Life-Extending Effects: How Serotonin, Dopamine, and the Smell of Food Affect Aging

The smell of food blocks the life-extending effect of a restricted diet. These drugs may unblock it.

A research study using worms provides new clues about the role of serotonin and dopamine in aging.

It’s common knowledge that a healthy diet is essential to a healthy life. And while many people follow specialized diets to trim down or improve their overall health, scientists interested in aging have been actively studying the life-extending effects of dietary restriction and fasting.

“There’s a concept called hormesis in biology, the idea of which is what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” said Scott Leiser, Ph.D., an assistant professor in Molecular & Integrative Physiology, and Internal Medicine at University of Michigan Medical School.

“One of the stresses that’s been most studied is dietary restriction, shown in many different organisms to extend lifespan and in people to improve health.”

However, as anyone on a strict weight loss regimen can attest, the mere smell of delicious food can be enough to break one’s willpower. What’s more, previous research actually found that in fruit flies, attractive food smells are enough to blunt the life-extending effect of a restricted diet. That study was from Leiser’s colleague Scott Pletcher, Ph.D., also of the Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology.

Investigating the fmo-2 Gene in Lifespan Extension

In a new study published on June 7, 2022, in Nature Communications, Leiser, first authors Hillary Miller, Ph.D., and Shijiao Huang, Ph.D., and their team build on that research to figure out why this is the case and whether a drug could block the phenomenon.

In the roundworm C. elegans, lifespan extension in response to environmental stressors such as dietary restriction involves the activation of the fmo-2 gene. The researchers used the transparent nature of C. elegans to be able to see, in real time, the levels of FMO proteins.

When worms were limited in the amount of food they could eat, the FMO protein, which was highlighted using a fluorescent marker, lit up “like a Christmas tree…it was bright red,” noted Leiser. However, when the worms were exposed to food smells, there was considerably less activation of FMO, leading to a loss of life extension.

One of the main issues of dietary restriction as a potential approach for life extension in people is how difficult it is. But, said Leiser, “what if you could give yourself a drug that confused your body into thinking you were restricting your diet?”

Drug Compounds That Mimic Dietary Restriction

Building on earlier research showing that neurotransmitters regulate longevity resulting from dietary restriction, the team screened compounds known to act on neurons.

They found three compounds that could prevent the reversal of fmo-2 induction in the presence of food: an antidepressant that blocks the neurotransmitter serotonin, and two antipsychotic drugs used to treat schizophrenia, both of which block the neurotransmitter dopamine.

“We know serotonin and dopamine are major players in the reward portion of the brain and tend to be involved in satiety and food response signals,” said Leiser. “The fact that the drugs we found were antagonizing this suggests you are blocking aspects of these pathways.” Ultimately, the drugs enabled the life extension effect of FMO, even in the presence of the smell of food.

These specific drugs are unlikely to be prescribed for this effect however, given their many potentially dangerous side effects. But they provide important clues about the fmo-2 activation pathway and its effect on life extension.

7 Interesting Facts About The Human Immune System

The human body is an absolute marvel of science and biology, with every limb, bone, tissue and cell having their own important functions. One of the most important systems in the body has to be the immune system. Our immunity is what keeps us alive in a world teeming with bacteria and germs. If you've ever seen the movie "The Boy In The Plastic Bubble" (1976), you might gain some understanding of what the world can be like if you have no immune system.

Our knowledge about this particular system has revolutionized medicine, propelling the creation of most vaccinations, that have drastically increased the average human life span. To give you a little bit more insight into this incredible system of warriors and protectors, here are 7 facts you may not have known about your immune system.

1. Laughter can really be the best medicine
Studies have shown the general positive effects that laughter can have on the body. Laughter (and enjoyment in general) can increase the production of dopamine, serotonin and other feel-good hormones released by the brain, which can drastically reduce stress. 

According to a study by Dr. Stephen Sinatra, laughter can also boost your immune system by increasing the cytotoxicity (which is basically the ability of one type of cell to foreign cells) of NK cells (natural killer cells). Natural Killer Cells are the type of white blood cells that can actually differentiate between infected or cancerous cells and normal ones. 

They can avoid the latter and wipe out only the former in a much more effective way. 

2. White blood cells are the 1%
White blood cells, also called Leukocytes, are the knights of the human body, fighting off harmful bacteria and keeping your body free of infections and viruses. It is one of the most important components of the human body. So one would think that the bloodstream is chock-full of these heroes, but in reality, they only make up 1% of the cells in your blood. 

In this case, though, the 1% is pretty large, with up to 10,000 white blood cells in every microlitre (one-millionth of a liter) of blood. That counts for a lot when you consider the fact that there are 5 liters of blood in the human body. These cells are always on the move in the bloodstream, hunting down possible invaders, anywhere they might be.

3. Cows revolutionized our immunity
People first began experimenting with inoculation in the 1700's by introducing milder, but still deadly elements of the smallpox virus taken from previously inoculated patients, so the immune system could develop a resistance to the virus. Though this method was quite effective, it still resulted in many deaths. 

It was eventually discovered that dairymaids had developed a stronger immunity to smallpox than most people when they had been previously exposed to cowpox, a disease with a lower fatality rate than Variolation (which is what the method of inoculation for smallpox, also known as Variola, was called). Using this knowledge and the cowpox virus, Edward Jenner pioneered a smallpox vaccine in 1796.

4. There is such a thing as too clean
The common belief is that the cleaner our environment is, the safer we are. But this is a misconception bred and borne by us. In truth, an extremely clean environment can halt the development of your immune system. 

Your immune system ends up not getting exposed to many of the foreign particles that usually help it develop anti-bodies and become stronger. This can be especially problematic for children, whose immune systems require exposure to develop and grow. 

5. Allergies are just the immune system’s mistakes
Everybody makes mistakes and your immune system is no different. Most of the reactions your body has to substances you're allergic to arise because the immune system gets confused and mistakenly takes the foreign substance, be it pollen, peanuts or dust, to be a dangerous foreign particle. 

So it reacts the way it's built to react to anything that it has understood to be harmful and attacks the substance in your body, doing some damage to your body in the process. This causes many of the symptoms we experience, from itchiness to swelling in different areas. 

6. Women are more vulnerable to immune system attacks
Autoimmune diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis, basically occur when the immune system gets all turned up. It becomes extra defensive and is unable to differentiate harmful foreign bodies from healthy cells and tissues in the body. So it begins to attack perfectly healthy cells, which can cause inflammation, severe pain and numerous other serious health problems. But as it turns out, autoimmune diseases are somewhat selective. 

While less than 10% of the population in the USA suffer from auto-immune diseases, an article published in 2008 in the American Journal of Pathology observed that nearly a whopping 80% of those suffering from autoimmune diseases were women. Women can be especially vulnerable to these diseases during ovulation, pregnancy and immediately after giving birth. 

7. Stress, sleep, sunlight and your immune system
Stress i
s not good for your immune system. Too much stress may result in your immune system getting suppressed, which directly increases the likelihood of you catching a virus. 

Lack of sleep similarly affects your immune system, reducing the number of natural killer cells in your body, and can even reduce the effects of vaccinations as a result, as observed in a 2012 study. Sunlight can have mixed effects. 

Exposure to sunlight can increase the Vitamin D in your body, as well as the production of serotonin, which keeps you happy and can help reduce stress. But high levels of exposure to ultraviolet radiation and sunlight can result in the suppression of the immune system, and thereby an increased vulnerability to infections and viruses. As with most things, a little is good for you, a lot can be bad.

Green Tea Benefits Brain Health

For the study, researchers analyzed data from around 300 participants for 18 months while they consumed one of three diets: a standard healthy diet, a traditional calorie-restricted Mediterranean diet, and the green-Mediterranean diet, which included green tea and Mankai. They found that higher levels of certain proteins were associated with faster brain aging, and that those protein levels decreased in those following the green-Mediterranean diet. The researchers attributed this protective effect to the anti-inflammatory molecules contained in green tea and Mankai.

But there are plenty of other brain-boosting benefits of green tea. For starters, green tea consumption is associated with reduced risk of cognitive impairment, improved memory, and potential prevention of neurodegenerative diseases, Landry says, whose current research focuses on identifying the optimal diets for chronic disease prevention. “The protective benefits found in green tea can be attributed to polyphenols,” he explains. “These are plant compounds that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. [They] work by scavenging free radicals in the body and also by enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity.”

Additionally, L-theanine, also found in green tea, is an amino acid that increases dopamine and GABA in the brain, which can improve mood and sleep quality, while also having a relaxation effect, says Stacie Stephenson, DC, a practitioner of functional and integrative medicine and board member of The American Nutrition Association. “Generally, many research studies have correlated green tea consumption with better brain aging,” she says. “One meta-analysis from 2025 of 18 studies covering nearly 59,000 participants between the ages of 50 to 69 over the past 10 years showed that the more green tea participants consumed, the less cognitive impairment they had.” 

In addition, green tea’s catechins help calm brain inflammation by lowering inflammatory markers like TNF-α and IL-1β, says Michelle Routhenstein, RD, a cardiology dietitian at EntirelyNourished.com. “This anti-inflammatory effect further supports long-term brain protection and healthy aging,” she notes. Green tea also benefits how we think and feel day-to-day, says Alexander LeRitz, RDN, a registered dietitian at JM Nutrition. “Its unique mix of caffeine and L-theanine works together to improve alertness, focus, and working memory by increasing alpha brain-wave activity,” he says. “This creates a calm but attentive state which many people describe as feeling ‘clear and steady,’ rather than the sharp rise and crash that can come with coffee.”

Additional Health Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea doesn’t just benefit your brain. “The polyphenols that reduce oxidative stress and inflammation likely contribute to better heart health, lower cancer risk, better blood sugar regulation, less joint pain, and may even contribute to longer life,” Stephenson says. More specifically, the green tea catechins help to lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure by boosting nitric oxide, which relaxes vessel walls and enhances blood flow, Routhenstein says. Additionally, regular consumption of green tea can also help prevent LDL or “bad” cholesterol from becoming oxidized, which is a key step that can lead to plaque formation in the arteries, she notes. “We also see some improvements with insulin sensitivity and reduced risk for diabetes,” Landry says. And according to Ben-Asher, green tea also supports the immune system, reducing the risk of infections and viruses thanks to the polyphenol content.

“All in all, green tea is one of those simple daily habits that can support your health on several fronts,“ LeRitz says. “The blend of polyphenols, caffeine, and L-theanine doesn’t just lift your energy—it also protects the body at a cellular level. As a registered dietitian, I often describe green tea as one of the simplest, evidence-backed habits to support both mental and physical longevity.”
