Attention women! Here’s is why you need to be careful while selecting your soaps and toothpaste

Women exposed to triclosan — a chemical widely used as an antibacterial in soaps, tooth pastes and other personal care products — are more likely to develop osteoporosis, a study has found. Triclosan is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that has been banned by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from over-the-counter hand sanitiser in recent years.

The research is the first of its kinds to investigate the association between triclosan exposure with bone mineral density and osteoporosis.

A person can be exposed to triclosan via consumer products — like soaps, hand sanitisers, toothpaste, and mouthwash — and contaminated water.

“Laboratory studies have demonstrated that triclosan may have potential to adversely affect the bone mineral density in cell lines or in animals,” said a researcher.

“However, little is known about the relationship between triclosan and human bone health,” he said. The researchers analysed data from 1,848 women to determine the link between triclosan and bone health. They found women with higher levels of triclosan in their urine were more likely to have bone issues.

Using moisturisers, lipstick during pregnancy can permanently stunt child's growth

Using personal care products like moisturisers and lipstick - rich in toxic plastic chemical - during pregnancy can affect your baby's motor skills in adolescence, warns research. The study showed that maternal exposure to phthalates - plasticiser chemicals - in late pregnancy could have long-lasting adverse effects on motor function in children. Phthalate exposures likely occurred when expecting mothers and their children unknowingly ingested small amounts of products like lipstick or plastic food containers or packaging or have absorbed these chemicals through their skin.

"The study adds to the substantial body of evidence on the health risks of phthalates for children, which also includes elevated risk for asthma and cognitive issues," said a Prof.

As lower scores on measures of motor development have been associated with more problems in cognitive, socio-emotional functioning and behaviour, the results, published in the journal, have implications related to overall child development.

For the study, researchers included 209 children and measured levels of phthalates and their metabolites in urine collected from women during late pregnancy and from their children at ages three, five, and seven.

Children with even subtle motor problems often have difficulty participating in daily activities of childhood, particularly sports. They may also experience low self-worth and self-esteem, high rates of anxiety and depression, as well as behavioural disorders, such as ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), according to the Prof.

"To the extent possible, expecting mothers should minimise their exposures to products like lipstick and moisturisers that contain these chemicals by paying attention to product labels," the Prof. suggested.

In addition, policymakers and manufacturers should consider steps to limit or eliminate the use of these chemicals, the study noted.

Early exposure to chmeicals in toothpaste, make-up advances girls’ puberty

Girls exposed to chemicals commonly found in toothpaste, makeup, soap and other personal care products before birth may hit puberty at an early age, finds a new study.

The study found that in-vitro exposure to chemicals in personal care products such as phthalates — found in scented products like perfumes, soaps and shampoos — parabens — used as preservatives in cosmetics — and phenols — which include triclosan — advances pubertal age in girls.

Early puberty in girls have been linked with increased risk of mental illness, breast and ovarian cancer; and testicular cancer in boys.

However, the association was not observed in boys.

“We know that some of the things we put on our bodies are getting into our bodies, either because they pass through the skin or we breathe them in or we inadvertently ingest them,” said a Prof.

“We wanted to know what effect exposure to these chemicals has during certain critical windows of development, which include before birth and during puberty,” the Prof. added.

For the study,  the team included 338 children — 159 boys and 179 girls.

The findings showed that more than 90 per cent of urine samples of both mothers and children showed detectable concentrations of phthalates, parabens and phenols.

However, there was an exception of triclosan which was present in approximately 70 per cent of the samples.

Every time the concentrations of diethyl phthalate and triclosan in the mother’s urine doubled, pubertal development in girls advanced approximately by one month.

In addition, girls who had higher concentrations of parabens in their urine at age nine also experienced puberty at younger ages.

However, it is unclear if the chemicals were causing the shift, or if girls who reached puberty earlier were more likely to start using personal care products at younger ages, the researchers noted, adding the need for more studies.
