The Benefits and Uses of Neem, the "Wonder Leaf"

Neem is a very unique tree and neem leaves are the most complex leaves on the planet. The neem tree has over 130 different biologically active compounds, and the neem leaf is one of the most complex leaves you can find on the planet.

The Benefits and Uses of Neem, the "Wonder Leaf"

#1 Anti-cancer benefits of neem

Consuming neem every day keeps the number of cancerous cells within a certain limit
Neem has many incredible medicinal benefits, but one of the most important things is, it kills cancerous cells. Everyone has cancerous cells in their body, but normally, they are disorganized. However, if you create certain situations in the body, they will get organized. As long as these cells are loafing around by themselves, it is not an issue. If they all gather in one place and hit it off, it becomes a problem. This is like a shift from petty crime to organized crime. It is a serious problem. If you consume neem every day, it keeps the number of cancerous cells in the body within a certain limit, so that they will not gang up against your system.

#2 Anti-bacterial benefits of neem

The world is full of bacteria. So is the body. There are more microorganisms living in you than you can imagine. Most of these bacteria are helpful. Without them, you would not be able to digest anything. In fact, you cannot exist without them. But some bacteria can cause you trouble. Your body constantly spends energy to manage these bacteria. If excess levels of bacteria occur, you will feel "down" because your defense mechanism has to spend too much energy to fight them. By using neem internally and externally, you can manage these bacteria in such a way that they will not overgrow, and your body will not have to spend too much energy in fighting them. If you consume a certain amount of neem on a daily basis, it will destroy the troublesome bacteria in the intestinal region, and your colon will generally remain clean and free of infection.

By using neem internally and externally, you can manage bacteria so that they will not overgrow
Also, if there is a slight smell in certain areas of the body, it means bacteria are a little more active there. Almost everyone has some minor skin issues but if you wash your body with neem, it becomes clean and radiant. If you rub your body with neem paste before having a bath, let it dry for some time, and then wash it off with water, it will act as a good antibacterial cleanser. Alternatively, you can soak a few neem leaves in water overnight and bathe with this water in the morning.

#3 Benefits of neem for yogic sadhana

Above all, neem generates heat in the body. This generation of heat is supportive for generating intense forms of energy within the system. Different qualities can be predominant in the body – two of these are sheeta and ushna, in traditional terms. The closest word for “sheeta” in English is “cold,” but that is not exactly what it is. If your system moves towards sheeta, the mucus levels in the body will go up. Excess mucus in the system is linked to a variety of conditions, from the common cold and sinusitis to many other issues.

Neem generates heat in the body. This is supportive for generating intense forms of energy
For a hatha yogi, neem is particularly important because it keeps the body slightly oriented towards ushna. Ushna means you have some extra "fuel". For a sadhaka who explores unknown terrain, it is safer to carry an extra can of fuel, just in case your system needs that extra power. You want to keep the fire slightly higher than generally needed. If the body is in a condition of sheeta, you will not be capable of too much activity. But if you keep your body slightly on the ushna side, even if you travel, eat outside, or are exposed to whatever else, this extra fire in you will burn and handle these external influences. Neem is a big support in that direction.

Things to keep in mind

One thing to keep in mind is, when consumed in excess, neem will kill sperm cells. In the first four to five months of pregnancy, when the fetus is developing, pregnant women should not have neem. Neem does not cause any damage to the ovaries but it causes excess heat. When a woman has just conceived and there is too much heat in the body, she may lose the fetus. If a woman is planning to conceive, she should not consume neem because there will be excess heat, and the system will treat the baby like a foreign body.

If a woman is planning to conceive, she should not consume neem because there will be excess heat
If heat increases, certain changes will happen in the system – women will notice this more than men. In case this affects the normal process of the body, we bring the heat down to some extent, but we generally do not want to give up neem because for people who do sadhana, some amount of heat in the system is needed. Once they begin to have neem on a daily basis, some women may find that their menstrual cycles become shorter. In that case, just drink more water. If having more water alone is not sufficient to reduce the heat, add a piece of lemon or the juice of half a lemon to the water. If that is still not enough, have a glass of ash gourd juice, which is very cooling. Another option is castor oil. If you put some of it into your navel, at your anahata, at the pit of the throat, and behind the ears, it will instantly cool the system.

Scientists find new target for Parkinson’s disease

Contrary to earlier discovery that a chemical found in a synthetic opioid, MPTP, induced a form of Parkinson’s disease, a new study has found that it is an enzyme in the body that can metabolise compounds formed in the brain from alkaloids causing a neurodegenerative condition in mice.

The study led by Narayan Avadhani and Mrittika Chattopadhyay, suggested that the enzyme, mitochondrial CYP2D6, presents a potentially powerful new target for Parkinson’s treatment. “Over the past two or three decades, researchers have tried inhibiting the process by they believed MPTP was metabolised, with mixed success,” said Avadhani.

“We believe that mitochondrial CYP2D6 is the more direct drug target, which might prove better in treating idiopathic Parkinson’s disease,” added Avadhani. The study published in the ‘Journal of Biological Chemistry’ investigated the mechanism of Parkinson’s disease when a specific cause cannot be pinpointed. Previous studies have shown that MPTP and similar toxic compounds induce Parkinson’s disease in rodents and primates.

The mechanism of action, as scientists understood it, involved the compounds being oxidised to form MPP+, a toxic metabolite. The enzyme that was believed to be responsible is called monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B), present in the nervous system’s glial cells. In that conception of the mechanism, MPP+ was thought to then be transferred to dopamine neurons by dopamine transporter proteins, and, indeed, Parkinson’s is characterised by unusually low dopamine levels in the brain.

Researchers have tried to stem the effects of Parkinson’s by targeting two players in this presumed pathway, both MAO-B and the dopamine transporter protein, with only mixed success. In earlier work, Avadhani and colleagues had shown that the enzyme CYP2D6, localised to the body’s energy factories, the mitochondria, could play a role in metabolising MPTP to MPP+.

In the new investigation, they took a closer look at beta-carbolines and isoquinolines, toxins that resemble MPTP which the body produces from substances found in tobacco smoke, alcohol, and some foods. They found that, instead of MAO-B, it was mitochondrial CYP2D6 that activate the beta-carbolines and isoquinolines inside the dopamine-producing neurons, rather than the glial cells.

This route of activation, in a mouse model, results in neuronal damage and oxidative stress, symptoms akin to Parkinson’s. “CYP2D6 is known to play a role in influencing the activity of a number of drugs,” said Avadhani. In an attempt to target this pathway, the researchers showed that mice lacking CYP2D6 did not exhibit severe symptoms than mice with the protein did. In addition, an inhibitor of CYP2D6 prevented neuronal damage in the mice.

“The CYP2D6 inhibitor ajmalicine is a member of the reserpine family of alkaloids, found in the plant Rauwolfia serpentine and was long used in India for treating mental illness, such as paranoia and schizophrenia,” said Avadhani. “Mitochondrial targeting of such compounds is likely to be effective in treating Parkinson’s patients, and pursuing that is our future strategy,” said Avadhani.

Researchers test novel approach for injecting gene therapy vectors into kidney

A mouse-experiment conducted by the researchers to better understand the ways to treat renal diseases has identified that before gene therapy is implemented to treat, targeted delivery of the therapeutic genes to the kidney should be the 1st necessary step.

In a novel approach devised by a group of scientists, 3 different gene delivery vectors were injected intravenously and directly into the kidneys of mice.

As the kidney filters out large compounds from the bloodstream, the researchers chose to study the ability to deliver 3 different sized vectors via an intravenous route: small adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors (25mm), larger adenovirus vectors (100mm) and lentiviral vectors (120mm).

To bypass this filtering mechanism, they also tested 2 different direct injection routed into the kidney and found these to be superior to intravenous injections.

However, some of the vectors were able to leak out of the kidney, creating the possibility for off-target tissue effects.

The potential for direct injections opens new possibilities for treating kidney diseases with gene therapy, but additional improvements are needed.

The great burden of kidney diseases in the U.S. and Europe has yet to be impacted by gene therapy, said one of the researchers.

The researchers have performed an important head-to-head comparison of currently available gene therapy technology, to identify which may best be used to address this important group of diseases.

New method found to inhibit Parkinson’s disease

Contrary to earlier discovery that a chemical found in a synthetic opioid, MPTP, induced a form of Parkinson's disease, a new study has found that it is an enzyme in the body that can metabolise compounds formed in the brain from alkaloids causing a neurodegenerative condition in mice.

A 'super' house plant that can remove air pollutants from your home

Houseplants do more than just add natural beauty to your abode. They also help clean the air.

Now, researchers  have improved the air-cleaning properties of one common household plant, the pothos ivy.

The team genetically modified pothos ivy to not only remove carcinogens such as chloroform and benzene from the air, but to synthesize a protein, called 2E1, that transforms these harmful compounds into molecules the plants use for their own growth.

The researchers chose pothos ivy as the plant for modification because it grows well indoors in a variety of conditions.

The scientists added benzene or chloroform gas to modified and non-modified plants in glass tubes. Over 11 days, they collected data on how each pollutant's concentration changed.

According to the study, the unmodified plants didn't affect the concentration of either gas much. But the modified plants changed the concentration of chloroform dramatically inside the tube, making it drop by 82 percent just after three days. By the sixth day, it was almost completely undetectable.

The concentration of benzene also decreased thanks to the modified plants. By day eight, it dropped by an impressive 75 percent.

"People haven't really been talking about these hazardous organic compounds in homes, and I think that's because we couldn't do anything about them," study author in a statement. "Now we've engineered houseplants to remove these pollutants for us."

The research team plans to add a protein to pothos plants that can break down another hazardous pollutant inside some homes: formaldehyde. This harmful compound is often found in wood flooring and cabinets.

Super drug' for pediatric blood cancer may soon be reality

A "super drug" that helps slow down the progression of blood cancer in children could soon become a reality, say researchers.

Patients with leukemia have a very low percentage of red blood cells, making them anemic, and have approximately 80 times more white blood cells than people without cancer.

However, the survival rate is only 30 per cent for children diagnosed with MLL-translocation leukemia, a cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow.

"These white blood cells infiltrate many of the tissues and organs of the affected individuals and is a major cause of death in leukemia patients," said a scientist.

"This is a monster cancer that we've been dealing with for many years in children.

"We're finally at a point where in five to 10 years, we can get a drug in kids that can be effective. If we can bring that survival rate up to 85 per cent, that's a major accomplishment," he said.

In the study, the team demonstrated that when a key protein responsible for leukemia, MLL, is stabilised, it slows the progression of the leukemia.

This MLL stabilisation process could potentially work in cancers with solid tumours, such as breast or prostate cancer.

The next step will be to combine the treatments from the past two years of research into a pediatric leukemia "super drug" to test on humans in a clinical trial, the researchers said.

"This opens up a new therapeutic approach not only for leukemia, which is so important for the many children who are diagnosed with this terrible cancer, but also for other types of cancers that plague the population," the study showed.

The team also identified compounds that could slow cancer growth by interrupting a gene transcription process known as "Super Elongation Complex " (SEC).
