Carcinogen Found in US Sunscreens - Should You Be Worried?

A private scientific investigation of hundreds of sunscreens and after-sun care products by the American virtual pharmacy called Valisure found that over a quarter of the samples they tested were contaminated by benzene, a known human carcinogen. The study finds benzene in 78 sunscreens. 
The survey tested 294 individual samples of sunscreens and after-sun products by 69 brands. Benzene, a known carcinogen, was found in 78 of the samples, with 14 products (mostly spray sunscreens) exceeding the regulated amount of the carcinogen. What is benzene and how did it get into the sun care products?  
Benzene is an organic solvent, a type of substance used in the preparation of drugs or the cleaning of equipment in the pharmaceutical industry. Some of these solvents, including benzene, have a volatile nature and pose a danger for human health in higher-than-regulated concentrations. For benzene, this concentration is >2 parts per million (ppm). Studies in factory workers show that inhalation, ingestion, and skin or eye contact with benzene could be dangerous for one’s long-term health. 
 
According to the ICH, a European medical agency that helps control pharmaceuticals, “Since there is no therapeutic benefit from residual solvents, all residual solvents should be removed to the extent possible to meet product specifications, good manufacturing practices, or other quality-based requirements.” 
 
But sometimes, these solvents are not completely removed in the manufacturing process, and they end up in products. This is exactly what we see in some of the sunscreens and after sun products, some of which are manufactured by reputable brands like Neutrogena, EltaMD, and Banana Boat. Valisure, the company that initiated the study, filed a petition for the recall of the sunscreens that contained high concentrations of benzene.

Should you be concerned?  
While the FDA’s response to these findings is pending, the issue attracted a lot of public attention and speculation. Even though the allegations against these specific sun care products are concerning, it’s important to understand that benzene isn’t only present in sunscreens. In fact, the same online pharmacy found benzene in hand sanitizers.

Even more importantly, though, these findings should not deter you from using sunscreen. As the company’s own news release pointed out, “It is important to note that not all sunscreen products contain benzene and that uncontaminated products are available, should continue to be used, and are important for protecting against potentially harmful solar radiation.” 
 
Let’s not forget that these harmful effects include skin cancer, the most common type of cancer in the United States. As Dr. Adam Friedman, a board-certified dermatologist pointed out in a statement, “It only takes one blistering sunburn during childhood or adolescence to nearly double a person’s chance of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, later in life.” 
 
The bottom line is, don’t let these findings discourage you from wearing any of the numerous safe sunscreens and protecting your skin from cancer-causing UV rays.

How To Tell If a Mattress Contains Toxic Chemicals

There is a lot to consider when buying a new mattress. Comfort, firmness level, size, and price are all important of course, but there is one factor many people forget or aren’t even aware of, and those are toxins. Considering your mattress is the item you spend the most amount of time in close proximity to on an average day, the last thing you want is for your mattress to be toxic. 
 
Yes, many mattresses are actually made with chemical components that could be harmful to your health. In this article, we’ll explain in detail what dangerous components can be found in a mattress and what to look out for to make sure your mattress is safe. 
 
What is off-gassing and why is it problematic? 
Have you ever bought a new mattress, and as you were unwrapping it from the plastic sheets you felt a strange odor in the air? That was probably off-gassing. Most mattresses contain polyurethane foam, a material that is made from petroleum chemicals. This foam can off-gas- or emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which have been linked to respiratory irritation and nervous system harm.
Off-gassing occurs when the VOCs are released into the open air and come in contact with oxygenated air. Most people believe that the off-gassing lasts only as long as the odor lingers in the room, but unfortunately that's not true. While the initial unpleasant smell usually disperses briefly after opening the new mattress from its packaging, the effects linger for several years, depending on the precise chemicals present in the mattress. 
 
As we mentioned, these chemicals can cause a wide range of symptoms, including eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, and even nausea and vomiting. In some cases, they can even cause severe and lasting health issues.

Chemicals to watch out for in mattresses 
 
Formaldehyde - A preservative that is often used as an adhesive that holds the mattress layers together. According to the EPA Formaldehyde could increase the risk for coughing and wheezing.
 
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) - These chemicals are commonly used as fire retardants. PBDEs have been banned for use in several states including California, New York, and Maryland as well as in the European Union. However, many older mattresses still contain these harmful ingredients, which have been associated with hyperactivity, low birth weight, and developmental delays in children, according to the Green Science Policy Institute.

Boric acid - Commonly used by mattress manufacturers to make the mattress resistant to bed bugs and bacteria. It’s been confirmed that long-term exposure to boric acid could have devastating effects, including neurological and developmental problems, convulsions, skin blistering, and damage to the upper respiratory tract. 
 
Benzene - As we pointed out, many mattresses contain petroleum chemicals, the most common being benzine, which was identified by the World Health Organization as a carcinogen. 
 
Diisocyanates - Used to make foam in mattresses more flexible diisocyanates have fallen under scrutiny by the EPA for causing potential harm. They have been linked to a variety of conditions, including causing asthma and irritating the eyes, lungs, and skin.

How to tell if a mattress is toxic 
Many mattresses will include warnings about the presence of carcinogens or chemicals that can cause reproductive harm, but unfortunately, not all manufacturers will reveal all the important information you need to know. Even if a company claims that their mattresses are safe, green, and healthy, it’s important to dig a little deeper than the advertisement to make sure the product you’re purchasing is safe.

One way to find out if a mattress is 100% organic is to check if it has an Oeko-Tex certification and a GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification. Tex Standard 100 ensures that there are no harmful chemicals in your mattress, and GOTS is a certification for the outside covering, letting you know that the cotton cover is certified organic. 
 
In general, it is always recommended to purchase from a company that is transparent about the materials they use. Choosing a non-toxic mattress will not only benefit you but also ensures that these toxic chemicals won't end up in the environment, putting people and wildlife at risk when they are discarded. Needless to say, that it will also contribute greatly to the quality of the air in your home and the well-being of your family!

A 'super' house plant that can remove air pollutants from your home

Houseplants do more than just add natural beauty to your abode. They also help clean the air.

Now, researchers  have improved the air-cleaning properties of one common household plant, the pothos ivy. 

The team genetically modified pothos ivy to not only remove carcinogens such as chloroform and benzene from the air, but to synthesize a protein, called 2E1, that transforms these harmful compounds into molecules the plants use for their own growth.  

The researchers chose pothos ivy as the plant for modification because it grows well indoors in a variety of conditions. 

The scientists added benzene or chloroform gas to modified and non-modified plants in glass tubes. Over 11 days, they collected data on how each pollutant's concentration changed.  

According to the study, the unmodified plants didn't affect the concentration of either gas much. But the modified plants changed the concentration of chloroform dramatically inside the tube, making it drop by 82 percent just after three days. By the sixth day, it was almost completely undetectable. 

The concentration of benzene also decreased thanks to the modified plants. By day eight, it dropped by an impressive 75 percent.

"People haven't really been talking about these hazardous organic compounds in homes, and I think that's because we couldn't do anything about them," study author in a statement. "Now we've engineered houseplants to remove these pollutants for us."  

The research team plans to add a protein to pothos plants that can break down another hazardous pollutant inside some homes: formaldehyde. This harmful compound is often found in wood flooring and cabinets.

Now, plants to remove cancer-causing pollutants from homes

Scientists have genetically modified a common houseplant to remove cancer-causing pollutants from our homes.

While a variety of air filters in our homes can keep allergens and dust particles at bay, some hazardous compounds are too small to be trapped in these filters.


Small molecules like chloroform, which is present in small amounts in chlorinated water, or benzene, which is a component of gasoline, build up in our homes when we shower or boil water, or when we store cars or lawn mowers in attached garages.

Both benzene and chloroform exposure have been linked to cancer.
 
Researchers  have genetically modified a common houseplant pothos ivy to remove chloroform and benzene from the air around it.

The modified plants express a protein, called 2E1, that transforms these compounds into molecules that the plants can then use to support their own growth, according to the study.

"People haven't really been talking about these hazardous organic compounds in homes, and I think that's because we couldn't do anything about them," said  a research professor.

"Now we've engineered houseplants to remove these pollutants for us," said the Prof.

The team decided to use a protein called cytochrome P450 2E1, or 2E1 for short, which is present in all mammals, including humans.

In our bodies, 2E1 turns benzene into a chemical called phenol and chloroform into carbon dioxide and chloride ions.

However, 2E1 is located in our livers and is turned on when we drink alcohol.

So it's not available to help us process pollutants in our air.

"We decided we should have this reaction occur outside of the body in a plant, an example of the 'green liver' concept," the Prof. said.

"And 2E1 can be beneficial for the plant, too. Plants use carbon dioxide and chloride ions to make their food, and they use phenol to help make components of their cell walls," he added.

The researchers made a synthetic version of the gene that serves as instructions for making the rabbit form of 2E1.

Then they introduced it into pothos ivy so that each cell in the plant expressed the protein.

Pothos ivy does not flower in temperate climates so the genetically modified plants won't be able to spread via pollen.

Plants in the home would also need to be inside an enclosure with something to move air past their leaves, like a fan, the Prof. said.

The team is currently working to increase the plants' capabilities by adding a protein that can break down another hazardous molecule found in home air: formaldehyde, which is present in some wood products, such as laminate flooring and cabinets, and tobacco smoke.
