Health Benefits of Olives

1) Improves heart health
Olives possess a monounsaturated fat known as oleic acid, which has been linked to preventing heart disease. The oil of olives is where this compound can be found, and it’s responsible for lowering the blood pressure, which reduce the chances of cardiovascular complications and general stress on your body.
Furthermore, olives are rich in phenolic compounds that act as anticoagulants to thin the blood, which decreases the chances of blood clots developing and dangerously blocking blood flow. Apart from that, they also ease blood vessel tension and dilate the blood vessels, which decreases the strain on the heart and increases blood flow around the body. This helps to ensure proper functioning and oxygenation of various organs.
2. Lower Bone Loss
People who follow a Mediterranean diet have been found to have lower instances of bone loss and osteoporosis. The compounds hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein, both found in olives, have been linked to increased calcium deposition and bone growth, leading to much-reduced instances of osteoporosis in people who adhere to the diet.
3. Reduces Inflammation
There are various compounds in olives that have anti-inflammatory properties. These help to reduce inflammation in the body, leading to a reduction in pain and irritation in the joints, tendons, muscles, and other extremities. Therefore, olives are great for those who suffer from gout, arthritis, and other rheumatic conditions.
4. Aids Digestion
Olives are a great source of fiber, supplying around 20% of the daily requirements in a single cup. Therefore, olives stimulate peristaltic motion in the intestines, ensuring smooth bowel movements. To add to this, fiber also makes you feel full, so ghrelin, the hunger hormone, doesn’t get released, meaning overeating can be controlled.
5. Helps Prevent Cancer
Olives contain anthocyanins, which is an antioxidant that has been linked to cancer prevention. Antioxidants defend the body against free radicals, which mutate healthy cells into cancerous ones, so adding as many antioxidants to your diet as possible is a great way to protect yourself.
To add to this, the skin of an olive contains maslinic, which has been linked to a programmed cell death (apoptosis) in colon cancer cells.
6. Treat Allergies
Olives can also help reduce the intensity of allergic reactions. Certain components of olives function as anti-histamines by blocking the receptor sites for histamines, which induce allergic reactions. Therefore, by adding olives to your diet, you may reduce the symptoms of seasonal allergies.
7. Improves Circulation
Olives are a great source of iron and copper, two essential components for the creation of healthy red blood cells. Without these two minerals, red blood cell counts in the body would diminish, resulting in anemia. This is characterized by fatigue, an upset stomach, cognitive malfunction, headaches, and a decline in organ health and functionality.
8. Antibacterial Qualities
Oleuropein also functions as an antimicrobial and antibacterial agent for the body. Therefore, eating plenty of olives helps defend your body against infections.

A New Revolutionary Way to Fight Cancer

Scientists have made a great step in their ongoing fight against cancer, developing a new way to kill cancer cells that may eventually give the world a new treatment option with better results than current methods.

Named Caspase-Independent Cell Death (CICD), it was able to completely destroy colorectal cancer cells that were grown in the lab. If the same results can be reproduced in humans, then we could finally have a treatment that can eliminate cancers in a way that is less destructive to the body with a lower chance of the cancer returning, according to the team.

One of the researchers, states that “in essence, this mechanism has the potential to dramatically improve the effectiveness of anti-cancer therapy and reduce unwanted toxicity. Taking into consideration our findings, we propose that engaging CICD as a means of anti-cancer therapy warrants further investigation."

Current anti-cancer treatments work by apoptosis, a kind of programmed cell death where cells are ordered to destroy themselves, via proteins called caspases. This is how chemotherapy works, and it works well, but there are caveats.
These treatments can miss some of their targets, meaning cancer cells don’t get eliminated and that tumors have a greater chance of returning. Furthermore, they also damage healthy cells.

Enter CICD, which uses some of the mechanisms of apoptosis, but takes caspases out of the equation. When cells are destroyed by CICD, they send a signal to the immune system that will then attack any remaining cancer cells. This is a cleaner and safer way of treating tumors – though it’s worth emphasizing that the treatment has only been tested on lab models so far.

The hypothesis is that a therapy wouldn’t need to kill of all the cancer cells itself, as the body’s own immune system will swoop in and finish the job.

While these experiments focused on colon cancer, the researchers say that it could be adapted to tackle different types of cancers too. That’s one of the areas that will be investigated in future studies as scientists look to see whether it could work in humans.

Researcher says that “this new research suggests there could be a better way to kill cancer cells which, as an added bonus, also activates the immune system. Now scientists need to investigate this idea further and, if further studies confirm it is effective, develop ways to trigger this particular route of cell death in humans.”

New eye test may detect early signs of glaucoma

Researchers have developed a simple eye test that could help solve the biggest global cause of irreversible blindness, glaucoma, by detecting the onset of the disease at a very early stage.

Loss of sight in patients with glaucoma is caused by the death of cells in the retina at the back of the eye. This cell death is called apoptosis.

The new technique called DARC stands for detection of apoptosing retinal cells.

It uses a specially developed fluorescent marker which attaches to cell proteins when injected into patients. Sick cells appear as white fluorescent spots during eye examination.

In clinical trials, the pioneering diagnostic — developed by researchers at the University College London (UCL) and the Western Eye Hospital in England — allowed doctors to see individual nerve cell death in the back of the eye.

“Detecting glaucoma early is vital as symptoms are not always obvious. Although detection has been improving, most patients have lost a third of vision by the time they are diagnosed,” said led researcher Professor Francesca Cordeiro of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.

“Now, for the first time, we have been able to show individual cell death and detect the earliest signs of glaucoma. While we cannot cure the disease, our test means treatment can start before symptoms begin.”

Glaucoma affects an estimated 60 million people in the world, with one in 10 suffering total sight loss in both the eyes.

Initial clinical trials were carried out on a small number of glaucoma patients and compared with tests on healthy people. The initial clinical trials established the safety of the test for patients, according to a study published in the journal BRAIN.

The researchers believe the test has potential for early diagnosis of other degenerative neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis.

“In the future, the test could also be used to diagnose other neuro-degenerative diseases,” Cordeiro said.

Oxidants combat aging to make you live longer

This may come as a real shock to you. Free radicals - also known as oxidants produced by our bodies as we process oxygen - act on a molecular mechanism that, in other circumstances, tells a cell to kill itself!

In other words, free radicals actually promote longevity, research says.

"People believe that free radicals are damaging and cause aging but the so-called 'free radical theory of aging' is incorrect," claimed Siegfried Hekimi, a professor in at Canada-based McGill University's department of biology.

"Free radical production increases during aging because free radicals actually combat - not cause - aging. In fact, in our model organism, we can elevate free radical generation and thus induce a substantially longer life," Hekimi explained.

Programmed cell death, or apoptosis, is a process by which damaged cells commit suicide in a variety of situations: to avoid becoming cancerous, to avoid inducing auto-immune disease, or to kill off viruses that have invaded the cell.

The main molecular mechanism by which this happens is well conserved in all animals, but was first discovered in C. elegans - a discovery that resulted in a Nobel Prize.

The McGill researchers found that this same mechanism, when stimulated in the right way by free radicals, actually reinforces the cell's defenses and increases its lifespan.

It also means that apoptosis signaling can be used to stimulate mechanisms that slow down aging, researchers noted in a study published in the journal Cell.
