Removing a Painful Splinter Has Never Been Simpler!

Splinters are small fragments of metal, glass, or wood that are embedded in your skin. They can be very painful and need to be dealt with as quickly as possible in order to relieve discomfort and the possibility of infection. The majority of us try to dig the splinter out using a needle or some tweezers, but this is not a safe method as it can significantly increase the risk of infection. There are loads of other safe and simple home remedies that make it easier to remove splinters without added complications.

Here are the top 10 home remedies to remove splinters safely and without pain:

1. Duct Tape

This is one of the easiest methods to remove a splinter. This simple remedy works best when some of the splinter is still sticking out of the skin. It will not work for fully embedded splinters.

Method

1. Use lukewarm water and soap to wash the skin surrounding the splinter, and allow it to dry.

2. Place a piece of duct tape over it.

3. Gently rub over the top of the tape with your fingertip.

4. Wait 5 minutes, then pull the tape off in one motion. The splinter will come out with the tape.

5. Finish by cleaning the area again with some lukewarm water.

2. White Vinegar

White vinegar is another very effective home remedy for splinters as the acidity of the vinegar will cause the splinter to break through the surface of the skin, making it easier to pull out with some tweezers.

Method

1. Pour some white vinegar into a small bowl.

2. Soak the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes.

3. Check whether the splinter has risen out of your skin. If so, pull it out using some tweezers. If not, continue to soak the area until it does so.

4. After the splinter has been removed, rinse the area with lukewarm water.

3. Baking Soda

Baking soda is good for those splinters that are difficult to see, as well as those that are deeply embedded in the skin. Baking soda helps to reduce pain and pushes the splinter to the surface, so it is easier to pull out.

Method

1. Mix water and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to form a thick paste.

2. Spread this paste onto a bandage and place the bandage over the affected area.

3. After 24 hours, take the bandage off.

4. If the splinter is visible, pull it out. If not, repeat the above steps and wait another 24 hours.

5. After the splinter has been removed, rinse the skin gently with lukewarm water.

For more uses of baking soda, click here.

4. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide disinfects the area and reduces inflammation so that the splinter is easier to remove.

Method

1. Soak a cotton ball in 3% hydrogen peroxide.

2. Secure the cotton ball on the affected area with tape.

3. Leave it for a few hours.

4. Remove the cotton ball and pull the splinter out with a pair of clean tweezers.

5. Rinse the area with lukewarm water.

5. Epsom Salt

Epsom salt works wonders on deeply lodged splinters as it draws water out of the skin cells, bringing the splinter to the surface.

Method

1. Place a pinch of Epsom salt on a bandage.

2. Place the bandage on the affected area.

3. Leave it there for the whole day.

4. Remove the bandage in the evening.

5. Pull the splinter out using some tweezers.

If you would like to read about other uses of Epsom salt, click here.

6. Banana Peel

Banana peels contain enzymes that will soften the skin and make the splinter move to the surface. Furthermore, its moisturizing and antimicrobial properties will prevent any further infection.

Method

1. Cut a small piece of banana peel.

2. Place the peel (with the white side down) on the affected area, and secure it with some tape.

3. Leave it overnight.

4. The next morning, remove the splinter using some tweezers.

Banana peel also has many other uses, you can read more about them by clicking here.

7. Raw Potato

This remedy works best when the splinter is partially visible, not when it is embedded deep in the skin.

Method

1. Wash a raw potato and cut off a thick slice.

2. Place the potato slice on the splinter, make sure the fleshy part is touching the splinter.

3. Gently press down so that the splinter pierces the potato.

4. Carefully remove the potato slice, along with the splinter.

8. Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender oil will help draw the splinter out, and thanks to its antimicrobial properties, it will also help prevent any infections from occurring.

Method

1. Apply a couple of drops of lavender essential oil to the affected area.

2. Leave it for a few hours.

3. From time to time, check whether the splinter has risen to the skin's surface.

4. Once it has, remove it with a pair of tweezers

9. Honey
Honey encourages the splinter to move toward the surface so it's easier to remove. Furthermore, due to its moisturizing and antiseptic properties, it will sooth the skin and prevent infections.

Method

1. Spread a lot of honey onto the affected area.

2. Place a bandage over it and leave overnight.

3. The next morning, pull the splinter out using some tweezers.

4. After rinsing with some lukewarm water, reapply some more honey to heal the skin.

10. Bread and Milk

This remedy has been used for centuries to remove splinters.

Method

1. Dip some bread in some warm milk.

2. Apply this to the area and secure with a bandage.

3. Leave overnight.

4. Remove the next morning - the splinter should come with it.

5. Clean the affected area with some lukewarm water to prevent infections.

Additional Tips

Once the splinter has been removed, make sure that the area is cleaned properly to prevent infections.
Keep the area clean until it is completely healed.
Don't squeeze a splinter to try to push it to the surface, It could break into tiny pieces and make it even more difficult to remove.
Use rubbing alcohol to sterilize the tips of the tweezers you are going to use to remove a splinter.

Cipla's new strawberry-flavored medicine can save kids from AIDS

In a bid to save thousands of children from HIV AIDS, Indian pharmaceutical company Cipla has introduced a revolutionary new drug called Quadrimune.

The medicine, developed in partnership with not-for-profit Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), carries the flavor of strawberries and can be consumed easily by toddlers and babies.

Plus, it is relatively inexpensive as well.

Here's all about it.
Problem with HIV medication for kids

While we already have medicinal treatments for babies living with HIV, all those methods revolve around old, bitter-tasting pills or syrups with as much as 40% alcohol content.

Also, all the current medicines require refrigeration, which is often a problem in regions like Africa, where warm temperatures and electricity are common issues. In fact, people tend to bury medicines in the sand for cooling.
Data
1.8 million children living with HIV, 300 die every day

Going by the numbers, nearly 1.8 million children are estimated to be living with HIV (90% being in sub-Saharan Africa) and merely 54% of them get treated properly. This means nearly 300 children die from AIDS every day.

Solution
Now, Cipla has a pleasant-tasting solution

After years of struggle with these problems, Cipla has finally developed the answer - Quadrimune.

The drug comes in the form of a capsule, but its strawberry-flavored granules, which are nearly as big as sugar grains, can be easily swallowed by infants and kids.

Parents can make it even more palatable by mixing it with milk or baby cereal.

Advantage
Also, it doesn't require refrigeration

Quadrimune has been designed with a combination of four heat-stable antiretrovirals (ARVs), which means there's no need for refrigeration for the drug.

"The new Quadrimune is pleasant-tasting, heat-stable, and easy-to-use," Bernard Pécoul, Executive Director of DNDi said. "We will finally have a treatment designed specifically for infants and young children, who are at the highest risk of dying if they do not receive treatment."

Once approved, it would save thousands of kids

Quadrimune is being reviewed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and should receive approval by next year.

Once that is done, the drug will cost less than $1/day for a child between 10-14kg and 50 cents/day for younger toddlers.

This would hopefully make the treatment of HIV accessible to more people and save tens of thousands of children worldwide.

The psychological and cognitive benefits related to breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has benefits for both the baby and the mother. The benefits are so significant that most organizations responsible for maternity and childcare in most countries recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life and continued breastfeeding through 12 months or more. Breast milk is species-specific, made uniquely and specifically for the human infant. Proteins, minerals, and nutrients are present in amounts, form, and ratio which can be easily absorbed, digested and handled by the rapidly maturing organs like kidneys, stomach and blood of the infant.

Cholesterol and docosahexaenoic acid have been shown to play a role in the development of the central nervous system development and may contribute to the enhanced intelligence quotient measurements reported in breastfed infants. Dr. shares how mother’s milk works best for the child.

Breast milk with large amounts of immunologically active contents protects infants against some life-threatening infections like ear infections (otitis media) croup, pneumonia, and gastrointestinal infections, There is also evidence that breastfeeding provides protection against some non-infectious illnesses such as asthmatic wheezing, eczema, childhood lymphoma, insulin-dependent childhood-onset diabetes, and obesity in children who are exclusively breastfed for the first 4 to 6 months of life.

Cognitive and psychological benefits for breastfed infants have been suggested, including those for developmental performance, accurate vision, performance in school and performance on standardized and intelligence quotient tests. Exclusive breastfeeding helps in reducing the infant mortality rate due to common childhood illnesses such as diarrhoea or pneumonia, a much-needed target for developing countries. Infant mortality rate (IMR) of India has reduced by 42 per cent over 11 years from 57 per 1,000 live births in 2006 to 33 in 2017, as per the latest government data released on May 30, 2019.

According to WHO and UNICEF, a newborn should be fed with breast milk exclusively for 6 months and should continue up to 2 years. Also as per the July 2018 report. Capture the Moment by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) delaying breastfeeding after birth can be life-threatening for the baby. To enable the mothers to establish and sustain exclusive breastfeeding for six months, it is recommended to initiate breastfeeding within the first few hours of life and to make sure that the infant only receives breast milk without any additional food or drink, not even water, there should be no usage of bottles and pacifiers.

Potential benefits to the mother include improved postpartum recovery, less postnatal depression, a lower incidence of subsequent obesity, a decreased risk of osteoporosis, increased spacing between births, lower cost of providing adequate infant nutrition, and reduced incidence of both breast and ovarian cancers.

Imaging technique could enable surgeons to see and remove malignant tumours with ease

Researchers have developed a new imagining technique that could enable surgeons to clearly see malignant growth that is often difficult to completely eliminate. The technique uses a synthetic version of a compound found in scorpion venom.

The new imagining technique uses a special high-sensitivity near-infrared camera, along with the imaging agent tozuleristide or BLZ-100. The agent contains a synthetic version of an amino acid compound found in scorpion venom.

Like the natural form of the compound, the synthetic version is not toxic and binds to tumour cells. It is attached to a fluorescent dye that glows when stimulated by a near-infrared laser.

Viewed through the cameras, the imaging agent might allow neurosurgeons to detect the boundaries between tumours and healthy brain tissue during surgery, improving the opportunity for surgeons to remove tumour cells while sparing normal brain tissue.

With this fluorescence, you see the tumour so much clearer because it lights up like a Christmas tree, said senior author of the study.

This is important because of the sprawling nature of gliomas, the type of brain tumours imaged during the trial. Gliomas are highly lethal and comprise about 33 % of all brain tumours.

They fan infiltrate brain tissue with tentacle-like structures, making them difficult to distinguish from normal brain tissue. They typically do not respond to traditional therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation. The key to extending patient survival depends on a surgeon's ability to detect and remove all parts of the tumour.

In the clinical trial, 17 adult patients with brain tumours were given varying doses of BLZ-100 before surgery. Despite the varying amounts of the drug given, the majority of tumours fluoresced, including both high-and-low-grade gliomas.

After surgery, patients were monitored for 30 days. Investigators found that none of the patients had any serious adverse responses to the drug and that the imaging system was safe and could be useful for imaging the brain tumours during surgery.

More clinical trials are needed to further evaluate the safety of the imaging system and demonstrate the system's effectiveness before BLZ-100 can gain approval from the givernment, and the camera used in the trial must be refined before it can be used seamlessly in an operating room. But the researcher said the clinical trial results were promising.

For a surgeon, this seamless integration of fluorescence imaging into the surgical microscope is very appealing, he said.

Unlike other experimental systems that are bulkier or rely on multiple cameras, the new imaging system uses a single camera that takes both near-infrared and while-light images by alternating between a laser and normal white lights at very high speeds. This technology enables surgeons to easily switch back and forth between normal vision using a surgical microscope and fluorescent super-vision on a nearby monitor, in real time.

The next phase of this research, already underway, is a clinical trial involving paediatric brain tumours. This trial will serve as a data set for potential government approval. A similar adult clinical trial is also being planned.

This technique in this study holds great promise not only for brain tumours but for many other cancer types in which we need to identify the margins of cancers. The ultimate goal is to bring greater precision to the surgical care we provide to our patients, said the doctor.

Signs of a Bed Bug Problem !

Bed bug infestations are on the rise in the United States. These pesky little critters can be difficult to spot, but they do leave behind some distinct trails, so check out these subtle signs that indicate that you might have a bed bug problem.

1. People You Know Have Had Bed Bugs
Beg bug infestations can spread from house to house, especially in apartment blocks where they don’t have to travel far. There are now more people affected by bed bugs in the United States than ever before – they were virtually unheard of just ten years ago. Therefore, if you know someone who has had a bed bug problem, be safe and check your home for intruders.

2. There Are Small, Itchy Bites on Your Body
Bed bugs leave small, itchy, and inconsistent bites on their victim’s body. Therefore, if you notice clusters of bites, especially if they’re in straight lines of three, you need to check for bed bugs. This isn’t a sure sign, though. Some people might not even show any signs of having been bitten by bed bugs. This is why it’s important for people to inspect for bed bugs on regular occasions.
3. You Frequently Stay in Hotel Rooms
This is one of the primary ways that bed bugs spread. If you’re staying in a hotel, you really should give the room and bed a thorough survey before staying the night. If you notice any signs of bed bugs, ask to be relocated to a different room. When leaving, you should always examine your luggage too.

4. There Are Dark Stains on Your Sheets or Pillowcases
Since bed bugs are messy, they often leave behind small stains wherever they’ve been. Any odd stains that appear on your sheets or pillowcases should be inspected and not ignored.
5. You’ve Only Looked for Bed Bugs in Your Bed

Despite their name, bed bugs can thrive in multiple locations outside of a bed. According to a 2015 survey, nearly all (99.6%) of pest professionals nationwide have treated bed bugs in the last year, and many of those cases didn’t involve beds at all. Therefore, if you’re looking for bed bugs, you need to check the seams of chairs and couches, drawer joints, and areas with loose wallpaper too.
6. There Are Skin Flakes on Your Bed or Clothing
Skin flakes from bed bugs are small, oval, and brown, and are one of the major indicators of a bed bug infestation. If you find any of these small casings around your house, you’ve got bed bugs. Don’t be embarrassed though, as even the cleanest of homes can get infested with these annoying little critters.
7. You Recently Bought Secondhand Furniture Without Washing It

Getting a great deal on furniture is awesome, but secondhand furniture can bring unwanted pests such as bed bugs into your house. Therefore, you should thoroughly inspect any furniture that you’re thinking about bringing into your home.
8. There Are Brownish Red Stains on Your sheet That Smear When Wiped
As gross as it sounds, bed bugs can leave clusters of poop on sheets. If you find small stains that smear when wiped with a wet rag, it could be evidence of bed bug fecal matter. If you find this alongside mattress seams or box spring edges, you could have yourself a bed bug problem.
