Core- strengthening exercises every girl should do

Strong abdominal and back muscles are essential for doing everyday tasks, like lifting your 20-pound toddler or picking up heavy bags, not to forget preventing an achy back or maintaining good posture at your desk.

Core muscles act as a central link in a chain connecting our upper and lower body. Thus, weak core muscles can impair how well our arms and legs function.

Here are some of the exercises recommended by a Physiotherapist  that every girl should do to keep their core strong.

Transverse Abdominus Activation
Contract your lower abdominals as if you were trying to lift one leg from the table. Initiate the movement but do not lift foot greater than 1 inch from the table. Repeat opposite side. Perform 15 repetitions 2 sets.

Sahrmann Lower Abdominal Exercise
Start with both knees bent, and your feet on the table. Tighten your abdominal muscles, like you are drawing your mid-section to your belly button. Lift 1 leg to a 90-degree hip flexion position, then the second leg to the same position (just like Level 1). Touch the first heel to the table, slide it along the table until the leg is straight, return to the 90-degree position. Repeat with the second leg (touch, slide along the table, slide back). Lower 1 leg to the starting position, then the second leg. Do 10 reps and 3 - 4 sets.

Table Top with Marching
Begin in the table-top position with lower abdominal muscles engaged, low back flat against the ground (90 degrees at your hips and knees). Then alternate tapping your heels to the ground one at a time. Between each tap, return to the starting position before alternating to the opposite leg. Tapping the ground with each heel once is one repetition. Do 10 reps and 3 - 4 sets.

Straight leg press up- Rotation
While lying on your back, cross your legs and lift them straight up. Next, flatten your low back so that it thrusts your legs a few inches upwards towards the ceiling. While maintaining this position with your low back flat on the floor, slowly rock your legs side-to-side as shown. Do 10 reps and 3 - 4 sets.

Bad posture while sitting, standing, walking, or in a static position can lead to stiffness. Bad posture can also affect other parts of the spine, such as the middle and low back. Backaches –Eat Grapes

In a study conducted at the University of Ohio, researchers found that one cup of fresh grapes per day can help improve blood flow to the damaged tissue in the back, sometimes within as little three hours. The spine is highly dependent on the nutrients and oxygen in the blood, making eating grapes a highly beneficial act.

10 daily habits to stop back pain

Although determining the cause of back pain can be complicated, preventing pain is actually quite simple. It's all about relieving pressure, reducing strain, protecting the spine, and strengthening the muscles. Simply changing a few daily habits could make the difference in maintaining a healthy, pain-free back for the short and long term.

1. Sleep With a Pillow Under Your Knees

Elevating your legs slightly relieves pressure on your back as you sleep. Sleeping on your back puts an estimated 55 pounds of pressure on your spine. By placing a pillow under your knees, you can cut that pressure in half.

2. Work Your Core

The numerous health benefits of exercise are well known, but a regular strength training routine that focuses on the core muscles of the body can also help reduce your risk of back-related incidents, such as strains and muscle spasms. For a stronger, more flexible back, try to incorporate some sort of back and abdominal strengthening exercise into your workout at least twice a week.

3. Up Your Calcium and Vitamin D Intake

Strong bones can help prevent osteoporosis, one of the most common causes of back pain later in life, particularly for women. Keep the bones in your spine strong by consuming plenty of calcium and vitamin D, whether in milk, yogurt, leafy greens, or vitamin supplements. However, always consult you doctor before taking any kind of supplement.

4. Change Your Shoes

Comfortable, low-heeled shoes are best bets for back pain prevention as they reduce the strain on the back while standing. Sorry ladies—pumps with less than a one-inch heel are the best bet for your back.

5. Straighten Up

Good posture isn't just a way to look more proper. It protects the intricate pieces of your spine to keep them functioning and healthy. Bad posture puts strain and stress on the back and, over time, can actually change the architecture of the spine itself. Avoid rounding your shoulders, slouching, or bending sideways while standing.

6. Don't Slump Over Your Desk

When sitting in your office chair, use the same good posture techniques you would use while standing. Because many of us spend hours each day sitting down, it is absolutely critical that you maintain good posture and support your back. Choose a quality chair that provides firm support in the lower back area, and make sure your knees are a little higher than your hips when you sit.

7. Mingle

Whether you are at an office party or a bar for happy hour, avoid sitting in an awkward position or standing in one place. Instead, move around the room. This prevents undue pressure on the spine, a result of standing in one place for too long.

8. Put Out That Cigarette

We all know smoking is a serious health risk, but numerous studies have found that smokers are also more likely than nonsmokers to experience back pain, particularly later in life. One reason for the higher risk is that nicotine restricts the blood flow to the spine's disks, and this can cause them to dry out, crack, or rupture. Smoking also reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood thus reducing nourishment for the muscles and tendons in the back. An unhealthy, weak back is more vulnerable to accidental strains and pulls that cause back pain.

9. Lighten Your Load

Back pain is frequently caused by improper or heavy lifting, but it doesn't happen only to those lifting heavy boxes on the job. Carrying a bulky laptop bag, suitcase, camera, or load of groceries could also cause a sudden strain on the back. Whenever possible, take some weight off your shoulders by carrying less, distributing the weight to both sides of the body, or shifting the weight from shoulder to shoulder to give each side a rest. For heavier loads, such as bags of groceries or boxes of files, consider using a rolling cart or bag with wheels.

10. Stretch

Standing, sitting, or lying down in one place for an extended amount of time may be a necessary part of life, but it is not healthy for your back. Relieve the strain of the day whenever you can by getting up, walking around, and doing some simple stretches. This will help keep the blood flowing through the bones and muscles of your back and ease away any strains or aches caused by inactivity.

12 symptoms of kidney disease you shouldn’t ignore

Most people are not aware of the fact that kidney diseases can be silent killers. They may not show any symptoms for a long time till the situation becomes critical. (Why is it silent?) Even young people are now prone to it. It is important to recognize the symptoms of kidney diseases to catch them early. There are many reasons why kidney disease is caused. The most common causes are diabetes and hypertension. Even an unhealthy lifestyle with a high calorie diet, certain medicines. lots of soft drinks and sugar consumption can also cause kidney damage. Here is a list of twelve symptoms which could indicate something is wrong with your kidney:
Changes in your urinary function: The first symptom of kidney disease is changes in the amount and frequency of your urination. There may be an increase or decrease in amount and/or its frequency, especially at night. It may also look more dark coloured. You may feel the urge to urinate but are unable to do so when you get to the restroom.
Difficulty or pain during voiding: Sometimes you have difficulty or feel pressure or pain while voiding. Urinary tract infections may cause symptoms such as pain or burning during urination. When these infections spread to the kidneys they may cause fever and pain in your back.
Blood in the urine: This is a symptom of kidney disease which is a definite cause for concern. There may be other reasons, but it is advisable to visit your doctor in case you notice it.
Swelling: Kidneys remove wastes and extra fluid from the body. When they are unable to do so, this extra fluid will build up causing swelling in your hands, feet, ankles and/or your face. Read more about swelling in the feet.
Extreme fatigue and generalised weakness: Your kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin which helps make red blood cells that carry oxygen. In kidney disease lower levels of erythropoietin causes decreased red blood cells in your body resulting in anaemia.  There is decreased oxygen delivery to cells causing generalised weakness and extreme fatigue. Read more about the reasons for fatigue.
Dizziness & Inability to concentrate: Anaemia associated with kidney disease also depletes your brain of oxygen which may cause dizziness, trouble with concentration, etc.
Feeling cold all the time: If you have kidney disease you may feel cold even when in a warm surrounding due to anaemia. Pyelonephritis (kidney infection) may cause fever with chills.
Skin rashes and itching: Kidney failure causes waste build-up in your blood. This can causes severe itching and skin rashes.
Ammonia breath and metallic taste: Kidney failure increases level of urea in the blood (uraemia). This urea is broken down to ammonia in the saliva causing urine-like bad breath called ammonia breath. It is also usually associated with an unpleasant metallic taste (dysgeusia) in the mouth.
Nausea and vomiting: The build-up of waste products in your blood in kidney disease can also cause nausea and vomiting. Read 13 causes for nausea.
Shortness of breath: Kidney disease causes fluid to build up in the lungs. And also, anaemia, a common side-effect of kidney disease, starves your body of oxygen. You may have trouble catching your breath due to these factors.
Pain in the back or sides: Some cases of kidney disease may cause pain. You may feel a severe cramping pain that spreads from the lower back into the groin if there is a kidney stone in the ureter. Pain may also be related to polycystic kidney disease, an inherited kidney disorder, which causes many fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys. Interstitial cystitis, a chronic inflammation of the bladder wall, causes chronic pain and discomfort.
It is important to identify kidney disease early because in most cases the damage in the kidneys can’t be undone. To reduce your chances of getting severe kidney problems, see your doctor when you observe one or more of the above symptoms. If caught early, kidney disease can be treated very effectively.
