Fathers Have More Influence in A Daughter’s Life Than Mothers

Normally one will think, rather I too thought that I'm greatly influenced by mother. May be in olden times, father didn't take much responsibilities- like changing the diaper, giving bath, making the child sleep, like the present day dads, who take equal responsibilities in rearing their kids.

However, recent studies indicate that this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Girls not only benefit from having their dad around, but they also need their father to develop emotionally properly.

Why Dads Matter Emotionally

According to this study,  girls who have good relationships with their fathers are less likely to develop anxiety and depression, plus are better at handling everyday stress. They’re also much more comfortable talking about their feelings, and that ability to be open about how they feel can help prepare them to have fulfilling relationships with others in the future.
Things like personal values, self-image, relationships, sexuality, and a feeling of control over their own lives are other things that dads help shape for their daughters. When a father forms a deep, healthy relationship with his daughter, he helps her create a positive self-image and allows her to establish a feeling of control over her life that will enable her to have the confidence to succeed.

Why Dads Matter Practically

In addition to having a huge impact emotionally, dads also have a profound effect on the financial and even physical health of their daughters. According to this study, girls that have a father who’s involved from the beginning are more likely to have enough to eat and are in better physical health than those who have uninvolved or absent fathers.
Fathers also help to provide financial stability for their daughters which, when combined with good physical and emotional health, allows them to be much more likely to succeed and be able to further themselves financially.

Involved from the Beginning

The earlier fathers are involved with meeting their daughter’s needs, the stronger the bond between them is, which leads to all the benefits above. Earlier involvement of fathers is something relatively new, especially when you consider that 75 years ago, dads couldn’t even be in the room when their daughters were born.
Now, there are more opportunities for men to be involved with their daughters right from the beginning. They can change diapers, and through extracting breast milk or using formula, they can even be included in the feeding of their little girls. Rocking them to sleep at the end of the day is another way that fathers can build a substantial bond right from the start.

Influence of Media

Unfortunately, even with these greater opportunities for involvement, there are a lot of negative influences in the media that some men may find difficult to overcome. Consider nearly every television show that’s come out in the last 20 years and how fathers are portrayed: bumbling idiots that know nothing about women. It’s important, however, for fathers to recognize that these stereotypes don’t have to be followed, and are simply poor portrayals of what a father should be.

In today’s society where there are significantly more single moms than in the past, there is a tendency to believe that a woman can raise a child – especially a daughter – on her own. However, recent studies indicate that this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Girls not only benefit from having their dad around, but they also need their father to develop emotionally properly.

Role of Moms

It is important to note that although the role of a dad is certainly important in the life of a girl, this is not to diminish the role that moms have when raising daughters. Moms can provide valuable information and advice about what it means to be a woman and are the ones that will guide their daughters through milestones like puberty, menstruation, and interest in boys.

For men reading this who may be concerned about the relationship they currently have with their daughter – perhaps because they weren’t involved in the early years – there’s still hope, as it’s never too late to form a close, healthy relationship with their daughters. It may take more work, but it’s probably worth it to give their daughters a better chance to succeed in life.

Early exposure to chmeicals in toothpaste, make-up advances girls’ puberty

Girls exposed to chemicals commonly found in toothpaste, makeup, soap and other personal care products before birth may hit puberty at an early age, finds a new study.

The study found that in-vitro exposure to chemicals in personal care products such as phthalates — found in scented products like perfumes, soaps and shampoos — parabens — used as preservatives in cosmetics — and phenols — which include triclosan — advances pubertal age in girls.

Early puberty in girls have been linked with increased risk of mental illness, breast and ovarian cancer; and testicular cancer in boys.

However, the association was not observed in boys.

“We know that some of the things we put on our bodies are getting into our bodies, either because they pass through the skin or we breathe them in or we inadvertently ingest them,” said a Prof.

“We wanted to know what effect exposure to these chemicals has during certain critical windows of development, which include before birth and during puberty,” the Prof. added.

For the study,  the team included 338 children — 159 boys and 179 girls.

The findings showed that more than 90 per cent of urine samples of both mothers and children showed detectable concentrations of phthalates, parabens and phenols.

However, there was an exception of triclosan which was present in approximately 70 per cent of the samples.

Every time the concentrations of diethyl phthalate and triclosan in the mother’s urine doubled, pubertal development in girls advanced approximately by one month.

In addition, girls who had higher concentrations of parabens in their urine at age nine also experienced puberty at younger ages.

However, it is unclear if the chemicals were causing the shift, or if girls who reached puberty earlier were more likely to start using personal care products at younger ages, the researchers noted, adding the need for more studies.

Girls With Diabetes May Be At A Higher Risk Of Irregular Periods

According to a study, girls diagnosed with type-2 diabetes have a higher frequency of menstrual irregularities. Menstrual irregularities may have a variety of causes, including pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, infections, diseases, trauma and certain medications. Adult women with obesity are known to be at a risk for menstrual disorders like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can lead to the development of diabetes or other metabolic problems. However, the reproductive function in girls with youth-onset type-2 diabetes.

According to the researchers, it is important for girls with type-2 diabetes to be assessed for menstrual problems. Infrequent periods can be associated with heavy and painful periods, increased risk for fatty liver disease, fertility problems and long-term increased risk for endometrial cancer. The researchers performed a secondary analysis of the data from the Treatment Options for type-2 diabetes in Youth study, a research study to find the best way to treat young people with type-2 diabetes.

The researchers found that more than 20 percent of girls in the study had irregular periods. Many of those girls also had high testosterone levels, pointing to PCOS as an underlying cause.

Diabetes is a lifestyle disease that can be regulated and maintained with the right diet. Here are some foods that may help keep your blood sugar levels in check.
1. Beetroot
Beetroot are delicious and satisfying; they are also low on carbohydrate content. This pink veggie is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, fibre and phytonutrients, all of which help in managing diabetes. Natural sugars in beetroot don't get converted into glucose in the body too quickly, which makes them good for diabetics.
2. Pumpkin seeds
A handful of pumpkin seeds help fight cravings for fatty and sugary foods. They are rich in iron and unsaturated fats and help in suppressing your appetite.
3. Flaxseed
Flaxseed contains large amounts of an insoluble fibre called lignin. Flaxseeds help in reducing the chances of heart complications and also the risk of strokes linked with diabetes.
4. Mixed nuts
Nuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and have low glycaemic index scores. The essential oils and overall nutrient content of nuts helps in lowering diabetic inflammation, blood sugar and LDL levels.
5. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are rich in lycopene that are great for your heart. They also tend to reduce blood pressure and the risk of heart complications associated with diabetes.

Core- strengthening exercises every girl should do

Strong abdominal and back muscles are essential for doing everyday tasks, like lifting your 20-pound toddler or picking up heavy bags, not to forget preventing an achy back or maintaining good posture at your desk.

Core muscles act as a central link in a chain connecting our upper and lower body. Thus, weak core muscles can impair how well our arms and legs function.

Here are some of the exercises recommended by a Physiotherapist  that every girl should do to keep their core strong.

Transverse Abdominus Activation
Contract your lower abdominals as if you were trying to lift one leg from the table. Initiate the movement but do not lift foot greater than 1 inch from the table. Repeat opposite side. Perform 15 repetitions 2 sets.

Sahrmann Lower Abdominal Exercise
Start with both knees bent, and your feet on the table. Tighten your abdominal muscles, like you are drawing your mid-section to your belly button. Lift 1 leg to a 90-degree hip flexion position, then the second leg to the same position (just like Level 1). Touch the first heel to the table, slide it along the table until the leg is straight, return to the 90-degree position. Repeat with the second leg (touch, slide along the table, slide back). Lower 1 leg to the starting position, then the second leg. Do 10 reps and 3 - 4 sets.

Table Top with Marching
Begin in the table-top position with lower abdominal muscles engaged, low back flat against the ground (90 degrees at your hips and knees). Then alternate tapping your heels to the ground one at a time. Between each tap, return to the starting position before alternating to the opposite leg. Tapping the ground with each heel once is one repetition. Do 10 reps and 3 - 4 sets.

Straight leg press up- Rotation
While lying on your back, cross your legs and lift them straight up. Next, flatten your low back so that it thrusts your legs a few inches upwards towards the ceiling. While maintaining this position with your low back flat on the floor, slowly rock your legs side-to-side as shown. Do 10 reps and 3 - 4 sets.

Girls may inherit ovarian cancer gene from fathers

Scientists have found a gene responsible for ovarian cancer that can be passed down from fathers to their daughters.
The study found that genes on the X-chromosome get potentially passed down through the father to his daughter, thus increasing the risk of ovarian cancer in girls.

A mutation on the X-chromosome may also advance ovarian cancer's age of onset by more than six years.

"Our study may explain why we find families with multiple affected daughters: because a dad's chromosomes determine the sex of his children, all of his daughters have to carry the same X-chromosome genes," said an Assistant Professor.

The study,  stated that the genetic mutation inherited from the paternal grandmothers were also associated with higher rates of prostate cancer in fathers and sons as well.

The researchers collected information about pairs of granddaughters and grandmothers and sequenced portions of the X-chromosome from 186 women affected by cancer.

The results proposed that a gene on the X-chromosome may contribute to a woman's risk of developing ovarian cancer, independently of other known susceptibility genes, such as the BRCA genes.

This observation suggests that there may be many cases of seemingly sporadic ovarian cancer that are actually inherited, and may lead to improved cancer screening and better genetic risk assessment.

However, future studies will be needed to confirm the identity and function of this gene.
"What we have to do next is make sure we have the right gene by sequencing more families. This finding has sparked a lot of discussion within our group about how to find these X-linked families," the Prof. said.

"It's an all-or-none kind of pattern: A family with three daughters who all have ovarian cancer is more likely to be driven by inherited X mutations than by BRCA mutations," the Prof. noted.

9 Signs of ADHD That Are Different In Girls than In Boys

In the past, ADHD was perceived as naughty and wild behavior in boys, but it is now known that the behavior characteristic of such disorders has a biological basis and is not the result of just childhood whims. Moreover, contrary to what was previously thought, according to a study published in 2014, girls have the same chances of developing ADHD as boys, but its symptoms are expressed differently.

As a result, it is difficult to diagnose women with ADHD, and many girls who live with these disorders feel confused and insecure about what to do with themselves. In order for you to know if there is any reason to suspect ADHD in your daughters, it is important that you recognize the 9 symptoms that are expressed differently in them then in boys.

1. Distracted behavior

One of the revealing signs of attention deficit disorder is the inability to focus on tasks, speech, and other daily activities. This sign is common for both boys and girls, but girls find it harder to focus on what is in front of them and concentrate on what they need to do. This increased distraction makes them daydream, become introverted, and have difficulty maintaining concentration during school.

2. Impulsivity is reduced

"ADHD children tend to behave impulsively, meaning they act without thinking about the results," says an ADHD specialist. "In contrast, girls with ADHD often do not exhibit such behavior and do not behave in an uncalculated way, which often makes it difficult to know that they are indeed dealing with this problem.

3. Minor disturbances in school

Boys, especially in elementary and middle school, who cope with ADHD tend to stand out in class in terms of their presence and character. On the other hand, girls with disorders of this kind behave in the opposite way and are shy, closed and do not express themselves in any way. This behavior, which is not usually associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is characteristic of ADHD- girls and their lack of participation in the classroom is a sign of such a disorder.

4. Decreased hyperactivity

One of the symptoms of ADHD is hyperactive behavior, i.e., difficulty sitting in one place for a while and wanting to move at all times. This is true for ADHD among boys, but girls are less likely to have this type of behavior. Therefore, other suspicious signs should alert your attention to the existence of ADHD in girls, as hyperactivity is not one of the telltale signs.

5. Feelings of shame and lack of self-confidence

Every parent wants his child to have self-confidence that will enable them to succeed in life and to conquer various life struggles, but some children find it difficult to do so. This is especially true with girls who cope with attention deficit disorders that make it difficult for them to concentrate and causes them to experience difficulties in school and in their personal life. As a result, girls with ADHD tend to blame themselves for the difficulties they experience, which causes them to lose their self-confidence and to be ashamed of themselves.

6. Feelings of isolation

Children with ADHD struggle to make friends, but girls have more social problems than boys. In today's society, although it is more modern and progressive than it used to be, girls are expected to absorb social clues and read situations as they are because of their supposed innate sensitivity, but girls who suffer from ADHD find this difficult. When they fail repeatedly to decode social cues and codes, these girls develop social problems and often become isolated or have very few friends.

7. Hypersensitivity

Many children with ADHD struggle with regulating and controlling their emotions, and so, intense feelings and disorders of this kind go hand in hand. From this common point between boys and girls with ADHD, girls experience hypersensitivity as a result of ADHD, which causes them to have increased feelings in a myriad of areas. The difficulty of emotional regulation causes them to be overwhelmed by feelings that can erupt in unexpected moments and interfere in different situations.

8. Constant talking

According to a Dr., girls with ADHD tend to be chatty because they can’t recognize the social cues that tell them to stop talking and give others a chance to weigh in. In addition to talking incessantly, girls with attention deficit disorder also tend to interject while others speak, and are therefore perceived as deviant or even insolent when the existence of their disorder is unknown.

9. Sense of depression and anxiety

Girls with ADHD are at an increased risk of depression and anxiety, especially in adolescence, so it is important to be alert to this condition. In addition, young girls and adolescents with ADHD tend to be perfectionists and are generally high achievers usually adopting a habit of over-concentration, which ultimately creates so much stress that makes it difficult for them to get through their day peacefully.
Conclusion:
Diagnosing ADHD in girls can be more challenging than boys because this problem is expressed in different ways. If you notice that your daughters are showing some or all of the signs above, you may want to seek expert advice to see if they have ADHD and if so, help them cope with the challenges they face more easily.
