Vitamin D regulates calcium in intestine differently than previously thought

A Rutgers study has discovered that vitamin D regulates calcium in a section of the intestine that previously was thought not to have played a key role.

The findings have important implications on how bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, may disrupt calcium regulation.

In a healthy person, the body absorbs calcium to maintain strong bones and perform other important functions like helping muscles move and nerves carry messages between the brain and body parts.

Vitamin D is critical for this calcium absorption from the intestine and for the function of the intestine.

The study, published in the journal Molecular and Cellular Biology, highlights the importance of the distal segments of the intestine - including the colon - in vitamin D regulation of calcium and bone calcification.

Previously, this regulation was thought to only occur in the proximal intestine, the first section of the intestine immediately beyond the stomach.

From the study, researchers also learned that transporter of manganese -- an essential element that plays a role in many cellular processes -- was one of the genes most induced by vitamin D in both the proximal and distal intestine.

The study's lead author, Sylvia Christakos, a professor in the Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, says these findings suggest that vitamin D plays other roles as well.

"The findings suggest that vitamin D may have a role not only in calcium absorption but also in the cellular regulation of other essential ions and in the function of intestinal stem cells," she said.

This research may lead to new strategies that can compensate for calcium malabsorption and increase the efficacy of intestinal calcium uptake to minimize bone loss due to bariatric surgery, small bowel resection, or reduced calcium absorption after menopause or due to ageing.

How to recognise Computer vision syndrome, remedies to save your eye health

Some people chose this as a way of life while some to play games but too much stress on sensitive eyes would lead to no good but pain.

Learn about the disadvantages of prolonged screen time and why prevention is better than cure.
Computer Vision Syndrome is dangerous and can lead to various health casualties in the long run. Software engineers, business professionals, hackers, gamers you name it but one thing definitely unites them and that is long durations of sitting in front of a screen.
Now, this can happen due to quite a few reasons.
  • Overuse of eye muscles
  • Frequent pupil movement
  • Previous eye problems
  • Dry eyes
  • Ageing
Now, before jumping into conclusions, the need to understand the importance of the eyes is prime. Our eyes fall under the 5 important sense organs we have. The power of sight can be considered a gift and we should at all time try to protect this privilege of ours. Imagine going blind for a day? Seems pretty impossible right?
So why not be careful about its betterment and try to take up measures to prevent a casualty?
Although the question remains. Do I already have Computer Vision Syndrome?
Possible Symptoms
  • Asthenopia
  • Headache
  • Sore Eyes
  • Blurred Vision
  • Neck pain
If you or your family member has been experiencing these symptoms lately, a diagnosis by an optometrist would be very necessary. Ignoring the same may lead to severe problems that may have an adverse effect on your health status.

Serious diseases should also not be ignored in these cases, for example, the likes of Glaucoma is very much possible due to CVS. The high pressure created on your eyes to view content or object that has a high contrast rate can cause Glaucoma. Intraocular pressure is what determines the pressure inside our eyes and too much pressure can lead to vision loss as well.

How to take precautions to avoid Computer Vision Syndrome?
Avoiding CVS is simple and doesn't require you to be a superhero to be the prevent the same. Changing regular screen time habits and understanding the need to protect your eyes would be our first step towards a cure.
Some other useful prevention methods are mentioned below which you are free to refer to.

Eye Drops
Medical Industry has a bunch of eye drops to offer that provide temporary solutions to our immediate problems. They are effective and easy to use. If you experience back eye strain or redness of eyes due to long office hours or a group gaming session, you can consult your doctor and make use of these eye drops that are easily available at any convenience store nearby if the opthalmologist prescribes it.
Soothe the strained eyes
Cucumber is cool and dropping in a couple of them over your eyes while you relax is also an easy hack to less strained eyes. Cucumber contains a lot of water in it and has hydrating benefits. Beauty professionals have always used this as a common hack to relaxation and are a common way of getting out those ugly dark spots around your eyes. If you are allergic to a cucumber which no one or whatever the cause may be, you can use a regular wet tissue or any eye pad if you are trying to go really fancy.

Switch your screen.
High contrast and low-quality display can also be a factor that leads to depleted eye quality. As we strive towards modernisation, certain companies have started to come up with good quality displays which go easy on your eyes and designed to produce better images while keeping your eyes safe at the same time.
So do not let an old and outdated display hamper your eyes, rather go for an extra buck and prevent further problems.

Alter your work routine
By this, we don't mean that you stop working or take early retirement. Rather, we ask you not to sit continuously in front of the screen and take breaks at regular intervals to let your eyes rest. You should always maintain a safe distance of 20-40 inches from the screen.
Following these simple precautionary methods can help you take care of your eyes and will bring longevity to your sight.

Ageing hinders development of cancer

Age can pose as a hindrance to development and further progression of cancer cells, a new study has found.

The findings of this study published  recently, has found that human ageing processes may hinder cancer development.

Ageing is one of the biggest risk factors for cancer. However, the biological mechanisms behind this link are still unclear.

Each cell in the human body is specialised to carry out certain tasks and will only need to express certain genes. Gene expression is the process by which specific genes are activated to produce a required protein.

Gene expression analyses have been used to study cancer and ageing, but only a few studies have investigated the relationship between gene expression changes in these two processes.

In an effort to better understand the biological mechanisms researchers compared how genes differentially expressed with age and genes differentially expressed in cancer among 9 human tissues.

Normally, a healthy cell can divide in a controlled manner. In contrast, a senescent or ' sleeping 'cells have lost their ability to divide.

As we age, the number of senescent cells in our bodies increase, which then drive many age-related processes and diseases.

Genetic mutations triggered by things such as UV exposure can sometimes cause cells to replicate uncontrollably- and uncontrolled cell growth is cancer.

Researcher found that in most of the tissues examined, ageing and cancer gene expression ' surprisingly' changed in the opposite direction.

These overlapping gene sets were related to several processes, mainly cell cycle and the immune system. Moreover, cellular senescence changed in the same direction as ageing and in the opposite direction of cancer signatures.

Researchers believe that the changes in ageing and cellular senescence might relate to a decrease in cell proliferation, while cancer changes shift towards an increase in cell division.

" One of the reasons our bodies have evolved to have senescent cells is to suppress cancers. But then it seems that senescent cells accumulate in aged human tissues and may contribute to ageing and degeneration.

Ageing tissues may hinder cell proliferation and consequently cancer, the study author added.

However, an alternative explanation comes from evolutionary biology. First author explained, " aged tissue might actually be a better environment for a rogue cancer cell to proliferate because the cancer cell will have an evolutionary advantage."

Why do women get cellulite

Body ‘issues’ are often a major reason behind women being diffident. And the society with its construct of ‘oh-so-spotless’ skin gets to many. Yet, the media has been blessed with some women who are flaunting their true selves, making others understand that their body is totally their business.

One such issue seems to be cellulite. But what causes cellulite? There have been countless theories on the causes of cellulite, right from the extremely absurd ones (like ‘chocolate’ causes it) to weird ones (like ‘leggings’ could have to do with it). A new study took into consideration these and a few other spurious myths to decipher realistic reasons for women having cellulite.

The best part is, claims of cellulite being caused by sedentary lifestyles and poor diets have been proven false. “The theory that cellulite is caused by trapped toxins is an internet myth,” said cellulite specialist. “Men are actually less careful with their diet, alcohol and smoking. So if someone had to have lots of cellulite because of high consumption of toxins, that would have to be men, not women,” said the cellulite specialist.

He explained that, “Women develop cellulite because they have weaker connective tissue and larger fat cells, due to the effect of female hormones. Men, on the other hand, have much stronger connective tissue and much less subcutaneous fat, so they normally do not develop cellulite. The combination of larger fat lobules pushing the skin upwards and less collagen anchors that offer little resistance to the upward pressure of fat, gives the appearance of cellulite.” As he exemplifies,  cellulite is a little bit sexist.

Women have larger fat cells thanks to their capability to give birth. Pushing a baby out of your body and feeding it need some solid energy. So the body stores back-up food reserves for possible lactation in hips and thighs.

A Dr. said, “Increasing the fat percentage in your body will certainly not help with cellulite occurrence.” To fight cellulite, “obviously you have to reduce the size of the fat lobules and increase skin collagen,” he said, “which, in practice, means more everyday movement, more exercise, less calorie intake [there goes your favourite snack] and more collagen-boosting foods, such as vegetables, berries, herbs and lean protein.” Also, “avoiding hormonal contraception can also prevent further deterioration of connective tissue and enlargement of fat lobules," he suggested.

Ageing leads to breakdown of collagen, and is thus responsible for cellulite formation. The skin tends to lose elasticity with age.“Poor blood circulation does not help either,” said the Dr. “It results is less nutrition getting through, leading to the skin weakening and allowing fat cells to push through. Nicotine in cigarettes result in poor blood circulation, for example. And, too much sun exposure ages the skin prematurely weakening the skin’s elasticity making cellulite more obvious,” he added.

Neem Tree Oil Is the Perfect Remedy for Great Hair and Skin

Neem tree oil is commonly harvested from the neem tree (sometimes called an Indian lilac or by its technical name Azadirachta indica). It is grown in India and other tropical regions. It is dark colored and smells like a fusion between garlic and peanuts. This healing tree oil is an important part of Ayurveda, an ancient Indian medicine practice. As a natural ingredient, it is also anti-bacterial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal. It can treat many skin and hair problems.
1. Protects skin from aging
Since neem tree oil is rich in antioxidants applying it to your skin can protect it from environmental damage. The oil’s abundance of carotenoids can prevent free radicals from harming your skin. Neem tree oil is also rich in fatty acids and vitamins, which can improve your skin’s elasticity. This helps with smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.
2. Clears up spotty skin
Neem tree oil can reduce the redness and inflammation caused by acne and pimples. Neem tree oil eradicates the bacteria, and the concentrated fatty acids prevent acne scars from forming. Similarly, applying a face mask made with neem tree oil can help get rid of any skin impurities and can help tighten your pores.
3. Relieves eczema
Eczema is largely a genetic disorder which causes skin abrasions, swelling and redness. Applying neem tree oil can help this disorder without having to take strong medication. The ample amounts of fatty acids and vitamin E in the oil penetrate the skin’s outer layer. This provides moisture and thereby restores the protective barrier of the skin, while the antiseptic properties protect the skin from infection. There are compounds of nimbin and nimbidin in the oil, which reduce swelling and relieve redness.
Neem Tree Oil
4. Fights fungi
Fungal infections are more widespread than most people realize. Common ones include nail fungus, ringworm and athlete’s foot and can pester one no end. Because neem tree oil is a powerful antifungal agent applying it to infected areas can help eliminate these skin conditions quickly and naturally.
5. Remedies dryness
Neem tree oil is a natural skin conditioner and can help with dryness and keeping your skin moisturized. The plentiful vitamins and minerals repair any prolonged skin dryness and it’s a common ingredient in moisturizing products.
For Your Hair
1. Treats head lice
Using neem tree oil is a safe alternative to the more toxic anti-lice shampoos. Applying neem tree oil won’t irritate or itch your scalp while effectively killing off nits and lice. Leave neem tree oil on your head and hair overnight, and comb out the lice with a lice comb the next morning.
2. Promotes hair growth
Hair thinning and shedding can be caused by medication, pollution and stress. Neem tree oil has been found to be effective for people suffering from this type of hair loss. The minerals and vitamins in neem tree oil promote hair growth and can even improve the quality of your hair.
3. Treats split ends and frizzy hair
When your hair is weak and develops split ends it can cause hair growth to become stunted. The results are unmanageable and bushy hair. This solution also effectively helps you manage frizzy hair. Neem tree oil can make your hair more adaptable and provides a rich source of moisture, protection and works to repair damaged hair cuticles. It also makes your hair shine, and look smooth and hydrated. The best way to apply the oil is by adding a few drops to your regular shampoo. You can also apply a few drops directly to the scalp.
4. Treats dandruff
Using neem tree oil shampoo or a dandruff shampoo with neem tree oil can prevent and get rid of dandruff. The oil protects your scalp skin, preventing skin from shedding and maintain your scalp’s PH level. The oil’s rich deposits of vitamins can strengthen your hair follicles roots too.
