Stay Away From These 11 Deadly Foods That Could Cause Cancer

You may know that optimal health starts in the kitchen, and but did you know that diet is at the heart of many cancers?

In fact, up to 70% of cancers are thought to be preventable through diet. The other 30% has to do with genetics and environmental factors that you can’t control.
Still, those are solid odds to encourage better eating! Stick with us for all the foods you would do best to avoid in order to minimize your chances of ever developing cancer.

At the end, we’ll show you an easy way to determine what stuff is actually good to eat.

11. Canned Products
Canned food tends to contain really high levels of salt and/or sugar, but that’s not the main reason it is bad for you. It’s actually the cans that contain the food.

They are often lined with the dangerous chemical BPA, which is a known hormone disrupter that has also been linked to cancer. BPA will leech into whatever food comes in contact with it, especially things that are naturally acidic, such as tomatoes.

Eat your produce fresh or frozen instead, or only buy canned products that are labeled as BPA-free.

10. Soda Pop
We are not telling you anything you don’t already know when we say that soda is bad for you. Sugar is necessary in small amounts, but is also cancer cells’ favorite food, and sodas contain enough to choke a horse.

It also has no redeeming nutritional value and puts you at greater risk of cancer due to the artificial chemicals and colorings that are added. If it’s a caffeine energy boost you need, a much healthier option is lightly sweetened tea or coffee, both of which have anti-cancer properties.

To get the bubbles in soda without the negative health consequences, buy carbonated water and add a touch of citrus juice for flavor.

9. Potato Chips
Chips aren’t healthy because they contain a lot of salt and saturated fat which is overwhelming to your body’s digestive system.

The reason they increase your cancer risk is something called acrylamide, a carcinogenic chemical that occurs anytime food is cooked to a high temperature.

Frying potatoes produces a lot of it, but it’s also the reason why health experts advise against charring your meat during cooking. Acrylamide is also found in cigarettes and is part of the reason they are so deadly.

8. Smoked And Processed Meats
Red meat in general should be limited due to its high fat content, but any meat that has been processed is best avoided almost entirely. That won’t be easy because a lot of tasty products are on the list, including bacon, lunch meat, sausage, jerky, and smoked barbeque.

A lot of these foods are preserved using nitrates and nitrites, which are linked to cancer. And even though smoking is an age-old technique for preserving food, it causes meat to take on tar in the process. It’s bad in cigarettes and just as dangerous in food.

7. Farmed Salmon
You may be wondering what is left that you can eat, especially in terms of protein, but rest assured that fish can still be a very healthy choice. Naturally lean, it contains high levels of the healthy omega-3 fatty acids that your body really needs.

Unfortunately, farmed salmon live an overcrowded, high stress life and are fed an unnatural diet full of antibiotics and cancer-causing chemicals. As a result, their meat is high in PCBs, dioxins, and mercury – all dangerous stuff for humans to consume.

However, wild sockeye salmon is a whole different story, and a great meal choice if you can find it at the grocery store.

6. Microwave Popcorn

Much like canned foods, the problem with microwave popcorn is the way it is stored. Most microwave bags are lined with a product called PFOA, which has been linked to the occurrence of pancreas, kidney, liver, bladder, and testicular cancer.

When you pop the corn in the microwave, PFOA coats the finished product right along with the artificial trans fat “butter”. Popcorn itself can be a healthy snack, however, if you use an air popper and then toss it with a little bit of garlic-infused olive oil or a flavorful dried herb mix.

5. White Flour

Whole grains are very healthy, but the processing that creates refined white flour completely strips away the value. White flour is also given its color by a blast of chlorine gas, not something you want to be eating.

Besides being nutritionally void, white flour has an extremely high glycemic index, which means that it breaks down into sugar in the body, spiking blood glucose and insulin levels along with it. This state in the body is thought to feed cancer cells. Try to stick to baked goods that use whole grain flours.

4. High Fructose Corn Syrup

High fructose corn syrup is dangerous because, even though it comes from natural corn, the sweetness is highly concentrated. Foods that contain it are likely to put your blood sugar through the roof and create the perfect environment for cancer cells to thrive.

It is not thought to cause cancer directly, but it’s dangerous to create conditions in your body that are ideal for cancer to grow. Avoiding packaged foods and cooking at home is the best way to avoid high fructose corn syrup all together.

3. Alcohol

Excess alcohol consumption is bad for you for lots of reasons. Drinking to excess makes your liver and kidneys work extra hard, not to mention triggers a whole host of bad decisions from your stupefied brain.

Studies also indicate that consuming too much alcohol puts you at greater risk for cancer of the mouth, esophagus, liver, colon, and rectum. How much is too much? In general, one drink per day for women and two for men is considered safe, but there’s no real health benefit to drinking at all. Red wine does contain some heart healthy resveratrol, but so do red grapes.

2. Pickled Foods

Pickling is another form of processing that adds nitrates or nitrites, salt, and artificial coloring to food. In much the same way that too much alcohol can cause cancer in the parts of the body it touches directly, pickled foods are linked to cancer of the digestive track, especially the stomach and colon.

If you really love pickles, take the time to make them at home so that you can control the level of salt and avoid artificial pickling solutions.

1. Hydrogenated Oils

You might think that oil from vegetables ought to be healthy, but this is another case where processing of natural products makes them dangerous. Oil cannot be extracted from whole vegetables naturally, so they undergo a chemical extraction process.

Then, the oil is colored and the natural scent is removed to make the finished product look appealing. This chemical process is what makes the oil hydrogenated.

It is found in many processed foods, added for texture and to preserve them, but hydrogenated oils affect the cells’ structure and flexibility, upping the chance for cancer to develop.

Conclusion
Can you sense the common thread in these cancer-causing foods? Yep, they are all highly processed from their natural form into something more convenient or aesthetically pleasing.

Unfortunately, the processing almost always strips the whole food of its nutrients and adds a level of seasoning with sugar and salt that can be quite harmful to human bodies.

The easiest way to cancer-proof your diet is to focus on buying whole foods at the store and cooking at home, so that you control the processing. When you leave the packaged stuff behind, you can be sure that you know exactly what’s going into your body.

17 Cancer Causing Foods You Have to Stop Eating

You are likely aware that eating junk food is a major risk factor for cancer. But did you know that some so-called health foods are actually carcinogens in disguise?

Or that certain ingredients found in virtually all packaged foods present a serious health risk?
By being an informed consumer, we can help influence for good the types of products that end up on our grocery shelves, and enjoy better health to boot.

Read on to discover 17 very common foods known to increase cancer risk, along with some healthier alternatives.

1. Soda
Not only is soda jampacked with sugar – cancer’s fuel of choice – but it often also contains caramel color. This artificial coloring has the carcinogenic chemical 4-MEI as a byproduct. Laboratory tests show that 4-MEI shows up in sodas with caramel color.
Alternatives – Water is always best, but if you really crave the sweet, bubbly hit of soda, choose a natural brand without caramel color.

2. Grilled red meat
While a nice char on that steak may taste good, the high temperatures used for its cooking produce cancer-causing hydrocarbons. And excessive consumption of red meat in general is thought to up your cancer risk..
Alternatives – Eat red meat sparingly, cook it carefully, and choose organic, grass fed beef if possible.

3. Microwave popcorn
There’s a triple whammy here – the butter flavoring used in many microwave popcorn brands releases diacetyl, a known toxin, when cooked. Next, the perfluorooctanoic acid that lines the bags themselves is carcinogenic. And finally, popcorn producers are not required to report whether or not their kernels are GMO.
Alternatives – Buy organic kernels and pop them in an air popper or on your stove.

4.Canned foods
Canned foods are dangerous because the cans are lined with the chemical BPA, a known hormone disrupter. Canned tomatoes are especially problematic because their acidity causes the BPA to leach into the food. Tomatoes in general are very healthy; it’s the packaging that’s the problem here.
Alternatives – Eat fresh or frozen produce.

5. Hydrogenated oils
Vegetable oils are not extracted from their source naturally, but instead must undergo a chemical process. Later, even more chemicals are added to achieve the desired look and consistency of the product, resulting in an extremely high level of unhealthy omega-6 fats.
Alternatives – Choose olive, soy, or canola oil instead; these oils are naturally extracted.

6.Farmed salmon
Though wild-caught salmon is one of the healthiest proteins you can eat, the farmed version is fed an unnatural diet full of chemicals, pesticides, and antibiotics. They are also fattier than wild-caught, and therefore store more of the bad stuff in their bodies.
Alternatives – Eat wild-caught salmon or augment your diet with a purified fish oil supplement.

7. Artificial sweeteners
Most artificial sweeteners are produced by a chemical process, and there isn’t enough data to really deem them safe. Some studies suggest that artificial sweeteners cause the toxin DKP to build up in the body and potentially cause brain tumors.
Alternatives – If you must use sweetener, choose plant-based Stevia. Certain recipes can also substitute applesauce for sweetener.

8. Refined white flour
The refining process strips away all nutritional value from the original wheat. Even worse, the flour is then bleached with chlorine gas to achieve that appealing white color. White flour is a carbohydrate that breaks down into simple sugar, cancer’s preferred fuel.
Alternatives – Choose unbleached, whole wheat flour for your cooking, and read labels carefully to determine how much of the white stuff is in packaged products.

9. Non-organic fruits and vegetables
The fruits and veggies themselves are extremely healthy, but the pesticides sprayed on them are anything but. Altrazine, for example, is a weed-killer that has been banned in Europe for causing severe problems in humans, but is still commonly used in the U.S.
Alternatives – Buy organic as much as you can, and carefully wash all produce before eating.

10. Processed meat
This includes things like bacon, hot dogs, sausage, and deli meats. The processing often adds huge amounts of salt as well as dangerous chemicals, especially nitrate and nitrite. The additives are intended to make the food look nicer and last longer, but carry a steep risk to your health.
Alternatives – Eat mostly fresh, organic meats and look for other products with minimal processing and no preservatives.

11. Potato chips
Potato chips are offenders for several reasons. One, they are fried in trans fats, and two, they are loaded with salt. Many varieties also have preservatives and artificial coloring.
Alternatives – Pretzels, air popped popcorn, dried apple or banana chips.

12. GMO Foods
There is fierce debate about the safety of GMO foods. Huge food producers like GMO products because they have been modified to better resist pests, be easier to transport, and last longer. However, very little safety testing was done before the foods hit shelves, and we have no idea of their long-term health effects.
Alternatives – Organic produce and meats; packaged foods with a Non-GMO label.

13. Alcohol
Studies by the National Cancer Institute have shown a link between alcohol consumption and cancers of the head and neck, esophagus, liver, breast, and colon.
Alternatives – If you are not ready to quit entirely, keep your alcohol consumption in the low risk category – no more than 3 drinks in a sitting for women and 4 drinks in a sitting for men, with no more than 7 drinks total per week for women and 14 total per week for men.

14. Refined sugars
The worst offender in this category is high fructose corn syrup, and it’s in a ton of processed foods and drinks. For example, you’ll find 15 teaspoons of the stuff in one 20 oz soda! As we know, cancer loves to feed on sugar.
Alternatives – Always scan the ingredients list when buying packaged food; the sugar content will surprise you. Satisfy your sweet tooth with whole fruit rather than candy.

15. Margarine

Margarine was supposed to be a healthier alternative to butter, but as it turns out, margarine is made from hydrogenated vegetable oils and is full of trans fats. Recent studies have suggested that trans fats are way more dangerous than the saturated fats found in butter.
Alternatives – Still go easy on the butter, but choose it over margarine. Olive oil flavored with herbs is also a nice topping for bread or veggies.

16. Diet foods
This one’s a real kick in the teeth – you think you’re making a smart choice by purchasing “diet” foods, but in reality these products are often jammed with extra sugar or artificial sweeteners to replace any fat that’s removed. They may also contain various chemicals designed to get you hooked and coming back for more.
Alternatives – Eat fresh, whole foods rather than packaged diet meals.

17.French fries
French fries taste so good, but being fried in trans fats and then heavily salted makes them a real cancer risk. Foods heated to such a high temperature also produce acrylamide, a known carcinogen found in cigarette smoke.
Alternatives – Check out some recipes for baked fries; using flavorful spices and olive oil produces a very tasty and much healthier side dish.

CONCLUSION
It’s easy to be overwhelmed by information on the good and the bad in food choices.
But luckily it can all be boiled down into some simple guidelines. Simply shifting your mealtime balance towards whole foods (away from packaged products) and skipping the sodas will make a huge difference in cancer risk.

Ultra-processed foods can cause weight gain

Examining the effects of processed food, researchers found that, people eating processed foods consumed more calories and gained more weight than when they ate minimally processed diet.

Researchers considered foods ' ultra-processed' if they've ingredients predominantly found in industrial food manufacturing, such as hydrogenated oils, high-fructose corn syrup, flavouring agents and emulsifiers.

Though we examined a small group, results from this tightly controlled experiment showed a clear and consistent difference between the 2 diets. This is the 1st study to demonstrate causality that ultra-processed foods cause people to eat too many calories and gain weight, wrote the study's lead author.

For the study, researchers admitted 20 healthy adult volunteers, 10 male and 10 female, for one continuous month and in random order for 2 weeks on each diet, providing them with meals made up of ultra-processed foods or meals of minimally processed foods.

For e.g., an ultra-processed breakfast might consist of bagel with cream cheese and turkey bacon, while the unprocessed breakfast was oatmeal with bananas, walnuts and skim milk.

The ultra-processed and unprocessed meals had the same amounts of calories, sugars, fibre, fat and carbohydrates and participants could eat as much or as little as they wanted.

We needs to figure out what specific aspect of the ultra-processed foods affected people's eating behaviour and led them to gain weight, The next step was to design similar studies with a reformulated ultra-processed diet to see if the changes can make the diet effect on calorie intake and body weight disappear, the researcher said.

Over time, extra calories add up, and that extra weight can lead to serious health conditions. Research like this is an important part of understanding the role of nutrition in healthy and may also help people identify foods that are both nutritious and accessible helping people stay healthy for the long term, said one of the researchers.

While the study reinforces the benefits of unprocessed foods, researchers note that ultra-processed foods can be difficult to restrict.

We've to be mindful that it takes more time and more money to prepare less-processed foods. Just telling people to eat healthier may not be effective for some people without improved access to healthy foods, he explained.

Top five cancer-causing foods you might be consuming everyday

What if your staple diet contains carcinogens, but you keep consuming them daily without realising it? Perhaps, the consequences of daily consumption of these foods can be deadly as it can deplete your body’s natural defense mechanism against foreign particles.

While millions of people are being diagnosed with some type of cancer every year, it’s time we took note of our lifestyles, including eating habits, to avoid falling victim to this dreaded disease. A number of studies have linked certain foods to cancer in addition to other health problems such as heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Here is a list of foods that you probably consume every day without realising that they may contain cancer-causing chemicals:

Canned foods
You may have to avoid this category because most canned goods, such as canned tomatoes, are lined with a chemical called bisphenol-A (BPA), which has been shown to genetically alter the brain cells of rats, and may cause cancer in people. Tomatoes being highly acidic are exceptionally dangerous and can cause BPA to leech from the lining of the can into the tomatoes themselves.

Potato chips

You might love the taste of crunchy potato chips, but they are high in fat and calories, both of which contribute to unintended weight gain. Potato chips and French fries also contain higher levels of acrylamide - a known carcinogen that is found in cigarettes - compared with other foods.

Processed and red meats

The World Health Organisation (WHO) classified processed meat as Group 1, carcinogenic to humans and red meat as Group 2A, probably carcinogenic to humans.

It said that in the case of processed meat, the classification is based on sufficient evidence from epidemiological studies that eating processed meat causes colorectal cancer. Whereas, in the case of red meat, the classification is based on limited evidence from epidemiological studies showing positive associations between eating red meat and developing colorectal cancer as well as strong mechanistic evidence.

All mammalian muscle meat, including, beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horse, and goat are classified as red meat. Processed meats include hot dogs, sausages, bacon, and most lunch meats.

Microwave popcorn

Microwave popcorn contains chemicals that can increase your risk of cancer. The culprit here isn’t the popcorn itself, but it is the chemically-lined bag. Microwave popcorn bags are lined with a chemical known as perfluoro-octanoic acid (or PFOA) that has been linked to an increased risk of liver, bladder, kidney, and testicular cancer in humans. In addition, a study from the University of California linked this toxin to infertility in women.

Hydrogenated oils

Hydrogenated oils, also known as trans fats, are linked to heart disease, immune system deficiency, and cancer. These are vegetable oils that have been processed by creating a chemical reaction with hydrogen - to increase the shelf life of the oil. Margarine is an example of complete hydrogenation. Replacing hydrogenated oils with olive oil, coconut, or grapeseed oil in your diet is a great way to help you live a healthier, happier life.

The top five cancer-causing foods

The top five cancer-causing foods

graphic1. Hot Dogs. Because they are high in nitrates, the Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month. If you can't live without hot dogs, buy those made withoutsodium nitrate.

2. Processed meats and Bacon Also high in the same sodium nitrates found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart disease. The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.

graphic3. Doughnuts Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures. Doughnuts may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer.

graphic4. French fries Like doughnuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures. They also contain cancer- causing acryl amides which occur during the frying process. They should be called cancer fries, not French fries.
