High Fat Diet With Antibiotic Use May Result In Gut Inflammation

It has been emphasised time and again that your diet plays a key role in managing the health of your gut. Gut, for the uninitiated, is a micro biome of a certain bacteria present in our body that tend to impact our overall health. Gut micro biome comprises of both 'good' and 'bad' bacteria. According to experts a healthy diet filled with pre and probiotics could help feed good bacteria.

According to a recent study, a high fat western diet in combination with antibiotics may become a pre-irritable bowel syndrome (IBD) risk factor.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common digestive disorder that affects over 11% of people worldwide. Some of the symptoms include recurring episodes of abdominal pain, bloating and changes in bowel habits. IBS patients with mucosal inflammation and changes in the gut's microbial composition are considered pre-IBD.

The study included 43 healthy adults and 49 adult patients diagnosed with IBS. The researchers measured faecal calprotectin, a biomarker for intestinal inflammation, of participants. Elevated levels of faecal calprotectin indicated a pre-IBD condition. The study identified 19 patients with IBS as pre-IBD.

In the course of the study, researchers found that participants who consumed a high-fat diet and used antibiotics were at 8.6 times higher risk for having pre-IBD than those on a low-fat diet and no recent history of antibiotic use. Moreover, participants with the highest fat consumption were found to be about 2.8 times more likely to have pre-IBD as compared to those with the lowest fat intake.

"Our study found that a history of antibiotics in individuals consuming a high-fat diet was associated with the greatest risk for pre-IBD," said Andreas Baumler, professor of medical microbiology and immunology and lead author on the study. "Until now, we didn't appreciate how different environmental risk factors can synergise to drive the disease."

Shutting the cell's powerhouse promotes gut microbial growth. The researchers used mouse models to draw conclusions for the study that also tested the effect of high-fat diet and antibiotics use on the cells in the intestinal lining.

The combination of both tend to disrupt the work of the cell's mitochondria, shutting its ability to burn oxygen. This disruption results in a reduction in the cell's oxygen consumption and leads to oxygen leakage into the gut, and lead to inflammation.

"The best approach to a healthy gut is to get rid of the preferred sustenance of harmful microbes," Lee said. "Our study emphasised the importance of avoiding high-fat food and abuse of antibiotics to avoid gut inflammation."

A cardiologist is begging patients to avoid the high-fat keto diet because their cholesterol levels could skyrocket

The cardiologist Elizabeth Klodas says food can be like medicine for what ails us — and in some cases may replace drugs.

In her practice, she sometimes uses fiber-rich, cholesterol-lowering foods to help her patients get healthier without extra drugs.

But she says that going keto with lots of saturated fats can be dangerous and that patient "cholesterols can just go crazy" on the plan.

The high-fat, low-carb keto diet has been around for 100 years as a therapeutic treatment for epileptic seizures, but it's recently gained favor with celebrities and heath enthusiasts alike as a foolproof way to lose weight. The idea with keto is to shift the body into a state of fat-burning ketosis, by banishing nearly all carbs (no sweet apples or bread allowed) and fueling up on 70% to 80% fat every day.

It's been tried by Hollywood stars including the Kardashians and Halle Berry, while Silicon Valley tech workers swear by its ability to lift their mental fog. Doctors are also starting to believe the plan holds promise for staving off diabetes. There's even evidence to suggest it could one day help some drugs better combat cancer.

Health experts are still cautious about recommending the plan across the board, however, not only because it's difficult to follow but more importantly because there isn't much long-term data about what it may do to heart health after years or decades of use. Cardiologists and kidney doctors are already expressing serious concerns about what they're seeing in practice when certain patients go high-fat.

Going low-carb can be bad for your heart
The cardiologist Elizabeth Klodas says not all of her patients have done well on the trendy plan.

"Stop. Stop!" she told Insider. "In my own practice, the people that have adopted it, their cholesterols can just go crazy."

She's not the only heart doctor to have pointed this out.

Ethan Weiss, a cardiologist who himself has become an ardent follower of a high-fat keto diet plan, says that while high cholesterol isn't a common issue with keto, it can happen.

"I think the vast majority of people who go on this diet will have no trouble with their cholesterol," Weiss told Business Insider last year. "But I'm not going to tell the people that do have trouble with their cholesterol that it's not a problem."

He sometimes suggests a high-fat keto plan to his patients working to manage diabetes, obesity, and other metabolic issues. But he's cautious about how and when he prescribes it, recommending what he calls a "heart healthy" keto, with lots of fatty fish, olive oil, nuts, and avocado in the mix.

Klodas said those were all healthful additions to any diet that she would endorse to her patients, too.

"It's not about high-fat, low-fat — it's good fat, bad fat," she said. "The oils in nuts and seeds, oils in fish, avocados, you don't have to worry about those. Those appear to be anti-inflammatory — they help cholesterol."

But evidence suggests people tend to fuel up on bacon, cream, and coconut oil when going keto instead of favoring unsaturated, healthy fats.

Perhaps this is why studies show that people who follow low-carb diets tend to have a higher risk of death and, in particular, tend to die from coronary heart disease far more often than people who eat more carbohydrates. (Not everyone who goes low-carb will restrict their carb intake enough to enter fat-burning ketosis, however.)

Whether your diet is low-carb or high-carb, make sure you're eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and nuts

A keto diet prioritizes fatty foods like olive oil, alongside meats, cheese, eggs, and produce, as long as it's not too high-carb.

Klodas also doesn't buy into the idea that going low-carb, while shunning the fruits, vegetables, beans, and grains that we know are linked to positive health outcomes, is a good idea.

"If you look at populations that eat a keto-type diet, the Inuit, for example, very few fruits and vegetables, right? Their average life span is 10 years shorter," Klodas said. "None of these Blue Zones where people live long, well ... none of them follow a keto diet."

Klodas said the secret to better health lay in cooking more for yourself and incorporating more produce, like fruits, vegetables, and beans, into what you eat. These can be high-carb but also promote overall health.

Instead of overhauling people's diets, which is difficult to sustain in the long term, Klodas has asked many of her patients to shift their eating routines through small, incremental changes. She started a line of packaged "Step One Foods" six years ago, which all include lots of fiber, alpha-linolenic acid, and plant sterols to help lower cholesterol.

The idea is that patients might make two simple "swaps" to their diet a day, switching out an afternoon candy bar or a breakfast pastry with something from her line like a serving of oatmeal or a smoothie.

At an American Heart Association scientific session in 2018, Klodas presented academic research conducted (in conjunction with the Mayo Clinic and University of Manitoba) on 54 patients, which suggested that her swaps really worked. They appeared to help people reduce their cholesterol by about 5% in a monthlong trial, without any additional drugs.

She sees her program as one small way to start people down a path to choosing more healthful foods, lowering their overall cholesterol without the potential for some of the mind-altering side effects that statins can have.

"What I see are deficiencies of fiber, antioxidants, healthy fats," she said. "That's the thing that's really missing in people's lives."

Pregnant? A diet with ghee & butter can protect your baby from Alzheimer’s disease

To all the moms to be, here’s some advice: don’t avoid ghee!

The advice given by our elders, especially by our grandparents is not worthless. Rather, it is backed by logic. We all must have seen our grannies suggesting high-fat diets to the pregnant women in the house. Well, scientists have found out the reason behind this.

A study has revealed that a high-fat diet during gestation guards the fetus against changes in the brain that may lead to Alzheimer’s disease later. See how smart our grannies are? Kudos to them!

But before we proceed further, let’s find out what Alzheimer’s exactly is?
Simply put, it’s a form of dementia which ultimately leads to memory loss and other cognitive abilities. The most common symptoms are memory loss, inability to learn new things, problem in writing, reading, calculating, restlessness, anger, depression, hallucination, and inability to combine muscle movements. And there is no cure.

Although the risk of this disease comes in old age, there is no harm in preventive care.

Yes, at an old age this situation can be terrifying. But let’s see what experts have found out.
Recently a study was published and we quote, “In humans, it has been known that individuals whose mothers develop Alzheimer’s disease after the age of 65 are at increased risk of also developing the disease around the same age,” said senior investigator.

Genetic factors transmitted by mothers to their offspring seem like an obvious explanation behind this phenomenon, but so far no genes have been identified that could explain the maternal transmission of Alzheimer’s disease.

To better understand the unique relationship between maternal Alzheimer’s disease and risk in her offspring, researchers looked at maternal fat intake specifically during the gestation period in mice engineered to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Pregnant mice were fed a high-fat diet from the beginning until the end of gestation. The moment offspring were born, mothers were switched to a regular diet, which was maintained during the lactation period. Offspring of these mothers were always kept at the same regular or standard diet throughout their life.

At 11 months of age, offspring underwent behavioural tests to assess learning ability and memory. “Surprisingly, we’ve found that animals from mothers fed a high-fat diet during gestation had better learning and memory skills than their counterparts born to mothers fed a regular diet during gestation,” the Dr. said.

The observed improvements in memory and learning were associated with the maintenance of good synaptic integrity. In fact, offspring from mothers exposed to a high-fat diet had significant improvement of synapse function when compared with offspring from mothers on a regular diet.

Synapses, the places where neurons come together to relay information, play a vital role in learning and memory formation.

If expecting, then don’t hesitate the high-fat intake as it’s not just good for you but for your kid as well.

Obesity can weaken response to taste

Obesity is linked to a reduced response to taste, reveals a recent study.

According to the study,' taste perception is known to change with obesity, but the underlying neural changes remain poorly understood.

"It is surprising that we know so little about how taste is affected by obesity, given that the taste of food is a big factor in determining what we choose to eat," said a professor of psychology.

To address this issue, a team of researchers aimed to detail the effects of obesity on responses to taste stimuli in the nucleus tractus solitarius, a part of the brain involved with taste processing.

The researchers recorded the responses to taste stimuli from single cells in the brainstem of rats that were made obese by feeding a high-fat diet.

They found that taste responses in these obese rats were smaller in magnitude, shorter in duration and took longer to develop, compared with those in lean rats.

The results suggested that a high-fat diet produces blunted, but more prevalent, responses to taste in the brain and a weakened association of taste responses with ingestive behaviour.

While the researcher stressed that these findings currently only apply to rats, she said that this same process could possibly translate to humans.

"Others have found that the number of taste buds on the tongue is diminished in obese mice and humans, so the likelihood that taste response in the human brain is also blunted is good," said the researcher.

11 Natural Foods Reverse Diabetes

It was heartbreaking for me to see many diabetics  who have such a sweet tooth, crave sweets but not be able to eat them at all. The artificial sweeteners are often cancer causing and at times even more harmful than white sugar. That’s when I found that there is a way to reverse diabetes naturally and enjoy sweets once in a while without having blood sugar rise and fall drastically.

Freedom from Diabetes

That’s when the author got in touch with Dr. Pramod Tripathi of the Freedom from Diabetes program. Dr. Tripathi has helped naturally reverse diabetes with his program for thousands of people. By 2017, 5000 of his patients were completely off diabetes tablets and 1000 patients were off insulin shots. That is a commendable number for people who have been able to stop diabetes medication just through natural foods and changes in their lifestyle.

3 Mistakes All Type II Diabetes Patients Make

Dr. Pramod Tripathi has done a lot of research on diabetes and its causes. He has also studied research and theories about diabetes from across the world. He says there are three mistakes all diabetes patients make.
  • Eat Foods that cause high acidity
  • Eat foods that have high fat
  • Eat food that lacks micro nutrients, that is, essential Vitamins and Minerals
According to his research on diabetes, high fat around the muscle, acidity and lack of micro-nutrients prevent insulin from doing its work properly and sugar to get absorbed in our muscles. He also said hormones like IGF in Milk and dairy products attached to the muscle and blocks insulin from doing its job.
Dr. Pramod Tripathi gave us a few simple to tips to follow that will help diabetics reverse their diabetes naturally and stabilize their blood sugar completely.

11 Rules Freedom from Diabetes

Here are 11 simple food rules to follow which will help you stabilize your blood sugar. These rules are not just for people who have high or low blood sugar. Everyone can follow these tips to maintain general health and fitness.

1. Why Almond Milk & Coconut Milk are better than Cow’s Milk
Cow’s Milk and dairy products like paneer, ghee, dahi, buttermilk and such should be stopped immediately and completely. The reason is that dairy contains IGF which resembles insulin, blocks insulin by attaching itself to the muscle tissue and prevents it from stabilizing blood sugar. I’ve experienced this myself. Just to test the concept I stopped dairy suddenly and completely in a day, and immediately my after-meal blood sugar dropped to 100 with no other change in my diet. Other than this, milk we buy often has a lot of growth hormones and other artificially injected hormones in the cow, making the dairy more harmful than beneficial to us.

If you must have it, reduce the your dairy intake to once or twice in a week and go for grass-fed, hormone free desi cow’s milk. Coconut milk and almond milk are good replacements to have you can also make cashew cheese and cashew curd.

2. Choose Dals, Beans and Sprouts over eggs, meat & fish
Animal proteins like eggs, meat and fish cause acidity and therefore inflammation in the body. In the long term, this acidity and inflammation prevents insulin from doing its job of stabilizing blood sugar. Reduce animal protein considerably if you can’t cut it down completely.

Lentils, pulses and sprouts are a great source of vegetarian protein. You will find these vegan protein Indian dishes a delicious addition to your daily menu. They are full of vitamins and minerals and do not cause as much acidity as animal protein. Animal protein is also often loaded with artificially injected growth hormones that are harmful to us.

 3. Start eating Salad & Raw Greens
Raw greens and salads are loaded with micro-nutrients that are otherwise lacking in our diet. The addition of fiber from raw food also improves digestion and general functions of the body. Raw greens are full of magnesium, which is a mineral that several diabetes patients are deficient in. Eating salad and raw greens in the form of smoothie or chutney everyday helps boost overall health and the micronutrients in raw food is specially for diabetes reversal.

4. Eat Rice or Roti, not both in one meal Excess carbohydrates cause blood sugar to rise. Nearly 70 percent of an Indian food plate is carbohydrate. It is also difficult to digest two types of carb in one meal. Eating either one roti or one katori rice in a meal will reduce the quantity of carb and also ease digestion and stabilizing blood sugar.

5. Eat Chutney to make every meal tasty Chutneys are ancient food wisdom given to us by our ancestors. Eating raw herbs, vegetables, nuts and seeds in the form of chutneys are great for our health. As I had mentioned earlier, raw greens and vegetables are rich in micro-nutrients that makes them great for diabetes reversal.

6. Balanced Meal Plate Balance your meal by keeping 25 percent of the plate for all essential food groups. As opposed to the age old food pyramid, the plate should now be divided into 25 percent of all for main foods. 25 percent grain for carb, 25 percent protein, 25 percent cooked vegetable and 25 percent raw greens and vegetables for micro-nutrients.

7. Herbal tea or Green tea over Milky, sweet Chai Drinking tea first thing in the morning not only causes acidity but also the milk is also not good for insulin function, as we had discussed above. Replacing tea with herbal tea or green tea during the day prevents acidity and aids bodily functions.

8. Know your Roti Wheat The type of wheat you are eating makes all the difference. Lot of people can be allergic to gluten that can cause inflammation in the stomach. Wheat also causes more acidity than rice or other lentil rotis like missi roti. Khapli wheat is indigenous wheat available in India. This wheat is better for daily consumption.

9. Buckwheat, Jowar, Bajra Rotis are better As I had mentioned earlier, wheat can cause acidity and disrupt the function of insulin that stabilizes the blood sugar. Ancient and indigenous grains like sorghum (jowar), pearl millet (bajra) and buckwheat (Kootu) are options that can be used to replace wheat in a meal.

10. Vegetables – Cook them right Overcooking vegetables makes them loose essential nutrients in the process. A quick stir fry on high heat for beans and carrot, a healthy sauté with oil water mixture for peas or steaming cauliflower may the right way to go for cooking vegetables right.

11. Starting the Day with Smoothie, No Grain Breakfast Starting the day with a healthy smoothie loaded with nutrients helps us stay energetic and fit through the day. The Freedom from Diabetes smoothie is loaded with micro-nutrients and is great before and after your morning exercise. It is made with one macro green, preferably a dark green leafy like spinach. It also has any two micro green likes paan, mint, tulsi leaves or curry leaves. It has a low sugar fruit like apple, pear or strawberry. It has spices like cinnamon, black pepper, rock salt and fresh turmeric if you have any. You can also include nuts and dried fruits for added taste and wholesomeness. If your blood sugar is stable the non-diabetics can also have this smoothie with sweeter fruits like banana and chikoo.
The food rules accompanied by exercising and building muscle (even for women) help counter diabetes. Instead of simply walking, alternate it with a little running to help reverse diabetes.
You might assume that these tips are not for me. But the truth is these foods are beneficial for everyone. If you are having trouble making drastic changes suddenly, start by making small changes like making your chai with coconut milk instead of cow’s milk. You can incorporate what is good for you forst, increase its quantity and slowly reduce the animal protein and excess carbohydrate.
Even if your parents are diabetic or the size of your waist in inches is more than half your height in inches, you might be pre diabetic without knowing it right now. Make the changes now to stop yourself from becoming diabetic later. Diabetes affects your overall energy, fitness and body functions. You become more susceptible to organ failure in the long term. Take necessary measures and incorporate good natural foods including raw foods in your diet.
