in the USA suffer from auto-immune diseases, an article published in 2008 observed that nearly a whopping 80% of those suffering from autoimmune diseases were women. Women can be especially vulnerable to these diseases during ovulation, pregnancy and immediately after giving birth.

7. Stress, sleep, sunlight and your immune system Stress is not good for your immune system. Too much stress may result in your immune system getting suppressed, which directly increases the likelihood of you catching a virus.

Lack of sleep similarly affects your immune system, reducing the number of natural killer cells in your body, and can even reduce the effects of vaccinations as a result, as observed in a 2012 study.

Sunlight can have mixed effects. Exposure to sunlight can increase the Vitamin D in your body, as well as the production of serotonin, which keeps you happy, and can help reduce stress. But high levels of exposure to ultraviolet radiation and sunlight can result in the suppression of the immune system, and thereby an increased vulnerability to infections and viruses. As with most things, a little is good for you, a lot can be bad.
