These 5 words will open thousands of doors for you

Every person is a world. Life at work, in business and even in the family is full of complex relationships, where each person has their own agenda, their own history and particular dimensions.

As we have seen previously, the projects that go ahead are not always the best; And those people who are right are not the ones who win the discussions, because the most important element in a communication process is not the content or the technique but, above all, the relationship and connection.

To be completely clear: your success doesn't just depend on your talents or your ideas; Above all, it depends on you knowing how to forge relationships . Talent and ideas are necessary, but the relationships you form along the way give them direction, direction, power and dimension.

However, in the process of making our projects come true; be it our own businesses or projects in our company, we constantly find:

  • Closed doors.
  • People in high positions or unreachable.
  • Inaccessible uncomfortable people.
  • Adversaries or people who do not want us to do well.
  • People we would like to address, but we don't know how.

How can we break down social and personal barriers to build bridges with people who can be part of our path?

A powerful phrase

The answer lies in this magical phrase that took me years to discover, and that today I am happy to share with you, hoping it will be useful to you. Remember that with great power comes great responsibility .

The opener phrase is this: Can I ask you for advice?

"Can I ask you for advice?" It is a simple and short phrase; easy to say, remember and repeat. It is a phrase that can be used constantly without losing its validity and, above all, has behind it the power of science to open the doors that until then were closed.

I have used it at different times where it seems to me to be in a dead end; where I lack answers or in which I feel that I need to form a closer relationship with a colleague, a superior, a subordinate and, even, someone who perceives me as his enemy.

After using it for a couple of years - with excellent results - I started recommending it to other people, who also reported their own success stories. Now I am sure that this is one of the most useful phrases in my professional life ... and that it can also be in yours.

It is not about magic, but about communication and science. How does it work?

1. The Ben Franklin effect

The Ben Franklin effect is a known psychological effect to change the perception that others have of us by allowing them to do us a favor.

Yes, you heard right: let them do you a favor; not you to them.

It is, at first glance, counterintuitive. We may think that, to please, we must "do" favors, but it turns out that when others do us favors, it is proven that their perception of us improves, since considering ourselves worthy of their time and attention forces them to see ourselves in a more favorable light , as valuable and kind people.

They must be favors that are not heavy, annoying or expensive. For example, asking a colleague for a ride or letting him buy us a coffee… and simply thanking him, without making him feel bad and without seeking to pay him immediately. Receive a favor ... and thank you! opens more doors than applause and flattery.

2. An elegant compliment

When asking for advice, the Ben Franklin effect is activated; But that is not all.

On the one hand, a tip is a favor or a service that costs nothing: it is free. Maybe they can deny you -for whatever reason- a ride or a coffee, but who can deny advice? Until now, for many years of using this phrase, I have never encountered someone who refuses to give advice that is asked with kindness and humility.

But there is still more! When it comes to asking for advice, we are asking for a favor as well as making a compliment. We are telling the other person that they are smart, that they are brilliant, that we respect them, and that their opinion is important . It is a gift to your own ego - a gift that no one will stop receiving. People, in general, like to be heard and taken into account.

That is why this phrase is magical. It seems like a favor, but it is also a gift.

3. Let the other shine

It can be personal advice, about work, about a project, or about an important decision. The key is to state the advice simply and clearly and then let the other speak, always respecting the 80/20 rule . When it comes to asking for advice, we are placing the conversation firmly on the other person's court, letting them speak and express their own personality and history.

When you have asked for advice, do not make excuses or explanations. Answer the question they ask you, but soon return the voice to the other person.

A rule of life: everyone likes to talk about themselves. So it will also allow you to get to know him more and forge - without feeling forced - a real human relationship, one of friendship and trust. Without his realizing it ... now they are part of the same team.

4. Peripatetic effect

When we ask another person for advice about something that interests us and we get them to be interested in it, it is possible that due to the effect of mirror neurons , which generate empathy and neural alignment between two people, both can find a solution to a real problem.

In this way, you will not only have strengthened the relationship, but you will also have a practical answer or tangible progress in your project. The best of all? The other person will feel that the idea was theirs - let them take all the credit! - and will defend and promote it with passion.

This is not a manipulative system, but a method of thinking called peripatetic , in which, through questions, we can help other people reach conclusions that they feel as their own . It is widely used in communication and negotiation. It can also be your great ally with the magic phrase.

5. Create real conversations

We waste too much time in innocuous and empty conversations, small talk to fill the time. But how much real conversations are needed! It is impressive what you can discover and achieve if you learn to master the art of conversation .

Nobody asks for advice on worthless things. We ask for advice on things that matter and concern us, that can peek into our privacy or explore big issues. The best friendships are born - says CS Lewis - when one person says to another “How? Do you also think that way? I thought I was the only one! "

Asking for advice is one of the five avenues of wealth in silence and will help you forge business, personal and friendship relationships that will pave the way for a better life.

So now you know. When you find a closed door, the best key is to ask for advice.

How to Help Someone Having a Panic Attack

Panic attacks shouldn’t be confused with stress or general anxiety, as these are extreme, unbearable, and sudden waves of anxiety and fear, often accompanied by shallow breathing, the hallmark of panic attacks. As you may imagine, it’s no surprise that panic attacks feel overwhelming for those who experience them, but they can also be paralyzing to those present while someone else is experiencing an attack.

If you’re not sure how you should react or help a person having a panic attack, especially if a family member, coworker, or friend tends to get them from time to time, read on. There are several grounding techniques you can use to alleviate the intensity of an attack and help them be more grounded and calm. We explain some of these techniques below:

1. Stay as calm as possible
In order to be able to aid someone during a panic attack, you must understand the dynamics of the condition. Firstly, it’s important to note that anyone can get a panic attack for no apparent reason, and the onset of the condition is typically sudden and unexpected.

While many people experience recurring panic attacks, and they will often know to recognize them for what they are and how to deal with them, others only get only one or two panic attacks throughout their lifetime. Those who don’t have any experience with panic attacks may confuse the condition for something else, often a heart attack, which may further worsen their symptoms. However, unlike a heart attack, a panic attack is typically caused by stress and will resolve within 20-30 minutes.

This is important to know for you as an observer, as you will need to decide whether or not to call an ambulance. Though the symptoms of a panic attack can seem extreme and may manifest through shortness of breath, chest pain, sweating, and shaking, they will go away on their own. Knowing this will help you remain calm and be there for the person during a panic attack.

If you feel that you're getting nervous or irritated yourself and can't stay calm in the situation, it's better to withdraw, if possible, as a negative attitude can worsen their experience even more.

2. Connect with the person having an attack
How to Help Someone Having a Panic Attack holding hands in support
Talking to a person experiencing a panic attack can be a lot more beneficial than one might think, as it can distract them from their symptoms and calm their breathing. That said, some people familiar with the condition may prefer staying silent or even on their own, so make sure to always ask if a person needs your help and company instead of just assuming that they do without asking.

If the person agrees to accept your help, here are some useful tips:

1. If you don't know the person, you can introduce yourself and ask them if they had a panic attack before. If so, inquire how they have dealt with them in the past, as this can help the sufferer remember the calming technique they may already know.

2. Ask the person if they need to go to a calmer place, especially if you're in a crowded and loud place, but don't press them to do so, the main thing is to keep them comfortable.

3. Support the person by letting them know that you're there for them. Remind them that the attack will not last long, and offer other kind words.

4. If you know the person well, you can try distracting them by bringing up topics interesting for the person experiencing an attack.

That said, avoid telling a person that they have to calm down and the like because this is rarely helpful and may sound judgmental, which could make matters far worse.

3. Suggest one of these grounding techniques
Sometimes, a panic attack can be so overwhelming that a person will lose their connection to reality and their surroundings. If you notice that happening, suggest one of the following:

1. Offer a seat on a comfortable chair or couch, give them a pillow and blanket, if possible. Going back to the previously-mentioned tips, your goal is to make the person feel more comfortable and relaxed.

2. Try to bring the person back to reality by asking them what day of the week it is, what they had for breakfast, or any other mundane and basic question. You can even ask them to do some simple mathematical calculations.

3. The 5-4-3-2-1 method. This trick is often used by psychotherapists and it is known for helping a person having an attack focus on their surroundings and their senses. Ask the person to look around and identify 5 things they see, 4 items they can touch, 3 sounds they can hear, 2 smells they can perceive, and 1 taste.

4. Help them breathe more steadily
How to Help Someone Having a Panic Attack Help them breathe deeply
Fast and irregular breathing is the main cause of many unpleasant symptoms of panic attacks, such as chest pain, dizziness, and a racing heart. That's why it's important to help the person get their breathing under control. Some patients will be familiar with some sort of breathing technique, such as Tactical Breathing or the like, and if they do, just let them proceed.

If, however, they need your assistance, the best thing you can do is breathe slowly and deeply yourself and ask the person to mirror your breathing several times until you see that their breathing pattern is returning to normal. Doctors point out that you should NEVER give the patient a paper bag to breathe through during a panic attack, as this can lead to them losing consciousness.

5. Check-in How to Help Someone  How to Help Someone Having a Panic Attack women connecting with each other
Having a Panic Attack women connecting with each other Like Those suffering from panic attacks are often anxious people, and the unpleasant experience you've shared may lead them to be ashamed or afraid to talk to you again. Show your support by checking in with them from time to time, calling or otherwise communicating with them to help them feel more at ease with their condition.

When to Seek Help
Firstly, if you know nothing about the person or their health conditions, and they're not willing to communicate with you, don't try to force them and call the ambulance because what seems like a panic attack could also end up being a heart attack or another life-threatening condition.

You should also call an ambulance if the panic attack doesn't seem to stop for a long time, a person is vomiting, and experiencing pain in the extremities, chest pain, or say that they feel like they're dying. After all, it's safer for you to call the ambulance and then find out that the person was only experiencing a panic attack than miss a health emergency.

How a rapid field testing device could help head off future epidemics

Mechanical engineer Juan Santiago is an expert in microfluidics — compact chemistry labs that are increasingly being used to test various liquids for toxins, pollution, parasites, microbes and more.
Santiago and graduate student Ashwin Ramachandran are working to adapt one of his microfluidic tests for tuberculosis to detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. Here’s an excerpt of a conversation with him about his project.

What is microfluidics?
Microfluidics is, essentially, a tiny medical lab that fits in the palm of your hand. There are very small tubes and pumps and so forth that move fluids — like those from a nasal swab, a teardrop amount is all it takes — through a series of chemical reactions. There’s a computer processor monitoring everything and a USB connection relays information to and from a computer. In fact, our test can be controlled in the field using a smartphone. It’s very mobile. Very compact. And very fast.

What is the advantage of your system over existing tests?
The advantages are several. First, it’s portable and could be used by any doctor, nurse or technician in the field at the point of care. Second, it’s fast. Existing tests can take eight hours or longer and samples must be sent to a central facility. No such point-of-care assay currently exists for SARS-CoV-2.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, our test can detect an active COVID-19 infection — which is key to early detection and treatment. The current rapid assays are based on antibodies to the virus, not the virus itself. So, those tests can tell the caregiver that the person has had the infection. Ours will tell them whether the patient is currently infected — and, therefore, infectious. This is a big distinction in isolating people who can infect others.

How does your test work?
In technical terms, the lab first looks for traces of genetic material in the sample — a corollary to DNA known as RNA. RNA is the protein that decodes DNA to create the proteins necessary for life. Viruses leave little traces of themselves wherever they go in the form of RNA.

If you find RNA, you can actually recreate the DNA that produced it — a process known as reverse transcription. Next, we need to create a lot of the DNA, that is we need to “amplify” it. Then, we do another process where we tag the DNA from the virus with tiny fluorescent molecules, so that when we illuminate the sample with an ultraviolet light the samples with coronavirus glow green. That’s how we would know the patient has the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. In a sample where no virus RNA is present, the sample does not glow.

It’s actually quite a bit more complicated than this, because a sample always contains lots of RNA — from the patient themselves, from any microbes present, even from other viruses that aren’t life-threatening.

We want to know specifically that the patient has SARS-CoV-2, and not the common cold or the flu. That’s quite tricky as you can imagine, especially to do it fast enough to keep up with the virus.
All that transcribing, amplifying and tagging takes place in this compact package that can be taken into the field pretty much anywhere. We hope to get the test down to under 45 minutes or so, start to finish.

How quickly do you think you can have test kits ready to go?
Well, we think the window is too narrow to help out much with COVID-19, but we’re working as fast as we can. However, a microfluidic test kit like this could be easily reconfigured to head off future epidemics much more quickly than with COVID-19. You could quickly email the new RNA you were looking for and the kits could be reconfigured on the spot to look for any new virus or microbe of concern. We use the tuberculosis bacterium in our test now — it’s not safe to use the SARS-CoV-2 virus at this time — but the technology is applicable to any RNA, so you can imagine quick tests for bacteria like E. coli, MRSA, anthrax or viruses like the flu, Ebola or HIV, even parasites like malaria, schistosomiasis and others. It would be a very powerful tool.
