7 Probiotics that Boost Your Health, Besides Yogurt

Can you name two probiotics other than yogurt? If you can't think of another item that is rich in protein then this post is for you. Probiotic stands for promotion (pro) of life (biotic). We all have tiny organisms living inside us. These organisms, which are also known as microorganisms are so numerous, they actually outnumber the human cells in our body. Probiotics are one such bacteria that is important for us. While bacteria are infamous for causing diseases, probiotics are essential for our body to carry out the gastrointestinal functions smoothly.

What do probiotics do?

Probiotics can be of benefit to a number of health issues. It can ward off infections, improve the immune system, fight obesity and improve women's health. Research has found that probiotics can effectively treat common gastrointestinal problems, in particular, antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD). Multiple types of probiotics are found in fermented foods. They have also earned themselves a great reputation in fighting against constipation.

There are instances where probiotic therapy is prescribed to effectively treat Crohn's disease, urinary tract infections, irritable bowel syndrome, bladder concerns, vaginal infections, ulcers, issues related to the colon and eczema in children. So, if you have restricted yourself to plain or flavored yogurt for your daily dose of probiotics, you should look into more options. You will be surprised to know that there are in fact, quite a few. Here are 7 probiotic options you can feast on:

1. Dark Chocolate
Dark chocolate has a number of sweet health benefits. In addition to being a rich source of antioxidants and fiber, dark chocolate is a great probiotic in itself. When you eat dark chocolate, the good bacteria in the gut eat it and feed on them, so they grow. Eventually, they produce anti-inflammatory compounds. To reap further benefits, you can dip some fruit in dark chocolate.

2. Fermented Cheese
While cheese is a fermented product, not all types of cheese contain probiotics. To be sure you're getting your dose, check the labels for live cultures in the cheese. Cheeses rich in probiotics include cheddar, mozzarella, gouda, Swiss, and cottage cheese. According to the Journal of Applied Microbiology, the good bacteria in these cheeses survive the manufacturing and aging process.

3. Kombucha
This tea is packed with probiotics. Kombucha is a fermented tea that is loaded with good bacteria and is either a black or green tea that is often referred to as mushroom tea. It is packed with loads of health benefits, predominantly those that ensure a proper functioning of the digestive and immune systems, reduce inflammation and help in weight loss.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar
This is a little tricky. Since apple cider has a variety of uses, it tends to be found in every household. It is therefore easy to get your hands on this probiotic-rich drink. The apple components are great for the gut bacteria. However, you shouldn't consume this directly. It is best diluted with water or added to food.

5. Pickles
Pickles are low in calories, high in sodium and potassium and are the perfect healthy snack to munch on. Pickled cucumbers are excellent for gut health just be sure to choose sour pickles and not the ones that are doused with vinegar. A solution made of sea salt and water is the perfect environment for good bacteria to grow.

6. Kefir
Kefir is a probiotic milk drink that is made by adding kefir grains to milk. It is quite popular in the world of health and tastes great when added to milkshakes and smoothies. It is delicious for ingesting some probiotics.

7. Miso
Japanese cuisine is rich in fermented source of cancer fighting-probiotics. Miso is a seasoning used in most Japanese dishes. It is rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, and probiotics. The next time you visit a restaurant for sushi, order a bowl of miso soup to keep cerebral and myocardial infarctions at bay.

This diabetes drug cuts heart failure risk by 34%: Study

The new type of drugs for type 2 diabetes -- SGLT2 inhibitors -- are associated with a reduced risk of heart failure by 34 per cent, researchers said.
The new SGLT2 inhibitors, which are now a commonly used drug group, reduce blood glucose, they added.

In the study published, the researchers wanted to show if there were positive cardiovascular effects from SGLT2 inhibitors in a broader patient group.

"There is cardiovascular benefit from SGLT2 inhibitors for a broader patient group in routine clinical care. This is an important result that we believe may be of interest to patients as well as drug authorities and doctors," said study principal investigator .

The researchers used several national registries containing data on drug use, diseases, cause of death and other data from close to 21,000 patients with type 2 diabetes who began treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors between April 2013 and December 2016.

This information was then compared with an equal size matched population who began treatment with a different diabetes drug -- DPP4 inhibitor.

The primary outcomes in the study were major cardiovascular events defined as myocardial infarction, stroke or cardiovascular death and hospital admission for heart failure. An important secondary outcome was death by any cause.

In the primary analysis, the patients were monitored throughout the follow-up period, regardless of whether they had completed their treatment.

The researchers found that the use of SGLT2 inhibitors was associated with a reduced risk of heart failure but not with major cardiovascular events.

The risk of heart failure was 34 per cent lower in the SGLT2 inhibitor group than in the DPP4 inhibitor group.

The use of SGLT2 inhibitors was also linked to a 20 per cent lower risk of death.

The results are applicable primarily to dapaglifozin, which was the predominant SGLT2 inhibitor used in Scandinavia during the study period.

Myocardial ischemia: Know the risk factors to it keep it at bay

Myocardial ischemia is a heart condition in which your blood flow to the heart is reduced preventing the muscles in the heart to receive required oxygen. This happens either due to complete or partial blockage of your heart arteries. This leads to the reduced ability of your heart muscles to pump blood. If not treated on time, myocardial ischemia can cause heart attack or severe abnormal heart rhythm. If you have this condition, you may experience symptoms like neck or jaw pain, a fast heartbeat, sweating, fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, vomiting etc. As far as its diagnosis is concerned, doctors perform ECG, stress test, echocardiogram, stress echocardiogram, coronary angiography, or cardiac CT scan. Treatment of myocardial ischemia depends on the severity of the condition. The doctors basically try to improve the blood flow to the heart muscles. A patient with this condition may be prescribed aspirin, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers etc. If the condition is severe, doctor may perform angioplasty and stenting, coronary artery bypass surgery, or enhanced external counterpulsation. To keep myocardial ischemia at bay, you need to know its risk factors first. Read on to know about them.

Smoking: Smoke can damage the inside walls of arteries and allow cholesterol deposits to slow blood flow in the coronary arteries.

Diabetes: Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of myocardial ischemia.

High blood pressure: Hypertension can worsen atherosclerosis, leading to damage to the coronary arteries.

Obesity: Obesity is linked to diabetes, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol levels, factors which are already known to cause myocardial ischemia.

Sedentary lifestyle: Not being active contributes to obesity, which is already associated with ischemia.

Diabetes Drug Linked to Lower Risk of Heart Disease

Using liraglutide, an injectable drug widely used to lower blood sugar levels, may help reduce risk of myocardial infarction, stroke or cardiovascular death, suggests a study.

Liraglutide is a diabetes medication in clinical use since 2009. It is a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist that lowers blood sugar and reduces body weight.

The findings, showed that people who used liraglutide had five fewer major cardiovascular events for three years.
According to a senior researcher,
Our study provides support for the cardiovascular effectiveness of liraglutide among a broader unselected group of patients, providing important confirmatory evidence from routine clinical practice. We believe it may be of interest to drug regulators, clinical guidelines, physicians and patients.
Use of liraglutide was also associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular death and any cause of death.

The Study

For the study, the team used several nationwide registers with information on prescription drugs, diseases and other data from more than 46,000 patients in Sweden and Denmark between 2010 and 2016.

Around 23,000 patients initiating treatment with liraglutide were compared with the same number of patients initiating treatment with another diabetes drug, DPP4 inhibitors.

The main outcome in the study was on major cardiovascular events, defined as myocardial infarction, stroke or cardiovascular death.
The rate of major cardiovascular events was 14 per 1,000 person-years among patients using liraglutide and 15.4 per 1,000 among patients using DPP4 inhibitors, a statistically significant difference, the researchers said.

Flu virus makes you 6 times more prone to heart attacks!

People suffering from influenza may be at six-fold increased risk of experiencing a heart attack, particularly in first seven days, warned a study emphasising the importance of vaccination.
The risk may be higher for older adults, patients with influenza B infections, and patients experiencing their first heart attack.

“Our findings are important because an association between influenza and acute myocardial infarction reinforces the importance of vaccination,” said the lead author.

“The study, combined with previous evidence that influenza vaccination reduces cardiovascular events and mortality, support international guidelines that advocate for influenza immunisation in those at high risk of a heart attack,” the author added.

In the study, the researchers identified 332 patients from 2009 to 2014 who were hospitalised for a heart attack within one year of a laboratory-confirmed influenza diagnosis.

They found a significant association between acute respiratory infections, particularly influenza, and acute myocardial infarction.

However, the risk was not as high with infection from other respiratory viruses.
As per World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates seasonal influenza outbreaks each year cause three million to five million severe cases and 300,000 to 500,000 deaths globally.

According to the researchers, flu season in 2018 has been unusually active and is still spreading in many countries.

While over 60,000 samples testing positive for influenza have been reported since monitoring for the virus began on October 1, a total of 30 children have died from in 2018 in a country, the Dr. said.

“People at risk of heart disease should take precautions to prevent respiratory infections, and especially influenza, through measures including vaccinations and hand-washing,” the Dr. suggested.
