Distinct' stomach cancer identified in younger patients

Many people under 60 who develop stomach cancer have a "genetically and clinically distinct" disease, new research has found.

Compared to stomach cancer in older adults, this new, early-onset form often grows and spreads more quickly, has a worse prognosis, and is more resistant to traditional chemotherapy treatments, said the study published in the journal Surgery.

While rates of stomach cancer in older patients have been declining for decades, this early onset of cancer is increasing and now makes up more than 30 per cent of stomach cancer diagnoses.

"I think this is an alarming trend, as stomach cancer is a devastating disease," said senior author Travis Grotz, a surgical oncologist at Mayo Clinic in the US.

The research team studied 75,225 cases using several cancer databases to review stomach cancer statistics from 1973 to 2015.

Today, the average age of someone diagnosed with stomach cancer is 68, but people in their 30s, 40s and 50s are more at risk than they used to be.

"Typically, we see stomach cancer being diagnosed in patients in their 70s, but increasingly we are seeing 30- to 50-year-old patients being diagnosed," Grotz said.

The increased rate of the early onset disease is not from earlier detection or screening, Grotz added.
"There is no universal screening for stomach cancer, and the younger patients actually presented with later-stage disease than the older patients," he said.

In addition to being more deadly, early onset stomach cancer is also genetically and molecularly distinct, researchers found.

Furthermore, traditional risk factors for developing stomach cancer among older people, such as smoking tobacco, did not appear to correlate with its early onset counterpart.

"Hopefully, studies like this will raise awareness and increase physician suspicion of stomach cancer, particularly in younger patients," Grotz said.

Younger patients who feel full before finishing a meal, or have reflux, abdominal pain, unintentional weight loss and difficulty eating should see their health care provider, he added.

Bride and groom, get these 4 medical tests done before the weddin

They're important

It is officially the wedding season. If you don’t already have a dozen of wedding invites and functions to attend, chances are you might be preparing for your own wedding. From finalising the wedding invite, the lehenga of your choice to zeroing in on the venue, planning a wedding is no child’s play.
A lot of people believe in checking the compatibility of the stars of the bride and groom to predict the state of their married life. However, there is one very crucial aspect of a happy and healthy relationship that often gets ignored--the health of the couple.

 4 Medical tests
So, before you decide to spend the rest of your life with someone, it is important to be aware of your partner’s medical status. As you gear up for the D-day, get these four medical tests done to be better equipped and prepared for any hurdles that may come your way.

Infertility test
An infertility test is designed to let you know the health of ovaries and the sperm count. Since there are no clear symptoms of infertility, it is important to undergo these tests if you are planning to have a baby in the future or even have a normal sex life. When you know the results beforehand, it helps you in seeking the correct course of treatment, if required.

Blood group compatibility test
It may not seem like a very important test but if you are planning to procreate, it is crucial that you and your partner have the same Rh factor (Rhesus factor). If your blood groups aren’t compatible with each other, it may create complications during pregnancy. An Rh incompatibility can be fatal for the second child as it is a condition where the antibodies in a pregnant woman's blood destroy her baby's blood cells.

Genetically transmitted conditions test
Genetic conditions can be easily transferred from one generation to the other. Hence, it is important to get tested for these chronic medical conditions before it gets too late. Some of the diseases include breast cancer, colon cancer, kidney diseases and diabetes. Timely diagnosis can also help in getting proper treatment for these medical conditions before they turn life-threatening.

STD test

Since it is common for people to indulge in premarital sex, it is a good idea for both the partners to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases. These diseases include HIV/AIDS, gonorrhoea, herpes, syphilis and hepatitis C. Since some of these medical conditions are life-threatening and can last lifelong, it is a must to get an STD test done.
In case your partner’s test reports turn out to be positive, it can save you from the psychological and psychological trauma that you may face in the future and give you clarity whether you wish to go ahead with the wedding or not.

This mobile game may help detect Alzheimer's risk

A specially designed smartphone game can detect people at the risk of developing Alzheimer's say researchers.

The game called Sea Hero Quest, downloaded and played over 4.3 million people worldwide, helped researchers better understand dementia by seeing how the brain works in relation to spatial navigation.

Dementia will affect 135 million people worldwide by 2050. We need to identify people to reduce their risk of developing dementia, said lead researcher.

As players made their way through mazes of islands and icebergs, the research team translated every 0.5 seconds of game-play into scientific data. The team studied how people who are genetically pre-disposed to Alzheimer's play the game compared with those who are not.

The results, showed people genetically at risk of developing Alzheimer's can be distinguished from those who are not on specific levels of the Sea Hero Quest game.

The findings are particularly important because a standard memory and thinking test cannot distinguish between the risk and non-risk groups. Our findings show we can reliably detect such subtle navigation changes in at-genetic-risk of Alzheimer's compared with healthy people without any symptoms or complaints, said the researcher.

The team studied gaming data taken from 27,108 UK players, aged 50-75 years and the most vulnerable age-group to develop Alzheimer's in the next decade. They compared this benchmark data with a smaller lab-based group of 60 people who underwent genetic testing.

8 Medical Conditions Often Misdiagnosed in Women

No one has ever called medicine an easy job, and there’s a reason why doctors spend a decade of their life merely preparing for their career. It’s one of the highest-pressure jobs, where people’s lives are quite literally in your hands. Often enough, it comes down to guesswork, as doctors don’t always have the tools to give a foolproof diagnosis, but missing the mark could potentially cause irreversible harm to the patient. This is why we should strive to make their jobs easier, by familiarizing ourselves with important symptoms and describing what we’re experiencing in the most accurate manner.

This is particularly true of conditions that are specific to women or that affect women at higher rates, as well as symptoms that are unique to women, as doctors are especially prone to misdiagnosis in these cases, and ruling a stroke or a heart attack out as a mild fever could very well mean death. If you feel like your doctor is giving you the wrong diagnosis, voice your concerns. If he or she do not budge, seek a second opinion.
Here are several conditions and their symptoms that you should definitely be aware of:
Stroke
Women's health: stroke

Strokes are among the leading causes of death and disability, and while you may be familiar with some of the general symptoms which may indicate an impending stroke, such as blurred eyesight in either or both eyes, numbness in one side of the body, garbled speech, problems comprehending speech and loss of balance and coordination, you may not be aware that there are other symptoms that are unique to women and are often misdiagnosed. Those include nausea, seizures, shortness of breath, painful and sudden hiccups, fainting and a general weakness.
Fibromyalgia
Women's health: fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a medical condition that affects 2-8% of the population, with women being affected at twice the rate as men. Typical symptoms include chronic pain, tiredness, sleep deprivation and forgetfulness. As many of the symptoms are rather non-specific and characteristic of other conditions, it is often misdiagnosed. One telltale sign of fibromyalgia are specific points that are more sensitive to pain than others. A combination of these tender points might reflect fibromyalgia affliction: elbows, knees, buttocks, shoulders, chest, neck and the base of the skull.
Lyme Disease
Women's health: Lyme disease
Lyme disease is a particularly harsh infection that’s transmitted by ticks and can cause facial paralysis, severe brain damage and impairment of motor capabilities if left untreated. The most common and recognizable sign of Lyme is a dark rash where the tick bit into the skin, surrounded by a secondary “halo” rash, giving the appearance of a bull’s eye. But the rash doesn’t always look that way, and as many as 30% of people who contact Lyme disease don’t have any rash at all. Other symptoms have been likened to flu: headaches, stiffness, fever and discomfort.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (or IBS) is a cause for much discomfort that can easily be confused with other conditions such as bowel inflammation, H. pylori infection, celiac and parasites.
IBS is characterized by bloating, lack of appetite, gas, and irregular stools (either diarrhea or constipation). Women are three times more likely to be affected by IBS, and many report that the symptoms are worsened by menstruation.
Depression
Even as our world is progressing towards equality, there is still a lot more progress to be made, as misogyny is still very real and haunts women wherever they go, even in the field of medicine. Many women who complain to a doctor about experiencing symptoms of depression are treated as if it’s a “mood swing” that will fade in time. Depression is a very serious mental condition that can have various catalysts and can manifest in different ways, such as listlessness, fatigue, inability to savor things that would regularly bring you joy, social withdrawal, self-doubt and rumination over your shortcomings and more.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a well-known condition that afflicts millions of women worldwide, yet for reasons unknown, doctors seem very hesitant to diagnose it. Endometriosis occurs when cells of the same type as the ovarian lining grow outside of the ovaries, it causes intense pelvic pain in many of the afflicted women. Around half of the afflicted women become infertile, with endometriosis being one of the leading causes of infertility. If all of this wasn’t bad enough, another common symptom is pain during intercourse. Although there is no cure for endometriosis, early diagnosis could help mitigate the symptoms, slow its progress and prevent infertility.
Lupus
Women's health: lupus
Lupus is an incurable, genetically-transmitted disease that shares many of its symptoms with other auto-immune diseases and conditions that afflict women at higher rates than men. Women are nine times more likely to contract lupus than men (though the prognosis tends to be worse for men afflicted). Lupus used to be considered a terminal disease, but these days, 90% of people living with lupus are able to live a full life. Because of the effective treatment, it is incredibly important to diagnose it in time. The most telltale sign of lupus is a rash over the nose and cheeks in a shape similar to a butterfly.
Heart Attack
Heart attack is one of the most vicious killers around, and though the most common and obvious sign of a heart attack is chest pain, there are many other signs that have nothing to do with the chest, and women who go through cardiac arrest report experiencing those at a higher rate than men. These symptoms include: dizziness, unusual fatigue, sweat, nausea, shortness of breath and pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, back, and either of the shoulders or arms.

Top five cancer-causing foods you might be consuming everyday

What if your staple diet contains carcinogens, but you keep consuming them daily without realising it? Perhaps, the consequences of daily consumption of these foods can be deadly as it can deplete your body’s natural defense mechanism against foreign particles.

While millions of people are being diagnosed with some type of cancer every year, it’s time we took note of our lifestyles, including eating habits, to avoid falling victim to this dreaded disease. A number of studies have linked certain foods to cancer in addition to other health problems such as heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Here is a list of foods that you probably consume every day without realising that they may contain cancer-causing chemicals:

Canned foods
You may have to avoid this category because most canned goods, such as canned tomatoes, are lined with a chemical called bisphenol-A (BPA), which has been shown to genetically alter the brain cells of rats, and may cause cancer in people. Tomatoes being highly acidic are exceptionally dangerous and can cause BPA to leech from the lining of the can into the tomatoes themselves.

Potato chips

You might love the taste of crunchy potato chips, but they are high in fat and calories, both of which contribute to unintended weight gain. Potato chips and French fries also contain higher levels of acrylamide - a known carcinogen that is found in cigarettes - compared with other foods.

Processed and red meats

The World Health Organisation (WHO) classified processed meat as Group 1, carcinogenic to humans and red meat as Group 2A, probably carcinogenic to humans.

It said that in the case of processed meat, the classification is based on sufficient evidence from epidemiological studies that eating processed meat causes colorectal cancer. Whereas, in the case of red meat, the classification is based on limited evidence from epidemiological studies showing positive associations between eating red meat and developing colorectal cancer as well as strong mechanistic evidence.

All mammalian muscle meat, including, beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horse, and goat are classified as red meat. Processed meats include hot dogs, sausages, bacon, and most lunch meats.

Microwave popcorn

Microwave popcorn contains chemicals that can increase your risk of cancer. The culprit here isn’t the popcorn itself, but it is the chemically-lined bag. Microwave popcorn bags are lined with a chemical known as perfluoro-octanoic acid (or PFOA) that has been linked to an increased risk of liver, bladder, kidney, and testicular cancer in humans. In addition, a study from the University of California linked this toxin to infertility in women.

Hydrogenated oils

Hydrogenated oils, also known as trans fats, are linked to heart disease, immune system deficiency, and cancer. These are vegetable oils that have been processed by creating a chemical reaction with hydrogen - to increase the shelf life of the oil. Margarine is an example of complete hydrogenation. Replacing hydrogenated oils with olive oil, coconut, or grapeseed oil in your diet is a great way to help you live a healthier, happier life.

This plant can clean indoor air

Researchers have genetically modified a common indoor plant -- pothos ivy -- to remove pollutants inside the house including chloroform and benzene that have been linked to cancer, according to a new study.

The modified plants express a protein, called P450 2E1 or 2E1, that transforms these compounds into molecules that the plants can then use to support their own growth.

"People have not really been talking about these hazardous organic compounds in homes, and I think that is because we could not do anything about them," said a Prof.

For the study, the team tested how well their modified plants could remove the pollutants from air compared to normal pothos ivy.

They put both types of plants in glass tubes and then added either benzene or chloroform gas into each tube. Over 11 days, they tracked how the concentration of each pollutant changed in each tube.

Findings showed that for the unmodified plants, the concentration of either gas did not change over time.

However, for the modified plants, the concentration of chloroform dropped by 82 per cent after three days, and it was almost undetectable by day six.

In addition, the concentration of benzene also decreased in the modified plant vials by about 75 per cent.

"If you had a plant growing in the corner of a room, it will have some effect in that room. But without air flow, it will take a long time for a molecule on the other end of the house to reach the plant," the Prof. noted.
